The Suicide Squad (2021)
False reviews. Worse than the first.
This movie is bad. Please don't waste your time, go volunteer at a homeless shelter for three hours.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Messy, ugly, nihilistic, fun.
You probably have to be a certain level of crazy to enjoy this movie to the extent I did. As a matter of fact, me and my two friends were the only ones laughing in the theater most of the time. At one scene in particular; when Harley is telling Diablo to man up to killing his kids. More specifically, "OWN THAT S&**" we all cracked up because it was so weirdly entertaining that it was awesome. I could tell from the advertising that the producer/directors decided to get really weird with this movie, and I'm so glad they did. Instead of being serious yet funny, they embraced the dynamic of these characters, sure it was messy, and the writing was awful at times. But if you forgive it for its sins, as all these characters have done; quite a bit. It is a great time to be alive when high budget movies can go so crazy and make so many people angry. This movie wasn't made for the general public, or even the comic nerds. This movie was made for the people who relate to these characters more than the heroes. The people who see the many shades of gray. If you enjoy this movie and your friends don't, you should probably find new friends, because this is the litmus test for how crazy you are.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Raises more questions than answers, good fun.
This was the 4TH best film in the franchise so far, behind the three originals, even return was a little bit better because it was an actual Star Wars film. This one was sort of like Star Trek meets Star Wars characters. It shouldn't even be under the scifi genre this was an action suspense/mystery movie? Why was it a mystery movie? Because they didn't explain the character origins of the MAIN CHARACTER. You thought Finn would be the main character because he was the focal point of the trailers and that he was introduced first and had a motive, BUT YOU'RE WRONG AS HELL. The actual main character is Ray which makes no sense because she isn't as interesting as Finn and she can pilot, scavenge, build, and USE THE FORCE?!! Why do they not explain this at all, she didn't even need a trainer to be able to use JEDI MIND TRICKS, FORCE FOCUS, OR FORCE RESIST. So in essence, instead of making Finn the main character with a motive and a back story, they missed an opportunity of making Ray the new Han Solo scavenger character... I know they're going to explain her origins more in the trilogy but generally, you need to have a main character that is all mystery, or explained enough to keep us interested and then reveal the rest later.
Next we get into the main villain: a young sith, oh wait I mean "First order" that goes by the name of Kylo Ren. He wears a scary mask and I guess wants to be more powerful than Darth Vader? He is Han and Leias kid which is what confuses me because they saw what happened to Anakin Skywalker. Leia's OWN FATHER. And yet they still let their own child use, and be influenced by the dark side. I get that Luke was training him or whatever but you'd think that at this point Luke AND LEIA WOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT STOPPING THIS FROM HAPPENING THAN ANYONE. But no, so now we basically have A new hope part 2. They even threw in some ugly sith lord looking guy that they call the "Supreme leader" Why is he even a part of this movie? He is shrouded in mystery and we have no idea what he does. AND IF HE IS GOING TO BE A PART OF THIS TRILOGY THEN WHY NOT INTRODUCE HIM LATER IN THE SERIES?! You know, how Palpatine wasn't introduced until Return of the Jedi but he was briefly mentioned by Vader which implied their was someone else in charge but that they weren't the main bad guy.
This movie already rips off of the A new hope so much and yet they don't even steal the most obvious things from it. So at this point the plot is so covered by questions that I couldn't focus on the good writing and INCREDIBLE look of the movie. The light saber duels look great and they are a perfect homage to the originals while also bringing a modern look to them. The movie is constantly funny like the originals without being corny or vomit inducing like the prequels. The love story is kept to a minimum between our main protagonist and I'm sad to say, but the worst actor in this movie is probably Carrie Fisher. She just has not aged well at all. And because of that when she talks she looks like a fish trying to gasp for air, I'm sorry, but she was not great. The new actors were above average and I really enjoyed the friendship dynamic between Fin and Po. AND YET FOR SOME REASON THEY USED PO AS A BACKGROUND CHARACTER THAT PILOTS AN EX WING. He is more interesting and fun than RAY, and yet he is used sparingly, but whatever,
I don't even care. We then get into the final act of the movie which is okay. It had some really good parts and some really bad parts. Really good: Lightsaber duel, Chewbacca going ham in that space station, Umm, I guess seeing Finn step up and care like a real human would was awesome. Really bad: Seeing Ray out duel Ren even though he is clearly super strong in the force and way more experienced with a light saber was really bad. Seeing the same death star but bigger be destroyed FOR THE THIRD TIME IN THE NEW STAR WARS FRANCHISE WAS AWFUL. It was done in a New hope, it was done in Return, NOW WHY, DID THEY HAVE TO GO ALL OUT AND BRING ANOTHER FREAKING SUPER DEATH PLANET INTO THE MIX?! This would've been way better if this was the plot to return, or if this was the plot in the third movie of the series? But not the first freaking movie. You mean to tell me that these characters were ready to face off against Ren and the first order? And that these 5 ex wings were ready to destroy the DEATH PLANET that literally destroyed 5 entire moons earlier in the movie.
