Bollywood films
Bollywood titles and other films with Indian flavor that I've seen, some I recommend and some I don't. I tend to watch Bollywood movies when I just want some light entertainment so happy ends are what you are likely to find here. There are lots of draconian fathers, almost-kisses and random dancing flashmobs. You may need to suspend some disbelief to enjoy some of these films.
The list is loosely ordered so that the my absolute favorites are in the beginning and the ones I liked the least are in the very end but the middle part is more random. I try not to spoil the story but there are some comments about plot elements and problems.

- DirectorImtiaz AliStarsShahid KapoorKareena KapoorTarun AroraA depressed wealthy businessman finds his life changing after he meets a spunky and care-free young woman. Two strangers meet on a train and take turns changing each other's lives. This one is a particular favorite, one of my comfort films that I watch over and over again. Starring Shahid Kapoor in his best role and Kareena Kapoor whose character starts out as a little annoying but grows on me. There are many nice musical numbers and some amazing scenery and I just love everything about it.
- DirectorRajkumar HiraniStarsAamir KhanAnushka SharmaSanjay DuttAn alien on Earth loses the only device he can use to communicate with his spaceship. His innocent nature and child-like questions force the country to evaluate the impact of religious views on people.Aamir Khan has an extraterrestrial look on the life on Earth and the false numbers people are ringing, Anoushka Sharma supporting.
- DirectorAamir KhanAmole GupteStarsDarsheel SafaryAamir KhanTisca ChopraAn eight-year-old boy is thought to be a lazy trouble-maker, until the new art teacher has the patience and compassion to discover the real problem behind his struggles in school.A great child actor portraying a special needs child with a rich imagination who gets sent to a boarding school. I like the way the boy's thoughts are transferred into art and cartoon sequences. Aamir Khan as a teacher. The music brings the story forward. A brilliant film that deserves all the praise it got. Directed by Aamir Khan, his only direction so far (I hope there is more to come).
- DirectorRajkumar HiraniStarsAamir KhanMadhavanMona SinghTwo friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".A film that is funny and sad and entertaining and brilliant and surprising and philosophical and hilarious at the same time. And there is Aamir Khan who rocks.
- DirectorFarhan AkhtarStarsAamir KhanSaif Ali KhanAkshaye KhannaThree inseparable childhood friends are just out of college. Nothing comes between them - until they each fall in love, and their wildly different approaches to relationships creates tension.A star-studded film about friendship and life choices with Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan starring. A special mention for Dimple Kapadia who stands out from the actresses, besides Preity Zinta. It was the first film that Farhan Akhtar wrote and directed, and what a great debut it is. Everything feels real here. Oh, and did I say Aamir Khan is in this movie? "It's hard to improve on perfection."
- DirectorGauri ShindeStarsSrideviAdil HussainMehdi NebbouA quiet, sweet tempered housewife endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter every day because of her inability to speak and understand English.Sridevi empowers herself on an English course. It's refreshing to see a film in which the heroine is more than window decoration.
- DirectorNikkhil AdvaniStarsPreity G ZintaShah Rukh KhanSaif Ali KhanNaina, an introverted, perpetually depressed girl's life changes when she meets Aman. But Aman has a secret of his own which changes their lives forever. Embroiled in all this is Rohit, Naina's best friend who conceals his love for her.A funny, sad and sentimental story starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan.
- DirectorRohit ShettyStarsDeepika PadukoneShah Rukh KhanSathyarajA man travelling to Rameswaram via Chennai express for his late grandfather's ashes immersion finds himself in trouble after helping a don's daughter and her cousins board the train.SRK and Deepika in a comedy that actually was funny (not a given). I enjoyed this a lot. Some of the jokes are nods to older Bollywood films so a little filmi enthusiasm helps to understand them. There is too much gratuitous violence for viewing with the little ones (why do so many Bollywood fathers think that a bloody fight is the way to tell if a man is good enough for their daughter?) and the Goa subplot seemed a little juvenile for a man of SRK's age. But it certainly entertains and I understand why it was a superhit.
- DirectorFarah KhanStarsShah Rukh KhanSushmita SenSuniel ShettyAn army major goes undercover as a college student. His mission is both professional and personal: to protect his general's daughter from a radical militant, and to find his estranged half-brother.SRK as an action hero (and when I say hero I mean he can dodge bullets in slow motion in shades of the Matrix) and Sunil Shetty as the villain. It crosses several genres from a terrorist chase action movie to a college comedy musical, complete with some family drama. There is catchy music and cool end credits.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsVarun DhawanIleana D'CruzNargis FakhriSeenu and Sunaina fall in love with each other when he saves her from a corrupt policeman who wishes to marry her. Meanwhile, Ayesha, a girl Seenu meets on a train journey, wants to marry him.Fun fluff with Varun Dhawan. Salman Khan only has a voiceover part although IMDB names him as the star.
- DirectorSanjay Leela BhansaliStarsRanbir KapoorSonam KapoorSalman KhanTwo souls arrive in a small town, one on vacation, the other to meet a lover. They spend the most magical dream-like days of their lives in that town... with each other. This story of unrequited love is visually one of the most gorgeous movies that I have ever seen. Every shot is a dream world. Based on a Dostojevski story. Their debut film for both Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, also featuring Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan (briefly).
- DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsShahid KapoorPriyanka Chopra JonasDeb MukherjeeThe desperate lives of two estranged twin brothers converge over missing drugs, politics, racial prejudice, corrupt cops and an unplanned pregnancy.Shahid Kapoor starring in a double role as estranged twins. Kaminey means scoundrel. One of my favorite Bollywood ballads Pehli Bar Mohabbat is from this film.
- DirectorKiran RaoStarsPrateik Patil BabbarMonica DograKriti MalhotraThe lives of four people intersect in Mumbai: a washer-man who wants to become an actor, a banker-turned-photographer, a painter looking for inspiration, and a newly-married immigrant who journals her experiences on home video. If you like things more understated than your typical Bollywood fare, this could be your movie. It's kind of sad, no dances, no action scenes, no dramatic overacting, no genre hopping - just people whose lives cross in Mumbai. Aamir Khan as a painter who keeps watching video letters.
