The Next Big Genre: 5 Video Games That Should Be Movies
Since 2000 comic books have ruled the box office as the leading genre in hollywood blockbusters. Comic book films have taken a giant leap from their adolescent successes of the 80's and 90's to setting box office records today. Unfortunately, super hero films are beginning to hit a redundant stride. Marvel and DC comics are now beginning to produce reboots and sequels. This is always a clear indication that Hollywood is tapping out the genre and stretching for material. Within a few years audiences will grow weary of the same old stories, characters, and themes of comic books. Afterwards Hollywood studios will need to find a new realm of entertainment to make into films. Fortunately there is still one genre that has the potential for a new age of major Hollywood blockbusters; video games. Today's video games have evolved light years beyond the two-dimensional, 16-bit, recreational home entertainment of the 70's and 80's. With advanced computer software and hardware, award-winning stories and the most diverse gameplay options ever, the world of video games has become a multi-billion dollar industry with over a hundred million players and fans. Ranking third(behind movies and music) the next logical arena of video game entertainment is the big screen. A few studios have made poor attemps to make this happen in the past, i.e. Super Mario Brothers, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat. However with today's technology and the ever growing communities of dedicated gamers it's only a matter of time before video games get the Hollywood respect they deserve. Out of today's most sucessful franchises, here are five games that I think would be HUGE blockbuster material for the silver screen:
