Hold on to your butts, Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone are re-teaming for the new movie Checkmate, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It’s an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s upcoming non-fiction book of the same name, which dives into a 2022 scandal that rocked the chess world.
Fielder and Stone last blew our minds with The Curse, a black comedy at Showtime. This time around Fielder is set to direct while Stone’s Fruit Tree banner will produce. The whole project will be led by A24, which blew away offers from much larger studios with a reported seven-figure guarantee. “I’ve never seen A24 do that before,” THR quotes one insider saying. And what could make A24 this excited?

Back in 2022, world champion chess player Magnus Carlsen quit the Sinquefield Cup pro tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, after a surprising loss to a 19-year-old, Hans Niemann. What started as a speculative drama about why Carlsen quit or how Niemann won in the first place quickly spiraled into accusations of cheating, an unsuccessful legal battle, and what’s considered to be the biggest scandal in chess history. Now, that story is receiving the film treatment at A24.
Emma Stone will produce the cheating scandal film alongside Dave McCary, her husband and production partner.

After more than proving his directing mettle with Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder entered another echelon with The Curse, helming seven episodes (including the mind-bending finale). Now, the comedian, actor, writer, and director has notched another step in his filmmaking ascendancy with the announcement of his feature directorial debut.
THR reports he’ll reteam with The Curse star and producer Emma Stone and her company Fruit Tree for Checkmate, which A24 has picked up. With Fielder on board to direct and Stone on as producer, the film is an adaptation from a forthcoming book by Ben Mezrich, whose works have been adapted into The Social Network and Dumb Money.
Picked up on a 12-page proposal from Mezrich ahead of the full book, the story spotlights “the biggest scandal in the history of chess, focusing on the generational battle between Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and the young bad boy of chess,...

Emma Stone knows to stick with what is working as she follows up her 2023 projects (which have garnered significant attention) with more from the same collaborators. Stone recently won an Academy Award for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Lanthimos would also already release a trailer for his next film, Kinds of Kindness, earlier this year and Stone is among the principal cast. Other than Poor Things, last year, Stone would star in a limited series for Showtime with comedic actor Nathan Fielder in a surreal dark comedy called The Curse, which would also feature a collaboration with Benny Safdie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stone will also be reuniting with Fielder for another project with A24. The indie studio that features a bevy of off-beat films has recently had its biggest title with Civil War, and the company played its moves aggressively to beat out bigger studios for Checkmate.

Following the success of The Curse, Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are again teaming with A24 to produce Checkmate, a movie based on the chess world’s biggest scandal.
Chess can be absorbing subject material for drama, whether it’s a glossy period piece such as Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, or more left-field takes like 2013’s Computer Chess. Perhaps chess movies are like Robin Hood projects: there are always several in development in Hollywood and it becomes a strategic game of, well… erm, chess to see who can put one together first.
The latest chess project is being produced by Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, and A24 have reportedly spent a seven-figure sum to secure the rights to it. Why the buzz? Well, the film will be based on the biggest scandal the chess world has seen in recent years, dramatising the events of the ‘controversial 2022 head-to-head match between Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen,...

A24, operating on its new mandate to act aggressively in the pursuit of projects, just outplayed the Hollywood studios and streamers in order to pick up Checkmate, a hot feature package centered on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, the author whose books were adapted into films such The Social Network and Dumb Money.
If deals close, Checkmate will reteam Emma Stone with Nathan Fielder, who both adorned the most recent edition of The Hollywood Reporter magazine and the stars of the Showtime series The Curse. Fielder is attached to direct, while Stone will produce along with her husband and partner Dave McCary via the duo’s Fruit Tree banner. It also reunites the pair with A24, which backed The Curse. Hans Niemann, 20, a chess grandmaster, has repeatedly denied the claim that he cheats in over-the-board chess.
In a conversation on Piers Morgan Uncensored, he addressed the specific claims that he cheated with vibrating sex toys. These allegations emerged on social media, although it is unclear the original source of the accusations.
When pressed as to whether he had used such toys as he played, Neumann replied, “Well, your curiosity is a bit concerning, you know – maybe you’re personally interested, but I can tell you, no. Categorically, no, of course not.”
In the 2022 at Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, Neimann beat five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen.
In the days that followed his victory, The New York Times reported that Neimann had stated, “They want me to strip fully naked, I’ll do it. I don’t care, because I know that I’m clean. You want me to play in...

A lawsuit against the Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and Chess.com has been dismissed by a Missouri federal court in a $100 million defamation lawsuit.
Hans Niemann, a U.S. chess prodigy, accused Carlsen, Chess.com’s chief officer Daniel Rensch and Hikaru Nakamura of collusion and defamation.
The U.S. District Court Judge Audrey Fleissig dismissed the claims Niemann made that the defendants were, “egregiously defaming him and unlawfully colluding to blacklist him from the profession to which he has dedicated his life.”
In addition to this, Niemann sued for slander and libel, which Fleissig also rejected, but without prejudice. This means that Niemann is permitted to file a separate suit to sue the defendants on those allegations, but Niemann has not confirmed if he plans on doing this.

