Frank Herbert's "Dune" series is as dense with detail as some of the most beloved science fiction and fantasy universes ever created. The cultural nuances of the various houses — from the regal rationality of the Atreides clan to the unapologetic savagery of the Harkonnens — have been fully thought through, and expanded upon throughout the numerous books. Like J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth saga or everything that's grown out of Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek," you don't have to immerse yourself in the minutiae to enjoy these works — at least, not until they dive into the narrative reeds and turn into glorified fan service.
Herbert got there somewhere between "God Emperor of Dune" and "Heretics of Dune," so I'm curious to see how faithful Denis Villeneuve and his successors are willing to be to the author's increasingly involved text. The "Dune...

This past Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start to summer – was a dismal one at the box office, with reports putting it as the worst turnout in decades. Topping the chart was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with around $32 million, just barely edging out Garfield. So what can be expected from the summer box office if this is how it’s going to kick off?
The month of May is when things tend to start picking up at the box office, with tentpole releases and franchise sequels flooding the screens in seemingly rapid succession. But The Fall Guy – which came out on May 3rd – didn’t land the way the studio wanted it and so now it’s available on streaming services, officially yanking its chances to grow at the box office. As it stands, Dune: Part Two – which arrived in March – is the highest-grossing movie of the year, which,...

Following his groundbreaking adaptation of Dune, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is poised to set even higher standards with his upcoming take on Arthur C. Clarke’s revered novel, Rendezvous With Rama. Initially announced in 2021, the filmmaker has shared that its development is underway, as he navigates other projects, including Cleopatra and the Dune threequel, all of which are concurrently in the writing stages.

Veteran director David Fincer worked alongside iconic actor Morgan Freeman when they created and shot the 1995 film Se7en. Portraying the role of Detective Somerset in the crime/mystery film, Freeman loved Fincher’s work and the two decided to work together again.

However, Fincher never got to make his dream film with Morgan Freeman due to the latter’s failing health in the year 2008. With passing time and no hopes left, Fincher’s dream film was later picked up by Dune director Denis Villeneuve and he describes it as “Arrival on steroids”!

Rendezvous With Rama is a 1973 sci-fi novel by writer Arthur C. Clarke (who also wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey). Naturally, veteran director David Fincher wanted to adapt the 1972 novel into a film starring Morgan Freeman in one of the lead roles.

The '90s were a great time to be a young horror-loving kid. There were several gateway horror shows and movies that made genre fans out of an entire generation, preparing kids for the horrors of the real world within the safe confines of a television set. It was a time of "Goosebumps" and of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," a time of "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" and "Tales from the Cryptkeeper." Then there was "Courage the Cowardly Dog."
Though "Real Monsters" featured, well, monsters, it was still definitely a comedic show. "Courage the Cowardly Dog," though, even when it wasn't technically scary, it was always eerie and disturbing. The cartoon follows the eponymous dog Courage, who lives with an elderly couple in a farm in the middle of Nowhere, Kansas. They are constantly thrown into weird, often spooky situations. The series started with a pilot short titled "The Chicken from Outer Space,...

"Dune: Part Two" may have been a bit of a bleak blockbuster, but compared to its predecessor, 2021's "Dune," it's positively refulgent. While the first movie spent a lot of time on exposition and establishing the rules of Denis Villeneuve's interpretation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, "Part Two" signals that it's a much more action-packed and visually diverse affair right from the off.
As the film opens, we join a team of Harkonnen hunters on the barren plains of the planet Arrakis. The group are hunting Fremen, the native inhabitants of the desert planet who have recently been joined by Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica. After we witness the villainous cohort evade a potential sandworm attack by way of their anti-gravity packs — a peak sci-fi moment for cinematographer Greig Fraser — they suddenly come...

