More of what you'd expect and then some.
- DirectorGabriel AbrantesDaniel SchmidtStarsCarloto CottaCleo TavaresAnabela MoreiraA fallen soccer superstar vows to adopt a refugee child, while becoming the naive unwitting centerpiece in in a bizarre plot to Make Portugal Great Again.A thoroughly bizarre yet always entertaining mish-mosh of genres and ideas that shouldn't work as well as it does. That said, I'm not sure who this is for.
- DirectorGary RossStarsSandra BullockCate BlanchettAnne HathawayDebbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's annual Met Gala.Totally lightweight and lacking in "oomph", but it's slick, stylish and gleefully entertaining with some neat surprises.

As Manny and Joel grow into versions of their father and Ma dreams of escape, Jonah embraces an imagined world all on his own.Considerably more captivating on an aesthetic and stylistic level than its storytelling, but a raw, terrifically acted and compelling coming of age film nonetheless.
- DirectorAnne FontaineStarsFinnegan OldfieldGrégory GadeboisVincent MacaigneA young man runs away from his family to become an actor.A dark, sad and emotionally complex film that I would dare compare to Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. It's a compelling coming of age story with a terrific performance from Finnegan Oldfield.

- DirectorRob MarshallStarsEmily BluntLin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawA few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives. It pummeled me into liking it. But I really do like it - it's charming as hell, Emily Blunt puts the film in her pocket and walks away with it. It's an exuberant piece of entertainment worthy of the original.
- DirectorTravis KnightStarsHailee SteinfeldJorge Lendeborg Jr.John CenaOn the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. On the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, Charlie Watson discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.Yes, it is the best Transformers film. - DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotSix years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph," Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure. Not only an extremely inventive, colorful, entertaining and surprisingly moving follow-up to the original but incredibly smart and insightful about internet culture as well.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.Perhaps too overstuffed for its own good, but still manages to set itself apart from the crop of comic-book movies with over-the-top violence, smart comedy and a surprising amount of devotion to its characters.
- DirectorBrad PeytonStarsDwayne JohnsonNaomie HarrisMalin AkermanWhen three different animals become infected with a dangerous pathogen, a primatologist and a geneticist team up to stop them from destroying Chicago. It's extremely violent and completely bonkers.

- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsEwan McGregorHayley AtwellBronte CarmichaelA working-class family man, Christopher Robin, encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.A very melancholy film - more for adults than it is for kids. I found it incredibly moving, if a little schmaltzy.
- DirectorYarrow CheneyScott MosierStarsBenedict CumberbatchCameron SeelyRashida JonesA grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.
- DirectorChris WeitzStarsOscar IsaacBen KingsleyMélanie LaurentA team of secret agents sets out to track down the Nazi officer who masterminded the Holocaust.Works almost solely because of the performances seeing as the script is rather conventional.
- DirectorAva DuVernayStarsStorm ReidOprah WinfreyReese WitherspoonAfter the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.Innocent and earnest - perhaps to a fault. It's beautiful to look at, entertaining, moving, the performances are terrific and it sets itself apart from its blockbuster brethren in a new and exciting way.
- DirectorLynne RamsayStarsJoaquin PhoenixJudith RobertsEkaterina SamsonovA traumatized veteran unafraid of violence tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what could be his death trip or his awakening.

If you want to take a vacation, keep driving past this place.

