When I was a kid, local television mercilessly reprized "Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez". I saw all six films countless times and enjoyed them every time. Over time, I completely forgot about them, until recently, when without special reason they came to my mind and I simply had to see them again as soon as possible. I just finished the first film from 1964 and, risking to sound stupid, I'm so happy. It brought me back to childhood and cheered me up with its casual and cultured humor, without going over the top and vulgarity typical of modern comedy. The story is intelligent and witty, humor natural and cheerful, picture of Louis de Funes should be put in a dictionary next to the word "fun", and scenes of nudists hunt, as well as tracks "La Marche des Gendarmes" and "Douliou Douliou Saint-Tropez", remain forever etched in memory, and it is enough only to remember them to make you smile. If you didn't see this... or better, if you do not know this movie by heart, you have no idea how much you miss.
<3/10 - DirectorJean GiraultStarsLouis de FunèsMichel GalabruChristian MarinAfter being chosen to represent France in an international congress, Cruchot and his troops must go to New York, and adapt to its social and cultural aspects.I thought I saw them all as a child, but it seems I missed one. And even while watching it for the first time I was pretty much bored. There are few interesting moments, like homage to "West Side Story" and scenes with black cab driver, but overall it's not even close to the first movie. Seems forced and unconvincing...
5/10 - DirectorJean GiraultStarsLouis de FunèsJean LefebvreGeneviève GradThe gendarme Cruchot meets the widow Josepha. They quickly fall in love but Cruchot's daughter doesn't like Josepha and is determined to prevent the wedding by all means necessary.Cruchot in love
The third in a series of films about the gendarmes of Saint Tropez is also failing to keep up with the first, but it is better than the second and a decent choice when you want to rest your brain. The same team continues in the same manner and if you do not expect too much you will not be disappointed. I liked the comparison that I found in one of the reviews for this film, where the crazy nun, who in every movie appears at the right time to give a lift to Cruchot, is compared to Sandra Bullock in "Speed".
6,5/10 - DirectorJean GiraultStarsLouis de FunèsJean LefebvreGuy GrossoThe entire squad of gendarmes from Saint-Tropez has been retired. But there is no such power that could stop them from protecting the law and public order. The entire San Trope's gendarmerie is sent in an early retirement, to replace them with younger, stronger and more modern gendarmes. But Cruchot and his friends hardly endure the boredom of pensioner's life and soon get into a series of hilarious troubles. This fourth movie doesn't bring anything especially new into the franchise, but there are no bigger flaws either. A light comedy adventure for resting the brain.
6/10 - DirectorJean GiraultStarsLouis de FunèsMichel GalabruMaurice RischIn St. Tropez, French gendarme Cruchot and his men battle petroleum-drinking, human-looking, metallic aliens. The gendarme of Saint-Tropez this time are saving the world from an invasion of hollow aliens. When I was a kid this was my favorite from the series and I watched it the most. Not particularly high-quality movie, but full of healthy humor.
7/10 - DirectorJean GiraultStarsLouis de FunèsMichel GalabruMaurice RischCruchot and his gendarmes from Saint-Tropez receive a highly responsible government mission - to ensure the safety of four young beautiful female gendarmes officers. In a few days they begin to be abducted by mysterious villains.Sadly, the last one
The last movie of "Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez" franchise and the last one of the legendary Cruchot, who died the very next year. The movie is consistent with the style of its predecessors and nicely rounds the franchise. In my opinion, only the first one is better.
