Disney seems to be in the mood to bring back their audiences to the cinema. Their next animated film from Pixar Inside Out 2 is reportedly all set to have an exclusive 100-day theatrical window before it debuts on streaming. The president of Pixar recently mentioned that the company wants to re-train audiences from expecting the films at home sooner.
This would be the highest theatrical window for Pixar in the recent past as their post-pandemic releases Lightyear and Elemental had shorter windows. The animation studio released three of their most anticipated films on Disney Plus during the pandemic, which they reportedly hope to move away from.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is we have touched bottom for the summer and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at...

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

Pixar’s focus is now on two words: “IP” and “Franchise.” The company that was once known for new and creative ideas is now finding ways to make more IP sequels or come up with “franchise seeds,” according to Pixar’s president, Jim Morris.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Morris discussed Pixar’s new focus of making three new films every two years instead of one film a year. Those three films will have two sequels or spinoffs and only one new concept that will be used as “potential seeds for new franchises.”
It isn’t about creating ideas that are just good films anymore. It’s about franchising everything for Disney.
Pixar did incredibly well for years, and then when John Lasseter left, it seemed to nosedive.
While some of their newer films aren’t as good as older ones, they still aren’t terrible. “Turning Red,” “Luca,” and...

Disney is going back to its strategy for “Elemental” for the release of “Inside Out 2.” They will leave the film in theaters for 100 days before they release it to streaming. With “Elemental,” the film did not do well at the start; however, by the end of summer, it had broken even and started to profit.
When “Elemental” came out, they did not say that was what they were doing. People waited, assuming it would come to Disney+ in just a few weeks. Instead, it took three months to start streaming. So, people waited to go to the theater and had to wait longer than expected for a streaming release.
This tells me that Disney thinks it will need that long to profit on “Inside Out 2” like they did with “Elemental.” Or this decision is an attempt to retrain audiences to go to the theater. Letting them know they...

Denis Villeneuve is at the top of the world (and the box office) after releasing his iconic Timothée Chalamet film, Dune: Part Two. Getting a theatrical release at the start of March, the film went on to earn $711 million at the global box office, which is the highest earnings in 2024 by any film.

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. Not that stateside will make or break “Haikyu!!,” which released in its native Japan back in February and stands as the second-highest...

If anyone’s created any animated magic in the West, it’s Disney and Pixar. Although connected since 2006 (Pixar started off as an independent studio before being acquired by Disney), the two studios have had different policies for a while, but while they still release films somewhat independently, a balance has been found and it is now more difficult to tell a Disney production from a Pixar one; two decades ago, which is not t along, it was very easy to do. But, regardless of the magic and the historical importance, both studios have been struggling for a while now in the financial sense. Workers have been laid off, projects have been put on hold and their overall number has been reduced, while those that have been released are not doing that well at the box office.

Similar to Marvel Studios, it's been a tough few years for Pixar. The studio's movies were sent straight to Disney+ during the pandemic and a couple of box office flops have tarnished the brand to a point where they're now in the process of rebuilding their reputation.
In a new Bloomberg report (via Toonado.com), more is revealed about how the studio is finally pivoting away from streaming to focus its efforts on theatrical titles. However, we're still getting at least one more TV show: Dream Productions is "set in the Inside Out universe of Riley's dreams" and expected to premiere in 2025.
The hope is that Inside Out 2 will be a hit and it won't be the last sequel we see from Pixar in the coming years. According to the report, "every hit of yesterday is being considered for a reboot, with Finding Nemo and The Incredibles regarded as...

The trailer pulled in more than 170 million views in its first day of availability, but will fans be able to stream it before the end of 2024?
It’s safe to say that the sequel to Disney’s 2016 animated hit “Moana” has been hotly anticipated by audiences. The teaser trailer for “Moana 2” was released on Wednesday, May 29, and according to the studio, it has racked up 178 million views in its first 24 hours of availability, which is a record for an animated Disney film. Viewers who want to stream it at home are in for a bit of a wait, but I’ll use past Disney releases to try and predict when “Moana 2” will be available to watch on-demand.
Key Details: The “Moana 2” trailer beat out old record-holders like “Inside Out 2,” “Frozen 2” and “The Incredibles 2.” As a Disney animated movie, “Moana 2” will stream on Disney+...

