- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.A Quiet Place is an intense, frightening and incredibly well-executed film in the same sort of vein as horror classic The Descent. The film has good, identifiable characters that you really care for, while pitting them against unimaginably brutal monsters. Really, there isn't much more I can say other than if you like horror, see this movie - it's sure to go down as a new, timeless classic.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.I don't know how the Russos manage to pull it off, but Infinity War works so much better than I could have possibly hoped. It isn't quite as tight as Civil War, but Infinity War succeeds as the level of emotional, climactic spectacle that only 10 years of Marvel's cinematic universe could achieve. That said, you need to be invested in this story for it to truly hit home, but if you are, then there really isn't another movie quite like it.
- DirectorBob PersichettiPeter RamseyRodney RothmanStarsShameik MooreJake JohnsonHailee SteinfeldTeen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.Into the Spider-verse is significantly better than it had any right to be, feeling far more like a comic book than just about any other film has. Its art style is absolutely gorgeous and the story is fantastic and heartwarming. If this is the sort of unique quality we can expect from Sony's Spider-man films going forward, I think that the character might finally be in good hands.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseHenry CavillVing RhamesEthan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.Fallout is, simply put, the best Mission: Impossible film in an already-stellar franchise. I've always preferred the original film over its sequels, but even I have to admit that this one has finally perfected the formula that the others had been building up for years. It ups the stakes and action sequences, while improving the franchise's storytelling and providing plenty of high-octane surprises along the way.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsChadwick BosemanMichael B. JordanLupita Nyong'oT'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.Civil War already showed us that Black Panther is a cool character, but it's in his solo outing that he really proves himself as perhaps the biggest badass in the MCU. Wakanda makes for a setting unlike any other in the Marvel universe and the film plays out almost like a James Bond movie at times with its political intrigue. The villains are also quite compelling, to the point where you will almost certainly question your loyalties eventually. While I don't think Civil War has been topped yet, Black Panther comes close and is definitely in the upper echelons of what the MCU has produced so far.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Hereditary is fantastic in so many ways - the performances are all amazing, the director and editor are clearly having a blast lurching from drawn out scenes of tension to cool shots and transitions, and the music is eerie. I think that the film's one big flaw though is that the "big reveal" in the final act undermines a lot of what made the film's story work as well. It does fit into the film's themes of the "curse afflicting the family", but it's disappointing compared to what had been set up before. Still, it's hard to really be too down on Hereditary considering how much else is top-notch and that my disappointment is just a personal preference.
- DirectorJimmy ChinElizabeth Chai VasarhelyiStarsAlex HonnoldTommy CaldwellJimmy ChinAlex Honnold faces the biggest challenge of his career, climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He pursues it Free Solo, which means climbing without a rope and alone.Free Solo is compelling enough as a documentary about what drives people to free climb and the toll this takes on their family and friends... but then you add in the ball-shriveling climax where Alex Honnold attempts to free solo up 3000ft of El Cap with stakes so high that you can feel the documentarians' own anxiety. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime films that you need to experience yourself.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsNatalie PortmanJennifer Jason LeighTessa ThompsonA biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply.Annihilation is a film which, for better or worse, demands multiple viewings to really appreciate. It plays out more like an arthouse film rather than a typical Hollywood sci-fi romp, meaning that you should be viewing it more symbolically rather than literally. If you do so, then Annihilation is a rather interesting and evocative tale about relationships, tragedy, and/or death. If you're just looking for something more disposable though, then you're likely going to find Annihilation confounding and unsatisfying.
- DirectorDuncan SkilesStarsDylan McDermottCharlie PlummerSamantha MathisA picture-perfect family is shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. The Clovehitch Killer is one of those movies that you can tell got filmed one way and then edited into the film we got. This is for better or worse in some ways, but thankfully The Clovehitch Killer is compulsively tense and watchable thanks to its great performances, fascinating premise, strong script and tragic ending.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTye SheridanOlivia CookeBen MendelsohnWhen the creator of a virtual reality called the OASIS dies, he makes a posthumous challenge to all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune and control of his world.Ready Player One feels, at times, like classic Spielberg with its emphasis on spectacle, a mostly whimsical story and buffoonish cartoon villain. It leans a bit too heavily on nostalgia at times, although this does not truly hinder your enjoyment - I saw it with a 60 year old who definitely did not get all the video game references, but who thought the film was great.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJoel EdgertonMatthias SchoenaertsBallerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.Red Sparrow is an intriguing but slow-burning spy thriller, in which the hero does not fight with guns or fists (for the most part) but with her mind and body. It can be genuinely unsettling at times and you really don't know which side our heroine is on at any time. Jennifer Lawrence puts in a strong and empowering performance, on a similar level to her Oscar-worthy roles (hell, I was worried that the Russian accent would be distracting, but it's fine). Honestly, not sure why this film did not do better with critics, I thought it was solid.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsAlden EhrenreichWoody HarrelsonEmilia ClarkeDuring an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.Solo is about as good as anyone could have hoped, and certainly better than most people expected it to be. I felt like Alden Ehrenreich did a good job stepping into such a beloved character, although he is obviously no Harrison Ford. Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson also put in great performances. While the film itself is pretty unsubstantial within the Star Wars canon, it is definitely a fun space romp in a similar vein to A New Hope.
