Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve should be running a victory lap after his sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Two” earned over $700 million at the box office this year and after recently receiving the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on May 31, but the current lack of audiences showing up to movie theaters this summer is bringing him down.
Speaking to the press after receiving the award, Villeneuve said, “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theater, and I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2.’ Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like ‘Civil War,’ for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theater. I was lucky that ‘Part Two’ did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly.”

Disney seems to be in the mood to bring back their audiences to the cinema. Their next animated film from Pixar Inside Out 2 is reportedly all set to have an exclusive 100-day theatrical window before it debuts on streaming. The president of Pixar recently mentioned that the company wants to re-train audiences from expecting the films at home sooner.
This would be the highest theatrical window for Pixar in the recent past as their post-pandemic releases Lightyear and Elemental had shorter windows. The animation studio released three of their most anticipated films on Disney Plus during the pandemic, which they reportedly hope to move away from.

A new film sits atop the box-office weekend as The Garfield Movie managed to claim the number one slot by the margin of $3.2 million.
After finishing in second place last weekend, The Garfield Movie took over the box-office weekend top ten with $14.0 million in its second weekend of release. This gives the Sony Pictures Releasing offering a two-week tally of $51.6 million, allowing it to finish just $3.2 million ahead of second-place If. The Paramount Pictures product brought in $10.8 million during its third weekend in release, raising its overall total to $80.4 million. Meanwhile, the Warner Bros. film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga dropped two spots, after finishing in first place last weekend, to land in third place with $10.7, just $0.1 million behind If. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes however, held steady in fourth place where it added $8.8 million to raise its four-week total to $140.1 million for 20th Century Studios. Also remaining...

When the Russo brothers were asked about the sub-par run of recent entrants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they had a categorical response – it was fatigue. For the past few years, the word superhero fatigue has been the buzz word. But the Russo brothers believe it to be something more, a fatigue with movies across the board. With the advent and multiplication of content, they believe that movies are beginning to lose their charm. But The Garfield Movie might have shown them the mirror.

This past Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start to summer – was a dismal one at the box office, with reports putting it as the worst turnout in decades. Topping the chart was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with around $32 million, just barely edging out Garfield. So what can be expected from the summer box office if this is how it’s going to kick off?
The month of May is when things tend to start picking up at the box office, with tentpole releases and franchise sequels flooding the screens in seemingly rapid succession. But The Fall Guy – which came out on May 3rd – didn’t land the way the studio wanted it and so now it’s available on streaming services, officially yanking its chances to grow at the box office. As it stands, Dune: Part Two – which arrived in March – is the highest-grossing movie of the year, which,...

Update: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie, which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international and global charts this frame.
The offshore session in 60 markets was $27.1M, lifting worldwide to $152.2M. The voracious kitty had paws aplenty with overseas markets down just 3% from last weekend. The international box office cume is now $100.7M.
In China, Alcon partnered with Stars Collective to distribute the film via China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures and opened to $8.2M, starting from Saturday. In two days, Garfield has surpassed the lifetimes of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is we have touched bottom for the summer and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at...

After the earth-shattering success of Barbie, fans expected Ryan Gosling to deliver a summer blockbuster with The Fall Guy. Sadly, Gosling’s Kenergy seemed to fail in driving the audience to the theaters as it turned out to be a massive box office flop.
It must be noted that despite the poor box office results, the David Leitch brainchild did critically very well. Several critics claimed that the film was entertaining and was a solid one-time watch. However, some fans don’t share similar sentiments on Reddit after completing The Fall Guy.

The box office outlook for George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks pretty bleak. In my box office predictions, I anticipated the film being beaten by The Garfield Movie in its second weekend, but I didn’t think John Krasinski’s If, in week 3, would manage to overtake it at the box office. But, according to early box office numbers released by Comscore, that’s exactly what happened. According to their stats, The Garfield Movie made $14 million this weekend, compared to If, which made $10.8 million, edging out Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga by a very thin margin, with Miller’s film earning $10.75. Granted, that’s a very close race, so it’s possible that when the final figures come out later today, Miller’s movie might eke out a second-place finish. Yet, with a 59% decline in its second weekend, hopes that the movie might turn into a word-of-mouth sleeper,...