May ended up being more than a bit of a letdown at the box office, yet the summer movie season continues on with three more major franchise sequels (or prequels) and a few other attempts at variety. Read on for Gold Derby’s June 2024 box office preview.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

Thanksgiving may be months away, but audiences are already getting ready to feast on Moana 2.
A trailer for the movie was viewed by 178 million people in its first 24 hours this week, more than any other trailer for a film in the history of Disney’s animated empire, which is made up of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. (Moana is from Disney Animation.)
In terms of trailer viewership, the previous record for Pixar was Inside Out 2 (157 million), and the best for Disney Animation was Frozen 2 (116 million). The Moana 2 trailer also came in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113 million).
The Moana 2 trailer will play before Inside Out 2, which opens in theaters June 14. The upcoming Pixar sequel is tracking to open to $80 million-$85 million, although one service believes it will cross $90 million. Both films are good news for Disney’s animation empire, as Pixar, in particular, has been struggling.

It’s looking like Disney will make a big comeback at the Thanksgiving box office: Their Moana 2 trailer which dropped Wednesday has become the studio’s most watched ever for an animated movie, clocking 178M views in 24 hours.
That traffic sails by previous record holders Inside Out 2 (157Mm) and Frozen 2 (116Mm).
The figure also comes in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113Mm).
Views are solely from online across TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. There were very positive reactions for the animation, love of the original film and character fanship. Moana, Maui, and Pua were standout characters with audiences calling out how Moana is one of their favorite Disney characters of all-time. All this is very good considering this was a project originally conceived as a Disney+ series that the studio flipped to the big screen.

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.

The Inside Out 2 new cast members and characters are one of the reasons for the anticipation for the nine-year-long sequel. Its 2015 predecessor, Inside Out, was an all-round success, with two Oscar nominations at the 88th Academy Awards and a win for Best Animated Feature. It also ended the year as its seventh-highest-grossing film, with Box Office earnings of $858.8 million against a production budget of $175 million. Its success led to the inevitable production of a sequel scheduled to premiere on June 14, 2024. Inside Out 2 follows its protagonist, Riley Andersen, as she becomes a teenager. It...

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die has received clearance to roll into China. The Sony Pictures film will hit Chinese cinemas on June 22, according to both the studio and local press reports in Beijing. The film opens theatrically in North America on June 7.
The new film is the fourth installment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys for Life (2020), which revived the movie series after a 17-year hiatus and was a worldwide hit with $426 million in total ticket revenue. Bad Boys for Life earned just $3 million in China, but it was released there amid the challenges of the pandemic.
Bad Boys 4 is helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who infamously had their $90 million Batgirl feature for Max shelved for a tax break by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

Aloha, Moana. (The hello kind.)
Disney released a teaser trailer (below) for “Moana 2” on May 29. Our princess of Motunui is still out there voyaging, still drumming with her dead ancestors, still battling coconuts — it honestly just looks like additional “Moana” footage. That’s not automatically a bad thing. Also, it’s not yet the trailer trailer, so we’ll cut it a break — especially considering the feature film’s own origin story.
“Moana 2” was originally planned as a Disney+ series. Well, upgrade. Now a proper sequel, “Moana 2” welcomes back Auli’i Cravalho (as Moana), Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, and Temuera Morrison as Chief Tai.
Also an “upgrade” is Maui’s “boat snack” — the pig, Pua, has joined Heihei the chicken on Moana’s boat. Johnson gets the big joke of the teaser trailer: “Bacon and eggs!?! Why didn’t you bring the pig last time?...

