Belt-tightening and cost-cutting continues across Hollywood as the Peak TV era has come to a close, and another legacy TV brand is being shuttered as a result.
Sony Television is shutting down its TriStar Television banner, which recently has been responsible for series like “Lucky Hank” (AMC), “The Afterparty” (Apple TV+), “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” (Showtime), “The Last Tycoon” (Amazon), and “Good Girls Revolt” (Amazon). In its heyday, TriStar TV produced and distributed “The Nanny,” “Mad About You,” and many more series.
A source says the decision is part of a larger shift around Sony Pictures Television’s boutique labels, not unlike the shuttering of the Gemstone brand several years ago, and that the hope is to weave all of TriStar’s values and goals into the bigger studio.

After a nine-year revival, Sony’s TriStar Television label, which was behind such series as The Afterparty, is being phased out again. Its two top executives, EVP Jennifer Turner, who ran the unit for the past two and a half years, and SVP Nicole Norwood, will be departing the studio. TriStar Television has no current series on the air. Its development slate will be taken over by Sony Pictures Television’s drama development team.
This marks the second such move of centralizing development under Katherine Pope since she became President of Sony Pictures TV in July 2022. The TV studio’s other boutique label, Gemstone, was folded into Spt in November 2022.
After being dormant for more than a decade, the TriStar Television brand was revived in 2015 as a boutique production unit within Sony Pictures Television. Suzanne Patmore Gibbs led the division from its relaunch until her sudden death in 2018, making it...

Sony Pictures Television is closing TriStar Television, the studio behind Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” and AMC’s “Lucky Hank.”
As Sony shutters the division and folds the studio into the larger TV org, executive vice president Jennifer Turner and senior vice president of development Nicole Norwood are exiting the company. Other staff cuts are not expected as a result of TriStar TV closing and the Sony TV drama department will take oversight of current TriStar’s current TV projects.
Sources tell Variety that the move to shut down TriStar TV, which also produced series including “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” “Good Girls Revolt” and “The Last Tycoon,” is part of an overall strategy shift at Sony Pictures Entertainment regarding its boutique labels.

Sony Pictures Television is shuttering its TriStar TV banner.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that TriStar TV exec vp Jennifer Turner and senior vp development Nicole Norwood are leaving as the division is being folded into the larger Sony TV fold. No additional layoffs are expected to come as part of the move.
Reps for Sony declined comment.
The decision to absorb TriStar TV into the larger Sony Pictures Television fold comes at a time of industry-wide consolidation as streamers, networks and studios alike right-size their programming and staffing needs in an era of belt-tightening following the end of the Peak TV phenomenon.
TriStar TV’s mission was to champion diverse, authentic characters and underrepresented voices. Those values have since been incorporated into the larger studio, overseen by Katherine Pope, to whom Turner reported. Sony Pictures Television Studios’ drama department will now oversee the development of current TriStar TV projects.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Boys in the Boat (George Clooney)
This is, from start to finish, an underdog sports picture. Edgerton puts a welcome spin on the gruff-but-caring coach archetype, and Turner does the same with his lead character. Soft-spoken, stern, and handsome, this is a role someone like Ronald Reagan would have excelled at bringing to the screen some 80 years ago; Turner, luckily, is more interesting to look at and a better actor. Alexandre Desplat’s score is maybe the most playful thing about this film, and it works when it needs to. The race sequences are unquestionably Boys‘ highlight, Clooney making use of zoom lenses and well-placed cameras to capture the speed and fluidity of each competition. There is a real tension mined in these scenes,...

Warner Bros. Discovery, just over two years after closing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, will be “opportunistic” about seeking M&a deals in the next two or three years, president and CEO David Zaslav said.
“I think some companies will be for sale,” Zaslav said, speaking Thursday at the Bernstein 40th Annual Strategic Decisions Conference in New York. “We can be opportunistic but we’re going to be very disciplined.”
“I think there’s likely going to be some consolidation. There are a lot of players. There are a lot of players that are losing a lot of money,” Zaslav said. “One of the reasons why we really fought to drive our free cash flow and pay down our debt is to be in a position — as we roll out globally, as we fight to build our business — that we’re a healthy company.”
Speaking of losing money, Warner Bros.

Susan Noles, a contestant on the first season of The Golden Bachelor, has come to the defense of the show’s leading man, Gerry Turner, and claimed she knows the real reason for his split from Theresa Nist. Speaking on the latest episode of SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Noles slammed Nist for making a promise to Turner she couldn’t keep, claiming the divorce happened because the golden rose recipient didn’t want to move. “I’ve gotta support [Turner] a little bit. I feel like he got the wrong end of it,” Noles said, per Entertainment Tonight. “Theresa decided not to move and not to quit her job. He got frustrated. Who can blame him? I mean, I would’ve never said I would move to that place, wherever that is in the middle of nowhere.” Turner, a retired restaurateur, lives at a lake house in Indiana,...

Susan Noles, who insists she never had a love connection with Turner, recently appeared on SiriusXM on The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham and weighed in on the golden divorce. “I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.