- DirectorSusanna NicchiarelliStarsTrine DyrholmJohn Gordon SinclairAnamaria MarincaThe last year of singer Nico's life, as she tours and grapples with addiction and personal demons.Bleak and captivating portrait of an interesting artist that mostly works thanks to a stellar lead performance by Trine Dyrholm.
- DirectorAnnemarie van de MondStarsMajd MardoJosha StradowskiJenny Arean6 time Award winning romantic comedy about two young men, from mixed backgrounds, falling love ...and their clashes with their overbearing mothers. It’s super lightweight but just sweet enough (and short enough) to be likeable.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsRami MalekLucy BoyntonGwilym LeeThe story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).Too conventional for its own good, but it succeeds in quieter and more intimate moments. Rami Malek gives one of the year's best performances.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsAlden EhrenreichWoody HarrelsonEmilia ClarkeDuring an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.A fun but unsubstantial adventure flick that tells us nothing we didn't already know about the titular character.
- DirectorDoug MurphyStarsMatt RyanLaura BaileyRobin Atkin DownesA decade after a tragic mistake, Chas Chandler and occult investigator John Constantine set out to cure Chas's daughter, Trish, from a demonically induced coma.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTye SheridanOlivia CookeBen MendelsohnWhen the creator of a virtual reality called the OASIS dies, he makes a posthumous challenge to all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune and control of his world.A really fun movie with a horrible script and a bloated running time.
- DirectorSusanna FogelStarsJustin TherouxKate McKinnonBlanka Györfi-TóthBest friends Audrey and Morgan unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of them discovers that the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.It doesn't juggle the brutal action violence and broad comedy in an entirely successful way, but Kate McKinnon steals the show yet again and offers a surprising amount of emotional depth in her performance.
- DirectorMadeleine SamiJackie van BeekStarsMadeleine SamiJackie van BeekJames RollestonFor the right price, BFFs Jen and Mel will ruthlessly end any romance. But when one grows a conscience, it threatens to derail their relationship.I thought I was going to hate it. It's pretty funny - not really funny, but pretty funny.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.
- DirectorAlice RohrwacherStarsAdriano TardioloAgnese GrazianiAlba RohrwacherAn unceasingly kind Italian peasant and his family are blatantly exploited by a tobacco baroness.I like the first half a lot, and then it kinda lost me. Not to get into spoilers, but the film is a form of allegory, and once the allegory becomes clear, the film unfortunately becomes much less interesting.
- DirectorViktor JakovleskiEcstatic ritual, danger and the absolute beauty of fireworks.A beautifully shot, if somewhat disjointed and not particularly deep documentary.
- DirectorEtienne KallosStarsBrent VermeulenAlex van DykJuliana VenterSouth Africa, Free State region, isolated stronghold to the Afrikaans white ethnic minority culture. In this conservative farming territory obsessed with strength and masculinity, Janno is different, secretive, emotionally frail. One day his fiercely-religious mother brings home Pieter, a hardened street orphan she wants to save, and asks Janno to make this stranger into his brother. The two boys start a fight for power, heritage, and parental love.An unsympathetic and bleak film that is equal parts compelling, tense and unpleasant to watch.
- DirectorJason T. GaffneyStarsJason T. GaffneyKevin HeldChopper BernetAnalysis Paralysis is an LGBTQ romantic comedy about the intersection of imagination and anxiety, and the courage to reach for love. The story begins when Tyler O'Conner, a young gay author, visits a therapist and discovers that he suffers from an anxiety disorder commonly called "Analysis Paralysis" - an inability to take action without imagining the ways that each possible choice could go wrong. The problem is that, unchecked, the condition will lead Tyler into a state of complete inaction. To confront the disorder, Tyler decides to fight through his anxiety and ask his cute neighbor, Shane, out for coffee. Despite a flurry of imagined disasters, the date goes well, and Shane and Tyler ultimately become involved. Against all odds, the relationship moves forward, but not without every step of the way - sex, moving in together, and meeting Shane's parents - preceded by an avalanche of negative, albeit hilarious, fantasies. Finally, convinced that Shane is leaving as a result of an uncomfortable interaction with Shane's mom and dad, Tyler steels himself for what he sees as the inevitable rejection. But Shane has other plans.
- DirectorAndrew FlemingStarsSteve CooganPaul RuddJesse LukenA bickering gay couple must suddenly deal with the unexpected task of raising a 10-year-old boy.Teeters into maudlin territory a little too often, and struggles balancing different tones, but the two leads have great chemistry and the film is light and amusing enough to forgive its flaws.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsTom HardyMichelle WilliamsRiz AhmedA failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.Stupid and unbearable, until it becomes a weird pseudo-rom-com. Entertaining, if mostly for all the wrong reasons.
- DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaAmber HeardWillem DafoeArthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land.Bloated and silly, but never boring.
- DirectorEli RothStarsJack BlackCate BlanchettOwen VaccaroA young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt aids his magical uncle in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world.A perfectly serviceable diversion if not much more.
- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKi Hong LeeKaya ScodelarioYoung hero Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure for a deadly disease known as "The Flare".
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddEvangeline LillyMichael PeñaAs Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