Btw, what moons were those? Why were they important to us? Wasn't seeing one single planet in Alderaan in a New hope get destroyed way more of an impact because we knew what the planet was to our main characters? In this one I literally thought "COOL LASWERRRR" then they destroyed the moons/planets and I didn't even care. All in all, 7/10.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Technically speaking, best movie ever.
Before I even talk about the plot, or the actors, I Would just like to say that this films visual effects/cinematography were incredible. No, not mind boggling cgi, just flat out great camera work and practical effects. The costume and make up designers need to sweep the awards this year for their work. I walked out of the film and only hours later did I realize how good they were. Reason being, because nothing was wrong with it. The camera work and effects were so smooth I couldn't appreciate how good they were because they actually complemented the plot instead of distracting the viewer from it. That being said, oh my goodness best looking movie of all time imo. 11/10 From the looks of it, only the new Star Wars film even comes close but we will see when the actual movie roles. Okay, that was just my review on the visuals of the film, lets talk aboot that plot eh?
PLOT 8/10- It is what is, an action/post apocalyptic film can only have so good of a plot story before it gets too cluttered, this film does the best with what it has, a cool setting, cool characters, and really cool cars. The third part of the movie where they find Charlize's old biker clan is the weakest part of the plot, yet at the same time, it was necessary. That's the main strength of this plot, everything was necessary, no extra back story/flashbacks were handed to us, no unnecessary expostion, we were left to interpret based off of brief dialogue and voices in Max's head as to what has lead to these characters acting the way they did. This, should be the way every action movie models its plot after, nothing too deep, yet just enough to make us understand and care. Similar to the plot of taken in that we don't need information on how the villains came to be, or how our hero came to be so heroic, we are left to think, a wonderful tool in these types of films.
ACTING 9/10- Acting wise I was surprised. With the exception of the "breeders", everyone was fit really well in their parts. Never have been a huge Hardy fan, but surprisingly roles where he talks less makes his performances better. Although he only has around 20 lines in the movie, the ones he mumbles out either made me laugh or made me realize he was disturbed. Charlize played a strong female lead who was kickass and is not over the top at the same time. With the exception of the part where she reunites with her old clan, all of her lines were necessary. The villains were awesome for the most part, my only complaint would be that we only really got to spend time with two of them, the third one, the fat one, was more of a side piece. None the less, great acting across the board.
PACING 9/10- Start your engines, make sure you have enough gas to last for two hours because this one does not let up. From the opening scene of the movie till the canyon scene towards the end you will be thrown into an atmospheric fast paced film that is both exhilarating, and memorable. Although not every great action film is paced like this, it just works in this one, with every thing being so over the top, from the insane guitar creep, to the unbreakable bones of our hero, I don't know, it just freaking works.
Visuals- 10/10
GO SEE IT.
Argo (2012)
Argo, The film America needs to see!
In today's cluttered movie industry, movie makers are required to dream up entirely new worlds, with complex endings, and a twist at every turn. But amidst all the clutter, and above all the complexity, a shining light of a movie named Argo breaks through, and director Ben Affleck delivers a flat out good movie.
Perhaps what Argo does for me above all else, is give me hope for the movie industry. The fact that someone can still take a story that everyone knows the ending to, make it exciting, engaging, with a bit of light comedy, and keep us on the edge of our seats till the very end, gives me hope for future films. This proves, we don't always need everyone to die at the end, or for the main character to wake up and it was all a dream, to make a good movie, sometimes, a happy ending isn't so bad.
I'll be honest, the only reason I even considered seeing Argo was because I saw the commercial during the final episode of the first half of season 5 for Breaking Bad. Me, being a huge Bryan Cranston fan, had to see if he could deliver in another role besides Breaking Bad. But what I got in return, was much greater.
