Saturday Am Writethru: After a poor Memorial Day weekend, we have a poor post-holiday period with all titles grossing an estimated $68.6M, -66% from a year ago when Sony proved superhero movies weren’t dead with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse contributing to a marketplace that grossed $205.1M. Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie, as expected, is showing his teeth against Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a second-weekend faceoff between the two, $13M to $11.5M.
Garfield took in $3.7M at 4,018 theaters yesterday, while Furiosa made $3.05M at 3,864. Garfield‘s Weekend 2 hold is a great -45% off the 3-day, while Furiosa isn’t shabby at -56%. By Sunday, Garfield‘s running total will stand at $50.5M, while Furiosa will be at $50.4M.
Paramount’s If in Weekend 3 is hoping that matinees push Furiosa out of second, that movie having posted $2.86M yesterday at 3,783 theaters for a 3-day of $11M,...

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. Not that stateside will make or break “Haikyu!!,” which released in its native Japan back in February and stands as the second-highest...

As expected, The Garfield Movie seems to be squeezing out a victory opposite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the weekend box office. Both films are in their second week of release, and Deadline has Garfield making about $12 million this weekend compared to $11.3 for Furiosa. To note, this margin is pretty slim, so the numbers could easily swing the other way by the time the final figures come in tomorrow afternoon. The Garfield Movie is looking at a roughly 53% week 2 drop, while Furiosa is in the 57% range.
To be sure, those are steeper drops than we anticipated in our box office predictions earlier this week. I expected Garfield to claw its way to the top spot, but I thought decent word-of-mouth would allow both films stronger holds. Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case. While the makers of The Garfield Movie are probably thrilled with these numbers, as...

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth starrer Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opened last week to great reviews. The film had decent anticipation among audiences, following the massive cult following of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which was a big awards contender. However, the film has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Anya Taylor-Joy plays the titular role in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | Warner Bros Pictures
The film is not performing well at the box office despite the impeccable filmmaking and zany qualities that George Miller’s Mad Max films have been known for. Amidst the controversy around the use of AI and the fear of it taking over people’s jobs, the film made creative use of the tool to enhance the film rather than manipulate audiences into believing something it’s not.

One weird thing that happens with long-running franchises is that they eventually reach a point where the creatives leading the new movies grew up as fans of the old ones. Sometimes this is a bad thing — it arguably leads to an increase in lazy fan-service at the expense of any bold, innovative creative decisions — but other times it just makes the whole thing feel even more exciting. To know that the new people in charge truly care about the lore can go a long way in keeping viewers on board.
Even outside the writing and the directing department, it's fun when the actors involved love the series, as was the case with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" star Anya Taylor-Joy. Although it doesn't sound like she's a die-hard fan of the original "Mad Max" films from the '70s and '80s, she does clearly have a ton of respect for "Mad Max: Fury Road,...

When it comes to epic new character challenges for Chris Hemsworth, the question isn’t “Can he do it?” The question is “Does he have it in him… to make it epic?”
From “The Avengers” and “Blackhat” to more Avengers and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Hemsworth has been chewing through action roles since he was first cast as Captain Kirk’s dad in the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot that launched a thousand IMDb pages. He’s known across the world and throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor: an ancient god dedicated to protecting Earth and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” IP with a heart of gold and a hammer the size of Rocket Raccoon. Sometimes he’s brave. Sometimes he’s goofy. And shaggy or shaven, the man sure can make a cape and eyepatch sexy.

Composer Tom Holkenborg looked at his sonic palette for “Mad Max: Fury Road” as a massive rock opera. For the prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” he thought it needed a sonic shift.
Holkenborg, also known professionally as Junkie Xl, lit up a cigarette as he joined Variety from his Amsterdam home and studio to discuss his vision. “The music is commenting on how Furiosa sees the Wastelands and what is happening to her,” he explained. Not only did Holkenborg want the music to feel like a first-person perspective score, he wanted things to be more restrained.
He noted the lack of music for the first six minutes of the film as one example of holding back.
“Furiosa” follows the eponymous heroine, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who is kidnapped by Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus, a new villain. Dementus and his biker bandits take her across the Wasteland in his quest for dominance.

Last year, a bidding war was going down between Netflix and Amazon for a lucrative package deal. The two streaming giants were in a fight to acquire the film rights to the novella by Don Winslow called Crime 101. The package deal had included two attached stars — Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. Although, Pascal has now reportedly been replaced by Mark Ruffalo. It also has a director set to helm the project with Bart Layton, whose credits include the documentary The Imposter from 2012 and American Animals from 2018. Amazon had come out as the victor and according to Deadline, Saltburn and Masters of the Air star Barry Keoghan will now join the heist film.
Crime 101 is said to be a crime drama in the vein of Michael Mann’s Heat. The plot of the film has yet to be released; however, Deadline’s summary of the novel reads that “the...

George Miller is one of the most fantastic storytellers in the entertainment industry, credited with having birthed critically acclaimed projects that range from the comedy/musical Happy Feet to the horror/action Dead Calm.
While he has left fans in the fantasy world through films like Babe, he has also managed to unsettle his audiences through a saga as remarkable as his Mad Max one.

Talking about that, this specific action/adventure universe of his that never ceases to leave his viewers unsettled has not only been in his mind for a long time but has also ascended from themes of his own past.
If anything, the things seen in his lore are widely synonymous with what Miller went through in his past, establishing him as the true legend that many already deem him to be.

Complaints filed: We could fill these very pages with news and analysis about the so-called ‘culture wars’ almost every week, but the past seven days has been ripe with incident. When Karla Sofia Gascón (pictured) became the first transgender actress to win the Cannes Best Actress prize for Jacques Audiard’s gangster musical Emilia Perez last weekend she would have felt only joy, but that joy swiftly turned sour after French far-right politician Marion Maréchal-Le Pen responded to the win on X with: “So a man has won the Best Actress prize… progress for the left is the erasure of women and mothers.” Palms could be heard hitting faces across the land.

It will be a real shame if George Miller doesn’t get to make his mooted follow-up, The Wasteland, because of the low takings of such a creatively ambitious and oddball film as Furiosa
The film industry is obsessed with box office figures. The Tinseltown trades spend far more time focusing on whichever recent blockbuster has lost $200m than they do on the movies that pick up critical plaudits. There is a constant sense that, with such huge budgets flying around in the era of Avatar: The Way of Water and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny that the entire financial Hollywood house of cards could be about to come crashing down faster than one can mutter “massive CGI mega-budget” under one’s breath.

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But nine years have passed, the Fury Road prequel Furiosa is now in theatres,...

Chris Hemsworth is set to return to the Transformers franchise, and he’s also in talks to appear in a GI Joe crossover film.
Currently enjoying strong reviews for his performance in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, still in cinemas, Chris Hemsworth could be about to join yet another huge franchise – well, two in fact.
Deadline reports that Hemsworth is in negotiations to star in a planned Transformers/GI Joe crossover film that will bring two of Hasbro’s biggest toy lines (and two of Paramount’s biggest action franchises) together. It’s a project that was teased in 2023’s Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts and was then officially confirmed last month.
There’s a couple of ways to look at this: more cynical types might argue that the last few years has seen both franchises facing waning interest, so to Hasbro and Paramount, sticking them together is an attempt...

A long-anticipated prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy-led Furiosa premiered last Friday, on May 24, 2024. Chris Hemsworth is doubling down on Transformers. The actor is in talks to lead an untitled crossover film for Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment that unites the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
This marks a second Transformers project for Hemsworth, who voice stars in the upcoming Transformers One animated movie, which arrives in theaters Sept. 20.
The proposed film follows the events of last year’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which ended with Anthony Ramos’ Noah Diaz getting a job offer from the Joes. Upon finalizing the deal, this will put the Melrose Ave. lot back in business with Hemsworth who is already starring in Paramount Animation/Hasbro’s Transformers One which hits theaters on Sept. 20, 2024. That movie was one of the highest-testing Paramount Animation titles ever.