Like worst opening weekend for a Memorial Day chart-topper since 1984 “rough.” And a mere four days after this stumble began, the debate’s already arisen on whether this was a one-off disappointment due to being a recast prequel movie, or if it’s a sign of larger systemic issues in the industry.
Either way, it’s part of a May which has sent a chill down studios’ spines. Generally considered the launchpad for the summer movie season, May is the month that for 20 years has usually begun with superhero movies and big returns. Instead the biggest success so far has been Disney/20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which as of press time is on the verge of crossing $300 million globally.

McDonald’s Happy Meals and Disney animated films have mostly been staples throughout the decades. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is not breaking that habit, with ten new toys now appearing in the iconic little red boxes.
Another commonality we’re seeing is the gimmick these toys have. Each emotion may differ, but they all stand on the same base. What does the base do? It shoots discs. Yes, it’s a play feature we’ve seen multiple times in Happy Meal toys.
At least it’s not another boring, big-headed Marvel character, right?
The emotion figures included are:
Joy Sadness Anger Disgust Fear Ennui Embarrassment Anxiety Envy Dave and Frank (subconscious cops)
The characters are translucent, which is pretty cool from a display standpoint. They also have a semi-interactive component.
Using a smartphone, you can place the characters on top of the screen, and they light up.

Coming on to direct the sequel of an Oscar-winning animated feature is a daunting prospect, but luckily Kelsey Mann had producer Mark Nielsen to help with Inside Out 2. Having worked as an associate producer on the original Inside Out, Nielsen was thrilled when Pete Docter, who directed the original, suggested he work with Mann on the sequel.
Inside Out 2 returns to follow Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman) and her emotional network during her teenage years. As she hits puberty, a crew of new emotions shows up, upsetting the balance Joy (Amy Poehler) has created in Riley’s mind. Mann did extensive research into how the brain is changed during puberty to create new settings and ideas for the sequel. Inside Out 2 releases in theaters on June 14, 2024.

Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil Box Office Worldwide (Day 12): Heads To 75 Crore Mark; Stays Strong Despite Competition With Turbo & Thalavan(Photo Credit –YouTube)
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest comedy film, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil, has been tickling audiences’ funny bones and ringing up the box office since its release. After a strong first week with collections of 28.65 crore, all eyes are set on whether the film can surpass the lifetime collections of Varshangalkku Shesham.
The film’s performance has been particularly impressive considering the challenges it faced in its second weekend. New releases like Turbo and Thalavan offered moviegoers fresh choices. Despite this competition, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil showed remarkable resilience.
While the second Friday collections saw a flat performance with 1.6 crore, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil bounced back over the weekend, with a jump of 56.25% on Saturday and raked in 2.5 crore. A further 22% on Sunday, with 3.05 crore added to its kitty. This indicates strong word-of-mouth and a film that continues to draw audiences in.

Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

This weekend, the box office looked more like a Wasteland than the fruitful Green Place of Many Mothers.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” underperformed in its box office debut with $25.6 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Instead of ruling the box office as expected, it’s in a shockingly close race for first place with Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie,” which collected $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the four days. Neither could salvage the holiday weekend, which is the worst it’s been in nearly three decades.
It wasn’t just domestic audiences that failed to show up for “Furiosa.” The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its worldwide tally to $58.9 million. Imperator Furiosa has battled ruthless kidnappers, raider attacks and maniacal warlords as she traverses a lawless Wasteland. And yet her fiercest adversary, at least today, seems to be a lazy cat who loves lasagna.
The Warner Bros. high-octane prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is facing off against Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts over Memorial Day weekend. Each movie has generated roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Monday. Both studios are reporting that its own movie has ranked No. 1. Whichever pulls ahead, it’ll be the worst Memorial Day opening weekend in nearly three decades.
For movie theaters, it’s yet another sparkless weekend at the summer box office — with recent would-be blockbusters ranging from just fine (“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” with a $58 million debut) to disappointing (“The Fall Guy” with a $27 million debut; “If...

