Favorite animated/cgi/stop-motion movies/TV shows
(I will add more movies!) A list of animated movies whether they be traditionally hand drawn, stop-motion, or CGI. I like any animated movie that actually tries to be different from other movies, or at least has good execution. While plot is important, execution is even more important. I will have some Disney movies, but I will probably not have all of them listed like some people, because only specific Disney movies really impress me.

- DirectorJames AlgarSamuel ArmstrongFord Beebe Jr.StarsLeopold StokowskiDeems TaylorThe Philadelphia OrchestraA series of eight famous pieces of classical music, conducted by Leopold Stokowski and interpreted in animation by Walt Disney's team of artists.Fantasia has to be one of the firsts that pops into my mind. A beautiful mix of music and art in an animated feature which is unlike any other. The finale "Night on the Bald Mountain" is one of the best uses of animation I have ever seen. I can't think of any movies by Disney or by other which have captured that level of detail and horror in one creature.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppIsla FisherTimothy OlyphantRango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.Rango is a great example of a good director doing what he is best at: a genre movie. Gore Verbinski made Pirates of the Caribbean. Rango is probably the most detailed animated movie out to date right now. The movie does something rare for a CGI movie which is mixing adult humor, violence, and an actually interesting plot in what looks like a movie aimed towards kids.
- DirectorShane AckerStarsElijah WoodJennifer ConnellyCrispin GloverA rag doll that awakens in a postapocalyptic future holds the key to humanity's salvation. Not necessarily the best movie, and honestly I do not like it too much because a great concept was ruined by poor script and execution. BUT its concept is very original for a CGI film and I am still impressed by its action sequences and amazing universe that I still have it here. Come on that Bat robot was Sa-WHEET!
- DirectorHenry SelickStarsDakota FanningTeri HatcherJohn HodgmanWandering her rambling old house in her boring new town, an 11-year-old Coraline discovers a hidden door to a strangely idealized version of her life. In order to stay in the fantasy, she must make a frighteningly real sacrifice.Coraline is a movie that took me off by surprise. I expected a good movie, but nothing as good as it was. In my eyes Coraline is an almost perfect movie. Coraline is the only stop-motion movie where during the movie I could not notice that it was stop-motion. It's just that good.
- DirectorSteve BoxNick ParkStarsPeter SallisHelena Bonham CarterRalph FiennesWallace and his loyal dog, Gromit, set out to discover the mystery behind the garden sabotage that plagues their village and threatens the annual giant vegetable growing contest.A movie that took 5 years to make! And what a great movie it is! Ardman is one of the only companies that I can think of that has actually made a clay animated movie. There have been plenty of stop-motion movies or doll animated movies, but not really any clay animated. Curse of the were-rabbit is hilarious if you understand the Wallace and Gromit humor and if you read everything you see. The movie has sooooo many written puns on books, boxes, record albums and other places. If you can't read, then you are missing a lot of this movie.
- DirectorMark OsborneJohn StevensonStarsJack BlackIan McShaneAngelina JolieTo everyone's surprise, including his own, Po, an overweight, clumsy panda, is chosen as protector of the Valley of Peace. His suitability will soon be tested as the valley's arch-enemy is on his way.A great movie with a great sequel. Kung Fu Panda will stand out as one of Dreamwork's greatest movies ever next to How to Train Your Dragon. The movie has a surprisingly interesting plot while not the most original, and actually stays true to Chinese culture. Actually it made more money in China than any Chinese movie made in China.
- DirectorJennifer Yuh NelsonStarsJack BlackAngelina JolieJackie ChanPo and his friends fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon, but first the Dragon Warrior must come to terms with his past. While not a faultless movie, it still is great. The character's a voices are back and the action is much better and a lot bigger. Compared to the first movie there are a lot less breaks from action and all of the action flows from one sequence to another non-stop. A different formula from the first, but still good.
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.Definitely my least watched Pixar movie, but that is because some movies are only meant to be watched a couple of times. Up is a sad movie with a lot of deep themes in it. Got to hand it to Pixar, when I first heard of this movie's concept back in 2005 I didn't expect much.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsBen BurttElissa KnightJeff GarlinIn the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.Wall-E breaks the formula of CGI films by having a character that can't really speak, the secondary character can't really speak, and they are robots. The movie actually isn't meant to be preachy, it's just a coincidence that in our modern society everyone is trying to be green. The director actually said he didn't mean for a green message, and just thought the concept was cool.
