- DirectorPeter WebberStarsScarlett JohanssonColin FirthTom WilkinsonA young peasant maid working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer becomes his talented assistant and the model for one of his most famous works.Date set: 1665 (roughly dated)
This is an interesting film, based loosely the life of Dutch painter Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer. Please note this is not entirely historically accurate, no one knows how or when the masterpiece was created, but author Tracy Chevalier had a fair go at it. True the pacing is a bit slow for some, but other, like myself, would enjoy the slowness as the story unfolds. Scarlett Johansson is an interesting choice as the maid in the Vermeer household, but well casted. - DirectorNicholas HytnerStarsDaniel Day-LewisWinona RyderPaul ScofieldA Salem resident attempts to frame her ex-lover's wife for being a witch in the middle of the 1692 witchcraft trials.Date set:1692
This film is based on a play by Arthur Miller "The Crucible", which revolves around the Salem witchcraft trails of 1692 in the small township of Salem Massachusetts. Winona Ryder playes a scorned and complexed woman, is spurred by the rejection of her married lover Daniel Day Lewis. Her actions, almost psycotic at times, is taken beyond the extreme where the lives of the innocents are callously taken for granted. Remember this is a time where anything could be miscontrued as witchcraft and conversing with the devil. Understandably, but nevertheless noticably is the use of modern tongue being spoken, this is all forgiven by the solid performance by the leading cast of Ryder, Day Lewis and Joan Allen. - DirectorBruce BeresfordStarsLothaire BluteauAden YoungSandrine HoltIn the 17th century, a Jesuit missionary nicknamed Black Robe by the natives and his small party of companions try reaching the Huron tribe in Canada all while facing mistrust, Iroquois warring parties and harsh winter conditions.

Can the twin be substituted for the real king? It's so obvoius the hair for Leonardo is extensions. And not too well hidden. - DirectorMichael Caton-JonesStarsLiam NeesonJessica LangeJohn HurtIn 1713 Scotland, Rob Roy MacGregor is wronged by a nobleman and his nephew, becomes an outlaw in search of revenge while fleeing the Redcoats, and faces charges of being a Jacobite.Date set: 1713
Brian Cox villanous character is to be applauded, this man knows how to play a villan and play it good. The same goes to Tim Roth character Archibald Cunningham. The plot is simple the lowly noble cattle breeder/farmer sells cattle to leecherously aristrocat. Noble farmer goes a rampage for justice, evil lord gets is just desserts in the end. 3 things stand out here. (1) the music: echoing a scotlish influence (2) the scenery: love the cinematography, the open fields of the Scotish landscape (3) the acting: long time that I've seen Jessica Lange act a decent part. And Liam Nelson is wonderful too. ***SPOILER***the final scene of sword fight is exquisitely choreographed. I liked the difference between the 2 swords, one a broad sword, the other a rapier. Best sword fight since "The Princess Bride". ” - eliza_gaskell - DirectorSyd MacartneyStarsPatrick StewartNeve CampbellJoan SimsWhen an American family moves into a haunted mansion in England, the family's teenage daughter could be the key in fulfilling a prophecy and finally set the house's ghost free.

- DirectorGérard CorbiauStarsBenoît MagimelBoris TerralTchéky KaryoCorbiau repeats the Farinelli formula, artistic rivalry and social private drama expressed in dazzling, sometimes excessively lavish baroque scenery, music and costume, but this time in its ultimate setting: Versailles. There are two protagonists - first the title character, Louis XIV, the French sun-king who has two passions, establishing absolute rule over the realm -after decades of religious/civil wars- by divine right and artistic brilliancy as a dancer (like Nero wrote and performed musical poetry), and starts asserting himself against the entourage of his Medici mother, the regent during his minority, by building his palace complex and launching a 'fitting' new, mainly musical display of baroque show. Secondly the musical genius Gianbattista Lulli ('Jean-Baptiste') Lully, a Florentine upstart of unbridled ambition, quickly gains the king's absolute trust, despite the nationalist and aristocratic opposition to a low-born Italian, and thus turns the normally socially humble post of court composer into a 'ministerial portfolio of culture' of Cabinet rank, complete with a monopoly which kills of his artistic rivals in operatic theater. The script also weaves a complex web of court scheming for individual power and social interests, and even a sadistic but accidental murder on a young valet, producing a sensuous and sumptuous drama too complex for this format, ending in a freakish but fatal accident. Louis XIV's mother was Ana de Austria (in French, Anne d' Autriche), the daughter of one of the Hapsburgh Kings of Spain. Maria di Medici (in French, Marie de Médicis) was his grandmother, his father's mother. She was dead before Louis XIV reached the throne. Please correct the reference to "his Medici mother"

- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsColin FarrellQ'orianka KilcherChristopher PlummerThe story of the English exploration of Virginia, and of the changing world and loves of Pocahontas.Date set: 1607-1617
Era-King James I
There are 2 things I like about this production (1) the film is, at last, a decent production/recount of the life of the American Indian princess Pocahontas (2) Q'orianka Kilcher who played the role of Pocahontas. She is a naturally beautiful and talented woman. AND there are 2 things I disliked about the production (1) Pacing:it really lagged in some areas, to the point of numbness (2)Colin Farrell as Captain John Smith. He's not to everyone's taste and I, personally believe casting was wrong in this area. But watch it and make up your own minds
***Trivia***Q'orianka Kilcher was only 14 years old when she accepted the lead role Pocahontas. Which probably is whythere are not sex scenes or kissing scenes in this production, but there is a plenty of longful gazes, touching and caressing. - 1975– 4 eps8.3 (95)TV Mini SeriesStarsMatthias HabichHerbert TiedeChristian QuadfliegThe idyllic life of the simple-minded Simplicius Simplizissimus is destroyed with the outbreak of the Thirty Years War, leading him on an adventurous journey. This one is added to my private list of "must see before death visits me"