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.
Furiosa, costing a pricey $168 million to produce, fell a steep 59 percent to $10.75 million, dashing hopes that it could rebound after a disappointing Memorial Day opening. The dystopian epic is also stalling overseas, where it took in only...

“The Garfield Movie” clawed its way to first place, overtaking last weekend’s champion “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” at the domestic box office.
This weekend (unlike last) wasn’t a nail-biter as “Garfield” effortlessly pulled ahead with $14 million from 4,108 theaters in its second weekend of release, while “Furiosa” trailed in third place with $10.7 million from 3,864 venues in its sophomore outing. Now, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” has grossed $51.5 million in North America and $152 million globally to date. It’s a solid showing for the $60 million-budgeted film. “Furiosa,” the fifth entry in Warner Bros. and director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, has generated $49.6 million domestically and $114 million worldwide. With a $168 million price tag, the R-rated tentpole has a much steeper path to profitability.
Though “Garfield” gets first-place bragging rights, it’s another terrible weekend at the box office with ticket sales a staggering 65% behind the same three-day period in 2023. As a result,...

After being released earlier this year, Dune: Part Two is still the biggest hit film of the year as of the time of writing, topping the global box office. Fans and critics are very satisfied, and the film promises to be one of the biggest contenders in the upcoming awards season, as Denis Villeneuve produced yet another hit film. The film has so far earned $711,844,358 at the global box office, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, both of which passed the $500 million mark. But, while Dune: Part Two can still be seen in some theaters, it is a movie that premiered almost four months ago (in February). Many new movies have been released in the meantime, but none of them managed to surpass Dune.

"The Fall Guy" might have kicked off the summer box office season in disappointing fashion, but there's no doubt Ryan Gosling's latest outing is a spectacular time at the movies. Regardless of the film's commercial performance, Gosling and his co-star, Emily Blunt, delivered on the chemistry and charisma, making for a positive critical response that the pair, and director David Leitch, can be proud of.
But then, Gosling never really fails to bring the charisma. On his journey from child actor to movie star, his wry charm has never wavered. Now, his role as Ken in 2023's mega-hit "Barbie" has seemingly endeared him to a whole new generation, culminating in his standout performance of "I'm Just Ken" at the 2024 Oscars. But it's arguably when balancing his playful, roguish side with his more serious dramatic sensibilities that Gosling is at his best.

Brad Pitt is undoubtedly one of the biggest, if not the biggest star in Hollywood. The now 60-year-old heartthrob has been involved in a plethora of iconic projects across genres and is estimated to have a net worth of $400 million. Right from 12 Monkeys to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, to 12 Years a Slave, Pitt’s career is simply littered with iconic projects.

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. There were question marks over the release date in the aftermath of the SAG-AFTRA strikes. But things seem to be going uphill now, as the film has completed a major milestone.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about one of the great ones: Martin Scorsese. Who’s better than Marty? Myself, Conor O’Donnell, and guest Jake Kring-Schreifels. Our B-Sides today include Italianamerican, Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead, and Silence.
We talk about a lot in this one. How to pronounce Scorsese! How to pronounce Coppola! Catholicism! Buddhism! Making films about religions in your life! This is an episode with lofty ambitions, not unlike most Scorsese pictures!
In examining Italianamerican we muse on Marty as documentarian, including the mention of an incredibly-underrated Scorsese documentary that’s hard to find: Public Speaking starring Fran Lebowitz. We reflect on the guardedness of memory by older generations. We also recount the Muddy Waters – László Kovács...