But what makes Argo such a great movie? Well, to start, the pacing. Argo is a slow movie, but at no point, did I feel like they were trying to drag on the story, they spent a good amount of time making the movie, and rightfully so, it's not easy making a movie that doesn't exist. Next in line, the acting. While Ben Affleck delivers a solid role as Tony Mendez, it is truly the supporting actors that carry the load. Alan Arkin, provides most of the laughs, with his catch phrase, "Ar-go f#*k yourself." he helps ease the tension in the movie. John Goodman, comes off as a honest to god good guy, that just wants to help, which is rare in Hollywood. Last but not least, Bryan Cranston, who has a medium sized role in the movie, does a fine job telling off government officials. While Bryan's acting is fantastic, it's really the roles that hold him back, but one of these days, he is going to find a role in a movie that perfectly suits him, and it is going to be glorious.
Although Argo isn't a perfect film, (lack of subtitles anyone?). It delivers as an above average thriller, with a heart warming ending. It's not the movie America needs, but the one, it deserves.
Breaking Bad: Gliding Over All (2012)
I used to love to go camping.
But then I took a meth lab to the knee.
Gliding over all is the 8th episode of the 5th and final season of Breaking Bad.
After a very short 2 months, we are at the mid season break of our favorite show on television. No, not small town security, BREAKING BAD!
Gliding over all starts off with a very still Heisenberg, looking at, what other than, a fly! Remind anyone of another episode? No? OK, moving on.
Jesse swings by the shed to confirm with Heisenberg that Mike made it out OK, Heisenberg replies with a very straight forward "He's gone." Jesse, having the analyzing skills of a 5th grader, believes that Mike truly made it out OK, I expect that to be a major part of the story next year.
After that, Heisenberg consults with Todd's uncle, and then, we get a very dark two minute stretch of men being shanked, tossed, burned, and beaten to death in prison. One may think after this, "wow, this show can't get much darker than that" One, would in fact, be wrong. The scene then skips to Heisenberg holding his year old daughter or so, while watching a news special about all the men that were just murdered in prison, so father like.
Now, to the important parts, we get to the best conversation in the show, Hank comes home from a very stressful day at work finding out that all 9 men have been murdered, aka, the only 9 men that knew anything about Gustavo's operation, after Hank talks to Heisenberg about his old job, and how this job is hurting him physically/emotionally, Heisenberg then calmly replies, "I used to love to go camping" Referencing the old days when him and Jesse used to cook out in the boonies in a beat up RV.
To avoid sounding like an echo, I'll assume you know the rest of the show and skip to the good part, Walt is, and I quote, "Done", that's right folks, you heard it from Walter himself, but then again, they don't show any proof of him dissolving the business so, it's pure speculation.
Now, if you're still reading this, here is my review of the episode! This episode does a great job of relieving some stress off of the show itself, IE: getting rid of mike's prison connections, paying off Jesse, and FINALLY, Walter and Skyler are talking again, I know, I finally called him Walter, he FINALLY is kind of likable again. But to every happy moment, there is a 5'7 Dea agent to stick his bald head in the wrong place, and that just happens to be Hank. Although this wasn't a surprising ending, it is a HUGE cliff hanger, so while we are all waiting another 8 months to see the final episodes of Breaking Bad, we can try and guess what is going to happen, but until then, I rate this episode, a ten, out of ten.
Breaking Bad: Say My Name (2012)
Shut the f**k up, and let me die in peace.
Wow... Is all I could say, I literally just finished viewing this episode and I am very much still in shock about what just happened.
Say my name is the 7th episode of the 5th and final season of Breaking Bad. And perhaps the most emotion wrenching episode of Breaking Bad thus far.
After finding out last week that Jesse and Mike were leaving the game for good you knew something tragic was going to happen, as I said in my review of last weeks episode, "I think Mike's fate is coming soon" but in the manner that it happened, no one could predict it to go down this way.
This episode starts off with a very egotistical Walter, or should we just throw that name in the garbage and tell it like it is, his name is Heisenburg, And he wants to build an empire.
After paying Mike off and getting an entire cartel to work for him, Walt tries to innocently play off Jesse's plea that he is going to leave for good, but as it turns out, Jesse isn't the same idiot he has been in past seasons, and Heisenburg isn't Walter anymore. He believes Jesse truly wants to stay in the Meth game, to build an EMPIRE! As he does, but he's dead wrong, just like the child Todd killed. Jesse is done, so what does Heisenburg do? Replaces him with the very man that is responsible for Jesse's change of heart, Todd.
