We recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but we'd later learn that Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, would no longer direct the project after initially being attached to return. His departure was described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
Now, THR (via SFFGazette.com) the next instalment in the popular franchise has enlisted a new director, with Grant Sputore set to take the helm.
Sputore doesn't have much experience, having come from the world of commercials, but he does have one feature under his belt: The 2019 sci-fi movie I Am Mother starring Hilary Swank.

I Am Mother director Grant Sputore is the filmmaker charged with the next Godzilla x Kong film, as Adam Wingard opts to make Onslaught instead.
There’s no stopping the Monsterverse, probably the most active cinematic universe this side of Marvel-land at the moment. Warner Bros enjoyed another success this year with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the second movie in the series to be directed by Adam Wingard.
Wingard’s pair of films impressed few on the critical side, yet there’s no arguing with the box office. At a point in cinema history where genuine hits are thin on the ground, fair play to Mr Wingard and his team: they’re delivering.
Wingard has a slate of other projects calling for his attention – including the long-mooted Face/Off 2 – and so opted out of directing the next Godzilla x Kong, whatever it turns out to be (in spite...

Adam Wingard obliterated the kaiju-sized box office earlier this year with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," the follow-up film to his moderate hit, "Godzilla vs. Kong." Wingard, a director who cut his teeth in the horror genre, was a fresh and exciting new voice to take over everyone's favorite monstrous, radioactive lizard and gigantic gorilla antiheroes. A few weeks back, Wingard announced that he would not be returning for whatever the next installment of Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise would bring, sending the studio on a hunt for their next director. It's a difficult task, to be sure, as Wingard brought some serious silliness to the franchise, opting for films that feel like spending millions of dollars to bring a playfully imaginative game of clashing titans to life.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

Mechagodzilla is undoubtedly one of the coolest aspects of the MonsterVerse. The villain introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong gave us some visually extravagant scenes and proved a tough adversary for the Titans. Surprisingly, the villain was not initially planned for Godzilla vs. Kong but for another MonsterVerse project.

He's best known for starring in Amazon's romcoms Purple Hearts, Red, White & Royal Blue, and The Idea of You, and recently received praise for his work alongside Julianne Moore in Mary & George. Black Adam star Noah Centineo was previously attached to the role but exited in 2021.

In 1997, Disney released its animated film Hercules, which became a major hit globally. It earned an amazing $252.7 million on an $85 million budget, which was an exceptional amount of money back then, and it made history as one of Disney’s most beloved animated features. The original movie featured the voice talents of Tate Donovan (as Hercules), Danny DeVito (as Philoctetes), James Woods (as Hades), and Susan Egan (as Megara), some of who reprised their roles in the sequel animated series and the animated prequel. But, with Disney doing its series of live-action remakes of its animated classics, we know that Hercules is also being remade, and some recent rumors suggest that we have a chief candidate for the role of Megara!

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released a couple of months ago as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. And while the movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, the fans loved it and the movie became one of the biggest titles on the box office this year, earning a lot of money. Who's ready to start their midweek, Hump Day grind on a bit of a mixed note? The good news is that I'll never again use the phrase "Hump Day grind" because, frankly, that just sounds unbearably filthy. Okay, the real good news is that Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures continue to be in the business of making money and remain intent on keeping their kaiju-sized MonsterVerse movies going. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the next installment will have to do so without the involvement of director and writer Adam Wingard.

