After being rescheduled from its original September date — postponed due to the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War — the 2023 Academy Museum Gala took place Dec. 3 in Los Angeles. Stars including Natalie Portman, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez walked the red and pink carpet that ran from the entrance and led underneath the museum’s Sphere building. Many of the stars making an appearance have films that are looking to be top contenders in the Oscar race; the benefit has become, for many, a must-do pit stop along the awards circuit.
The evening — the third annual benefit for the movie museum, where current exhibits spotlight the works of director John Waters and Lourdes Portillo as well as the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood — honored four luminaries of the entertainment industry: Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola.

Updated with rescheduled date: The Academy Museum Gala, which had been postponed last month in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel, has been rescheduled for December 3.
The annual fundraiser, which this year will bestow honors on Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola, was originally scheduled for October 28. After the attack on Israel, gala organizers first canceled the pre-event red carpet then eventually postponed the entire event “out of respect for the devastating conflict and loss of life happening overseas,” they said at the time.
The event is now moving forward with the now-escalated Israel-Hamas war top of mind, we hear.
The gala aims to raise funds to support museum exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming including screenings, K-12 programs, and access initiatives in service of the general public and the Los Angeles community.
THR first reported the news of the new date.

The Los Angeles Armenian American community is ramping up its public concerns over an international regional conflict between ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijan.
Last week, a protest blocked the southbound 101 in downtown Los Angeles after Azerbaijan resumed military attacks on an enclave where roughly 120,000 ethnic Armenians live. Thousands have fled their homes, according to Human Rights Watch, which added that most cannot flee because Azerbaijan had sealed the border.
The enclave in dispute is known as Nagorno Karabakh. Azerbaijan has laid claim to the land, which is at the heart of the dispute.
The recent escalation has raised concerns from several prominent Armenian voices from the entertainment community.
For Grammy Award winning Serj Tankian and Cher, and TV star Kim Kardashian, a crisis in a little-known region is not just a humanitarian disaster in a faraway land.

George and Amal Clooney spotlighted justice defenders on Thursday night at the inaugural Albie Awards in New York City.
“Growing up, my whole life, it just felt like oftentimes governments fail us,” George told reporters outside of the New York Public Library. “We need to, all of us, be diligent and fight for it — and that’s why we’re here tonight — because we have people who are risking their lives to do it, and risking their freedom willingly, which a lot of people aren’t.”
The married couple formed the Albie Awards to honor individuals who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to justice. Many celebrity guests walked the red carpet including Oscar Isaac, Dua Lipa, John Oliver, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Ethan Hawke and Meryl Streep.
Speaking on the red carpet, Alfre Woodward dismissed the idea that actors shouldn’t be vocal about humanitarian issues.

On Easter Sunday 2018, Nikol Pashinyan strapped on a backpack and launched “My Step,” a 120-mile walk across Armenia to protest the country’s ruling party. It inspired a non-violent movement that in less than two months, saw the country’s prime minister resign and Pashinyan elevated to the office. Filmmaker Garin Hovannisian was there with Pashinyan from the beginning and chronicled the wild events for his documentary “I Am Not Alone.”
Hovannisian’s film captures the entirety of what came to be known as the “Velvet Revolution” in Armenia, beginning with Pashinyan embarking on a 14-day protest march, and ending with the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan. Now his moving, cinema veríte film is making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, and TheWrap has the exclusive first trailer.

Deadline’s annual film revenue tournaments have celebrated the triumphs of each year’s most profitable films. This year, we decided to look at the films on the opposite end of the spectrum. The big budget misfires that bled red ink and reminded everyone from the artists to the executives and studio executives that big swings don’t always clear the fences. These included passion projects, a blatant play for the movie going audience in China, while others were flat-out misfires. Some in the latter category included Justice League, The Mummy, Valerian and Blade Runner 2049. But guess what? They didn’t crack the Top Five. Here are the movies our experts said posted the worst losses.

The Armenian Genocide, also known as the Armenian Holocaust, was the Ottoman (now Turkey) government’s systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians, mostly Ottoman citizens within the Ottoman Empire and its successor state, the Republic of Turkey.
Christian Bale
The starting date is conventionally held to be 24 April 1915, the day that Ottoman authorities rounded up, arrested, and deported 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders from Constantinople to the region of Ankara, the majority of whom were eventually murdered. The genocide was carried out during and after World War I.