- DirectorJulius AveryStarsJovan AdepoWyatt RussellMathilde OllivierA small group of American soldiers find horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.I was worried that a Nazi-zombies movie in the year 2018 might feel somewhat distasteful, but thankfully Overlord strikes a respectful enough tone while providing a grisly good time for action-horror fans. It's just a straightforward, solidly made b-movie thriller.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsBryan CranstonKoyu RankinEdward NortonSet in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search of his lost dog.Isle of Dogs features as much of Wes Anderson's trademark style and whimsical humour as you would expect, with a few twists (mainly relating to the clever takes on the Japanese/English language split). I feel like this doesn't reach the heights of Anderson's best work though, mainly due to its second half ignores most of the characters we've been on this journey with and instead focuses on the relationship between the 2 main characters - thankfully that core is still strong so this movie doesn't collapse as a result, but it does make the ending feel unsatisfying. Honestly, the biggest flaw with Isle of Dogs might just be that The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Anderson's previous animated film, was so good that it just makes this project have a hard time measuring up.
- DirectorAdam Bhala LoughStarsDaryle Lamont JenkinsRichard SpencerMark PotokIn the first year of Donald Trump's presidency, Daryle Lamont Jenkins, an Antifa activist, combats the rise of the alt-right movement, while Richard Spencer, an alt-right leader, fights to gain ground, culminating in a tragic showdown in Charlottesville.Alt-Right is a decent documentary if you don't know much about the alt-right or the current state of white supremacy, or if maybe you think that antifa is just as bad as the KKK. If you are more familiar with the subject then it isn't exactly going to be revolutionary. However, the last 15 minutes or so are gripping, with footage shot on the ground from Charlottesville portraying just how nasty the fight between fascism and the people can be.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable. You probably know whether you'll like Deadpool 2 or not based on whether you liked the original. It's basically the same idea, although in my opinion it executes its humour much less effectively. On the other hand, the action sequences are more kinetic, but the humour is the main draw for Deadpool in my opinion - when that aspect of the film is weaker, the whole product suffers in my opinion.
- DirectorHiroyuki SeshitaKôbun ShizunoStarsMamoru MiyanoTakahiro SakuraiKana HanazawaHumanity, their alien allies, and Godzilla all enter their endgame as the powerful destructive entity known as Ghidorah arrives on Earth. After the disappointing City on the Edge of Battle, The Planet Eater caps off the Godzilla anime trilogy in a emotional and thematic high note. I'll admit, the first half of this film was really turning me off with hamfisted and cliche anime melodrama, but as soon as Ghidorah shows up this film goes into overdrive. Some people might be disappointed that the ensuing battle between Ghidorah and Godzilla is underwhelming, but the focus is instead on the emotional and philosophical battle between the hero and villain, which is handled very well. It makes for a really compelling and exciting conclusion to this wildly inconsistent trilogy, although it is still dragged down a bit by how overwrought everything can be at times.
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJamie Lee CurtisJudy GreerAndi MatichakLaurie Strode confronts her long-time foe, Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.As far as slasher sequels go, Halloween is better than most. However, I was still hoping that this movie would be better than it ended up being. It's well made and has some fantastic moments, but it all just feels like the story its telling could have done with a bit more... ambition I guess. Still, it's reasonably good and easily near the top of its franchise.
- DirectorGerard McMurrayStarsY'lan NoelLex Scott DavisJoivan WadeAmerica's third political party, the New Founding Fathers of America, comes to power and conducts an experiment: no laws for 12 hours on Staten Island. No one has to stay on the island, but $5,000 is given to anyone who does. The First Purge is probably the strongest Purge entry yet. Anarchy is still definitely the funnest, but The First Purge aims to be a much more serious entry, leaning hardest into the series' political elements while also doing the best job of justifying them. The film doesn't hit quite hard enough, but it is a pretty solid film overall. My biggest critique is that the film doesn't do enough to establish that people seem to actually think The Purge is a good thing in this universe, leaning far too hard into the NFFA's role in the "festivities".