The director of the last two Godzilla and Kong movies has opted to not return for a third, as Adam Wingard focuses on other projects.
Given that Adam Wingard has a film slate that is dauntingly long, it was always pretty clear that something would have to give. As well as a presumed third instalment in the Godzilla and Kong joined franchise (feel free to join those two names with a Vs or an X or whatever works for you), the in-demand director has a laundry list of other projects.
There’s a sequel to John Woo’s beloved 1997 action movie, Face/Off that we know is in the works. That one seems to be gathering a little pace too, with reports emerging last month stating that both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are willing to reprise their roles from the original film. Adam Wingard will not return to direct the “Godzilla x Kong” sequel, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The filmmaker behind Legendary’s last two MonsterVerse hits — 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” and 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” — won’t return for a third installment. However, the door remains open for Wingard to return in the future.
The filmmaker didn’t have a deal in place to return, and will next direct “Onslaught” for A24 with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall. Wingard will direct from a script that he wrote with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.
Wingard also has a “ThunderCats” movie in development at Warner Bros. centered on the 1985-1990 animated TV show about feline humanoids fighting to survive on a desolate planet against incredible odds.

THR reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard will not return for the sequel. According to insiders, the split is amicable and was due to scheduling issues, but the door remains open for Wingard to come back to the franchise down the line.
The studio had been keen on Wingard returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, but no deal was in place for him to do so. The director had been open to returning, previously saying, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. There’s also ways to continue to innovate the stylized approach to the MonsterVerse, and what’s great about the MonsterVerse is that it’s allowed so many different directors to approach it with their unique style and color palette.” However, Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall,...

Godzilla and Kong have smashed their last building for Adam Wingard. At least for now.
Wingard, who has directed the last two of Legendary’s hit MonsterVerse movies, will not be returning for a third installment, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.
Wingard is coming off directing and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, which has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its March 29 domestic opening. Wingard, who didn’t have a deal for any new installment, said he had more stories to tell during the press tour but also unveiled a new original feature project that he wanted to tackle before another monster movie. That project, an action thriller titled Onslaught, was picked up in a competitive sale by A24 and is prepping for a fall shoot.

The Monsterverse will continue! THR reports that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to pen the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has proven to be a big success. The film is still in theaters, but it’s already grossed $548 million worldwide, making it one of the more profitable movies in the Monsterverse franchise, as it reportedly had a budget of just $135 million. Dave Callaham is no stranger to the Monsterverse, as he wrote the early drafts of the film that started the franchise: Godzilla.
Although the studio would like Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard to return for the sequel, there is no deal for him to do so. Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall, which is said to be in the same vein as his previous cult classic movies, The Guest and You’re Next.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse.
The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series.
The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.

After numerous false starts, Netflix was all set to develop a feature take on the beloved animated series back in 2022, but we recently got word that the latest attempt to get the project off the ground had also fallen by the wayside.
However, we'd later learn that Amazon/MGM Studios had acquired the movie, with Bumblebee director Travis Knight in talks to helm. Now, multiple trades are reporting that Knight has officially signed on, and the movie is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.
Chris Butler rewrote the script from an initial draft by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Previously, the Nee Brothers (The Lost City) were attached to direct.

The Masters of the Universe toy and cartoon franchise got a live-action film adaptation back in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren taking on the role of lead hero He-Man, who defends the planet Eternia (and the rest of the universe) from evil forces, usually headed up by the villain Skeletor. To cut costs, the majority of the film is set on 1980s Earth, with He-Man and various other characters being transported from Eternia to Earth with the use of a “Cosmic Key.” Another live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe has been in development hell for a long time, but it looks like might finally escape into production, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios have announced that the movie will be receiving a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. Technically, summer in the northern hemisphere won’t begin until June 21st in 2026, but this is considered a summer release because summer starts early in the movie industry.

Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Mattel’s Masters of the Universe movie hasn’t had the easiest path, but the long-in-development project has taken a big step forward as Deadline reports that Bumblebee director Travis Knight is in final negotiations to helm the movie.
Although Deadline cautions that the deal is still coming together, the report states that Knight was the only director in the mix to give an in-person presentation, which made him the top choice for the gig. Chris Butler will rewrite the script from the previous draft penned by David Callaham, Aaron and Adam Nee. The project was previously set up at Netflix, but the streaming service scrapped the project last summer. It was later reported that the movie could find a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, and according to Deadline, they’re now in final negotiations for the rights.
