The Top Ten Best Horror Films of All Time
Gotta love horror movies. I feel like these films have a hard time getting the good ratings from critics. Most of that has to deal with the fact that these men and women in the cast do stupid things. But I digress, here are my top 10 favorite horror movies ever!

- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.Gotta give this film credit. This film definitely created an entire genre of films, and that's the "demonic" film genre. This was just so well written, and had such great effects. This should be seen as the "godfather" of horror movies.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.Very very rarely do we see movies with blood, guts, screams, horror, and jump scares, and still have such a great plot behind it. This film not only had one of the better twists of the century, but definitely mastered the idea of letting the viewer determine the ending for themselves, and we don't see that very much in a horror movie.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteA year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game. This film was the film that got me into cinema...period. Not only does this film practically beg its audience to know that it's a film, it establishes rules from other films, and puts them on screen for us to see. It also has one of the better twists in cinematic history, and definitely has one of the best premises. This made pretty much every teenager afraid to stay home alone ever again.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw. You can include this one, and the 2003 remake for this film right here. This was the movie the movie that created the idea of having blood and guts in the film world. This was one of the scariest movies of all time. It had so much blood, and gore, and great acting. This was an instant classic that created the "based off a true story" genre of film.
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsJennifer CarpenterSteve HarrisColumbus ShortA television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.Good god did this movie scare me to death. This, and its grandfather REC were one of the most influential found-footage style films of all time. Everybody is afraid of getting sick, but this takes that idea and takes it to a whole new level. This film was so effective putting you into the shoes of the people by using the found-footage style. It made you feel like you were in the room with them, and not just a viewer, and it truly made this film scary.
- DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark FredrichsAfter moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.Gonna get this out of the way right here, this film was the only good film of the series while the rest absolutely positively sucked. This created an entirely new genre of film, and that's the found-footage genre. I feel like found footage is very useful, however, people have to understand that, you must write a good screenplay behind it. This film had a great scary touch to it, and also did a good job of starting calm, and turning into a literal nightmare.
- DirectorSean S. CunninghamStarsBetsy PalmerAdrienne KingJeannine TaylorA group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer. One of the greatest twists of the century! Twist after twist! This created the entire slasher universe as well as its cousin Halloween. We ended up believing that it was actually Jason Vorhees the whole time, when it turned out being someone so much more innocent looking.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life. One of the few films that we watch, that makes us scared to do something. This film was both creative, but also made us very scared to go to sleep. I am a bit disappointed that I was never able to go to the movies to see these old films. This is what I call, cinema gold.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again. Can you really get more iconic than this film? This was one of the most iconic horror films on this list. This film literally creates the genre of a scary person attempting to kill you. Not only that, this was one of the first films to create a villain that is practically immortal. Oh by the way, he doesn't speak.... ever.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsTed LevineKathleen QuinlanDan ByrdA traveling family falls victim to a group of mutated cannibals in a desert far away from civilization.