Last weekend saw one of the closest box office battles of the summer, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only narrowly inching out a victory over The Garfield Movie (by less than a million bucks). With very little in the way of competition this weekend, the orange, animated feline is set to overtake Miller’s post-apocalyptic actioner, thanks mainly to weekend family matinees.
Given how mediocre Furiosa’s box office start was (with many predicting it killed the chance of us ever getting Mad Max: The Wasteland), all eyes will be on the film’s hold this weekend. Given the reviews and word of mouth, I predict a 40% decline, which would put it in the $16-17 million range. To note, during its run, Mad Max: Fury Road never posted a drop over 50% until late in its run. Hopefully, word of mouth means the film will have a decent enough finish at the box office,...

Theatrical exclusivity is holding steady: In the first four months of 2024, it was around 30 days before PVOD — same as last year. However, as we track the theatrical, PVOD, and streaming lifecycles we’re seeing a new trend: The gap between theaters and streamers is shrinking.
Already, we’re seeing first-quarter theatrical releases like Sony’s “Anyone But You” on Netflix or “Dune 2” on Max. For the first two months of 2024, the average gap between the theatrical opening day and the streamers’ debuts was just 68 days. For the same period in 2023, it was 90 days.
Every wide release from the first four months of 2024 is now available for home viewing (or will be soon). The 30-day average between theatrical and PVOD debuts now appears to be a norm, and any stability is welcome in an uncertain industry. However, the accelerating move to streaming is bad news for theaters.
Faster streaming means another theatrical disincentive.

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

A long-awaited video game adaptation now has new life. Universal Pictures has officially boarded the "Just Cause" movie, and the studio has some impressive talent behind the camera to make the project a reality. That starts with director Ángel Manuel Soto, best known for directing the DC superhero movie "Blue Beetle." The project has also added "The Fall Guy" director David Leitch and his producing partner (and wife) Kelly McCormick on board as producers with their company, 87North.
Universal has a longstanding relationship with Leitch, as the filmmaker made "Hobbs & Shaw" for the studio before stepping behind the camera for "The Fall Guy." He also very nearly directed the new "Jurassic World" film before Gareth Edwards took over. 87North has a first-look deal with the studio, so this partnership makes sense. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson are also on board as producers. As for Soto,...

The Oceans duo are back on the big screen in the first Wolfs trailer – a buddy crime caper from Jon Watts.
2001 called, and they want their leading men back.
That’s right, it’s the Ocean’s Eleven reunion we’ve been waiting for. Brad Pitt and George Clooney are starring as rival ‘fixers’ in Jon Watts’ first feature post-Spider-Man: No Way Home, with a title apparently stolen from Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction.
My head hurts. Here’s the Wolfs trailer.
True to the name’s Tarantino roots, Pitt and Clooney co-star as a pair of, er, specialist cleaner-folk, both hired to dispose of the same body at the same time. Cue hijinks, a few drugs and a gunfight or two – you know the drill.
The trailer drops at an auspicious time for the big-screen action-comedy genre. The Fall Guy – a more-or-less original crowd-pleaser originally seen as...

Last year, Jennifer Lopez starred in so-so Netflix actioner "The Mother," in which she sniped her way through wave after wave of bad guys. Unfortunately the film marked yet another moment whereby the streaming age subsumed a former megastar into its nebulous cloud of generic "content." If "The Mother" isn't enough to convince you of such developments, just take a look at "Atlas," the latest Lopez-starring Netflix original film.
It should be said that the trailer for "Atlas" did look promising, but critics certainly aren't too impressed with this sci-fi actioner, which comes from director Brad Peyton ("San Andreas") and also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong. Lopez plays an AI-wary data analyst who quickly finds herself in a situation where she's forced to rely on a synthetic consciousness to survive a mission gone awry. In a reverse-"Blade Runner" scenario, Lopez's character, Atlas Shepherd, travels to...

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy seems to have had a rough run at the box office. Based on the TV show of the same name, the film followed Gosling as a stuntman who gets involved in a conspiracy involving the lead actor of a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. The action comedy was directed by David Leitch, who last helmed Bullet Train.
Gosling’s film reportedly only earned a meager $145 million against a $127 million budget, making it a box office bomb. While the film received positive responses from fans and critics, author Stephen King seemed to have had a mixed reaction to the film. He reportedly disagreed with a review of the film that called it ‘great fun’.

