- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. The Thing is a masterclass in horror and special effects. If you haven't seen this movie, what are you doing? I shouldn't have to write a thing for this movie.
- DirectorBill FroehlichStarsLori LethinBrendan HughesAlex RoccoIn the early 1980s, a series of gruesome murders occurred at Crippen High School. A few years later, a film crew uses the now-abandoned Crippen High as the set for a film. But an uninvited guest makes an appearance on the set.A forgotten gem of the late-80's VHS craze, Return to Horror High takes everything you're expecting to see and turns it on its head, all the while managing tension and scares with genuine laughs. Definitely a movie to watch.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsTimothy BalmeDiana PeñalverElizabeth MoodyA young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. An awesome horror comedy movie that has not only one of the goriest scenes in a movie I've ever seen, but is one of the more funny movies I've seen. Definitely recommended.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerTyler GillettStarsCalvin Lee ReederLane HughesAdam WingardWhen a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.V/H/S is a compilation-found-footage horror movie that is just great. It's a few great short horror films that are better left unspoiled. The connecting plot is a little weak, but the short films make the movie totally worth it. Totally recommend it, even if found footage isn't your thing.
- DirectorChuck RussellStarsHeather LangenkampRobert EnglundCraig WassonA psychiatrist familiar with knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.Elm Street 3 is the start of the movies slipping into horror-comedy, but it still keeps its feet planted in horror, providing some genuinely creepy moments. Like all of these movies, it's a special effects marvel and figuring out how they got certain effects and shots to work is a lot of fun. The cast of characters is a lot better than a lot of other slasher movies of the time, opting to actually characterize people past a singular character trait. It's a really good time and I'd recommend watching.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue. The movie is a little slow but generally a good watch. The special effects are good but I do have to warn you, there is a scene with a dead cat and it's not the easiest scene to stomach if you like cats, but if you can get past it the movie in general is great.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. This movie speaks for itself, it's an excellent body-horror film with great effects, an absolute classic and a must-watch for horror fans.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life. The first in the franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic, enough said.
- DirectorStephen ChiodoStarsGrant CramerSuzanne SnyderJohn Allen NelsonAliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.Despite bad reviews, this movie is great. It never really gets super scary but it always keeps a fun tone to it. Genuinely a good time. As long as you don't go in expecting to be on the edge of your seat and do expect to have a good time with a few laughs.
- DirectorJordan DowneyStarsWanda LustNatasha CordovaLindsey AndersonA homicidal turkey axes off college kids during Thanksgiving break. How do I even start with this movie? If you like horror-comedy and haven't seen this movie yet, you need to find a copy ASAP. When this movie gets funny, it gets fucking hilarious. Even when they fail at what they want to do in certain aspects it somehow works in the movie's favor. It's especially good with friends to riff over the movie with.
- DirectorColin MinihanStuart OrtizThe Vicious BrothersStarsBenjamin WilkinsonSean RogersonAshleigh GryzkoFor their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true. One of the few found footage movies that actually managed to be half decent and not just some Paranormal Activity rip-off. There is a reason for all of the cameras to be rolling, there is a reason for the people to be in the building. Obviously the movie isn't perfect, but if you want to see a full found footage movie done right, this one is worth a watch.
- DirectorWilliam LustigStarsTom AtkinsBruce CampbellLaurene LandonA killer dressed in a police uniform begins murdering innocent people on the streets of New York City.Maniac Cop, starring the late Robert Z'dar and the always great Bruce Campbell, is a cult classic for a reason. It's a fun police themed slasher movie with an imposing villain and fun characters, from a corrupt mayor to the grumpy police chief. I would totally recommend watching it.
- DirectorJohn PoliquinStarsRichard HarmonShawn C. PhillipsJennica FultonA film student who is obsessed with the movie Grave Encounters sets out with his friends to visit the psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film.Much like the first movie, Grave Encounters 2 manages to do well with its premise of "Crew goes into building and gets haunted". This movie is a direct sequel to the first, and links up directly to the plot of the first. I still like the first movie better but if you liked the first one, the second will definitely be up your alley.
- DirectorSimon BarrettJason EisenerGareth EvansStarsLawrence Michael LevineKelsy AbbottAdam WingardSearching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.V/H/S/2 is, of course, the sequel to V/H/S, a great found footage compilation horror film and much like the first movie, it's a great time. The connecting plot is a lot better than the first, and while the short films are a little weaker, it had moments that were a lot creepier than the first, but generally had me on edge less. The short films are a little slower but still great. The short film Safe Haven has some of my favorite moments in any horror movie. Doesn't quite pass the first movie, but still a great time.
- DirectorJack SholderStarsRobert EnglundMark PattonKim MyersA teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by deceased child murderer Freddy Krueger, who is out to possess him in order to continue his reign of terror in the real world.Nightmare on Elm Street 2 gets a bad rep from fans sometimes but I think the movie is great. Don't walk in with expectations that it's going to be just like the first, because it isn't. It's an effective psychological horror film that uses the framing of the first movie to tell a new story, and it's great. I would totally recommend it.