- DirectorSujoy GhoshStarsVidya BalanParambrata ChattopadhyayIndraneil SenguptaA pregnant woman's search for her missing husband takes her from London to Kolkata, but everyone she questions denies having ever met him.I would love to see more female-centered films from Bollywood.
This is Vidya Balan's movie all the way through. - DirectorMilind UkeyStarsNana PatekarShahid KapoorAyesha TakiaA new English school-teacher also teaches music but ends up leading both teachers and students to revolt against the school management.Shahid Kapoor looking heroic trying to save a school. Money is the root of all evil. I like the villains in this one.
- DirectorAnurag SinghStarsShahid KapoorRani MukerjiAnupam KherIn a village where girls don't play cricket, Veera puts on a turban and beard and becomes Veer to fulfill her dreams and meets Rohan. And fun begins.Rani Mukerji, Shahid Kapoor starring with Anupam Kher supporting as his father. This is another Twelfth Night remake with a girl who doesn't look or sound anything like a boy when she's dressed as one and I think they forgot one broken arm but it put a silly smile on my face. I don't know the first thing about cricket but it didn't really matter. My favorite scene is the SRK spoof.
- DirectorNikkhil AdvaniStarsRishi KapoorDimple KapadiaAkshay KumarA talented young Indian cricket player must defy his father's wishes to play for the side of England, a rebellion his siblings quietly cheer.Another story about cricket and chasing after forgotten dreams. The beginning is powerful, Akshay Kumar does a lot of pensive staring and Anoushka Sharma is in the feisty, bubbly role she is good at.
- DirectorYash ChopraStarsShah Rukh KhanPreity G ZintaRani Mukerji"Veer-Zaara" is a saga of love, separation, courage, and sacrifice. A love story that is an inspiration and will remain a legend forever.A classic. SRK and Preity Zinta as star crossed lovers and Rani Mukherji fighting for true love as well as gender equality. Anupam Kher was not cast as the daddy this time.
- DirectorAli Abbas ZafarStarsImran KhanKatrina KaifAli ZafarA quirky rom-com where Kush finds the ideal Indian bride Dimple for his brother Luv and a series of comical and unpredictable events follow. This film is a lot of fun, with a rocking soundtrack and starring loveable but confused Imran Khan and rebellious Katrina Kaif.
- DirectorYash ChopraStarsShah Rukh KhanMadhuri DixitKarisma KapoorA grand musical about three passionate and dreamy characters: Rahul, Pooja and Nisha. Will their dreams come true? Will they find their true love?Everybody wants SRK, and why not. This starts a bit slow as it takes several dances before all the main characters even officially meet, but I liked the heartbreak scenes. Akshay Kumar has a small but cute part here, love the pantomime. There seem to be a lot of Indian movies where people are amazingly civil when it turns out someone they love loves another.
- DirectorAditya ChopraStarsShah Rukh KhanKajolAmrish PuriWhen Raj meets Simran in Europe, it isn't love at first sight but when Simran moves to India for an arranged marriage, love makes its presence felt.Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in a classic. This is The Movie one is supposed to be raving about, the Mousetrap of the Bollywood cinema. And it is charming. To tell you the truth I find his fake chuckles a little annoying at places but the scenery is iconic, the banter is funny and the serious moments are emotional. I don't care for some of the musical numbers, and the prolonged fight scene.
The father's got scary eyes. Amrish Puri, that is. Anupam Kher's other daddy is quite jovial. - DirectorPunit MalhotraStarsImran KhanSonam KapoorSammir DattaniJay doesn't believe in love Stories, and Simran, is a girl who's in love with the idea of Love itself.Another Imran Khan comedy with catchy music. He hates love stories but, well, you know, there's this girl...
My favorite song from this film: Jab Mila Tu - DirectorManmohan DesaiStarsVinod KhannaRishi KapoorAmitabh BachchanThree brothers are separated and united after many years - one is brought up a Hindu, another a Muslim and the last (and most memorable) a Christian. Hilarity and adventure ensues. This film was recommended to me and it is quite an entertaining one. Three brothers get separated from their parents and each other and grow up in religiously diverse foster homes. I tend to be bored by many fight scenes but in this movie there is an epic one (a one-man band just continues playing like nothing was happening). It was a superhit in 1977 and Amitabh Bachchan got the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
- DirectorBunty SoormaStarsArjun RampalAmeesha PatelBobby DeolA blind woman is taken care by a wealthy nobleman after her fiancee is presumed to be dead. Things takes a turn when her former fiancee comes back to her, which puts her in a dilemma. This love triangle starring Arjun Rampal, Amisha Patel and Bobby Deol is one of my comfort movies that I've watched several times. But it probably depends on your tolerance threshold for melodrama and convenient plot devices. There are lives getting saved, lives being threatened, dramatic recoveries, everything. Just perfect for a certain mood. I love the heartbreak scene before the final conclusion. The moral of the story is: if you love somebody, you had better find out who the heck it is. The soundtrack is one of my favorites.
- DirectorKaran JoharStarsShah Rukh KhanKajolAmitabh BachchanAfter marrying a poor woman, rich Rahul is disowned by his father and moves to London to build a new life. Years later, his now-grown younger brother Rohan embarks on a mission to bring Rahul back home and reunite the family.A sentimental classic with a star cast and some catchy tunes. Everybody is an emotional retard here and I've no idea how it managed to last three and a half hours but I liked it.
- DirectorRitesh BatraStarsIrrfan KhanNimrat KaurNawazuddin SiddiquiA mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox. This is a nice little quiet film about a lunch box delivery going wrong.
- DirectorAbbas TyrewalaStarsImran KhanGenelia DeshmukhManjari FadnnisTwo best friends being convinced that they are not in love search for each other's love. One of my favorite Bollywood musical numbers is from this movie (Kabhi Kabhi Aditi).