As things continue to get worst with Skyler, we see no signs of Marie or Walt Jr, it appears as if Heisenburg and Skyler, have no communication with their kids what so ever.
But one thing hasn't changed, is the Dea's interest in Mike, and Hank, being relentless as ever, finally got to the bottom of it, and furthermore proved, why you should always, call Saul.
Everything after the park scene in this episode, well, I think you remember quite clearly.
This episode is absolutely the best episode of the entire season, and after 4 straight incredible episodes, season 5 is quickly moving up my list for the best season of Breaking Bad so far. Not only am I thinking about what just happened, but what is going to happen next week, all the problems this creates, does Heisenburg tell Jesse? Does Jesse become the enemy? Enough of me rambling, if you have yet to see this episode, GO WATCH IT NOW, I don't care how, I don't care who you kill to see it, just do it. I think I'm with the majority here, when I say, this episode was a perfect 10.
Breaking Bad: Buyout (2012)
Miracle whip, is not mayonnaise!
Three consecutive great episodes all creating problems for Walter!
Buyout is the 6th episode of the 5th and final season of Breaking Bad, and what an episode it was.
After last weeks tragic ending I couldn't wait till this weeks episode, what starts off with a very somber beginning quickly spirals out of control, first we get a glimpse of how far Walt will go to justify the actions of not only him, but Todd, a guy he barely knows. I know, I'm starting to hate Walter to.
Jesse is starting to become the Walter of season one, while Walter is being completely absorbed by his altar ego "Heisenburg".
Then we get a huge shocker! After Jesse hears Walter whistling a joyous little tune in his tent, Jesse and Mike tell Walter they're leaving the business for good! And finally, we get a little more insight into Walter's past, we hear about the business he founded "Gray Matter" if you recall the name of an episode from season 1, and it turns out it is worth 2.16 BILLION DOLLARS. This (in my opinion) is the best episode from this season so far. Walter shows his true intentions and why he doesn't cash out with Mike and Jesse. Because this is the only thing he has left, he wants to create an empire, and he will do anything he can to do so. Including burn a hole through his own hand! I have a feeling Mike's fate is coming soon.
If you're the very observative type, you'll notice how whenever Walt, Jesse, and Mike vote for things, one has gone against Mike, one has gone against Jesse, but none have gone against Walter... yet.
All in all, this episode does a great job at bringing in another enemy, (The man who wants to buy all the methylamine) and showing how desperate Walt is, along with a fantastic script, this episode was very easy for me to rate. A perfect 10/10.
Breaking Bad: Dead Freight (2012)
A cold, dead, stop.
First off, I would just like to say, hats off to Vince Gilligan and the entire Breaking Bad crew, they continue to push out great episode, after great episode, after-
Dead freight- The fifth episode of the final season of Breaking Bad. So this episode starts off with a young boy, no older than 13, riding his dirt bike through the boonies catching a nice big spider, moving on. The scene them moves to an emotional Walt literally sobbing at Hanks desk, you may say, "that isn't very Walt like" That's because, it isn't really happening, Walter is just putting on an act for dear ol' Hank so he can have some alone time to plant a bug or two in his office. It's ironic really, Walter is hiding his secret life from Hank yet putting bugs in his office so he can prevent him from finding out about his secret life. But I digress. Anyways, the first thing you'll notice about this episode is it isn't a progress episode, what I mean by that is, it doesn't move us forward in the story, if anything, it sets us back. (a way to save some content for later episodes I presume} The three amigos, Walter, Jesse, and Mike are once again out of the precious methylamine, as they were in the season opener. So, needless to say, they have to talk to their dear friend Lydia to get some more, but as it turns out. She didn't plant the bugs, so sorry Mike, you can't kill her... yet. Anyways, Walter and Jesse Meticulously plan out every little detail for their dear heist in order to hopefully get enough Methylamine to last them for a while. Walter goes home, checks on Sky, yep, still hates him. She's convinced herself someone is going to knock on the door pop Walt, and kill off his kids. Foreshadowing? Doubt it, but she does agree to be his slave (launder his money, keep her big mouth shut) as long as the kids stay away. Walt has a little surprise for her as well though, she has to go to therapy! About time. Anyways, as we progress. or digress... they run into a few complications, like random dude with a big truck way out in nowhere land, sure, no big deal. But, as always, their plan is fool proof and after a few high fives are exchanged some celebrating and smiles, a little kid gets shot. Wait, rewind. Remember little arachnid lover from the beginning? As it turns out, his parents weren't keeping a close eye on him, he runs right into Walt, Jesse, and, Todd? I believe his name is. Anyways, Todd greets him with a wave and in one fluid motion shoots the kid down. And, that's it. Episode over, as my title implies, this episode gives no clues as to what is next in the season, it's just a cold, dead, stop.