After being released earlier this year, Dune: Part Two is still the biggest hit film of the year as of the time of writing, topping the global box office. Fans and critics are very satisfied, and the film promises to be one of the biggest contenders in the upcoming awards season, as Denis Villeneuve produced yet another hit film. The film has so far earned $711,844,358 at the global box office, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, both of which passed the $500 million mark. But, while Dune: Part Two can still be seen in some theaters, it is a movie that premiered almost four months ago (in February). Many new movies have been released in the meantime, but none of them managed to surpass Dune.

Back in 2018, "Dune" director Denis Villeneuve threw "Star Wars" fans into a tizzy (it doesn't take much these days) when he described his then-upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel as being like "'Star Wars' for adults." Of course, that's not really an insult to the franchise or its fans, because "Star Wars" creator George Lucas made no secret of the fact that "Star Wars" is intended for kids.
In fact, during a surprise appearance at Star Wars Celebration in 2017, he reiterated that the very first "Star Wars" installment, which would go on to be titled "A New Hope," was a "a film for 12-year-olds." Of course, that doesn't mean adults can't still find value in these sci-fi stories of heroism. But it also means that the franchise, from its inception, has always been molded to be appealing to children.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that...

Mastermind filmmaker Denis Villeneuve surpassed absolutely all expectations that fans had of him by helming the Dune film series. It was made so immaculately that it turned into a mammoth-like distinctly successful franchise.
And yet, such tremendous success — especially at the global box offices — of the second installment of his book-based film series, seems to have rubbed the director the wrong way.

This comes after Villeneuve himself expressed his disappointment and one major regret about his Timothée Chalamet-starrer sequel to the 2021 masterpiece. Although, the movie has already conquered the box office with a remarkable victory that is yet to be surpassed by other projects this year.
But as unbelievable as it all may seem, the reason behind his regret and disappointment is actually only valid.

Rebecca Ferguson is quickly becoming a titan of the entertainment industry and she’s embracing it. She’s starred in blockbuster franchises like “Mission Impossible” and “Dune,” runaway hits like the musical “The Greatest Showman,” and is now — along with her lead role on the show — taking on the position of executive producer on the Apple TV+ smash “Silo.” In a recent interview on the “Unwrapped” podcast, Ferguson shared how her declining the role of Juliette Nichols led to her being brought on to the larger production team.
“They’re asking for a big dedication here,” Ferguson said of being offered the part. “It’s asking for me to do four seasons of a show. I need to be yearning for this. And there were a couple of things that I wasn’t really loving. So I turned it down and then they came back and they were like, what...

Timothée Chalamet worked together with Woody Allen in the 2019 film, A Rainy Day In New York. However, the Dune actor later regretted the decision to work together with the director after allegations of s*xual abuse once again surfaced against Allen. The story of Dave Bautista's Hollywood career is the story of him trying to prove he's not your average wrestler-turned-actor. To be fair, Bautista's best movies really do suggest he has the talent to take his acting career beyond the tough-man roles so many former grapplers come to embody. He proved that he has potential with his role as Sapper Morton in "Blade Runner 2049," and then followed through on that promising turn with his performance as Leonard in 2023's "Knock at the Cabin." But despite charting a diverse filmography and being recognized as the best wrestler-turned-actor by his "Glass Onion" director Rian Johnson, it's always seemed like Bautista has wanted more.
Though he claims to have proven himself with "Knock at the Cabin," that doesn't mean he's done demonstrating his talents. This year, we've seen him finally given more to do in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology...

With a new month comes many new choices for Netflix viewers, and three of the choices stand out. June looks excellent on Netflix.
There is something for everyone and every situation, including Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie for kids, The Divergent Movie for sci-fi fans, and the Conjuring trilogy for horror fans.
Another good option is the Godzilla Minus One movie, which, as Monsters and Critics reported, just dropped on Netflix.
All those are good options, but three top picks should not be missed: one for drama fans, a throwback for sci-fi fans, and one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.
The first is a Spanish offering named Raising Voices. It is an all-too-familiar tale of sexual assault that immediately grips viewers. Raising Voices, Episode 1, is streaming on Netflix today and should not be missed.

Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Move over, “Dune,” there’s a new bang-able popcorn bucket in town.
Ryan Reynolds has revealed the new popcorn bucket created for “Deadpool and Wolverine” on social media Thursday — and the video is just as inappropriate as you’d expect from the R-rated superhero.

Reynolds unveiled the bucket with a short video set to the epic song “Also Sprach Zarathustra” from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Not too long ago, /Film provided a very serious review of the new "Despicable Me 4" popcorn bucket, turning one of Gru's loyal Minions into a receptacle for everyone's favorite buttery snack at the multiplex. It was a far cry from the surprisingly sexual "Dune: Part Two" popcorn bucket that featured the mouth of a sandworm emerging from the desert, complete with an opening that looked like it probably provided immense amounts of pleasure outside of movie theater snacking. But that's nothing compared to the "Deadpool & Wolverine" popcorn bucket.

Bill Skarsgård is following the legacy of his father and legendary Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård who appeared in MCU and the Dune franchise. Following his Hollywood debut in 2016 with Robert Schwentke’s sci-fi thriller Allegiant in The Divergent Series, Skarsgård made his breakthrough with Andrés Muschietti’s two-part horror thriller It.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two made numerous headlines by becoming the highest-grossing film of the year, thus far. While the performances were brilliant, the film’s technical department also attracted immense praise. One of the standout aspects of the film is its breathtaking makeup.
Renowned makeup artist Donald Mowat worked in the makeup department in both parts of Dune. Mowat also secured an Oscar nomination for his work in the 2021 film. Interestingly, the Dune films could have never achieved such make-up work, had the makeup artist not left another major project.

Donald Mowat had to make a tough decision when he was burdened to choose between Dune and No Time to Die. Both were highly anticipated films and the Canadian makeup fame knew that he would surely disappoint a friend as both parties were his regular collaborators.
Why did Donald Mowat choose the Denis Villeneuve film?...

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movie series is expanding with another installment after the grand success of the third movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was the ultimate treat for Marvel fans. Now, the upcoming Spider-Man movie, as speculation dictates, is going to be more grounded with a bit of multiversal touch.
Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures’ Spider-man: No Way Home.
If not multiversal, Spider-Man might go to its classic root, to its classic villains— Norman and Harry Osborn. New speculation recently suggested that fans could see Dune star Timothée Chalamet making his Spider-Man debut playing a villainous Harry Osborn and in this case, Kevin Feige might hire one MCU star again, this time for the role of Norman Osborn.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite films. Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by 2 successful sequels in the 80s.

Even those who aren’t into cinema can guess that Dune: Part Two is so far the most talked about movie of 2024 and, moreover, the highest-grossing one of the year. Denis Villeneuve’s epic saga attracted the attention of millions of viewers worldwide, with some of them also becoming interested in its book source, Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novels.
However, it’s not so obvious that Villeneuve wasn’t the first who managed to adapt these seemingly unadaptable books. Apart from the unsuccessful 1970’s attempts of the filmmakers Ridley Scott and Alejandro Jodorowsky, there was one that became true.
Back in 1984, the world saw a highly anticipated movie version of Dune, adapted from Herbert’s first novel (1965). Set in the future, it followed the rivalry between two noble clans striving to take control of Arrakis, a planet rich in the valuable drug named Spice.