So you might have heard: despite being a fantastic spectacle and exactly what you want out of a summer post-apocalyptic race into the Wasteland, Furiosa had a rough opening weekend. Like worst opening weekend for a Memorial Day chart-topper since 1984 “rough.” And a mere four days after this stumble began, the debate’s already arisen on whether this was a one-off disappointment due to being a recast prequel movie, or if it’s a sign of larger systemic issues in the industry.
Either way, it’s part of a May which has sent a chill down studios’ spines. Generally considered the launchpad for the summer movie season, May is the month that for 20 years has usually begun with superhero movies and big returns. Instead the biggest success so far has been Disney/20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which as of press time is on the verge of crossing $300 million globally.

Big-budgeted films with a stellar cast are normally expected to perform better at the box office than low-budgeted films. However, the 2024 box office so far has seen more major flops, big-budget films failing to make it to the breakeven point, and low-budgeted movies garnering millions across the world. And so it was for actors like Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling, who despite their fanfare and talent, failed to woo the audiences with their feats.

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

After beaching off Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and highlighting the hard work of stunt performers in David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, Sony is capitalizing on the “Gosling-ssance” with the release of his 2011 thriller Drive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The brutal film from Nicolas Winding Refn drips with style, presents Gosling in one of his most iconic roles, and is due for a comeback in crisp, clean, high definition.
Here’s Sony‘s official synopsis for Drive:
Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. The overall earnings for the weekend are not that good, but that is a different issue we are going to discuss later in the article. What is important is that we can confirm that Furiosa won at the domestic box office and that its total gross, including the worldwide revenues, is at $64,800,000, according to the numbers published on Box Office Mojo.
If you remember, some earlier reports claimed that The Garfield Movie would surpass Furiosa, but that ultimately did not happen. And while the difference between the two movies is quite small, George Miller...

Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt feel the need for speed.
The two A-listers and their respective companies have teamed up with a coterie of production banners to produce both a docuseries and a feature film centered on the famous and dangerous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy motorcycle races.
Tatum’s Free Association, Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, screenwriter Jason Keller, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady and Box to Box Films are behind the ventures, which are looking to capture the growing global interest in a wide swath of the sports world worldwide. It also comes as more streamers, media companies and nations pour money into sports at the highest corporate levels.
The production banners will take these projects out as a package later this year, according to Tuesday’s announcement by the companies. Mediawan, the European media company and majority stakeholder of Plan B, will be the studio of the docuseries and handle international sales.

The production banners will take these projects out as a package later this year, according to Tuesday’s announcement by the companies. Mediawan, the European media company and majority stakeholder of Plan B, will be the studio of the docuseries and handle international sales.

Hollywood constantly brings a new generation of stars to the horror genre in an effort to draw in younger viewers and provide an abundance of thrills. One example of this is Tarot, the latest horror film from Sony Pictures that stars a number of well-known up-and-coming actors. The cast features Jacob Batalon from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avantika Vandanapu, the breakout cast member from Mean Girls.
Well, Tarot has caused quite a stir in the horror community as it heads to digital platforms much sooner than expected. Despite earning over 4 times its budget of $8 million, many horror fans are feeling slighted by the decision to release the film online so quickly.

The Fall Guy will be available to buy and rent from next week and the release will also include an extended cut.
Last week, we reported that David Leitch’s The Fall Guy was heading to streaming in the US only 17 days after it was released in cinemas. The film had a rough time financially and was considered a box-office disappointment for Universal Pictures.
The UK is now following behind with The Fall Guy available to buy and rent digitally from 3rd June. However, you also have the option to buy the film’s extended cut which includes “an additional 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage featuring more action, more laughs and more stunts,” according to the press release.
Based on an 80s TV show of the same name, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers who goes on an action-packed adventure after the star of his ex-girlfriend Jody’s directorial debut goes missing.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.
“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.
