George Waggner (as Joseph West), who adapted the story for the first film, takes an "original screenplay" credit here with no nod in the direction of the man who wrote the story in the first place. A glance at a few Universal B-westerns Waggner "wrote" for Bob Baker will find that the majority of them had also been written before by other writers, mostly in the John Wayne Lone Star westerns. Edmond Kelso's additional dialogue credit must have been for the interplay between Frank Faylen's and Charlie Hall's hobo characters, especially when Faylen starts explaining why the sixty-cent dollar is still worth a dollar in a 40-year precursor to voodoo economics. Story concerns railroad tycoon J.B. Matthews (Jed Prouty) taking over a rival line, being sent on an R&R vacation by his doctor, falling off his private train-car and landing in a hobo jungle occupied by Faylen and Hall, and being cured of all his ills, while reporter Jimmy Dugan (Frank Albertson) poses as a doctor in order to get an exclusive story about the railroad takeover.

The second is Pappy Goodring, the building manager who has a heart of gold and who has troubles collecting rent from most of the tenants, which irks his boss, the officious Mr. Stickwell. And third is Marshall Denningham, who owns his own bottled water business and who is one of the few tenants in the building who seems to be able to make his rent payments on time. Of the opportunities that come her way, she accepts Hap's offer to be his on-stage partner, as she would like another performing gig, and she is falling for Hap. What may be obstacles in a Maisie/Hap happy ending are Hap's abilities or inabilities as a stage performer, Hap getting in over his head with a business venture, and a young woman named Elsie McIntyre, Hap's girl back home.

- DirectorKurt NeumannStarsWilliam TracyJoe SawyerRobert BarratCaptain Gillis (Frank Faylen) puts Sergeant "Dodo" Doubleday (William Tracy), because of his photographic memory, on a candidates list for Officer's Training School ahead of Sergeant William Ames (Joe Sawyer), much to the dismay of Ames. The latter, in an effort to make Doubleday look bad, puts him in charge of the training of the Hatfield clan, a raw-to-the-max group of recruits from Kentucky. That they are all sharp-shooters does Doubleday no harm. Meanwhile, across town, a highly-respected citizen named Arnold Benedict (Clyde Filmore) and his tall squeeze Lydia (Rebel Randall) open up an in-house canteen for the soldiers. That Arnold is a German Spy comes as no great surprise to students of American history or Hal Roach films. Joan (Jean Porter), Dodo's girl friend (and ample proof that Dodo is smarter than he looks and acts), discovers that all the house-plants in the house are armed with listening devices feeding directly to the basement where most of Hollywood's German-actor colony (most under WWII assumed nom-de-plumes) are eavesdropping on the conversations of the soldiers. While Dodo and his MP band of Hatfields are cleaning out this nest of spies, Dodo hears a message on the short-wave announcing the locations and meeting places of all the 5th Column spy rings and, because of his photographic memory, there will be no problem passing this info onto Colonel Elliott (Robert Barrat.) And there wouldn't have been if Dodo hadn't got knocked out and lost his memory.