- DirectorNathan GrenoByron HowardStarsMandy MooreZachary LeviDonna MurphyThe magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.Shocked? I was! Tangled is a rare movie where the trailers did a lot of damage to the movie for me. The trailers looked like the movie was trying to be hip, which always annoys me but in reality there is a much more interesting movie here and it is quite good.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsAnika Noni RoseKeith DavidOprah WinfreyA waitress, desperate to fulfill her dreams as a restaurant owner, is set on a journey to turn a frog prince back into a human being, but she has to face the same problem after she kisses him.I saw something in this movie that I don't think other people saw. I mainly enjoyed the movie for trying to bring back animation, and for the most amazing villain Disney has had since Hades or Chernabog (Fantasia). The movie may not be the most original, but its broadway musical style was what I loved about it the most, next to the villain who is extremely dark and genuinely cool.
- DirectorRoger AllersRob MinkoffStarsMatthew BroderickJeremy IronsJames Earl JonesLion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.A good movie that has great animation. It is hard for me to right a description about it because after watching it so many times in my mind it has lost the magic it once had, but it is still a great movie.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsTate DonovanSusan EganJames WoodsThe son of Zeus and Hera is stripped of his immortality as an infant and must become a true hero in order to reclaim it.I believe this movie has a 6 on IMDB!!!! Out of all of the Disney animated movies this one is by far my favorite. I think a lot more work and effort went into this movie than most Disney movies because there were a lot more interesting character designs. I loved the whole Greek mythology theme, though a lot of it is inaccurate. The monsters were really good, especially the Hydra battle. Hades was also an ingenious villain who is up with Disney's top three darkest and coolest villains.
- DirectorHenry SelickStarsDanny ElfmanChris SarandonCatherine O'HaraJack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.Another great stop-motion movie. While a bit overrated, it is still great. The biggest issue I have with this movie is that Oogie Boogie was thrown into the plot only for the sake of a villain. He really didn't fit with the plot too well.
- DirectorDean DeBloisChris SandersStarsJay BaruchelGerard ButlerChristopher Mintz-PlasseA hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed. One of Dreamwork's finest. A bit unexpected of Dreamwork's to make a movie this good, but over 2 1/2 years of work was put into this movie. The characters were all good, and the relationship between Toothless and Hiccup was really fun to watch. I honestly think the movie could've added another fifteen minutes to it but it is still good.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonVicky JensonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazA mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back. The Shrek series is by now entirely killed by its Third and Fourth movie and spin-off but there was a magical time when Shrek was the bomb! Before the characters were overused, before the jokes became old there was an original and witty movie that poked fun of many Disney movies. Great movie!
- DirectorEric DarnellTim JohnsonLawrence GutermanStarsWoody AllenSharon StoneGene HackmanA rather neurotic ant tries to break from his totalitarian society while trying to win the affection of the princess he loves. While maybe not the best animated movie, it has a place in my heart for actually trying something entirely different while it was only the second CGI movie ever released I believe and Dreamworks' first. This movie will be forgotten which is sad. This is mainly because it was not meant to be a kids' movie. Like Small Soldiers (also Dreamworks) it was a more adult/teenage oriented movie that was mislabeled as being for kids. Antz does having swearing (egad) and does have blood and violence. Dreamworks' most violent to date!
- DirectorSylvain ChometStarsJean-Claude DondaEilidh RankinDuncan MacNeilA French illusionist finds himself out of work and travels to Scotland, where he meets a young woman. Their ensuing adventure changes both their lives forever.Beautifully animated, and a much deeper storyline for a hand drawn movie. This movie got nowhere as much attention as it should've which is really sad.
- DirectorCory EdwardsTodd EdwardsTony LeechStarsAnne HathawayGlenn ClosePatrick WarburtonLittle Red Riding Hood, the Wolf, the Woodsman and Granny all tell the police the events that led up to their encounter.Don't even talk to me about the second movie... don't even mention the second movie EVER! Hoodwinked! was a surprisingly good movie that had a budget of almost nothing. Really the animation is quite terrible, though the movie was trying to be slightly stop-motion styled when they spoke or moved to try and feel like a 50s-60s cartoon. Great execution and great dialog, just the animation ruined it for some... and the sequel ruined it as well.
- DirectorChris WedgeCarlos SaldanhaStarsDenis LearyJohn LeguizamoRay RomanoThe story revolves around sub-zero heroes: a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, a sloth and a prehistoric combination of a squirrel and rat, known as Scrat. The first movie, not the second, third, or upcoming fourth. Like Shrek, this is one of those series that had a great and original idea, but then made unneeded sequels. The third isn't terrible though. Ice Age was interesting because it has this loony toons feel, and has great dialoug. The characters' interactions with each other are priceless, and the dry, cold, frozen landscape was well made. I think this movie has held up well.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsDaveigh ChaseSuzanne PleshetteMiyu IrinoDuring her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. If you ask any animation fanatic, or anyone who likes animated movies they will know of this. By a now legendary director (I didn't write his name because I was afraid to misspell it) the movie has great animation and an original plot. I wish the english dialoug was the same as the japanese, because when movies are dubbed into english they change entire conversations just to get the lip-sync right. The fact this movie is critically acclaimed in America and the dubbing isn't the same as the original just proves how great it is.