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonHolly HunterSarah VowellThe Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.Considering that it has been 14 years since the last film, you'd expect that when they finally brought back The Incredibles, they'd do so with an iron-clad script. Unfortunately, I was really let down by the story in The Incredibles 2 - there are lots of disparate elements but they never really come together to make a cohesive whole. Luckily the action sequences are quite fun, but I'm not sure that the final product was worth pulling the Incredibles out of their long retirement.
- DirectorRoar UthaugStarsAlicia VikanderDominic WestWalton GogginsLara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she discovers the island where her father, Lord Richard Croft disappeared. The first hour of Tomb Raider is great, giving us some strong action sequences and a good leading performance from Alicia Vikander. However, the second half leaves much to be desired, mainly due to an unfortunate narrative turn which derails the plot and never really recovers its balance. All that said though, Tomb Raider is definitely one of the best video game movies ever made and is certainly a worthwhile and fun time at the movies.
- DirectorDaniel J. ClarkStarsMark K. SargentPatti SargentHannalore Gerling-DunsmoreMeet real Flat Earthers, a small but growing contingent of people who firmly believe in a conspiracy to suppress the truth that the Earth is flat.Behind the Curve is an interesting look into the bewildering world of the Flat Earth movement and a snapshot into the lives of some of the people who inhabit it. It goes to great lengths to humanize the people it covers (to the point where it feels like this movie's main point is a Mark Sargent and Patricia Steere shipping fanfic), although it doesn't pull punches when it comes to refuting their misguided (and at times abhorrent) beliefs. All-in-all, Behind the Curve is an enjoyable documentary, but it feels like it's mostly just skimming the surface of this topic.
- DirectorBert MarcusStarsKirill BichutskyHailey BieberAmanda CernySocial media stars Paris Hilton, Josh Ostrovsky, Brittany Furlan and Kirill Bichutsky hustle to build online empires - and face the pitfalls of fame. The American Meme is an unintentionally depressing watch as the film takes us through the highs and lows of influencer culture and how it is destroying peoples' lives. Perhaps the most interesting aspect is how the film exonerates Paris Hilton. Formerly the most hated celebrity of her era, Hilton gets her own arc here, showing that she's far smarter than most people give her credit and has matured since her socialite hey-day. Unfortunately, the other figures in the documentary aren't nearly as compelling, with Kirill Bichutsky coming across as truly loathsome despite his best efforts to humanize himself.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddEvangeline LillyMichael PeñaAs Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.Ant-man and The Wasp is a film which is clearly intended to be little more than breezy fun, but this feels really strange in a time when superhero films are more serious and emotive. It ends up making this film feel throw-away in comparison, it never feels like there are any stakes and I didn't really care about the characters that much. Again, it's all about having fun and the film pulls that off for sure, but something a bit more substantial would have been appreciated.
- DirectorSilas HowardStarsClaire DanesJim ParsonsOctavia SpencerThe loving parents of a four-year-old must come to terms with the fact that their child is gay.A Kid Like Jake has some interesting ideas, but it doesn't really capitalize on them. The film plays out like a slice of life, which interesting but doesn't make for the most compelling story. Also, Jake himself isn't really all that important to the plot, rather the film is just focused on his parents and how they react to his desire to be a princess and what that might mean, which is a bit of a missed opportunity in my opinion. Oh, and it's really weird seeing Jim Parsons playing someone other than Sheldon.
- DirectorAri SandelStarsAdam DevineAlexandra DaddarioShelley HennigNoah meets Avery at a Halloween party and falls in love but gets friend-zoned. 3 years later, she's engaged to someone else. Noah returns in a time machine to fix things. When I saw the premise of this film, I expected it to be godawful trash. I mean, it's Groundhog Day, but with a guy trying to manipulate his way out of the "friend zone". Thank God the film does not play this premise straight, and by the end it actually has a bit of a sweet lesson to teach (if overly simplistic and not nearly comprehensive). However, the trip there may be excruciating if you can't stand Adam Devine's "over the top" brand of humour, and it's not like the film doesn't telegraph where it's going quite quickly. Certainly not awful, nor as bad as I was expecting, but not exactly something that hits as hard as it would like to either.