- DirectorPrabhu DevaStarsShahid KapoorSonakshi SinhaSonu SoodAn aimless ruffian starts working for a drug baron and his mission is to kill the rival, whose niece he eventually falls for.An entertaining action masala. Shahid Kapoor spends half the film making silly faces at Sonakshi Sinha and deals with local drug lords the rest of the time.
- DirectorKunal KohliStarsShahid KapoorPriyanka Chopra JonasPrachi DesaiThe true love between a couple in 1910, 1960 and 2012. Their love is so strong that even destiny wants to bring them together.Shahid and Priyanka make a cute couple. I like the chaplinesque sequences and the period feel in the beginning of the film the most. The idea of the three different lifetimes bothers me a little with the timing because if the people were in their twenties in 1910, 1960 and 2012 and if we assume that you have to die first before you can be born again and have another lifetime the poor dears who came first had their lives cut tragically short.
- DirectorKen GhoshStarsShahid KapoorGenelia DeshmukhMohnish BehlNew love convinces a struggling actor and dancer to enter a talent competition that could make him a superstar.Shahid Kapoor gets to do a lot of dancing here, and it's actually part of the plot instead of the random flashmobs you usually get in a Bollywood movie. I would probably have enjoyed my dancing lessons more if there had been a teacher like him. Genelia is good too. I saw an interview of the director who said that she radiates happiness around her and looking at her I can believe that.
- DirectorManeesh SharmaStarsRanveer SinghAnushka SharmaRanjit BatraShruti and Bittoo become partners in their very own "Wedding planning ka bijness" in Delhi and in the process discover friendship, love and one another.A really colorful and visual movie. Perfect for a dark, dreary autumn night. The song Ainvayi Ainvayi always cheers me up although I don't have a clue what it means.
- DirectorManeesh SharmaStarsRanveer SinghAnushka SharmaParineeti ChopraA smooth and charming conman, Ricky Bahl, cons girls for a living but finally meets his match is this fun-filled "ROM-CON."Another handsome kaminey cons three ladies and they decide to con him right back. Starring Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh who were also seen in Band Baaja Baaraat. Parineeti Chopra got several awards for her debut here.
- DirectorYash ChopraStarsShah Rukh KhanKatrina KaifAnushka SharmaAn uncompromising film on true love from the legendary and unforgettable director Yash Chopra which is fascinatingly distinctive and contemporary. The last project of the late director/producer Yash Chopra, who was behind several films on my list. SRK gets into the business of defying death after an ill-fated love affair. The break-up seemed weakly motivated, this plot would never have happened if Katrina Kaif's character had had a little more sense and it doesn't seem logical to me to lie to amnesiacs about their history. But otherwise it's a beautiful film. Also featuring Anupam Kher as the father. I love everything about the soundtrack.
- DirectorAziz MirzaStarsShahid KapoorVidya BalanVishal MalhotraA luckless architect discovers a social activist to be his lucky charm. Unfortunately, she's protecting the community center he's aiming to win a contract to tear down.Shahid Kapoor starring as an architect with really bad luck who meets his lucky charm. An enjoyable romantic comedy, even though it felt like deja-vu.
- DirectorSatish KaushikStarsKareena KapoorShahid KapoorAarti ChhabriaHoping that destiny will re-unite them, a couple, on the verge of getting married, attempt to locate each other.Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor together again in a story of serendipity. She thinks she's destined to meet the guy of her dreams but things turn sour when she finds out how he's trying to help the fate to make it happen. It's not a magical movie like their JWM was but it has its moments.
- DirectorSooraj R. BarjatyaStarsShahid KapoorAmrita RaoAnupam KherPoonam, a traditionally brought-up young woman, is to marry Prem, a groom chosen by her uncle. Poonam and Prem's faith and love are to be tested however, when an accident occurs and Poonam might be scarred for life.Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao in a love story of an arranged engagement. Also featuring Anupam Kher. I find some of the acting here a bit stiff and unnatural but there is a beautiful hospital scene. A part of the plot requires familial jealousy because one daughter is prettier than the other but they cast two gorgeous actresses in these roles.
- StarsAamir KhanVikky KumarSrideviAamir Khan hosts and produces this documentary/talkshow that explores the social issues affecting modern India.Yeah, you caught me - this is not a Bollywood film, it's a talk show presented by Aamir Khan. They explore various social problems in India, but many themes are relevant also more globally. Worth watching, and not only for Aamir Khan; he interviews a number of amazing people. The episodes are available on YT. I'm learning a lot about the side of India that they don't show that much in Bollywood films.
- DirectorR. KannanStarsBharath SrinivasanTamannaah BhatiaSanthanamA chance encounter between two polar-opposite strangers on a train journey ends up changing their lives. Two strangers meet on a train and take turns changing each other's lives. If it sounds familiar it's because this one is a Tamil remake of Jab We Met. A copy is always a copy and you keep seeing ghosts of the original but there are a few things I actually like better about this movie. Watching JWM I always thought the ending should have brought them back to the train instead of the random shooting scene and when they go to her home the second time the reception they get and Gautham's reaction to it helps make sense of why they didn't tell straight away. But I think this version spends too much time on minor characters. Maybe they are funny in Tamil but something got lost in translation.
- DirectorKunal KohliStarsSaif Ali KhanRani MukerjiKirron KherA novel look at the eternal battle of the sexes and the trials and tribulations of Karan and Rhea and their attempts to understand each other. When Harry Met Sally without the fake orgasm scene. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji; Jimmy Shergill in a small role.
- DirectorDanish AslamStarsImran KhanDeepika PadukoneNamit ShahAaliya is not ready for commitment even after a decade-long friendship with Abhay. She remains indifferent when he follows her to Australia, but is finally shaken when he announces his marriage.I saw this without subtitles so I missed a lot but I managed to enjoy it nevertheless. It's an essay in cuteness and the musical numbers didn't distract but helped bring forward the story here. It's beautifully shot.
- DirectorAziz MirzaStarsShah Rukh KhanJuhi ChawlaJohny LeverIn order to seek justice for a man who exacts vengeance on a politician, who was responsible for his daughter's death, two rival reporters teams up to help him to prove his innocence.SRK and Juhi Chawla are trying to save Paresh Rawal's life in a patriotic comedy-drama that reminds me a little of His Girl Friday.