- DirectorJohn LasseterStarsTom HanksTim AllenDon RicklesA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom. The first CGI movie so it kind of has to be on this list. Sort of like the first fully animated movie should be on this list also...
- DirectorWilliam CottrellDavid HandWilfred JacksonStarsAdriana CaselottiHarry StockwellLucille La VerneExiled into the dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, a princess is rescued by seven dwarf miners who make her part of their household.First animated movie so kind of HAVE to have it on this list.
- DirectorJohn LasseterAsh BrannonLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackWhen Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.Bigger plot than the first movie, more characters, more interesting characters, and pretty good humor. Out of the three Toy Story movies this one is my favorite. Besides the intro to this movie was amazing!
- DirectorChris ButlerSam FellStarsKodi Smit-McPheeAnna KendrickChristopher Mintz-PlasseA misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.I cannot describe how much I love this movie. Fantastic stop-motion animation, great characters, amazing finale, and it had some emotionally moving scenes in it as well. Definitely as good as Coraline if not better.
- DirectorMartin RosenJohn HubleyStarsJohn HurtRichard BriersRalph RichardsonHoping to escape destruction by human developers and save their community, a colony of rabbits, led by Hazel and Fiver, seek out a safe place to set up a new warren. While not the most amazing movie, it is on my list mainly because it was incredibly different compared to most animated movies of its day... oh yeah and did I mention it shows tons of blood and gore involving rabbits getting their throats torn out?
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.Wow, what a movie! I was happy that Disney understood video games some what, but this movie makes soooooo many game cameos it's hard not to love it! The plot and characters are really good as well and it is genuinely funny which is a rare thing to come by these days.
- CreatorTom RueggerStarsRob PaulsenJess HarnellTress MacNeilleThe zany adventures of a trio of 1930s animated characters in the modern world. What's not to like? The animation is high-quality for a TV show and the humor is very sophisticated. One of the great TV shows in general, and the characters are all lovable.
- CreatorMichael Dante DiMartinoBryan KonietzkoStarsDee Bradley BakerZach Tyler EisenMae WhitmanIn a war-torn world of elemental powers, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world.A great TV show which was able to combine anime with western influences. While the first episodes weren't so enthralling, the show develops into something much greater than anyone could've ever imagined.
- CreatorJeff 'Swampy' MarshDan PovenmireStarsVincent MartellaDan PovenmireAshley TisdalePhineas and Ferb invent, scheme, and stay one step ahead of their bratty sister. Meanwhile, their pet platypus plots against evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.A hilarious animated show which is able to keep things intelligent and... bogus at the same time. Phineas and Ferb aren't annoying and the all of the characters are rather enjoyable. I give credit to the show for having good musical numbers and understanding sophisticated humor. Jokes like the characters playing a card game with famous existentialists, such as Kafka, or making reference to Citizen Kane.
- CreatorTite KuboStarsJohnny Yong BoschMichelle RuffStephanie ShehHigh school student Ichigo Kurosaki, who has the ability to see ghosts, gains soul reaper powers from Rukia Kuchiki and sets out to save the world from "Hollows".Bleach is an excellent anime, and a rather popular one. What I love about Bleach is that it is able to balance action and character development fairly well. Other popular shows (Naruto) fail at having exciting in depth battles. Bleach's action is very fast paced and exciting. There is rarely a dull battle. I will exclude the side arcs, because those aren't in the manga and don't count.
- CreatorShin'ichirô WatanabeHajime YatateStarsKôichi YamaderaUnshô IshizukaMegumi HayashibaraThe futuristic misadventures and tragedies of an easygoing bounty hunter and his partners.Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest animes ever. The animation is great, the characters are intriguing and in depth, and the episodes are very diverse. Each episode is drastically different from the last, so one episode could be a horror, the next a comedy, the next a thriller. You never know with Cowboy Bebop.
- CreatorShin'ichirô WatanabeStarsKazuya NakaiGinpei SatoAyako KawasumiFuu, a waitress who works in a teahouse, rescues two master swordsmen, Mugen and Jin, from their execution to help her find the "samurai who smells of sunflowers."Made by the makers of Cowboy Bebop is yet another excellent show. While not nearly up to the same level as Cowboy Bebop, it still has excellent characters. The humor is very funny in Samurai Champloo, if there is one problem I had with the show it was that every once in awhile the characters will go out of character.
