- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsLori CardilleTerry AlexanderJoseph PilatoAs the world is overrun by zombies, a group of scientists and military personnel sheltering in an underground bunker in Florida must decide on how they should deal with the undead horde.Day of the Dead is pretty much the perfect zombie movie for me. It has a good story, interesting characters and most important: great zombie make-up and a hell of a lot gore. Further, with Captain Rhodes it has one of the best bad guys ever to be featured in a zombie movie. This movie is great fun.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia MonrealeA young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.I always had a soft spot for The Beyond. It is definitely an interestic take on the whole genre. The mix between art movie and horror works well for me. It features some really eery and stylish moments, complemented by Fabio Frizzis brilliant soundtrack, which I would rank among the five best horror movie scores ever.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsTisa FarrowIan McCullochRichard JohnsonStrangers searching for a young woman's missing father arrive at a tropical island where a doctor desperately seeks the cause and cure of a recent epidemic of the undead.Lucio Fulci the second. While I'm not too much into Fulci as a horror director, I think that The Beyond and Zombi 2 have been outstanding takes on the whole genre. Zombi 2 is less artsy then Beyond, but it is still very stylish. The whole movie has a nice, sweaty carribean atmosphere, once again carried by Fabio Frizzis nice score. Everything seems a bit over the top: from the gore to the incredible shark vs zombie fight, which makes this movie so much more fun to watch.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States. The masterpiece that started it all. It was really ahead of it's time, and has a nice political subnote attached to it. It has some really great drama between the characters, which makes it interesting and keeps it alive. I really cared for the characters, which is rare in zombie movies. Night of the livind Dead is a timeless classic. It's highly stylish, features good acting and gets intensely eery in times.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary. Some might argue that this is not a zombie movie, but that is too much nitpicking for me. 28 Days later... is the best modern take on the zombie movie in my oppinion. It has a good setting, running and very dangerous zombies, a few awesome death scenes and, again, a very likeable main cast. And, like in my favorite zombie movie Day of the Dead, it features a really awesome bad guy. Not to mention the brilliant score by Brian Eno and the stylish action scenes. This is also the movie that I would call the most mainstream on my list (besides Shaun of the Dead of course), and is always good to guide people into the zombie genre.
- DirectorVictor HalperinStarsBela LugosiMadge BellamyJoseph CawthornA young man turns to a witch doctor to lure the woman he loves away from her fiancé, but instead turns her into a zombie slave.Another real classic. White Zombie has a great surreal atmosphere, with some way ahead shots at that time. Bela Lugosi is great as the leader of the cult that reanimates the dead to make them slaves.
- DirectorMichele SoaviStarsRupert EverettFrançois Hadji-LazaroAnna FalchiA cemetery man must kill the dead a second time when they become zombies.A really unique mix between horror, comedy, art and splatter. Rupert Everett does an amazing job as the main character.
- DirectorJaume BalagueróPaco PlazaStarsJonathan D. MellorManuela VelascoÓscar ZafraIn order to ascertain the current situation inside, a supposed medical officer and a GEO team step into the quarantined and ill-fated apartment building.[Rec] was already awesome, but I have a soft spot for the soldier vs zombie/alien/mutant setting. This is one of these hand camera movies, that make your head a little bit shaky, but the camera work is done well here. In certain moments this movie really creeps me out, in others entertains the hell out of me.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.Yes, it is a parody. But it still features enough zombies and gore to make it into my list. The parody part is the most interesting here of course. The comedy is really well written, shot and acted. I really get the feeling that these guys know zombie movies and love them as much as I do.
- DirectorJean RollinStarsMarie-Georges PascalFélix MartenSerge MarquandA young woman discovers that the pesticide being sprayed on vineyards is turning people into killer zombies.Another poetic take on the genre, this time by Jean Rollin. It features some really interesting takes on how humans get punished by nature for their sins. And the revenge part in the end was kinda fun.