Joan Vassos, a 61-year-old Maryland native, is set to become the very first golden bachelorette. Vassos briefly appeared on The Golden Bachelor before self-eliminating from the competition. While plenty of fans are excited to see Vassos take center stage in the fall, her involvement was a bit surprising. Many viewers assumed her early exit made her a longshot for the role of the first-ever golden bachelorette. It might have been more helpful than harmful.
We think Joan Vassos’ early exit on ‘The Golden Bachelor’ helped her land her new job
While it is impossible to say for certain, it seems possible that Vassos’s early exit from the series and the reason behind that exit made her more marketable to the team behind The Golden Bachelor and The Golden Bachelorette. Vassos’ decision to leave in week 3 to help her daughter through postpartum depression was certainly noble. It cemented her in...

Rapper Sean Kingston is at the center of a criminal investigation that has led law enforcement to raid his South Florida mansion. The incident occurred on Thursday and resulted in the arrest of Kingston’s mother, Janice Turner.
According to a public information officer at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, detectives served arrest and search warrants at Kingston’s residence in Southwest Ranches as part of an investigation that began in Dania Beach. Working with the Bso’s Strategic Investigations Unit and Davie Police Swat, authorities executed the raid and took Turner, 61, into custody on numerous fraud and theft charges.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear whether there is an arrest warrant for Kingston himself. However, the musician addressed the raid on his Instagram Stories and assured his followers, “People love negative energy! I am good, and so is my mother! My lawyers are handling everything as we speak.

Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf flick "The Howling" boasts one of the most impressive werewolf transformation scenes in the genre's history. A vicious serial killer named Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) confront's the film's protagonist, Karen (Dee Wallace), an investigative reporter recovering from a previous attack at a woods-bound therapy camp. Lit through the slits in Venetian blinds, Quist's face extends and mutates, his mouth ripping into a terrifying wolf grin, his eyes bulging. Karen witnesses the entire transformation and is, naturally, terrified. Quist was already known for his penchant for murder, but learning that he is a werewolf makes him that much more monstrous. The effects were provided by the amazing Rob Bottin.
"The Howling," while a corker of a monster movie, is also a clever satire of then-modern therapy. A certain kind of "touchy-feely" language had come into vogue in the late '70s and early '80s, and...

"I'm very much an in-the-moment actress. I suppose I just kind of wing it…
“…because I feel that as long as I know my character, I should be able to be spontaneous on set.
“I learn something new everyday about myself as an actor, my capabilities. How far I can stretch myself, throw out emotions I never knew I had…”

Joan Vassos is set to appear this fall as the first-ever Golden Bachelorette. Vassos is familiar with the world of dating competitions. She appeared in Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor and was a fan favorite before self-eliminating in week three. While Vassos is optimistic about her chances of finding love on The Golden Bachelorette, fans shouldn’t get prepped for another golden wedding. Vassos recently revealed wedding bells aren’t in her near future, despite being the lead on a dating show that regularly ends in engagement.
Joan Vassos isn’t getting married immediately after ‘The Golden Bachelorette’
Joan Vassos is excited about the prospect of finding her perfect match. Still, The Golden Bachelorette fans shouldn’t expect to see the mother of four and educator walk down the aisle on national TV just months after her season airs. Unlike Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, Vassos is in no rush to marry.

Known as the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock left a legacy that the filmmakers still use while writing tense scripts and making horror and thriller movies. His most influential works are Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds and, of course, Rear Window.
70 years ago, the latter mystery thriller, which follows a story of a wheelchair-bound photographer who was spying on his neighbors, became a ground-breaking sensation. Since then, it has inspired a number of movies, and these include the film that is now holding the second place in Netflix’s global chart, even though it was released in 2007.
Its plot revolves around Kale, a 17-year-old sullen boy who ended up under house arrest after assaulting his teacher. There he turns his attention to spying on the neighborhood out of boredom, however, this childish game soon takes quite an unexpected turn.

Looking back at the legendary Queen of Rock and Roll, and Grammy winner Tina Turner’s career, we can certainly agree that the late icon not only dominated the music industry but also portrayed her versatility in a few critically acclaimed projects. However, despite her serious acting aspirations, Turner felt limited by opportunities for Black women as well as the type of roles she was being offered.

Joan Vassos is getting another shot at love.
The 61-year-old school administrator has been cast as the inaugural Golden Bachelorette, ABC announced Tuesday during Disney’s Upfront presentation.
Vassos was an early frontrunner during Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor. She unfortunately had to voluntarily leave the show during Week 3 due to a family emergency. During the Women Tell All, Vassos admitted that she felt there was some unfinished business between her and Turner. At times, she said it was hard not to wonder what may have happened if she’d stayed.
ABC also announced that The Golden Bachelorette, which debuts this fall, will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Et/Pt before new episodes of Abbott Elementary.

Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist are officially getting divorced. The first-ever golden couple made it just three months into their marriage before they decided they were not right for each other. There have been plenty of instances where a The Bachelor or The Bachelorette lead has decided the winner they picked wasn’t right for them.
