- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home. With the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Ned Beatty. In this finale of the Toy Story series, the toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center as Andy leaves for college. This is a seemingly perfect cartoon, let alone a near perfect movie. This is definitely the best film of the year, in my opinion, be you child or adult. Heartwarming at times and hilarious at others, “Toy Story 3” is the best animated feature film of the last decade.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake. This is the story of the conception of Facebook (need I say more?). This is the film that our social networking generation will be judged upon. Some people even say that this is the “Citizen Kane” of this generation and in this case I agree with some people. Not to mention that it is the leading favorite by many critics for Best Picture of the Year.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. This is director Christopher Nolan’s visual and thought provoking masterpiece about the inter-workings of dreams. Maybe the most complicated and well put together scripts of the year, not to mention that the visuals are nothing short of mind-blowing. Even though the complexity of this film may baffle some people (and turn some off) this will be the film Nolan will be remembered for and could be the Best Picture of the year.
- DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. The movie follows the impromptu ascension to the throne of King George VI of Britain and his struggles with his speech impediment. This is not just another stuffy film about English royalty. This film has such heart and the script is so good, that all one can say about this film is that it is magnificent. Oh, and Colin Firth must be a shoe-in to win a Best Actor award for his portrayal of the King.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsJames FrancoAmber TamblynKate MaraA mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.Starring James Franco. The true story of Aron Ralston, a mountain climber, who becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone. This is clearly the most intellectual film on this list. It is not simply a film about a guy that cuts his arm off, it takes on a sort of “It’s a Wonderful Life” theme and gives it a hard core 2010 feel. This is definitely a film that will make you cringe and be grateful for life and family.
- DirectorWill GluckStarsEmma StoneAmanda BynesPenn BadgleyWhen Olive lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to one of the college boys, a girl overhears their conversation. Soon, her story spreads across the entire school like wildfire.Starring Emma Stone and Amanda Bynes. A clean-cut high school girl uses rumors of her own promiscuity to advance her social and financial standings. This is definitely Emma Stones coming out party. And she comes out with comic authority here! Her command of this role is inspired…oh and the movie is funny too. “Easy A” is the smartest teen comedy since “Mean Girls”.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.Starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. The story of a ballet dancer who wins the lead in “Swan Lake”, but slowly loses her mind as the role envelopes her. If there where an award for the most visually haunting and engaging film of the year, “Black Swan” would win by a landslide. Even though the story in so multi layers that it may confuse and turn some audiences away, the brilliant ballet performances and the gritty directing from Darren Aronofsky is worth the price of admission. In the end “Black Swan” may go down as the greatest dance film of all time.
- DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsNev SchulmanAriel SchulmanHenry JoostYoung filmmakers document their colleague's budding online friendship with a young woman and her family which leads to an unexpected series of discoveries. This is the most creative documentary and in my opinion the most important of the year. Made by amateur filmmakers Ariel Schulam and Henry Joost; they shine a mirror up to the social network society that we live in today. “Catfish” does not hold back in its strong and disturbing message and will have audiences walking away examining their own lives.
- DirectorDavis GuggenheimStarsCharles AdamsJonathan AlterRobert BalfanzAn examination of the current state of education in America today.Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim’s documentary where he takes an exhaustive review of the public education system, following four children and their struggles to get into charter schools via lottery. This film may take some unfair shots at the teachers union, but in doing so asks all the tough questions about the education system that is failing America children today.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsMark WahlbergChristian BaleAmy AdamsBased on the story of Micky Ward, a fledgling boxer who tries to escape the shadow of his more famous but troubled older boxing brother and get his own shot at greatness.Starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. This film looks at the early career of boxer Micky Ward, as he struggles with a failing career and a crack addicted brother. Not the best boxing movie ever made, but the performances by this acting ensemble are the best in any movie I have seen all year. The only reason that this film is in my top 10 is because every performance in it deserves an Academy Award nomination (and I can’t say that about any other film this year).
