- DirectorFatih AkinStarsNuman AcarAdam BousdoukosDiane KrugerKatja's life collapses after the deaths of her husband and son in a bomb attack. After a time of mourning and injustice, Katja seeks revenge.I love realistic movies and this one is almost too real. Diane Kruger gives a extraordinary performance worth an Oscar. The emotions she plays feel real and you become a part of the story. I love every detail of the story and the dynamic it develops.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit. The movie deals with so many different aspects and types of discrimination without being forced about it. The main plot is very hard and emotional, but the movie takes many turns to become thrilling, funny or just wtf. It's totally unexpected with a great cast.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.Almost perfect musical. In every way the production here is on point. All is thought through and manages to take you on a journey to a dream like world, which LaLaLand is. Nice music, great acting and lovely designed-a masterpiece.
- DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsKumail NanjianiZoe KazanHolly HunterPakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings. From all the romantic comedies I watched this was the most interesting of all. The typical story line is spiced with cultural conflicts, sickness and tries to transmit a true image of how love goes and works. A very good try and touching story which makes you laugh as well.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. His best work so far. He demands much from the cast and they all deliver. The story, for me it's an biblical interpretation with comments on actual environment situations, is highly metaphoric, intelligent and mind blowing. I love the ideas of Him and mother and how they work out in contact with humans. Perfect!
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California. The movie just got much heart. I think every one who is in the situation of growing up, moving out, making future plans and enjoying youth can relate to this fabulous Ladybird as parents can to her mother. Like a bird the movie just flies and every moment is enjoyable.
- DirectorRungano NyoniStarsMaggie MulubwaHenry B.J. PhiriNancy MuriloIn a remote Zambian community a girl is denounced as a witch and sent on a trajectory of exploitation, as a tethered member of a witches' camp, a witch for hire and a tourist exhibit.I was shocked by this one on a complete different level than by any other film here. The story is weird and not logical, but if you let yourself into it, you will get some many ideas and meanings behind this one it's hard to analyze. Especially the parts where tourism is portrayed are deeply moving.
- DirectorPaul KingStarsBen WhishawHugh GrantHugh BonnevillePaddington, now happily settled with the Brown family and a popular member of the local community, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen.Nearly perfect childrens movie. The all star cast fills the very fine constructed characters with life and creates a wonderful atmosphere. The world there seems just perfect. The bear as main figure brings me to laugh every time and the messages are easy to understand but not so easy that adults get bored. Family time
- DirectorNicolas PesceStarsKika MagalhãesWill BrillOlivia BondIn their secluded farmhouse, a mother (a former surgeon) teaches her daughter, Francisca, anatomy, and how life and death are not to be feared. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of their family life, and deeply traumatises Francisca, but also awakens curiosities. Years later, Francisca clings to her increasingly distant father, but the trauma she sustained reawaken when her desire to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form.A very silent and hold back horror, which just builds on suspense and the wonderful played leading lady. Kika is extraordinary and will be remembered as one of the worst movie monsters in cinematic history. Her performance is on the same page as Hannibal Lector or Norman Bates.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world. The philosophic story is wonderful, every detail behind this screenplay is very moving and touching. The actual story which takes place though has some holes and is not as good to relate to. But the visuals here are working perfect.
- DirectorFrancis LeeStarsJosh O'ConnorAlec SecareanuGemma JonesSpring. Yorkshire. Young farmer Johnny Saxby numbs his daily frustrations with binge drinking and casual sex, until the arrival of a Romanian migrant worker for lambing season ignites an intense relationship that sets Johnny on a new path. This romantic movie takes it's time to let it's couple slowly develop and making their way. And it's good, because the reasons behind the actions become more and more plausible.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town. How a box office horror should look like. The jump scares work for me and the dramatic and thriller elements between are well done. Especially when you have in mind this the first part it makes you begging for part two. The clown is scary as hell.
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsNicole KidmanKirsten DunstElle FanningThe unexpected arrival of a wounded Union soldier at a girls school in Virginia during the American Civil War leads to jealousy and betrayal.I love how detailed the work here is. From the dresses, the production design to the dialogues everything is though through and nothing here happens without being planned. The actors use this atmosphere to play their parts authentic.
- DirectorKenneth LonerganStarsCasey AffleckMichelle WilliamsKyle ChandlerA depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies. The drama is very dark, very heavy and very east coast. The movie manages to deliver the mood of the characters over the city towards the audience. It's very depressing, but cinema shouldn't always be funny and happy.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsNatalie PortmanJennifer Jason LeighTessa ThompsonA biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply. This movie is placed that high because of it's visuals. It's so creative and beautiful what the crew build and invented, that it makes up for the plot holes. But I like the idea behind the metaphors.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsDane DeHaanJason IsaacsMia GothAn ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps, but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem.I love the opening and building. You never really know what is going on, where the plot will take and how this turns out-everything seems possible to happen. The final reveal is disappointing and won't hold up to the build, but overall it's still good.
- DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsMichael FassbenderAlicia VikanderRachel WeiszA lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat. The child plot is something new in a romantic drama. There are two different stories packed in one, but it works for most of the time. The beginning could be a bit faster.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsEmma WatsonDan StevensLuke EvansA selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner.Nice try on this classic. It brings childhood memories back and the addings to the plot are nice. It's enjoyable.
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsTimothée ChalametArmie HammerMichael StuhlbargIn 1980s Italy, romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.I love the last 30 minutes. The emotional building here is packing and very touching. The acting also is on point. But the build up takes way too long, the movie starts when it's almost over. Mystery of Love is a great song by the way.
- DirectorClaire DenisStarsJuliette BinocheXavier BeauvoisPhilippe KaterineIsabelle, Parisian artist, divorced mother, is looking for love, true love at last.Juliette Binoche plays perfect here and really finds the fine lines between the aspects of her character, but the movie feels long. It's made very boring.
- DirectorMichael HanekeStarsIsabelle HuppertJean-Louis TrintignantMathieu KassovitzA well-to-do French family deals with a series of setbacks and crises. After Amour I expected more. But the creation of a rich french family, without any real problems (the adults off course) who simply don't get their life together. Could be a great premise, but you don't get the characters so you don't really want to see them.
- DirectorRadu JudeStarsTeodor CorbanMihai ComanoiuToma CuzinSet in early 19th century Romania, a policeman, Costandin, is hired by a nobleman to find a Gypsy slave who has run away from his estate after having an affair with his wife. The story is very interesting, but the movie fails to deliver it consequently and with suspense. There are great parts and other you wish to end immediately.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJoel EdgertonMatthias SchoenaertsBallerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.I thought the movie would focus less on the sexy vamp action heroine and more on a bad ass woman, but no. Also the images of russia are very misfitting and the good USA, bad Russia story line belongs in the cold war, not in modern days. Just clichés here.
- DirectorRuben ÖstlundStarsClaes BangElisabeth MossDominic WestA prestigious Stockholm museum's chief art curator finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit.I respect the artsy attempts behind this one, but it's just not for me. I don't get it.
- DirectorTrish SieStarsAnna KendrickRebel WilsonBrittany SnowFollowing their win at the world championship, the now separated Bellas reunite for one last singing competition at an overseas USO tour, but face a group who uses both instruments and voices. The worst one of the three, but there are some nice sequences in it which make the journey sometimes funny.