- DirectorJag MundhraStarsHy PykeGregory Scott CumminsKatina GarnerA kindly old grandfather is actually the leader of a murderous satanic cult which sacrifices its victims on Halloween.Genuinely a good time for most of the movie. Kills are pretty fun and Hy Pike's character is really fun to watch. I think the other title "Halloween Night" does better service to what this movie is, since there is maybe like one jack-o-lantern in the movie that has any significance.
- DirectorHerb FreedStarsChristopher GeorgePatch MackenzieE. Danny MurphyA masked killer begins murdering students on the school track team after a track runner dies upon completion of a 30 second 200-meter race.A Troma Entertainment horror movie that has a lot of positives but is bogged down by a lot of nothing happening until closer to the end. Better left unwatched by all but those who have a high tolerance for drawn out scenes.
- DirectorIsrael LunaJosey WellsStarsJustin ArmstrongBelmarie HuynhSwisyzinnaFilm student Brandon and four friends play with a Ouija board, unwittingly opening a portal to the spirit world and a drowned girl's deadly mystery.Slow to start but some scenes closer to the end of the movie make this one worth watching to a degree if you want to sit around with a couple friends, get drunk, and riff a b-tier horror movie.
- DirectorWilliam LustigStarsRobert DaviClaudia ChristianMichael LernerA supernatural, maniac killer cop teams up with a Times Square serial killer. As much as I wanted to like this one, it's a lot weaker than the first movie. Despite being title-billed in the movie, Bruce Campbell isn't the main character of this one which, while that is how the system works, still rubs me the wrong way. On top of that, the movie opens with the end of the last movie, cutting Bruce Campbell's screentime even further. Despite all of this, the movie is still fun and there are some scenes at the end as well as something during the credits that make the film worth watching.
- DirectorMatthijs van Heijningen Jr.StarsMary Elizabeth WinsteadJoel EdgertonUlrich ThomsenAt an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. Not to be confused with "The Thing", "The Thing" is a semi-remake/prequel to the original "The Thing" that doesn't manage to land a single one of the tense or dramatic moments the original movie had. Anything the movie might do right is directly taken from the original and if you have seen the original, this movie isn't really worth watching. If that wasn't enough, the excellent creature effects that make the original an excellent watch today are completely absent. Ugh.
- DirectorDale FabrigarEverette WallinStarsAbigail SchraderSamantha BelénJimmy LyonsSurvivors of an airplane crash find themselves within the borders of a government testing area and pursued by predators.Oh boy, this one's a doozie. The double-whammy of a found footage film and an improv film, Area 407 is a bit more than rough around the edges. The found footage makes the film very boring at parts, and the improv leads to scenes that could be really good just being a bunch of incoherent yelling. It's an ambitious movie with a lackluster execution.
- DirectorIsrael LunaStarsJustin ArmstrongGerald CrumSally GreenlandA group of unsuspecting theatre goers are trapped, after a ravenous spirit is resurrected and released from a Ouija board. So, just to preface before I just start venting about this movie, don't watch it. It's not worth it. Characters are bad, plot is confusing, the connection to the first movie is weird, the whole thing is just a mess. I don't know if it wants to do the "movie in a movie" thing that some films do or if it wants to play the first movie straight because if the first movie was just a movie how would the events of the second movie even happen if Ouija boards were cursed in the first place? Also, the twist ending? Dumbest thing. What is supposed to be a little girl looks like a babushka. It cops out of being a found footage film like the first one and uses the trope of the "Halloween horror house" attraction to give some cheap scares and it's barely a sequel to the first, I feel like they just had a bunch of the actors and since the first one did pretty well on Netflix they were just like "Well let's make a second one." and yeah, I get it, that's how low-budget horror works, but they could at least write around that. This movie isn't a complete abomination, the ending is actually fairly creepy but it taps into my personal fears so your mileage may vary. This movie was just really confusing and is better left avoided.
- DirectorLarry N. StoufferStarsPat CardiAustin StokerRosie HolotikA shock-filled tale of a serious and shy but brilliant science student who, when wrongfully forced to consume a new drug he'd created, becomes a modern day Jekyll and Hyde. The worst thing a movie can be is boring. It can be a horrible dumpster fire but as long as it's fun to watch, it's worth my time. This movie was not. It has a few "Woah" moments but only because the rest of the movie is almost unbearably boring. The movie feels like a glacier outside of the few moments when someone dies. Would not recommend.
- DirectorDan ClarkStarsDawnMarie FerraraDan ClarkDave PresslerFour convicts become embroiled in what seems like an easy way to get a million dollars. Enlisted to pick up a sealed box and guard it for one day, the four men let their curiosity take over and decide to look at its contents. This is a movie I actively try to block from my mind. This movie is so 1999 that I'm surprised it didn't come with a pair of JNCO jeans. The box art says "horror movie" but the film itself says "horrible abomination". Watch at your own risk. I could write for ages about how inept this movie is but I don't want to give it the time.
- DirectorSion SonoStarsRyo IshibashiMasatoshi NagaseMai HoshoA detective is trying to find the cause of a string of suicides. It's a really god Japanese Horror movie that kind of requires at least a surface-level understanding of Japan's economic downturn in the late 90's that caused the suicide rate to go up. Regardless, it's an interesting movie that takes a couple absurdist turns and is a really neat peek into the grotesque art movement of post-war Japan near the end. Definitely give it a watch.