David Lynch hasn’t directed a feature film since Inland Empire in 2006, but he has directed many shorts since then, as well as all 18 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return. Last month, we heard that he’s hoping to make an animated film called Snootworld, which was rejected by the Netflix streaming service… but while we wait to find out whether or not Snootworld is going to find a home, Lynch has taken to social media to tease that something is coming from him in June. On June 5th, to be exact.
In a video posted to X, Lynch said, “Ladies and gentlemen, something is coming along for you to see and hear. And it will be coming along on June 5.“

One of the central villains in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" is the amoral hedonist Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, ruler of House Harkonnen and overseer of spice production on the planet Arrakis. In the novel, he is described as being so immensely fat that he required a suit of anti-gravity devices -- called suspensors -- to hoist his massive girth. The Baron is cruel, power-mad, and regularly has sex slaves sent to his quarters so that he may engage in sick acts of murderous coitus. Some have criticized the Baron as an example of fatphobia and, rather unfortunately, "queer villainy" in popular media.
In David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of "Dune," the Baron was played by Kenneth McMillan, and Lynch made him all the more revolting by encrusting his face with oily carbuncles that produced shot glasses of black pus. McMillan was outfitted with a fat suit, although he was decidedly...

Director Denis Villeneuve hit it big this year with the release of his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series, the film followed the story of feudal noble families in the future. Villeneuve’s handling of the adaptation, which was largely considered to be unadaptable, was lauded by critics and fans alike.
While Villeneuve seems to have cracked the sci-fi genre, he reportedly was full of praise for his contemporary Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The Dune director mentioned that he was in awe of the film while watching it and that he had watched it several times. Tenet remains one of Nolan’s more divisive works and earned only $359 million at the box office.

When it was announced that despite playing the Caped Crusader in Joel Schumacher’s 1996 epic Batman Forever, Val Kilmer won’t return for the sequel Batman & Robin, it was a sure sign that something had gone amiss for the actor. Kilmer had solidified his reputation for being difficult to work with, ever since his rise to fame in the comedy Top Secret! (1984).

Mentats are among the most confusing elements of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation. Though they are never properly explained in the movie, mentats are essential to the world of the film, and to the world of Frank Herbert's novels. They are basically human computers, capable of complex calculations — which makes them great political advisers due to their ability to forecast how any action will affect their lords. The smartest of all mentats is Thufir Hawat, who (in the novel) discovers the secret to Shaddam Corrino IV's Sardaukar, and is a major element in Duke Leto's plan to defeat his elite troops.
As played by Stephen McKinley Henderson in Villeneuve's first "Dune" film, Thufir Hawat also has the honor of being in one of the two funniest scenes in the movie when he suddenly shows up with a little parasol. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Henderson said the parasol...

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. But that didn't mean the look of "Dune" and "Part Two" came exclusively from the book. Production designer Patrice Vermette consulted a wide array of sources, leading to sets...

The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. This year, acclaimed British filmmaker Christopher Nolan has finally received his first Oscar for his work on Oppenheimer and everyone agreed that it was deserved, but also that it should not have been his first Oscar, seeing how many masterful movies Nolan had made before Oppenheimer. In that aspect, the filmmaker officially became a part of history and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of his colleagues speak very highly of him and his achievements over the years.
Although modern cinema is much more diverse than it was decades ago, and there are several equally innovative and important approaches to filmmaking, we cannot deny that Nolan definitely changed cinema. Val Kilmer was almost a lead in one of the cult classics of David Lynch. The Top Gun actor could be a massive name early in his career if he accepted Lynch’s 1986 mystery-thriller Blue Velvet.
Val Kilmer has been cast in several commercially and critically successful films throughout his career. However, the Iceman fame has also lost some iconic roles that could have elevated his career.

The colossal spice-producing worms on the planet of Arrakis were hauntingly beautiful and provided an exceptional theater experience.
One might think that the sandworm must be the toughest part of the franchise based on Frank Herbert’s works. However, the mastermind behind both the Dune films, Villeneuve has claimed that the Desert Mouse was no cakewalk as well.

And filmmaker Denis Villeneuve also experienced this while working on the sequel of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film, Blade Runner. Released in 1982, the original movie received mixed reviews upon its release. However, it would later go on to become a cult hit.

Decades after the original film’s release, the sequel of the film finally went into production with Villeneuve taking the directorial duties and Scott serving as an executive producer. However, his constant presence on the set was not a very pleasing experience for the Dune director, who politely asked Scott to leave without directly saying it.
