[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Sugar Season 1 Episode 7 “The Friends You Keep.”] Now that the big secret about Colin Farrell‘s private investigator is out—he’s an alien!—the show can lean into that. And that includes a change to Sugar‘s opening credits, which now end with his eyes glowing. It was always the plan to do that following the reveal in Episode 6, says executive producer Audrey Chon. “We were hiding a lot of things and we thought it’s just kind of a wink and a nod to revealing that he’s an alien at that point,” she tells TV Insider. Sugar’s investigation into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), the granddaughter of producer Jonathan (James Cromwell), led to him meeting Melanie (Amy Ryan), Olivia’s former stepmother. The two have bonded, and he’s turned to her at points, but he can’t tell her his secret, as much as he wants ...

Avengelyne is an American comic book series that, despite the fact that it never became a mainstream work, became a fantasy cult classic title that many fans remember quite dearly. The series was created by Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian, and focuses on Avengelyne, an angel who has to fight the forces of evil and is one of the most prominent female comic book heroines outside the mainstream universes. Avengelyne #1, the first issue of the series, appeared in May 1995, and the most recent iteration of the comic book ended in 2012. We have recently reported that a film adaptation of the comic is in the works, and we have now received some interesting new info about the project.
We reported earlier that Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company acquired the rights to a cinematic adaptation, with Olivia Wilde eyed to direct. Robbie herself was initially attached simply as a producer, but...

Olivia Wilde will direct and Margot Robbie will star in an adaptation of comic book Avengelyne, it’s been announced.
Comic book writer Rob Liefeld’s biggest success is undoubtably Deadpool, which Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick brought to the screen to huge critical and commercial success – Deadpool And Wolverine, which sees Hugh Jackman reprise his iconic role, will be released in UK cinemas on the 26th July. You can watch the trailer here.
Warner Bros is now very close to closing a deal on another of Liefeld’s comics, Avengelyne. Furthermore, Margot Robbie – as you probably gleaned from the cunning headline to this piece – is circling the lead role.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium,...

Earlier this month, we learned that Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde are teaming up to bring the comic book character Avengelyne, who was created by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, to the big screen. Wilde, who previously directed Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling, will be directing the film, with Robbie producing through her company LuckyChap – and there’s a chance that she’ll end up playing the title character as well, although her reps were denying that at the time of the earlier report. Now Deadline has broken the news that the Avengelyne project has landed at Warner Bros., with the studio negotiating to close a seven figure film rights deal. It makes sense that WB wanted it, since they just had a $1.4 billion success with Robbie and LuckyChap’s Barbie.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is negotiating to close a seven-figure film-rights deal for Avengelyne — Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld’s signature comic book creation about an angel who fights the forces of evil.
Most of the deals are closed. Deadline hears Margot Robbie is eyeing to star as the title character (subject to script), Olivia Wilde will direct, and Poor Things scribe Tony McNamara will write the screenplay. Aboard to produce is LuckyChap, the shingle Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon through their Genre banner.
This one came to Warner Bros, and the studio pre-empted it. It is the second big deal for the studio in a week. Warner Bros has closed a 7-figure deal to secure a rights package for a movie about Chris Farley that Paul Walter Hauser will star in, with Josh Gad directing. The Avengelyne deal is even bigger.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Sugar Season 1 Episode 5 “Boy in the Corner.”] Heading into the second half of the season, Sugar begins to reveal some details about the case that has the titular private investigator (Colin Farrell) hooked. Sugar was hired by Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to look into his granddaughter Olivia’s disappearance. And the investigation leads the Pi to none other than her half-brother, Davy (Nathan Corddry), after he told psychopath Stallings (Eric Lange) that she knew about the accusations leveled against him by women. Why have Olivia’s kidnapping be tied into that? During his investigation, Sugar’s become embedded into the Siegel family and learning their motivations and what’s happened to Olivia as well as what they’re covering up (including what Davy did), explains executive producer Audrey Chon. “It’s all tied together in this secret of lies that Sugar’s uncovering throughout the season,” she teases. It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of his own 50 page short story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. Now Deadline reports that Universal has scored another Colin Bannon deal, pre-emptively purchasing his short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star and M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2 writer Akela Cooper writing the screenplay, based on an unpublished Bannon short story.

Akela Cooper (M3GAN, Malignant, The Nun 2) has been set to adapt the screenplay for a new Universal horror movie based on a Colin Bannon-penned short story, Don’t Look. Per Deadline, the mysterious new horror film will star Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion, Antebellum).
Don’t Look is based on Colin Bannon’s unpublished short story, giving us not a single clue in terms of plot, and the logline for the Universal feature remains under wraps at this time.
Bannon is on a hot streak. Last month, the writer made a Universal deal for his horror short story Long Lost, produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Pictures, Scott Glassgold, and his Ground Control Entertainment. That feature film adaptation is said to be “In the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby, telling the story of a recently married woman whose life is...

After parodying his attempts to become an action-movie star in the Quibi/Roku short film series Die Hart (later compiled into a Amazon Prime feature), Kevin Hart goes for the gold in the genre and attempts to do the real thing in Lift, an absurdly ridiculous, over the top but still entertaining heist movie that strains credibility at every turn — but who cares because it’s got Hart.

Exclusive: A wild pre-holiday auction for a Ryan Reynolds global heist comedy vehicle is coming to a close, with Netflix winning the deal. Deadline revealed the untitled pitch last week, when the creatives did the rounds to pitch directly — something that hasn’t happened much since the pandemic –and the 7-figure bids began hitting the table. Dana Fox will write the script, and Simon Kinberg is producing with Reynolds.
The pitch is untitled, but I’ve heard it has great parts for an ensemble in the spirit of an Oceans Eleven. It is also set in the international arena. The idea originated from Fox and Kinberg, and they pitched it to Reynolds and Maximum Effort.
There were eight buyers in the mix, and that whittled down to five and finally four before Netflix prevailed. Sources said Fox will be paid mid 7-figures to write it and the producing deals are high 7-figures.

Kevin Hart could be on cloud nine if he can pull off a high-flying heist operation in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming comedy-thriller Lift.