- DirectorFarah KhanStarsShah Rukh KhanDeepika PadukoneAbhishek BachchanA gang of amateur dancers takes part in a dancing competition to avenge their personal vendetta.SRK plans a festive heist with a motley crew of friends to avenge his father (Anupam Kher, who else?) who was framed for a diamond robbery. Quite entertaining. The impressive plumbing deserves a honorable mention - how is it possible to get rid of so much water in such a short time?
- DirectorA.R. MurugadossStarsAkshay KumarSonakshi SinhaFreddy DaruwalaA military officer attempts to hunt down a terrorist, destroy a terrorist gang and deactivate the sleeper cells under its command.Akshay Kumar in action, Govinda in a supporting comical role. Quite entertaining but the script for Sonakshi Sinha's female lead is a bit disappointing. When her sports career gets introduced I thought she'd have something to do in the film besides think about marriage but nah, she's just your regular window dressing here.
- DirectorNikkhil AdvaniStarsSalman KhanPriyanka Chopra JonasAnil KapoorSix couples in love must face different problems caused by love itself. Do they resolve their issues and face life anew, or do they succumb under pressure ?This is an episode movie following the interconnected relationships of several people. The director Nikhil Advani did Kal Ho Na ho as well. I liked John Abraham, Salman Khan, and Govinda segments the best. I'm not really sure why one couldn't both have a relationship and act in a Karan Johar movie (Kajol did while married) but whatever. I would have cut some of the other storylines because it was hard to warm up to the characters and there is so much going on that it seems to take forever to get back to the people whose fate you started caring about. I gave it ten stars but they're really all meant for John Abraham and Vidya Balan.
- DirectorRajkumar SantoshiStarsRanbir KapoorKatrina KaifDarshan JariwalaThe wacky adventures of a young man who is willing to sacrifice his own love to insure the happiness of others, even trying to get the girl of his dreams married to the guy of her dreams.Just some fun fluff with Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor.
- DirectorImtiaz AliStarsSaif Ali KhanDeepika PadukoneRishi KapoorAn old-fashioned romantic tells his personal love story to a modern man who has just broken up with his girlfriend. Has love really ever changed?Another enjoyable tale by Imtiaz Ali, the director/writer of JWM. A story about a break-up for practical reasons. It turns out it's not so easy to stay away. I didn't care for all the musical scenes here but Yeh Dooriyan is beautiful.
- DirectorMandeep KumarStarsRiteish DeshmukhGenelia DeshmukhOm PuriMini isn't eager to wed the rich suitor who's been chosen for her, so she stages her own kidnapping and runs off with a man who works for her father.Folks, don't try this at home. Usually a kidnapping is probably less fun. The two leads got married for real this year so it might be we're seeing some real chemistry here. Cheerful music.
- DirectorShashank KhaitanStarsVarun DhawanAlia BhattAshutosh RanaA girl from Ambala, Kavya Pratap Singh, is about to be married. When she visits Delhi to shop for her 'dhai lakh ka Ghagra, she meets Humpty Sharma, a carefree Delhiite, and falls in love with him.More fun fluff with Varun Dhavan and Alia Bhatt.
- DirectorEeshwar NivasStarsAli ZafarYami GautamAnupam KherA young musician hopes to marry his beautiful Indian girlfriend, but his plans hit a snag when her family learns he's Pakistani.A comedy about what happens when an Indian girl brings a Pakistani boyfriend to meet the family. Anupam Kher as daddy and his real life wife Kirron Kher as mommy. Ali Zafar plays the lead and sings on the soundtrack. It was a flop but I liked it better than some of the reviewers did.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsSanjay DuttSalman KhanKarisma KapoorVicky, a businessman, loves his younger brother Prem, who spends his time chasing women. The family feels that secretary Sapna will make a good wife for Vicky, but she is already in love with Prem.Sanjay Dutt minds the office and his dad hires a new office worker, Karishma Kapoor who gets in comical scrapes almost as often as Sanjay's brother Salman Khan goes shirtless. Pure mindless fun.
- DirectorMudassar AzizStarsSushmita SenFardeen KhanIshita SharmaA man marries so he can inherit his father's wealth.Fardeen Khan marries a village girl to get an inheritance and thinks he can leave her in Punjab and go on with his customary chain smoking Trinidad playboy life, but she begs to differ. When she takes off her eye glasses he doesn't recognize her and, well, you guessed the rest. It's corny but I enjoyed it. Sushmita Sen is the best character, and I like her sofa cushions. SRK in the second half of the film being SRK. Some of the music is nice.
- DirectorSabbir KhanStarsSylvester StalloneDenise RichardsHolly ValanceA romantic comedy about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm but cannot find true love.A comedy about the battle-of-the-sexes. Well, a few quarrelsome specimens anyway. I went in expecting a silly comedy with some stupid plot twists and I wasn't disappointed. They've got a really strange idea of doing surgery for one. But it made me laugh. The IMDB default description says that the stars are Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richardson but Sly does a short cameo only. He shows up at a gala, beats up a bunch of bad guys and comes up with a Hindi oneliner out of nowhere. The real leads are Kareena Kapoor and Akshay Kumar.
- DirectorSamir KarnikStarsAmitabh BachchanVivek OberoiAishwarya Rai BachchanA woman decides to marry her childhood friend, after getting her heart broken by her sweetheart.Love is not in his vocabulary...enter Aishwarya Raj. A predictable but entertaining film.
