Doch eine Schule auf den Aran Islands - einer Inselgruppe knapp 50 Kilometer vor der irischen Westküste - will das verhindern. Hier können junge Iren Irisch lernen. Die 12-jährige Saoirse Coughlan stammt ursprünglich aus Dublin. Der Teenager hat sich dazu entschieden, für mindestens ein Jahr auf die Aran Islands zu ziehen, um dort die irische Sprache und Kultur zu lernen. Das Leben auf der 160-Einwohner-Insel Inis Meáin, der mittleren der Aran Islands, ist eine Herausforderung für das Mädchen. Die trubelige Großstadt Dublin mit allerlei Freizeitvergnügen ist hier weit weg. Reetgedeckte Cottages und uralte Steinmauern prägen die raue Landschaft der Aran Islands. Wegen ihrer abgeschiedenen Lage konnte sich die irische Sprache und Kultur hier besonders lange erhalten. Rund 40 Schüler besuchen derzeit die Coláiste Naomh Eoin Schule, die eine Hälfte sind Einheimische, die andere stammt vom Festland - so wie Saoirse Coughlan. An der Schule wird ausschließlich irisches Gälisch gesprochen, in allen Fächern. Das ist einzigartig in Irland. "Re:" begleitet die Teenagerin in ihrem neuen Alltag. Wie nimmt sie das einsame Leben auf der Insel wahr? Was fasziniert sie an der irischen Sprache und Kultur, dass sie ihr vertrautes Leben in Dublin zurückgelassen hat?