- DirectorStewart WadeStarsLeah McKendrickPatrick ZellerMatt PascuaA young woman diagnosed with cancer tries to play matchmaker between her soon-to-be-widowed husband and her bisexual twin brother.
- DirectorRoar UthaugStarsAlicia VikanderDominic WestWalton GogginsLara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she discovers the island where her father, Lord Richard Croft disappeared.Better than the Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider by a smidge. Lara Croft feels like a human being who suffers physical consequences when she - say, collides with trees out in the jungle. It's ruined by shameless franchise building plot mechanics.
- DirectorDustin FeneleyStarsLuciane BuchananKieran CharnockJoel FiliIn a cold and remote landscape, two strangers struggle to repair their broken pasts. It simply meanders too much until it doesn't, and I'm not sure the two leads are given enough to be able to carry a film where so little happens. Quite disappointed.
- DirectorChristian RiversStarsHera HilmarRobert SheehanHugo WeavingIn a post-apocalyptic world where cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive, two people meet in London and try to stop a conspiracy. It's a complete mess - the film has some interesting ideas and pretty cool world-building, if only it were in the service of a better story and more interesting characters.
- DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsJason StathamBingbing LiRainn WilsonA group of scientists exploring the Marianas Trench encounter the largest marine predator that has ever existed - the Megalodon.Much closer in tone to something like Jurassic World than Sharknado, and not quite the fun schlock that the marketing promises, but still fun nonetheless.
- DirectorBenjamin GilmourStarsSam SmithMohammad MosamKefayat Lag HumaniFormer Australian soldier, Mike Wheeler, returns to Afghanistan, seeking redemption from the family of a civilian man he killed during the war. It's kind of a snooze. It means well, but good intentions can't save the bland storytelling.
- DirectorLucrecia MartelStarsDaniel Giménez CachoLola DueñasMatheus NachtergaeleBased on the novel by Antonio Di Benedetto written in 1956, on Don Diego de Zama, a Spanish officer of the seventeenth century settled in Asunción, who awaits his transfer to Buenos Aires. It's interesting, and has a weird sense of humor about it, but it isn't very compelling.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonDan FoglerGellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.A film that is missing a second act arguably should be worse, but I was never bored.
- DirectorSteven S. DeKnightStarsJohn BoyegaScott EastwoodCailee SpaenyJake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.Lacks the sense of perspective and scale offered by its predecessor - the Jaegers feel more like Transformers this time around, and it's also a product of shameless franchise building. So half fun and half terrible.
- DirectorJames FoleyStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanEric JohnsonAnastasia and Christian get married, but Jack Hyde continues to threaten their relationship.More unintentional humor, more inconsistent and poorly structured dramatic tension. Not quite as amusing as its predecessor but amusing nonetheless.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardRafe SpallWhen the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. It's an improvement over its predecessor in some ways and a step backwards in others. For all its flaws, Fallen Kingdom is kind of fun - in all the wrong ways.
- DirectorJohn StevensonStarsJohnny DeppJames McAvoyEmily BluntGarden gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet recruit renowned detective Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden ornaments.Barely tolerable. Something amusing to watch when you’re sick on the couch with a cold.
- DirectorTim van DammenStarsAnton TennetJonny BrughHetty Gaskell-HahnJohn steals money and a bracelet/temporal dislocator from a Chinese antiques shop. Fleeing, he triggers the device and goes minutes back in time. The time travels result in new Johns and they form the Mega Time Squad. If you're easily amused (and I mean VERY EASILY) - you'll love it. Or I'm just a Scrooge who hates fun.
- DirectorOl ParkerStarsLily JamesAmanda SeyfriedMeryl StreepFive years after the events of Mamma Mia! (2008), Sophie prepares for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna as she learns more about her mother's past.I was cheated by you, movie. Cheated.
- DirectorPaco PlazaStarsSandra EscacenaBruna GonzálezClaudia PlacerMadrid, 1991. A teen girl finds herself besieged by an evil supernatural force after she played Ouija with two classmates.Completely devoid of scares and ruined by an irritating soundtrack.