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is set to return this summer, bringing back the fan-favorite emotions of a growing teenage girl named Riley. While the original film introduced us to the daily workings of emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear in Riley’s head, the sequel takes a deeper dive into an essential aspect of human psyche – the Belief System. Described by director Kelsey Mann as an “ethereal chamber where some key memories drive the principles she believes about herself and the world,” the Belief System is expected to be a driving force in understanding Riley’s complex emotional landscape.
The post Dive Deeper into the Belief System of Rileys Mind in Inside Out 2 first appeared on TVovermind.

For many, summer means getting outside, hittin’ the beach or the pool, and taking in some rays, but on those truly blazing-hot days, there’s nothing quite like the cool embrace of an air-conditioned movie theater with drinks and snacks delivered right to your seat. Alamo Drafthouse knows this. It also knows that taking your family to the theater nowadays isn’t cheap, so the theater chain is bringing back their $5 Alamo Kids Camp tickets. All proceeds will support nonprofits like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“Created to provide maximum fun with maximum value, Alamo Kids Camp combines family favorite films with $5 tickets for everyone — little kids, big kids, and grown-up kids,” a statement from Alamo Drafthouse reads. “From June through August, guests can enjoy recent animated hits like the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies and ‘Minions’, live-action adventures like ‘Matilda’ and ‘Peter Pan,’ and timeless classics like...

George Miller is back with yet another post-apocalyptic dystopian action movie, this one starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor Joy. It is the fifth film in the franchise. The first movie came out in 1979, starring Mel Gibson as Mad Max Rockatansky. When we last left Riley Andersen, the young protagonist of Pixar’s 2015 animated classic, Inside Out, she was 12 years old, and her still-developing mind was finding a way to balance all the core emotions of childhood, including Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Nearly a decade later, Pixar is returning to the vast territory inside Riley’s mind as she turns 13 and enters adolescence with Inside Out 2. This time she’ll grapple with new emotions, changes to her psyche and body, and challenges both in her inner mind and the outside world.

The year was predicted to look pretty bleak with a number of major tentpoles being delayed due to the dual union strikes from the Writers’ Guild and the Actors’ Guild from late last year. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some big releases, as some films were still ready to go for the summer. The past few weeks have seen a steamy character drama with Challengers, an action comedy with two stars from last year’s Barbenheimer sensation with The Fall Guy, the powers of Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski teaming up for a cutesy family film with If and a CGI-filled action epic from an established franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Two of the films from these past weeks have already been made available on digital platforms — Challengers and The Fall Guy.

No one could blame the box office for needing an imaginary friend right now. For the first time in more than a decade — excluding the worst period of the Covid-19 crisis — no movie opening during the first six months of the year has come close to hitting the $100 million mark in its domestic launch.
In 2023, for example, three films had accomplished this feat by the time Memorial Day rolled around, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which debuted to $146.3 million in April on its way to earning $1.36 billion worldwide. To date, the top opening of the year belongs to March tentpole Dune: Part Two, which started off with $82.5 million, followed by $80 million for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In fact, it’s nearing the one-year anniversary of the last film to open to $100 million or more — Barbie, which sunnily smiled its way to a $162 million debut in the latter half of July.

Disney Marvel Studios’ first R-rated release, Deadpool & Wolverine, is already heating up eight weeks before its debut, having already collected some $8M in first day ticket sales. $8M is pretty remarkable for an R-rated movie two months before release. The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starring threequel directed by Shawn Levy opens July 26.
While there are no direct comps on Deadpool & Wolverine ticket sales in post-Covid history, its current cash bests the 24-hour advance ticket sales of Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman ($6.5M), Disney Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($6M) and Lionsgate’s R-rated John Wick: Chapter 4 ($1.4M). We never enjoy writing these kinds of news stories. Pixar is the latest studio to lay off some of its staff as 175 workers were let go today (21st May).
Deadline reported in January that Pixar was looking to cut some of its workforce to reduce costs, but the layoffs still come as an unpleasant surprise, especially to the workers affected. The cuts were rumoured to affect as much as 20 percent of Pixar’s workforce, but the actual number is the equivalent of 14 percent.
Pixar, like many studios, has been struggling since the pandemic. Three Pixar films – Luca, Turning Red and Soul, all excellent – were released directly on Disney+ and audiences have somewhat come to expect quick access to films, especially as cinema ticket prices soar.