Chess grandmaster Hans Niemann, 19, is suing Norwegian chess champ Magnus Carlsen, as well as the American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and the chief officer of Chess.com Daniel Rensch, for defamation over accusing him of cheating in chess matches.
Carlsen has publicly accused Niemann of cheating after Niemann beat him at the Sinquefield tournament in Missouri on September 4. Carlsen infamously resigned from a match with Niemann after playing only one move weeks after the loss, then brought the cheating accusations following that.
The lawsuit is attempting to characterize Carlsen as vindictive against Niemann after his first defeat. The suit said that Carlsen was “Enraged that the young Niemann, 12 years his junior, dared to disrespect the ‘King of Chess,’ and fearful that the young prodigy would further blemish his multi-million dollar brand by beating him again.”

Chess player Hans Niemann, who has been accused of cheating in online games, and of a bizarre unverified rumor that he used vibrating anal beads to beat Magnus Carlsen recently, clearly got a little extra attention to be able to compete at the U.S. Chess Championship in St. Louis.
A video of some of the chess players entering the tournament made the rounds, because Niemann was asked to turn around for a full body scan while the two people before him were not.
Niemann has responded to these accusations saying that he has only cheated on two occasions in online games when he was 12 and 16, but a Chess.com report alleged that he may have received assistance in more than 100 online games. It was inconclusive as to whether Niemann cheated in over-the-board games, however.
This began when Carlsen abruptly dropped out of the Sinquefield Cup tournament after being beaten by Niemann.

It’s been a month since reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup tournament after a shocking loss to 19-year-old grandmaster Hans Niemann, hinting in the announcement of his exit that he believed his opponent may have cheated. The scandal has only intensified since, leading to a massive reckoning over the state of unfair play — and especially how it is detected and disciplined — at the top level of professional chess.
Following revelations last week that Niemann’s coach, Maxim Dlugy, was twice temporarily banned by Chess.

Chennai, Sep 23 (Ians) International Chess Federation (Fide) President Arkady Dvorkovich on Friday said World Champion Grandmaster (Gm) Magnus Carlsen’s recent actions impact the reputation of his colleagues, sportive results, and eventually, damages the game.
Dvorkovich’s statement was with reference to two games involving Calsen and Gm Hans Niemann.
In their latest encounter at the Julius Baer Generation Cup, an online competition, Carlsen resigned without making his second move. Earlier at the Sinquefield Cup tournament, Carlsen, after losing to Niemann, withdrew from the event without giving out any reason.
However insinuations were there that Carlsen withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup in protest against Niemann’s cheating.
“Fide is prepared to task its Fair Play commission with a thorough investigation of the incident, when the adequate initial proof is provided, and all parties involved disclose the information at their disposal. We are fully aware that, in some cases, uncertainty can harm players’ performance.

New York, Sep 20 (Ians) Magnus Carlsen courted controversy in the Julius Baer Generation Cup — the seventh leg of the USD1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour — on Monday as he sensationally quit his game with American star Hans Niemann after playing just one move.
The world champion caused a wave of shock when he pulled out of a match for the second time in two weeks, seemingly in protest at alleged cheating.

Following a rocky day at the board in which he only picked up one more point, the US teenager stands two points behind Carlsen and is still in with a chance of making the knockouts.

Miami, Aug 18 (Ians) Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa earned a hard-fought win in the third round as the Indian star and World No 1 Magnus Carlsen remained are neck-and-neck on a perfect 9/9 score after both won their matches in the Ftx Crypto Cup.
Pragg, bidding for his first Meltwater Champions Chess Tour title, wasn’t at his best against an aggressive opponent in Hans Niemann but still ground out 3 points with a final game win on Wednesday.
Niemann had shown he meant business as he got off to a winning start against the 17-year-old joint-leader.
But Pragg struck back with a game Grandmaster Peter Leko called a “fantastic positional masterpiece”. Niemann, as he did on Tuesday day against Carlsen, surrendered a hard-fought lead immediately, the organisers if the event Play Magnus Group informed in a release.

Miami, Aug 17 (Ians) India’s chess star Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and world champion Magnus Carlsen made it two wins out of two as the Ftx Crypto Cup favourites powered into an early lead.
On Tuesday night, Praggnanandhaa narrowly beat Anish Giri in the four-game match to avenge a costly defeat the Dutch number 1 inflicted on him earlier this year in the Oslo Esports Cup. Pragg and Giri played out three draws before the India struck in the final game.
The youngster sits alongside Carlsen at the top of the leaderboard on 6/6 points. On Wednesday, Praggnanandhaa will play American teenager Hans Niemann, while Giri, still yet to get off the mark, will face French-registered Alireza Firouzja.
World champion Carlsen recovered from a shock loss against Niemann to march into Round 3 of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour round-robin. Carlsen’s day started badly as he was blown away by Niemann, the lowest rated player in the tournament.