- DirectorWillard CarrollStarsSalman KhanAli LarterNandana SenAli Larter plays an American actress who becomes immersed in the Bollywood film world.Learn all the Hindi words for love watching Salman Khan in an English language fairytale about typical Bollywood themes love vs tradition. Quite nice and romantic if unrealistic. Ali Larter's character starts out as an annoying D-list diva but of course Prem changes everything. (Is there a reason why Salman Khan's character is named Prem in every other movie?) It's nice that the music numbers are part of the plot and flashmobs don't just randomly start dancing on the street. I liked the dialogue ("what's the worst part of this soul-sucking calamity?) The ending fell a little flat for me, I think they needed a little more apologizing in several directions for a proper resolution and he needed a bit more spine. It's not the main characters who decide how it ends, and I don't usually like that.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsSalman KhanKarisma KapoorOm PuriSapna has lost her parents at an early age and lives with her three quirky uncles - Bhola Nath is a fitness freak, Prabhu Nath is a deeply religious fellow and Vicky Nath is a disco-savvy dude. Sapna is fed up of their quirks and runs away to Europe where she meets Raja. Her purse is stolen and hence she has to depend financially on Raja. During the course of the tour they fall in love after much bickering. When Raja comes to know that to marry Sapna he has to convince her three uncles for their support, he sets off on his mission. As the name might suggest, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge owes a bow to Dilwale Dulhanie Le Jayenge as both storylines have the couple touring the Alps and missing public transport together for the first half of the story and the second half devoted to the boy having to impress the girl's family. It is different enough for the similarities not to bother me and Salman and Karishma make a beautiful couple. For a deep and moving story you'd have to go elsewhere but this is quite a lot of fun if you're just looking for some Bollywood fluff to entertain you. Anupam Kher is in a little different role, and Salman goes shirtless a lot.
- DirectorMehul KumarStarsFardeen KhanAmrita AroraSatish ShahJatin and Karishma, who meet each other on a plane to India, are set to marry the partners chosen by their respective parents. However, they find themselves attracted to each other.Another film in which the characters are thrown together on a journey filled with mishaps and develop a mutual attraction in the process. It was quite enjoyable once it got past the hostility in the beginning which I thought was little over the top and uncalled for. Some of the comedy feels forced but the main characters are ok. Only it is a little hard for a westerner to get into the spirit when her papa gives her the permission to marry the man she loves but she insists that she has to marry the other guy because her papa wanted her to and people would talk if she didn't. Talk about a woman determined to martyr herself. I expect it was intended to come across as a noble sacrifice for family honour but it just seemed idiotic and cowardly to me.
- DirectorVipul Amrutlal ShahStarsAmitabh BachchanAkshay KumarSushmita SenAfter a temperamental man is unceremoniously stripped of his duties as a bank manager, he decides to seek revenge by robbing the bank, for which he trains three blind men.Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in a surprisingly fresh and interesting comedy thriller. The plot is not too believable but it was easy to ignore the holes. Akshay Kumar-Amitabh Bachchan scenes are brilliant. The songs don't really belong in the movie.
- DirectorVipul Amrutlal ShahStarsAkshay KumarKatrina KaifRishi KapoorA man takes his thoroughly-British daughter to his home country, India. There, he arranges her marriage to someone she considers a fool. The daughter attempts to outwit them, but the groom quietly and patiently hatches his own plan.Katrina Kaif entertains in a story about cultures clashing. She's been brought up in Britain and considers herself rather British in everything. Her father wants her to marry a nice Indian guy. Enter Akshay Kumar.
- DirectorVijay LalwaniStarsFarhan AkhtarDeepika PadukoneRam KapoorA much abused loner achieves success, and even wins the heart of his gorgeous co-worker, after getting early morning mysterious phone calls from someone.A shy man changes his life when he starts getting eerie phone calls. Starring Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone. Some nice dialogue in this one and it was more unpredictable than most of the Bollywood films that I've watched tend to be.
- DirectorDharmesh DarshanStarsAkshaye KhannaPriyanka Chopra JonasAmeesha PatelAnu hires Aman, an escort, to accompany her back to London in the hope of making her hunky ex-boyfriend Danny jealous at her sister's wedding. Trouble ensues when Aman falls in love with Anu.The reviews aren't too good but I thought it was quite enjoyable although if you've seen The Wedding Date you have more or less seen this one too. Akshaye Khanna is no Dermot but he does a good job. Anupam Kher is a raunchy daddy character.
- DirectorArjun SablokStarsHrithik RoshanSaif Ali KhanEsha DeolA romantically inclined couple decide to get to know each other through letters without disclosing their identities.Anonymous letters lead to a love triangle between dreamy Hrithik Roshan, starry-eyed Esha Deol and playboy Saif Ali Khan. Her reason for writing anonymously is that she doesn't want to break her grandfather's trust but I don't really understand why grandpa would think that it's better to write to someone whose name she doesn't know. This is kind of slow but I like the bromance scenes between Hrithik and Saif. I love the dramatic orchestration in the soundtrack, perhaps a bit more dramatic than the plot warrants.
- DirectorRakesh RoshanStarsHrithik RoshanAmeesha PatelAnupam KherA young girl meets the doppelganger of her deceased boyfriend and now has a chance to find the people who have murdered him.Hrithik Roshan's and Amisha Patel's first film. Hrithik got quite a few awards for the performance. Guess who's the daddy...I think there must be a law or something. Anupam Kher Must Be Cast As The Father Or There Will Be Punishment.
- DirectorAziz MirzaStarsShah Rukh KhanJuhi ChawlaAditya PancholiRahul Joshi wants to be a successful businessman so he works hard for his boss Siddharth. One day Rahul meets Seema, an up and coming model, and he feels like he's finally met his match. Will Seema fall for Rahul?SRK and Juhi pretending to be married because they can't stand up to his obnoxious boss. I was kinda hoping they'd have developed spines a little earlier but I guess it would have been entirely too short for an Indian movie. There is some cool comical dialogue: "Raju, I have become a fish in your love." (Hard to explain...) My favorite part is the funny face SRK makes when he slides across the floor on the sofa.
- DirectorGulzarStarsSanjeev KumarMoushumi ChatterjeeDeven VermaBased on Shakespeare's 'A Comedy of Errors', this is a story of identical twins (2 pairs) and mistaken identities.A Shakespearean caper with twins.
