- DirectorChris MarkerFrançois ReichenbachStarsWilliam Sloane CoffinN. Paul StookeyMary Allin TraversOn October 21, 1967, over 100,000 protestors gathered in Washington, D.C., for the Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam. It was the largest protest gathering yet, and it brought together a wide cross-section of liberals, radicals, hippies, and Yippies. Che Guevara had been killed in Bolivia only two weeks previously, and, for many, it was the transition from simply marching against the war, to taking direct action to try to stop the 'American war machine.' Norman Mailer wrote about the events in Armies of the Night. French filmmaker Chris Marker, leading a team of filmmakers, was also there, and made THE SIXTH SIDE OF THE PENTAGON.
- DirectorChristopher FelverStarsLawrence FerlinghettiAllen GinsbergDennis HopperThe poet and painter, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, is among the world's living monuments to arts and letters. For well over a half century, Ferlinghetti helped shape the currents of poetry and literature with his forceful engagement with society and an ideological position that often found him at odds with the political currents of his day. Ferlinghetti's quiet, behind the scenes demeanor and disarming mien may have assuaged, or even fooled, certain opponents, while in reality he was a literary mercenary, a rebel at the forefront of our own cultural revolution.

- DirectorVanni GandolfoStarsDiego AbatantuonoAngela Freddi MonteforteCinecittà is famous worldwide but no one really remembers who its founder was;his name was Luigi Freddi. This documentary using images from the Luce Archive tells the story of Freddi a Fascist civil servant who had a profound love for cinema which he developed during his many trips to Hollywood where he carefully studied and observed important American productions meeting famous producers and directors. Actor Diego Abatantuono is the voice of Freddi on screen that takes us back to the period of 1934-1939 when he was the Head of National Film Office, his ties with the duce and will to replace old cinema and organize an actual state institution as well as the ambitious project of creating city of cinema with state of the art systems architectural designs by the famous architect Gino Peressutti. Exactly 80 years since the first stone was set at Cinecittà, the voice of the protagonist defeated and forgotten recites with rage and pain but with immense love for the seventh art, his personal point of view on the making of a factory of dreams entirely Italian and the attempt to make Italian cinema" the strongest weapon".

- DirectorLeone PompucciStarsKen DukenJasmine TrincaEnnio FantastichiniThis is a true story about 40 Jewish children on their way to Palestine who were blocked by the German and Italian occupation of Yugoslavia in 1941. Before finding a haven at Villa Emma in Nonantola in northern Italy, where they arrived on June 17, 1942, the children spent several adventurous months in Slovenia, caught up in the ongoing fight between the partisans and the Italian army. In April 1943, another 33 children, some from the Balkans, others from France, joined the original group. All were orphans who had lost their parents in concentration camps and had subsequently been smuggled out of Germany by Recha Freier, a well-known Zionist. The group ranged in age from six to 21 and settled in at Villa Emma with their chaperones and teachers, Josef Indig, Marco Schoky and pianist Boris Jochverdson. The children lived in modest, but quite acceptable conditions. They attended class and courses in agriculture and craftsmanship prepared them for their impending departure for Palestine and a future on a Kibbutz. The orphans were under police supervision and forbidden to go out alone, but even so Nonantola took their plight to heart and firm friendships were established between the townspeople and the young Jews. After Italy surrendered to the Allies on September 8, 1943, German troops arrived in Nonantola and the situation changed dramatically. In less than 48 hours, Villa Emma was abandoned and the fugitive boys and girls found refuge in the seminary of the Abbey, and in the homes of local farmers, craftsman and shopkeepers. The local priest, Father Arrigo Beccari, showed great courage in these circumstances. The threat of raids by the German police provoked much anxiety and between September 28 and October 16, 1943 all the young refugees were successfully smuggled into Switzerland, fording the fast-flowing Tresa River under cover of darkness. In Switzerland, Zionist organizations hosted them in an institute in Bex in the Rodano Valley and it was from there that most of the group reached Palestine in May 1945 after an odyssey that had lasted five years. One of the boys who contracted TB and had to be admitted to a sanatorium was unable to escape and his name appears on a list of deportees to Auschwitz. Subsequently, Arrigo Beccari and Giuseppe Moreali, the local doctor in Nonantola, were cited in the Yad Vashem for their courage and they have their own tree in the Avenue of Just Men.

- DirectorAlessandro BetteroPeople who have lived to 100 and more and the children of the combatants. These are the last witnesses of the First World War as fought on the Italian front. They experienced war in their own lands between the Isonzo and Adige rivers when the north east of Italy was at the same time the scene of battles and of domestic life. Whole families, often related to each other, found themselves on opposing sides through no fault of their own. Italians, Frenchmen, Britons, Americans, Czechs and Slovaks on one side were facing Austrians, Germans and Hungarians on the other. This is the unparalleled story of the Great War as told by the last survivors: the children of those years.

- DirectorPaolo QuaregnaEmigrating can also turn into an extraordinary adventure. They have made a radical decision. They have chosen to leave their "bitter land", as just under 30 million Italians have done in the last 100 years. They have packed their bags, crossed borders and crossed the ocean. Of all the American lands, they have chosen Quebec, an enclave with a Mediterranean flavour, where the French language is spoken, a province rooted in the Catholic tradition, always open to crossbreeding. They are men and women of great courage and resilience, inspired by a "nomadic spirit": they have preferred to be masters of their time rather than fighting, among brothers, to defend a small patch of bitter land. Some of them, going to the mining districts of the icy north, have discovered (thanks to culinary and musical "contaminations") a special complicity with the Innu "natives", who lived there well before the first waves of migration. Following the path of the Stea family from Sannicandro di Bari, who emigrated to Belgium to work in the mines, before moving to Toronto and Montreal, where they found casual jobs, and finally to the iron mines of Schefferville in the Canadian Great North, the film offers portraits of nine "economic migrants" and their children who have been able to adapt to a new life, planting new roots without losing their links with the Italian spirit.
- DirectorMario CameriniStarsDonatella NeriCarlo BenettiPiero CarnabuciA young Italian-educated Libyan nobleman is summoned to fight for the Ottoman Empire in 1911.

