- Two French Foreign Legionnaires are lost amid the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert when they stumble across the entrance to an underground world. Searching this new found subterranean passage, our heroes are surprised to find the lost city of Atlantis. Ruling over this fantastic underworld realm, an evil queen sets her sights upon these strangers to her kingdom.
- Between swing and blues musical numbers, the story of comedian Lem Anderson, whose long-awaited chance to act dramatically vanishes when he witnesses a mob killing and is forced to leave town. Lem becomes a wanderer, then an alcoholic. Finally a chance to play Othello draws him back to Harlem. Is it too late for Ned? Or too soon to suit Rough Jackson's mobsters? Melodramatic events lead to an unusual conclusion.
- After noted violinist Arthur Williams suffers a hand injury which ends his playing career, his hopes are transferred to his son, who prefers swing music to classical.
- Tommy McCoy and "Dude" Markey are both in love with Harlem singer/dancer Nita. Markey robs a jewelry store and turns the loot over to gang-boss Murray Howard. Later, Markey robs the safe, steals the jewelry, and, in order to get rid of his rival for Nita, frames the robbery on McCoy. The latter's big-brother thinks otherwise and, with Nita's help, sets out to prove it.
- In and around some great blues, swing and jazz music, a very unpopular band-leader. Prince Ellis, is killed in a Harlem nightclub, and, in and around some more great music, a detective finds the lists of suspects is very long, as Prince Ellis was indeed very unpopular with many citizens.
- In late nineteenth century Alfred Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish heritage, is falsely accused of espionage. Found guilty of treason he is drummed out of the army and sent to prison on Devil's Island.
- Dramatic events in a Harlem apartment house center around Pa Wilkins, chosen by the Better Business League to replace their ousted, crooked leader Marshall...who wants revenge.
- A written foreword introduces this documentary, which traces the history of motion pictures from the 1890s through the early 1920s. After a master-of-ceremonies announces the sequences that will follow, clips of early motion pictures are shown. Included in the clips are newsreels of the inaugurations of Presidents William McKinley, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson. Next follows a traditional melodrama called The Fatal Glass of Beer . Then, pictures of the 1906 Joe Gans--Battling Nelson boxing match are shown, followed by portions of a French romantic drama. The film ends with shots of film stars of the 1910s and 1920s, including Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, William S. Hart and Rudolph Valentino. Valentino is shown off-screen, as well as in a clip from his 1921 film The Sheik (1921) . During the course of the documentary, several old songs are included as "community sing" projects, including "Sweet Adeline," and "My Gal Sal."
