SOUND Björn WieseNot so long ago, Martin was a gifted mathematician with a career and a steady girlfriend. But after a spell in psychiatric care, he is released with no job and no way of supporting himself, labelled as mentally ill. Viktor is a young Ukrainian boy recently orphaned following his mother’s OD. When the two meet, Martin takes Victor under his wing, and fleeing the city, they escape to a forest where they manage to build a hut robust enough to live in. Though not easy, their back-to-nature subsistence life is idyllic by comparison to what they have left behind, and the pair become firm friends. Martin even meets a sympathetic young woman, Lena, who he encourages to live in a more idealistic way. But just as Martin has started to find happiness, harsh reality intervenes. Director Hans Weingartner is best known here for his second film, The Edukators, but his new film is closer to his debut feature, The White Noise (LFF 2000). In common with that film, Hut in the Woods takes a progressive view of mental illness, creating believable and likable characters and telling their story with empathy and an enviable lightness of touch - DirectorRainer KirbergStarsJakob DiehlNatalie KraneChristoph BachDusseldorf at the beginning of the 1970s. [la invisible] Düsseldorf, beginning of the seventies. Hans, a young, introverted student of Beuys, meets Ruth, a young homeless woman living in a park. Fascinated by her, he takes Ruth in and makes her the subject of his video work. When she quickly settles into the artist scene and Hans fears that he’s losing control over her, he locks her up in his workshop. He thinks he can look into her secret in the test tube of art. Art and life become inextricably intertwined.
The feature film The Sleeping Girl by artist and author-director Rainer Kirberg tells its boy-meets-girl story completely through the camera of the art student Hans. This provides for a fascinating cross of classical narrative cinema and self-reflexive video experiment. Kirberg develops a film language that seeks to solve the problem of representing art in film by using the referential system of art, while at the same time deploying the psychological wealth and emotional weight of the narrative film. The Sleeping Girl is an impressive contribution to the aesthetic repertoire of contemporary international cinema. –Berlinale - DirectorChristian SchwochowStarsStine Fischer ChristensenUlrich NoethenDagmar ManzelFine suffers from not being seen but she also does her best at not being noticed, even though she is an acting student. At night, when her mentally handicapped sister Jule cannot get to sleep and stereotypically bangs her head against the wall, Fine turns the recorder on and gives a firework of singing, acting and dancing. However in the acting school she lacks self confidence to uninhibitedly storm the stage. After the well known director Kasper Friedemann invites Fine for an audition, she convinces him with her acting. But he also sees in Fine an injured being (vulnerable personality) that matches his vision of Camille, the main character in his next play. Fine gets her first big part that she in no way wants to lose. She slips into another identity. As Camille, she awakens to her femininity, but through Camille, Fine also loses her own strengths that she shows every day in dealing with her sister Jule. Because Camille is not only self-conscious and sexually active but at the same time mentally fragile and self-destructive. Fine puts herself in the hands of her director who lets her go through hell without psychologically rescuing her. A dangerous game in which she becomes her own enemy.

- DirectorRichard AyoadeStarsCraig RobertsSally HawkinsPaddy Considine15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life. The world hadn’t been waiting for the Welsh Rushmore, which makes Submarine that much more of a thrill. Full of surprises and amazingly affecting, this is a film to fall in love with. Writer-director Richard Ayoade is already a rising star in the UK thanks to his work on The IT Crowd. With the wry comedy and dead-on observations in this debut, he has found a whole new canvas for his view of flawed youth.
Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) has two big ambitions: to save his parents’ marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Worried that his mom (the always delightful Sally Hawkins) is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham (Paddy Considine, hilarious here in a comedy hairdo), Oliver monitors his parents’ sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from Mom to Dad. His love interest Jordana (a spirited performance by Yasmin Paige) is refreshingly complicated; a self-professed pyromaniac, she supervises Oliver’s journal writing – especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out.
Based on Joe Dunthorne’s acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge. Oliver is a consummate anti-hero, as sardonic and self-obsessed as any postmodern Holden Caulfield, and Roberts plays the role with the necessary cocktail of stubborn egotism and gangly unease. Ayoade is clearly a devotee of Godard, employing snippets of music and riffing on his use of colour-coding. But even with the shades of Godard and Wes Anderson, this vibrant film comes off as a real original and marks the beginning of a career to watch closely. - DirectorCorneliu PorumboiuStarsDragos BucurVlad IvanovIon StoicaA police officer refuses to arrest a young man for offering drugs to his friends.Brillante