Last weekend saw one of the closest box office battles of the summer, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only narrowly inching out a victory over The Garfield Movie (by less than a million bucks). With very little in the way of competition this weekend, the orange, animated feline is set to overtake Miller’s post-apocalyptic actioner, thanks mainly to weekend family matinees.
Given how mediocre Furiosa’s box office start was (with many predicting it killed the chance of us ever getting Mad Max: The Wasteland), all eyes will be on the film’s hold this weekend. Given the reviews and word of mouth, I predict a 40% decline, which would put it in the $16-17 million range. To note, during its run, Mad Max: Fury Road never posted a drop over 50% until late in its run. Hopefully, word of mouth means the film will have a decent enough finish at the box office,...

Even though the new installment of the Mad Max Saga, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa, seems to be a box office disappointment, it still received glowing praise from both critics and the audience. Alongside the strong viewership of Prime Video’s Fallout series, this fact proves people’s large interest in crazy post-apocalyptic stories.

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.

The transition from good to evil has fascinated writers for centuries. Forcing characters to dance on the line of morality has always intrigued audiences more than two-dimensional characters with simple moral compasses. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well-known for administering such dilemmas to their viewers through the characters they make.

Be it Kilmonger in Black Panther, Thanos’ noble motivations to wipe out half the universe, or the execution of the Punisher’s justice, it is difficult for fans to condemn some villains when their motivations are so complex. Despite this, there are a few characters that have stayed consistent over the years, even though the law would disagree.
Five of the main six Avengers have managed to always have a strong moral compass, ever since the 2011 film, and these traits have stayed consistent. However, it would seem that their actors have played parts that juxtapose their iconic roles.

We have reported that George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win the Memorial Day weekend box office ahead of The Garfield Movie, but that the overall results were disappointing and that the whole weekend was the worst in 30 years, as far as the box office is concerned. While everyone is praising Furiosa, and we know that the studio is proud of the project, it hasn’t drawn a lot of people to cinemas, and some are afraid that Furiosa‘s result at the box office might influence the future of the Mad Max franchise in a negative way.
As we know, and Miller himself has talked about this, there are ideas for more movies and we know that the story for Mad Max: The Wasteland has already been written, but whether the movie will ever be made might depend on how much money Furiosa earns in its theatrical run,...

Nine years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road and nearly 45 years after his original Mad Max movie debut, George Miller brought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact that Furiosa would be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

Theatrical exclusivity is holding steady: In the first four months of 2024, it was around 30 days before PVOD — same as last year. However, as we track the theatrical, PVOD, and streaming lifecycles we’re seeing a new trend: The gap between theaters and streamers is shrinking.
Already, we’re seeing first-quarter theatrical releases like Sony’s “Anyone But You” on Netflix or “Dune 2” on Max. For the first two months of 2024, the average gap between the theatrical opening day and the streamers’ debuts was just 68 days. For the same period in 2023, it was 90 days.
Every wide release from the first four months of 2024 is now available for home viewing (or will be soon). The 30-day average between theatrical and PVOD debuts now appears to be a norm, and any stability is welcome in an uncertain industry. However, the accelerating move to streaming is bad news for theaters.
Faster streaming means another theatrical disincentive.

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, has not been performing very well in theaters since it went on release last Friday, and unless there's a drastic improvement in box office takings, this could spell doom for the legendary filmmaker's plans for a follow-up.
Furiosa took in a disappointing $35 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend, and amassed an only slightly better $40 million overseas for a running global total of $75 million.
The movie opens in Greece and Japan this week, before releasing in China on June 7.
It is worth noting that Fury Road was by no means a box office smash, either, but the movie's popularity and Academy Awards attention is believed to have factored into Warner Bros.' decision to greenlight Miller's prequel - and they may not be quite so quick to do the same if Furiosa doesn't get a high-octane boost of box...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga witnessed an underwhelming opening weekend during Memorial Day, despite its hype and the fantastic cast assembled for the film. Connected to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road as a prequel, George Miller’s latest installment had initially anticipated big box office numbers. However, Furiosa’s path to Valhalla was unfortunately tarnished.

