Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve should be running a victory lap after his sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Two” earned over $700 million at the box office this year and after recently receiving the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on May 31, but the current lack of audiences showing up to movie theaters this summer is bringing him down.
Speaking to the press after receiving the award, Villeneuve said, “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theater, and I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2.’ Of course I’m talking about many movies. Two foreign-made animation movies opened on top of the mainland China box office over the latest weekend. Japanese film, “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Earth Symphony” landed in first place, ahead of “The Garfield Movie,” though the match-up was not like-for-like.
According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, “Doraemon” earned $12.6 million (RMB89.5 million) over the three days from its Friday release. “Garfield” was released on Saturday and earned $8.2 million or RMB58.3 million.
“Earth Symphony” is the 43rd film in the franchise and was released in Japan in March. Comscore says that it now has a global box office total of $40.5 million.
Both of the animated newcomers were comfortably ahead of “The Last Frenzy,” the comedy action film that had been on top in China for the previous two weeks. In third place, it earned $4.5 million over the latest weekend. That lifted its cumulative total to $106 million since releasing on May 1.

Total weekend revenues in Korean cinemas were a modest $8.91 million. That figure keeps a post-covid recovery on course, but progress is slow and incomplete.

In my box office predictions, I anticipated the film being beaten by The Garfield Movie in its second weekend, but I didn’t think John Krasinski’s If, in week 3, would manage to overtake it at the box office. But, according to early box office numbers released by Comscore, that’s exactly what happened. According to their stats, The Garfield Movie made $14 million this weekend, compared to If, which made $10.8 million, edging out Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga by a very thin margin, with Miller’s film earning $10.75. Granted, that’s a very close race, so it’s possible that when the final figures come out later today, Miller’s movie might eke out a second-place finish. As expected, The Garfield Movie seems to be squeezing out a victory opposite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the weekend box office. Both films are in their second week of release, and Deadline has Garfield making about $13 million this weekend compared to $11.5 for Furiosa. To note, this margin is pretty slim, so the numbers could easily swing the other way by the time the final figures come in tomorrow afternoon. The Garfield Movie is looking at a roughly 45% week 2 drop, while Furiosa is in the 57% range.

The Shameless star recently appeared on the Films to Be Buried With With Brett Goldstein podcast, where he proceeded to go on a “rant” after the host asked him about the worst movie he’s ever seen.
“Oh, boy. I rarely get through them,” Macy said. “I think at the end of the day, one thing any story has to be is true. It’s got to be true to the human experience. And I think the test is if you put it out there and a couple of million people see it, that most of them recognize the issue and it moves them.”

Last weekend saw one of the closest box office battles of the summer, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only narrowly inching out a victory over The Garfield Movie (by less than a million bucks). With very little in the way of competition this weekend, the orange, animated feline is set to overtake Miller’s post-apocalyptic actioner, thanks mainly to weekend family matinees.
Given how mediocre Furiosa’s box office start was (with many predicting it killed the chance of us ever getting Mad Max: The Wasteland), all eyes will be on the film’s hold this weekend. Given the reviews and word of mouth, I predict a 40% decline, which would put it in the $16-17 million range. Through Tuesday, Apes is at $178.1M international and $306.8M global; this past weekend was its third frame. The Wes Ball-directed pic crossed the $300M milestone with Monday’s numbers.
The Top 5 markets through yesterday are China ($25.8M), France ($18.1M), Mexico ($15.9M), UK ($14.5M) and Brazil ($7.8M).

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy seems to have had a rough run at the box office. Based on the TV show of the same name, the film followed Gosling as a stuntman who gets involved in a conspiracy involving the lead actor of a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. The action comedy was directed by David Leitch, who last helmed Bullet Train.
Gosling’s film reportedly only earned a meager $145 million against a $127 million budget, making it a box office bomb. So you might have heard: despite being a fantastic spectacle and exactly what you want out of a summer post-apocalyptic race into the Wasteland, Furiosa had a rough opening weekend. Like worst opening weekend for a Memorial Day chart-topper since 1984 “rough.” And a mere four days after this stumble began, the debate’s already arisen on whether this was a one-off disappointment due to being a recast prequel movie, or if it’s a sign of larger systemic issues in the industry.

It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. “What do you people out there want?!” a Warner Bros. executive might be forgiven for asking after arguably the worst Memorial Day weekend box office in 40 years. Despite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opening to glowing reviews, glitzy standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival, and as part of a revered IP franchise whose last installment is considered one the best summer movies ever—Mad Max: Fury Road is a six-time Oscar winner!—the prequel’s box office still marked the lowest debut for a number one Memorial Day release since Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. And that came out in 1984.

“Furiosa” opened with $3.35 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 39.5% share of the weekend’s total cinema-going market.

Like most, I was absolutely blown away by Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga this weekend. Chris Bumbray perfectly sums up why the film is a great entry into the Mad Max franchise Here. It may have been the trailer playing before the most number of movies in 2024. It was everywhere.