- DirectorPunit MalhotraStarsTiger ShroffAnanya PandayTara SutariaA student must face off against bullies and overcome hurdles, both academic and romantic, to win his college's coveted Student of the Year trophy. This movie was very predictable, I knew what was going to happen in the first fifteen minutes. But getting there was fun.
- DirectorSanjay GadhviStarsUday ChopraJimmy ShergillBipasha BasuSanjay wakes up to the truth that he loves his best friend Sanjana reluctantly but surely and sets off on a noble mission - to break her wedding.A comedy about a man who realizes he's in love with a childhood friend just as she's getting ready to marry somebody else. Nothing you haven't seen before. It was entertaining but a little too long. Starring Uday Chopra, Tulip Joshi, Bipasha Basu and Jimmy Shergill who is my favorite thing about the movie.
- DirectorSandeep Reddy VangaStarsShahid KapoorKiara AdvaniNikita DuttaAn exalted but short-fused surgeon plunges into a spiral of drugs, alcohol and rage after his intense relationship with his girlfriend turbulently ends.Shahid Kapoor as a troubled young man.
- DirectorAshwini ChaudharyStarsBipasha BasuHelenPradeep KharabA man (R. Madhavan) who helps wronged parties get out of bad relationships meets his match when he takes on a business partner (Bipasha Basu).I think the poster looks like a Christmas movie but this is actually a comedy about a couple specializing in breaking up marriages. Things get serious when they break up people who weren't asking for it. I like the Granny character and the song Mujhko Teri Zaroorat Hai.
- DirectorPrakash KovelamudiStarsKangana RanautRajkummar RaoAmyra DasturFollowing the story of two quirky individuals whose lives pivot between reality and illusions.A thriller in which a woman isn't sure if she's just paranoid or they're really out to get her.
- DirectorAbhinay DeoAkshat VermaStarsImran KhanVir DasKunaal Roy KapurThree struggling room-mates unknowingly become potential prey of a ruthless gangster.I love the song Bhaak DK Bose from this film. I've been told the meaning may be a bit rude but as I don't understand a word it just rocks my socks ;)
- DirectorOnirStarsShabana AzmiBoman IraniSanjay SuriWhile attending his brother's wedding, a Scientist falls for the bride.Another love triangle story. I've got several on the list already but this is quite enjoyable, and not overly long. I guess there are some advantages to being an only child. Favorite song from the soundtrack: Jalte Hain. I wish they'd have ditched the silly research idea because I found it distracting from the overall tone of the film.
- DirectorAnubhav SinhaAnupam SinhaStarsPriyanshu ChatterjeeHimanshu MalikSandali SinhaShekhar accidentally kills his associate Amar, and decides to watch over Amar's company and take care of his family and friends. However, he falls in love with Amar's fiancé Piya. So, the hero of the story is a hit-and-run driver. Not an endearing quality. It's a bit challenging to redeem him from such a beginning. But he's trying. It's a first effort for the writer, the director and several of the actors and I enjoyed it. The soundtrack is okay, nothing that really stands out. The ending is a little abrupt imo. It feels like the filmmakers weren't sure how to handle the tearful reunion and finally resolve the central conflict, so they didn't, and just implied that things will be okay somehow.
- DirectorSangeeth SivanStarsRiteish DeshmukhShreyas TalpadeRiya SenKishan is a young man from Goa whose brain is full of every conceivable trick to make a quick buck. He cons people by slipping into different outfits and by assuming many guises. Julie, is a sexy club dancer with quite a local reputation, but behind her raunchy exterior is a compassionate, kind-hearted woman who goes out of her way to help the needy. Sania Badnaam is a con-woman who uses her sexuality to lure men and leave them penniless later. Beautiful and unwilling to surrender to emotions easily, Sania craves only money and power. Danny Carlos, is a merciless underworld don with wacky fashion sense. He works from Bangkok and operates in India through Sania. Arjun Fernandez, an honorable man who is content making a simple living with whatever money he earns from his garage. He meets the woman of his dreams-Shivani Shastri-on a bed of red hot chillies. She is a simple girl from a Brahmin family, but her subborn, overprotective, and aging father, Pandit Satyabol Shastri, would never let her marry Arjun. It will take a hell of an effort to win her hand from her father. Namdev Mane, an honest cop dedicated to putting criminals behind bars. Some clever criminals who work in disguise have kept him on his toes.Anupam Kher as a half-blind father, Sunil Shetty as a cop and plus some star crossed lovers in a comedy that is quite a lot of fun. The prettiest girl in the film is Ritesh Desmukh who spends a lot of the film in disguise.
- DirectorSatish KaushikStarsAkshaye KhannaAyesha TakiaMallika SherawatA man who thinks he is dying tries to get rid of his fiancée by flirting with a model.Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takia and Mallika Sherawat in a silly fluffy comedy that doesn't make much sense but has funny moments if you can ignore that. The moral of the story: all kinds of things go wrong if you don't communicate. About halfway in there is a madcap gangster plot twist and Sunil Shetty does a funnier version of his Main Hoon Na bad guy character. Oh, yeah, and Anupam Kher.
- DirectorKundan ShahStarsRekhaPreity G ZintaArjun RampalRaising her two daughters, Saritaji "Rekha" fears that history might repeat itself when both of them fall for the same guy.Rekha as a scary mom, Preity Zinta as her misunderstood daughter and Arjun Rampal as the guy who confuses her sister. The film has its moments although I think three hours are too much for this plot. There are some similarities to Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. People are forever trying to marry their sweethearts off to their adopted sisters. Really, when did that ever work?