9/10.
Breaking Bad: Fifty-One (2012)
Season 5 is finally getting back to the breaking bad we know and love
If you've seen this episode already, you need not read this for you already know how intense this episode is. If you haven't, then you are in for a real treat, what starts off as a slow and monotonous we've seen it before episode. Quickly turns into an emotional roller coaster, not only does this episode show the quickening mental health decline of Skyler, but it also sheds some light upon the season opener, and why Walt was in the middle of nowhere on his 52nd birthday breaking his own bacon. But it is also bringing back our favorite character from the entire show, no, not Walt, HEISENBURG! As soon as you see him put on the hat and step up to Skyler, you know what is soon to follow. I feel this is one of my favorite breaking bad episodes thus far, Walt and Jesse step up to Mike, and this ensures Walt is truly the leader of their little operation, and, it creates a huge dilemma in Walt and Skyler's marriage. Will Skyler snap out of her drama queen attitude, or will this turn into a much bigger problem, not only for their marriage, but for Walt's business? All I know is, I cant wait for next week! (Side note) Also, I could be wrong, but does anyone else believe Skyler is smoking in the house to bring Walt's cancer back quicker?
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
Legendary!
This is unlike any sitcom i have ever seen on TV, the writers of this show are visionaries. Its hard to explain how great this show is without babbling, so ill start off on why this show is so successful in the first place. 1. The title of the show is actually the whole point of the show, not just some general outline like "Family matters", or "Big Bang Theory". Ted is telling his children, (which is basically us) the story of how he met their mother and his future wife. 2. Neil Patrick Harris. He adds that spark that makes this show different than any other show, he is not the typical womanizing jack-wagon that you would see on every other sitcom, he has superb acting and plays his part to perfection, whoever came up with the idea he would always wear a suit, or how he would never tell the rest of the cast what he did for a job he just replies a simple "haha please." is ingenious. they couldn't of cast his role more perfectly. 3. Running gags. This show has numerous running gags, Like how I mentioned above, every time one of the cast members ask NPH what he does for a living he simply responds "haha please". Or the "slapbet", which has been going on since season two, or just the simple things the characters say such as "Legendary" or, Suit up! 4. The time line. The fact How I met your mother goes along with real world time gives the show a more down to earth feeling, and gives the feeling like these characters are from another planet and deal with real world struggles like us. 5. Last but not least, and obviously enough, the cast! As i've said before Neil Patrick Harris is perfect for his role but other cast members are not to be overshadowed, Josh Radnor as Ted is a great fit, he is a lovable main character that actually has different emotions, some episodes he is the perfect gentleman, while some he can be, well a bit of a d bag. Jason Segel is great as a best friend, Cobie Smulders as Robin is the main characters first love who fit perfectly into the group but always has her own life going on that the group really never pays attention to. And Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin, her character is a bit of an enigma, (ill get to that later.) Now as great as this show is, it does have a few minor flaws. 1. Sometimes it loses focus on what is actually funny and what is well, just pointless. Such as in recent episodes Lily and Marshall practically have their own spin off show, which is fine, but they are not the highlight of the show, they are great with the group but the main focus should almost always be on Ted and Barnie. Now I understand that they need to kill some time so the show could go a season longer, but they could easily make the group go on vacation or do something crazy, there are millions of different ideas. 2.I don't know if the writers purposely do this or if it actually is a mistake, but on some occasions Alyson Hannigan will say something very corny and it is just really bad, and you hear the laugh track laughing and it is just... to put it straight forward, unbearable. And In some episodes she acts like a housewife on a 90's sitcom and it would be better if she just acted like the lovable girl she is most of the time! 3. As i've said before very minor but, in some episodes I feel as if Josh Radnor is depressed and just reading his lines and not even trying to act, but then again that could be part of the show, not everyone is happy all the time, but it is just really depressing to see him like that. But all in all this is the only TV show i've been able to watch for its entire run in the past 10 years! It is genuinely funny and as i've said before, the writers are ingenious! 10/10.