The weak first-weekend performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is concerningly indicative of larger issues with the Hollywood box office. Note that the latest flick, under the direction of George Miller, is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Sure, the stellar cast that it brought together made the movie one of the most anticipated of the year, especially in the film enthusiast community.
Thus, one can’t help but wonder: What magic could Charlize Theron have woven had she returned as the indomitable Furiosa in Miller’s ambitious saga? Sadly, her absence in the anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is obvious.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die has received clearance to roll into China. The Sony Pictures film will hit Chinese cinemas on June 22, according to both the studio and local press reports in Beijing. The film opens theatrically in North America on June 7.
The new film is the fourth installment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys for Life (2020), which revived the movie series after a 17-year hiatus and was a worldwide hit with $426 million in total ticket revenue. Bad Boys for Life earned just $3 million in China, but it was released there amid the challenges of the pandemic.
Bad Boys 4 is helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who infamously had their $90 million Batgirl feature for Max shelved for a tax break by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly beat The Garfield Movie by less than $1 million over the Memorial Day box office weekend, making it clear the film isn’t quite the blockbuster Warner Bros. was hoping it would be. But what does this mean for the next Mad Max movie?
Unfortunately, the news isn’t good, at least for now. A report from THR states that Furiosa‘s disappointing $32 million domestic take is “diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland.” Director George Miller had previously acknowledged that the possibility of more Mad Max movies was linked to how well Furiosa performed but added that he wasn’t even going to think about it until after the movie was released.

It’s not all doom and gloom at the global box office as a handful of films reached milestones this week. 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has topped $300M worldwide, while Paramount’s If and Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie crossed the $100M mark.

Nearly halfway through 2024 and it's crystal clear that we're staring down the barrel of a bad year at the box office that the industry can ill-afford. 2023 had just started to make it seem like there was some light at the end of the tunnel, with domestic ticket sales topping $9 billion. Unfortunately, the SAG and WGA strikes last year messed up the release calendar for 2024 and now, theaters are suffering once again. Now, Regal Cinemas and regional chain Harkins Theatres are rolling out a summer program that might help -- and it involves $1 movie tickets.
Regal is kicking off its Summer Movie Express at over 400 locations beginning June 11. Meanwhile, Harkins will roll out its Summer Movie Fun beginning June 3. In both cases, the chains are screening a selection of family-friendly movies aimed at kids from recent years, including "Trolls Band Together," "Sonic the Hedgehog," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

At the time of writing this, Sony has just announced the PlayStation State of Play for May 2024. With the summer showcase season, just around the corner, it will be interesting to see how Sony lays out their upcoming slate for the next few years.
Add to that the fact that this is Sony’s time to really shine and show everyone why PlayStation is king. With Xbox failing to deliver the goods as of late, and a lack of first party PS5 titles confirmed, now seems like the perfect time for the PlayStation State of Play to drop.
So below, each member of the FandomWire Gaming team has made a prediction for what they expect to see during the event respectively. I will list these below followed by a bit of commentary on how likely I believe each prediction is:

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

While we are still some time away from a Metal Gear Solid Movie, it hasn’t dampened the spirits of fans who are still eager to see the popular franchise adapted to the big screen. With the recent release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, there has been talk of Director George Miller wanting Hideo Kojima to take on the game for this title.
Kojima is an innovative thinker and the Metal Gear franchise is regarded by many as his crowning glory. First released in 1998 for the PlayStation 1, it saw huge acclaim and numerous awards. The action-adventure stealth perspective of the game drew a legion of fans who have followed the franchise through its various sequels.

While it made $65 million dollars worldwide in its global opening, it’s fair to say that the domestic opening for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” at $32 million, was underwhelming and, worrisomely, might be the end of the ‘Mad Max’ franchise. Then again, “Mad Max: Fury Road” never opened up substantially higher, only earning $45 million in its early May debut in 2015.

May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.
The one movie that has the best chance at cracking the Top 5 would probably be Crunchyroll’s latest Anime feature “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,...