- DirectorK. Muralimohana RaoStarsKashmira ShahSalman KhanJackie ShroffMusician Prem Kapoor lives with his sister, Neelu, brother-in-law Vinod, his niece and a nephew. He has plans of getting married to his fiancee, Nisha; unfortunately on the wedding day Nisha does not turn up. When a heart-broken Prem confronts Nisha for an explanation she confides to him that she is to get married to a multi-millionaire male from the U.S. who promises to aid her in maintaining the family and an ailing younger brother. Devastated Prem decides to take to alcohol; eventually time passes and Prem starts to fall in love with an acquaintance, Priya Sharma. But before Prem could express his feelings Priya announces her engagement to U.S. returned Rahul Puglia which forces Prem to take to alcohol once again but eventually there is a twist when Prem gets to find out Priya is romantically attracted to him.The reviews aren't good but I found this film cheesy kind of hilarious. Gotta mention the see through shirt with the flapping pockets -it is awesome lol. I don't remember much about The Wedding Singer but I recognized some scenes - there is no Billy Idol here though. Lots of misunderstandings and communication failures. If there is a moral to this story it's don't drink alcohol. It makes Rani Mukerjee's Priya immediately trip and stumble in confusion after swallowing the stuff and Salman's character Prem keeps wondering why the girls he likes prefer rich foreigners to marriage with him. No mystery there, as he makes a very unattractive drunk wth a strange nasal whine when he gets dumped. It is also hard to fight effectively. In true Bollywood style the family even staged a singing, dancing intervention. Some of the humor may well have been unintentional but I was royally entertained by this movie. The very end and the fate of minor female characters annoyed me - why should a woman have to give up a career for an aging lush or be stuck with a cheater type just like that?
- DirectorSubhash GhaiStarsAkshaye KhannaAnil KapoorAishwarya Rai BachchanBusinessman Manav falls for aspiring singer Mansi, but their romance faces an uphill climb when Manav must depart and Mansi's suave manager moves in.Aishwarya Raj, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna in a love triangle. If you don't blink you may see Shahid Kapoor in his first film venture as an uncredited dancer.
- DirectorUmesh MehraStarsAkshay KumarRekhaRaveena TandonA man (Akshay Kumar) searches for his missing brother (Inder Kumar) who is also wanted by the police. There's a little bit of everything, action, melodrama, random musical numbers, slapstick comedy, WWF wrestlers, exploding cars, and Akshay Kumar, only not that much in the way of a plot. Rekha got awards for her performance here.
- DirectorRajiv MenonStarsAjith KumarTabuMammoottyAn Indian adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" focusing on two sisters of opposing temperaments.Aishwarya Raj and Tabu in a Tamil story that is reminiscent of Sense and Sensibility.
- DirectorManoj AgrawalStarsGovindaRani MukerjiJohny LeverRaj, a detective, goes on a Europe trip for his friend's case. During the trip, he falls in love with Anjali, who is impersonating her best friend. Their journey together ensues romance and comic confusion.A paagal comedy of errors with Rani Mukerjee and Govinda in several disguises. My favorite part was Govinda's breathless little monologue near the ending of the movie. The title song got stuck in my ear.
- DirectorAhathianSunil Kumar AgrawalStarsFardeen KhanReema SenApurva AgnihotriA playboy mends his reckless ways and learns the meaning of true love, in his efforts to win his ladylove.Another film in which Fardeen Khan stars as a cynical playboy who at times comes across a little creepy but has his life changed by a good woman.
- DirectorVijay SadanahStarsSalman KhanNeelam KothariAnupam KherAn arrogant heiress becomes amnesiac after her greedy uncle attempts to kill her. A hard-working farmer, who bears a grudge against her, impersonates her husband and brings her to his home as revenge. If you've seen Goldie Hawn's Overboard you may find this eerily familiar. Neelam is a selfish, rude, rich girl, Salman is a young man who works hard and takes care of three boys. Then she loses her memory, he pretends to be her husband, makes her wear ugly clothing and do lots of chores, she becomes nice and everybody is happy. The plot makes no sense but I've learned that some Bollywood films are more enjoyable if you never expect them to make sense to begin with. Anupam Kher as an uncle this time.
- DirectorPuneet SiraStarsFardeen KhanKunal KemmuDia MirzaBest friends Jai and Veeru teams up together to nab the dreaded don Tejpal. In the process their friendship is tested. There are some major plot holes in this tale of an unlikely bromance between a car thief and a police officer but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
- DirectorVipul Amrutlal ShahStarsAkshay KumarAishwarya Rai BachchanAditya Roy KapoorA young man tries to revive his parents' wilting marriage by traveling to the 1970s when their romance was budding and make it bloom: something more complex than he expects.Well, perhaps not so unique after all... Basically Aditya Roy Kapoor is Marty McFly, Akshay Kumar is his downtrodden, geeky father George McFly. Marty gives him a makeover and suddenly daddy McFly becomes a commanding presence. Aishwarya Raj as Marty's mother is a supercilious lil bully before becoming a shopaholic. I understand Marty wants to be born but otherwise getting the parents hitched seems like a bad idea. Incidentally, daddy McFly seems to have aged over the years but Mommy McFly didn't. It may be colourful fun if you don't expect films to be original.
- DirectorPaul Mayeda BergesStarsAishwarya Rai BachchanDylan McDermottNitin GanatraAn immigrant in San Francisco brings Indian magic with her through spices. To keep the magic, she must never leave the spice store or touch another's skin. One day, a handsome architect bachelor enters her store. An English language movie with Aishwarya Raj, Dylan McDermott and Anupam Kher. It's a gorgeous movie. The obstacles to love didn't make much sense to me but then I'm not a spice wizard.
- DirectorJames DodsonStarsJesse MetcalfeSara FosterAnupam KherAn employee at an Indian call-center travels to San Francisco to be with a guy she falls for over the phone. An English language love story about an Indian call center worker and her American customer. We have some cultural conflict and Anupam Kher as the father. I don't like the end that much.
- DirectorGurinder ChadhaStarsMartin HendersonAishwarya Rai BachchanNadira BabbarA modern adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, that features the lives of four unmarried daughters in an Indian family.Austen in Bollywood style, with Aishwarya Raj and Anupam Kher. The Darcy character was a bit bland to me but overall an enjoyable experience.
- DirectorMira NairStarsNaseeruddin ShahLillete DubeyShefali ShahA stressed father, a bride-to-be with a secret, a smitten event planner, and relatives from around the world create much ado about the preparations for an arranged marriage in India.Directed by Mira Nair. An award-winning, partly English film about an eventful wedding with some happiness and some darker notes. I found it a little confusing at places but it was probably not the fault of the film as I was watching it with sketchy subtitles that translated most of the English dialogue into English but left out a lot of the other lines.