There is a young leftist idealist, a city councilperson who is fighting real estate speculation. This is the portrait of Latina and its inhabitants. This province is certainly an anomaly, but is not so far from the present-day times that all of Italy is going through now.

- DirectorOlmo CerriStarsGabriella BressonMaria BressonGigliola CinquettiCarmela, don Gregorio, Gabriella and Lorella have never met but they have a lot in common. In the mid 60's, at the peak of the great migratory wave, alone or together with their families, they arrived in Switzerland, where they lived for a more or less lengthy period. They lived here during the difficult Schwarzenbach years while listening to the young pop singer from Verona, Gigliola Cinquetti, who became famous after her victory at the Sanremo Music Festival of 1964 with her song Non ho l'età (per amarti) / I'm not old enough (to love you). Thanks to her reassuring aspect, Gigliola found her way into their hearts and those of many other Italian immigrants all over the world. A symbol of the Italy they left behind, she became an object of veneration, resulting in her receiving thousands and thousands of fan letters. Four of these letters, having survived intact to the present day, tell of Carmela, don Gregorio, Gabriella and Lorella and of their experience as "immigrants". Carmela followed her parents to Switzerland, where for years she lived clandestinely and where, with patience and tenacity, built the base for her own family and profession. Don Gregorio, a young Calabrian seminarian in Chur, was an activity organizer in immigrant camps. After twenty years of service in the parishes of canton Zurich, he returned to Calabria to care for his original community and today's new immigrants. Gabriella, born in Switzerland to parents from the Veneto, followed her mother and father in their failed attempt to return to Italy. Lastly Lorella, whose parents hoped in vain to settle in Ticino and who were worn out by hard labor without every attaining the well being they desired. Four very different stories that cross paths to the refrain of one of the most popular songs of the period. Four different stories that speak of hopes, dreams, and solidarity. But they also tell of closure, xenophobia, clandestinity and exploitation.

- DirectorFrancesco SbanoStarsMastro CiccioPeppe d'AgostinoPeppe De LucaMuch has been written and broadcast since a commando of the ndrangheta shot down six men in Duisburg in August 2007. Shedding true light on the issue, Men of Honour is the first documentary film to put the Calabrian Mafia bosses themselves in front of the camera. They not only explain why the Duisburg murders took place (as part of a vendetta between two feuding clans) but also reveal that the mafia is doing business in the midst of Germany with large-scale operations. We powder your noses and build your roads says the German adjutant of the ndrangheta, as the Mafia is known in Calabria. He blows the whistle on construction projects and financial transactions that the Calabrian Mafia has used to wash drug money. Today we are respected in higher political circles around the globe, he explains, particularly here in Germany. Film director Francesco Sbano, himself Calabrian, conducted years of research and was ultimately successful in penetrating to the very centre of the Onorata Società, or the honourable society. The Mafia godfathers show us their rituals, their traditions and their code of honour. Never before has a film been so successful in reporting directly and authentically from within this clandestine world. Men of Honour takes us to the Aspromonte Mountains, to the origins of the ndrangheta a journey that throws our picture of Italy out of focus. Filmed in quiet, wintery 16mm images by cameraman Marcus Jaeger, the film recounts the history of the Italian South as it has never been told before. In Men of Honour, the voices of day labourers and farming families are heard. Musicians sing about the deeds of the ndrangheta. And the residents of San Luca di Aspromonte stubbornly defend their villages name, fending off its reputation as a hub of organised crime. The film leads us deep into the hinterlands of Palermo and Naples, areas ridden with poverty and hopelessness. It tells of a culture alive between pride and desperation; a culture that wants social progress but needs the Mafia. The command is sacred, says a masked latitante, a man of honour who, having committed a bloody deed, is forced to live in the solitude of the mountains for several years. As a child, I had nothing. The honourable society raised me; it is the mother of all Calabrians. Men of Honour also recounts how the mafia has been continually used and endorsed by the powerful: how the Allied forces hired the Mafia to prepare the landing of US troops during World War II. How politicians profited from vote buying carried out by the local Mafiosi. How Mafia millions were fed into the nations financial system and how the Mafiosi advanced to become construction magnates, while their homeland was left behind as a social no man's land. Italys unity is a great deception, says the elderly historian Nicola Zitara, relegating the schoolbook version to the realm of legend. Under no circumstances had the rich North always maintained the upkeep of the impoverished South. During the 1860s, Piedmont was practically bankrupt. In the War of 1861, the Piedmonts secured the deposits of the Bank of Naples and then brutally crushed the subsequent insurgencies of the so-called brigands of rural Southern Italy. The streets of Calabria are still named after the Piedmont generals who introduced martial law. And the presence of the briganti, the rural guerrillas of the 19th century, is still ubiquitous. They live on in the traditions of the Mafia present in the tattoos of the old pastry baker, for instance, who is proud to be a man of honour. Were like snakes poisonous, he says, and shows the filmmaker a snakehead tattoo on his biceps. Above it, a wind rose is emblazoned, symbolizing Omertà, the conspiracy of silence. As long as I live, I will never fall into the filth is inscribed on his other arm.