- DirectorStefano SollimaStarsBenicio Del ToroJosh BrolinIsabela MercedThe drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro.Sicaro: Day of the Soldado suffers greatly for being only a shade of what the original was. In fact, it straight-up rips off several sequences from the original. It also doesn't really seem to have anything to say in its politically charged narrative, other than American politicians will screw around with other nations and then dump them in an even worse mess on a whim, although I'm not entirely sure that this was meant to be a conscious theme. Like a lot of things in this movie, it just seems to be part of an effort to make the story more generic and watered down. Overall, Day of the Soldado is still an above-average action flick, but it's nowhere near the original in any department.
- DirectorHiroyuki SeshitaKôbun ShizunoStarsMamoru MiyanoTakahiro SakuraiKana HanazawaHumanity's desperate battle to reclaim the Earth from Godzilla continues. The key to defeating the King of the Monsters may be Mechagodzilla, a robotic weapon thought to have been lost nearly 20,000 years ago.The second part in this anime left me a bit disappointed. Part 1 succeeded mainly due to its interesting twist on the Godzilla mythos, and its totally badass central monster on which the entire plot revolves. Part 2 is weaker, mainly because Godzilla itself doesn't really factor into the plot until the last third of the film, meaning that we have to focus on the drama of the uninteresting human characters. This film is also notably more traditionally-anime, which you can take as you will.
- DirectorMichael MasonStarsMegan AlexanderAdeeja Rochele AndersonCarrlyn BatheNow the late 2010s, an aging Reverend Dave faces cultural and social backlash, including having his church burned down during a protest, and he is antagonized by atheists, leftists, liberal college students, the school board, and rioters.Compared to the other films in its series, A Light in Darkness is a huge step in the right direction and actually has some moments of great filmmaking. However, the film ultimately undermines the message it seems to want to make by continuing to cling to a partisan viewpoint which seems to be at odds with its inclusive message.
- DirectorBradley WalshStarsKat GrahamQuincy BrownEthan PeckA struggling but talented photographer inherits an antique holiday advent calendar, the contents of which seem to predict the future. Will this magical calendar lead her to love this holiday season? What can I say? This is a bog standard low budget Christmas romantic comedy. The only pluses I can say are that the actors are all quite talented and it makes at least one surprising twist on the usual formula these films take.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsTom HardyMichelle WilliamsRiz AhmedA failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.Venom is such a weird movie, caught in a weird limbo between Tom Hardy's Nicholas-Cage-esque acting, a plot which is frankly stupid, and a few "meh" action sequences. At least Venom isn't the embarrassing edge-lord that I was expecting they'd aim for, but the resulting film is just a sub-par mess regardless.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardRafe SpallWhen the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.I'm not a big fan of the first Jurassic World, but at least it was very entertaining, even if it was excessively stupid at times. Fallen Kingdom, on the other hand, seems to be aiming for loftier ideals and to take the franchise in a new direction, but it fails to truly capitalize on any of its ambitions, instead delivering a film which is just plain bland. Seriously, I didn't care about any of the characters (not that it matters that much anyway, the film is chocked full of cannon fodder) and the action fails to excite beyond maybe one or two short sequences. I can appreciate the attempt to take the franchise in a new direction, but if this is the best they can do, then maybe Jurassic World truly should go extinct.
- DirectorRob CohenStarsToby KebbellMaggie GraceRyan KwantenThieves attempt a massive heist against the U.S. Treasury as a Category 5 hurricane approaches one of its Mint facilities.Handled right, The Hurricane Heist's insane premise SHOULD be the blueprint for an amazing, over-the-top action film in the vein of Fast & Furious. However, The Hurricane Heist bungles right out of the gate by not even being about pulling off the heist, but rather stopping it (turning this into a lame Die Hard in a Hurricane). The premise doesn't even go as far over the top as it should either, it takes things much too seriously and the hurricane is mostly just backdrop during a series of boring shootouts.
- DirectorJames McTeigueStarsGabrielle UnionBilly BurkeRichard CabralA woman fights to protect her family during a home invasion.Breaking In could be a decent Panic-Room-meets-Die-Hard mash-up if the script was better. Instead, we get one-dimensional characters with no development (heroine is suddenly an action hero out of nowhere because she's a desperate mother, bad guy is discount Hans Gruber, etc) and a series of cheap, made-for-TV movie level action beats. It does start to pick up a bit in the third act when some surprises happen and the villains stop being such bumbling dumb-dumbs, but by then it's too late to truly salvage the film.
- DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsClive OwenAfiya BennettMorgan AllenIn a world without anonymity or crime, a detective meets a woman who threatens their security.Anon certainly has interesting and timely ideas at its core and could have made for a seriously great film if executed better. However, the film is at times ham-fisted with its dialogue and its portrayal of the future and the plot does not make sense under scrutiny (especially the big twist at the end, to say nothing of the actual process involved in hacking a person, which might as well be techno-magic for all we're shown). It's too bad, there's definitely a decent core here, but Anon never really reaches that potential.
- DirectorHèctor Hernández VicensStarsSophie SkeltonJohnathon SchaechJeff GumA small group of military personnel and survivalists dwell in an underground bunker as they seek to find a cure in a world overrun by zombies. This movie was... actually not quite as bad as I was expecting. It's nowhere near worthy of being a Day of the Dead remake, and it mostly is content to just be a shitty zombie film, but it has slightly more ambition than your average low-budget zombie flick. The zombie stalker angle is also weirdly topical, although it would have been better as more of a Romero-style metaphor.
- DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsLiam NeesonVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonAn insurance salesman/ex-cop is caught up in a life-threatening conspiracy during his daily commute home.Sigh, the refreshing excitement of Taken is long behind us and with all the crappy action films Liam Neeson has been subjected to, it's time to question whether it was ever worth it. To be fair, The Commuter begins intriguingly, setting up a mystery involving a sinister, all-knowing conspiracy. However, a thriller like this is going to live-or-die based on the payoffs, so the script has to be fantastic in order for it to come togethr well. Predictably, The Commuter just straight-up makes no sense, from its explanation of the events in the movie, to its preposterously stupid climactic action scene. As a result, there's basically no reason to watch this unless you can literally watch a movie without thinking in the slightest.
- DirectorBrian HensonStarsMelissa McCarthyElizabeth BanksMaya RudolphWhen the puppet cast of a '90s children's TV show begin to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case. The Happytime Murders is just... stupid. Literally the only original thing that it has going for it is the puppet gimmick, but it quickly turns into a one-note joke which is only occasionally fun. Like a puppet without a master, the rest of the film is nowhere near good enough to hold itself up.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsBoyd HolbrookTrevante RhodesJacob TremblayWhen a young boy accidentally triggers the universe's most lethal hunters' return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled scientist can prevent the end of the human race. The Predator is an incredibly messy film, to the point where it's hard to care about any of the characters or events happening throughout, not to mention that it takes a huge dump on any fans of the franchise. I do appreciate that it tries to do something a little different with the Predator formula, evolving our understanding of the Predators in an interesting way, but for every interesting idea there are a half dozen which are incredibly stupid. The new bounty hunter Predator is almost all-business, and isn't nearly as interesting as the classic honour-bound Predators, or even the sadistic Super Predators from the last film in the franchise. This new Predator massacres anyone that gets in its way. That said, about the only good thing about The Predator is when the title creatures are tearing people apart, but those moments are few and far between.
- DirectorSteven C. MillerStarsSylvester StalloneDave BautistaXiaoming HuangYears after he fought his way out of an inescapable prison, Ray Breslin has organized a new top-notch security force. But when one of his team members goes missing, Breslin must return to the hell he once escaped from.I actually really enjoyed the first Escape Plan, it was a lot of fun and so surely the sequel would capture some of that essence, right? Holy shit was I ever wrong. Escape Plan 2: Hades is so ineptly put together that I can't believe that Stallone and Dave Bautista signed on. There might have been a decent movie in here somewhere, but it's totally wasted on a poorly shot and horrendous, incoherently edited film.
- DirectorKyle NewacheckStarsAdam DevineAnders HolmBlake AndersonThree friends are on the verge of getting their video game financed when their benefactor is taken hostage by terrorists.Netflix drops another stinker on our laps. I thought that the premise sounded intriguing but within the first 5 minutes we've got incredibly cringey semen and closeted gay jokes, which make up the bulk of this film's content. There are a few laughs to be had, especially when the film really does push the envelope, but for the most part Game Over, Man! is either lowest-common-denominator levels of cringe or outright offensively bad.
- DirectorJulius OnahStarsGugu Mbatha-RawDavid OyelowoDaniel BrühlOrbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.I used to use The Purge as my baseline for movie disappointment, but I think that The Cloverfield Paradox just smashed that. To put it simply, in The Cloverfield Paradox, shit just happens for no explained reason. Deal with it. Now, this might actually start to make sense when they take the conceits of this film and then apply them to future movies, but that doesn't make The Cloverfield Paradox a good movie now, or later.