- DirectorGurinder ChadhaStarsParminder NagraKeira KnightleyJonathan Rhys MeyersTwo ambitious girls, despite their parents' wishes, have their hearts set on careers in professional football. An enjoyable English language film about a young girl's dreams. Featuring young Keira Knightley and Anupam Kher, who else.
- DirectorShaad AliStarsAbhishek BachchanPreity G ZintaBobby DeolA crazy love story full of lies, deceits and a complicated quadrangle where each one has to think quickly and dance around each other's emotions.Quite a nice movie. Preity Zinta is one of my favorite actresses in whatever she does. Abhishek Bachchan's character is a little annoying at first. Parts of the story are told in very dramatized scenes of flashback or imagination. Amitabh Bacchan as a gypsy singer who can get a flash mob going in the middle of the railway station. The soundtrack got rave reviews but I thought it was a little boring as it features the same song in several incarnations -it's a catchy item song but not that good.
- DirectorPriyadarshanStarsAkshay KumarGovindaParesh RawalThe members of a drama troupe fall in trouble when they are framed for a murder. Things go worse when they find their actress committing suicide, which is somehow linked with the murder. An entertaining comedy starring Govinda and Akshay Kumar.
- DirectorAnees BazmeeStarsAkshay KumarKatrina KaifOm PuriA comic caper about Happy Singh, a Punjabi villager who goes through a series of misadventures and eventually becomes the King of the Australian underworld.Okay to watch once. Akshay Kumar starring as an accidental don.
- DirectorPriyadarshanStarsAkshay KumarSuniel ShettyKatrina KaifTwo down on their luck men tries to kidnap a wealthy businesswoman's dog to demand a hefty ransom from her. Things goes haywire when the dog goes missing.Akshay Kumar starring as a long suffering servant-chauffeur who has a plan. Lots of stars here, the script could be funnier. The pace picks up after the interval when it becomes a mayhem of mistaken identities. I think I should have made an Excel chart of the hotel room numbers because I couldn't keep track.
- DirectorAtul AgnihotriStarsSalman KhanPreity G ZintaBhoomika ChawlaA wealthy man working in an advertising agency and a dedicated doctor fall in love and marry. When his wife dies, the devastated man must fulfil her last wishes.Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Bhumika Chawla in a story about love and loss and loving again. The filmmakers would have needed a medical advisor as the hospital parts are not the least bit believable but the parts with Preity in the beginning are cute and I like the music.
- DirectorVikram BhattStarsHrithik RoshanAmeesha PatelKiran KumarThe daughter of a rich criminal industrial tycoon falls in love with a college boy. The tycoon, what a surprise, objects...Some may think that anything with Hrithik is worth watching once for Hrithik but this plot has been done better in many other movies. The obstacles in the way of true love include a goon father, some gratuitous violence and funny dancing to extremely boring songs. Hrithik gets superhero powers after being left for dead, that's always medically interesting.
- DirectorRaj KanwarStarsSalman KhanPreity G ZintaRani MukerjiRaj is a struggling singer with big dreams who is still waiting for his big break. One night he witnesses an accident where a car spins out of control and lands on the tracks of an on-coming train. Raj runs over to the wreckage and rescues the occupant just in time. He takes her to the hospital and the girl's family are informed. The girl, Pooja Oberoi, survives but is in a vigil coma, a condition whereby she can hear and see everything but cannot speak nor move any part of her body. The Oberoi family is grateful to Raj and are led to believe that he is Pooja's groom, Romi. Raj is reluctant to accept this but then he changes his mind and accepts being the groom, as he has an agenda of his own and takes advantage of this accident to further his goals. But then he meets Pooja's best friend Jahnvi and falls in love with her. The situation is complicated even more when Pooja wakes up from the coma and begins to show feelings for Raj.The plot is a Salmanization of While You Were Sleeping, including dances, electric shocks and an opportunist's desire to become a pop star. It starts slowly and the way Salman's character treats the uncle is not endearing but the story picks up when Preity Zinta enters about an hour into the movie. I was well entertained but it would have been better if I had liked While You Were Sleeping less because I couldn't help comparing and this is more like a dramatized fairytale musicale than a story about real people subtly building relationships. SRK has a small but effective role.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsSalman KhanSushmita SenKatrina KaifSamir is in love with Sonia but has unfortunately lied to her that he was already married. When she wants to meet her wife,Samir approaches his dutiful nurse Naina to play 'wife'a drama that turns out into a comedy of errors.I watched this because I saw Genelia D'Souza say this was one of her favorite films in an interview. I'd seen Just Go With It before and it seemed awfully familiar, and it turns out they've both been adapted from an older play/ film called Cactus Flower. IMDB gives its genre as comedy/drama/romance but I don't consider this a romantic movie, Salman Khan's character is too much of an ass for romance. I liked the film mainly for the minor characters. Sohail Khan and Arshad Warsi are funny here, and the granny is great too.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsSalman KhanAkshay KumarPriyanka Chopra JonasSameer, fast at losing his temper is re-located to Goa where he falls in love with Rani. But Sameer's new roommate Sunny, has some plans of his own.Salman Khan's character has got a terrible, violent temper that always gets him in trouble, and they're trying to make comedy out of it. I am not sure he's ready to get married. Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra co-starring. Some of the minor characters are a little over the top.
- DirectorAbhinav KashyapStarsSalman KhanSonakshi SinhaSonu SoodA corrupt police officer faces challenges from his family, gangsters and politicians. If you're in the mood for some superheroish action sequences this is your movie. (Anupam Kher is here as well.)

When he returns back, Ankush tries his best to save his relationship.Abhay Deol stars as Ankush who helps a girl who is stranded in Delhi alone because her bridegroom didn't come to their wedding. The story is by Imtiaz Ali, the guy behind JWM, but it's nowhere near JWM in my opinion. Her character needs a little developing. I liked the end.