Pixar was hit with layoffs on Tuesday as approximately 175 employees, or 14% of its workforce, were let go.
In a note to staff, Pixar president Jim Morris said that individuals who have been impacted by the layoffs will be notified on Tuesday. “Calendar invites to speak with a leader have already gone out to those individuals, and we anticipate we will have connected with everyone impacted by the end of the day,” he wrote.
Pixar employees have been bracing for layoffs since January, but cuts were smaller than the speculated 20% reduction that was reported at the time.
Once considered the gold standard of family films, Pixar has been struggling since the pandemic when its corporate overlords at Disney used the pedigree of the animation brand to prop up its new streaming service. Update: The Pixar Animation Studios cuts we previously told you about months ago are now commencing, according to sources familiar with the moves. The number of those let go is around 175, or 14% of the staff.
The pullback is largely due to Disney+ scaling back on direct-to-consumer series. Bob Iger has signaled the need for a more disciplined approach to streaming since returning as CEO in November 2022.
Since Covid, Pixar has yet to produce a bona-fide all-quadrants hit, though the animation division has also been hampered by distribution moves that sent three consecutive releases straight to streaming. Heading into summer, all eyes are on Inside Out 2, which openis over Fathers Day weekend, June 14 to 16. Director Kelsey Mann’s sequel is among a group of big movies expected to work this summer, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars.

The long-expected layoffs at Pixar Animation Studios have begun.
Today, leadership at the storied company that traces it origins to the late Steve Jobs and was bought by Disney in 2006 will notify employees of the reductions, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. It is the biggest restructuring in Pixar’s history, although top leadership isn’t impacted.
Approximately 14 percent of Pixar’s workforce, or around 175 employees, will be let go. Before the reductions, approximately 1,300 people worked at the animation studio.
The layoffs are part of Disney chief Bob Iger’s overarching mandate to return to a focus on quality, versus churning out content for streaming which was a priority for his sort-lived successor, Bob Chapek. Disney execs have talked about returning to a focus on quality during numerous earnings calls this year, saying creative teams across the company were stretched too thin in the arms race to feed streamers.

Entering what some may call her absurdist era, Emma Stone continues to captivate audiences, fresh off her peculiar yet heartwarming Poor Things performance that earned her a second Oscar. Now, she returns with another head-turning film titled Kinds of Kindness, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Emma Stone in a still from Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness | Distribution: Searchlight Pictures
Labeling the film as anything less than utterly insane would fall short. Co-star Jesse Palmer’s response upon delving into the script echoed that of the audience who witnessed it unfold at Cannes. He confessed that experiencing the wide range of emotions stirred by the movie left him feeling as though his entire body was on fire.

Not exactly the opening weekend that dreams are made of.
Director John Krasinski’s “If,” a fantasy-comedy that promises your imaginary friends from childhood are real, fell slightly short of box office expectations with $35 million. Heading into the weekend, “If” was expected to bring in at least $40 million in its first weekend of release. Based on Friday’s turnout, it looked like “If” would open to $30 million but projections were revised up after Saturday’s strong showing. Ticket sales were enough for first place, but it’s a wobbly start for a PG family film that cost $110 million to make and many millions more to market. It collected an additional $20 million overseas for a global total of $55 million.
The good news for Paramount Pictures, which distributed “If,” is that audiences dug the film, giving it an “A” CinemaScore. Ideally, it’ll have staying power like recent original kid-friendly movies, including “Migration” and “Elemental,...
