- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsDavid HarbourMilla JovovichIan McShaneCaught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.Hellboy has become somewhat synonymous with Guillermo del Toro, his directorial eye allowing for the creation of two stellar films with Ron Perlman starring as the titular anti-hero. Whilst neither are returning for this reboot, Neil Marshall's upcoming film promises to be a drastic diversion from del Toro's dark, yet family-friendly approach. Marshall has proven himself as an excellent horror director, with his 2005 feature 'The Descent' emblematic of this. Coupled with an R-rating, 2019's 'Hellboy' will hopefully be the brutal alternative to its forebears, especially if they maintain the darkly comic tone. Furthermore, David Harbour's interpretation may well cement 'Hellboy' as the definitive on-screen outing of the comic book character.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.Quentin Tarantino has earned such a rapport as a director that it carries commercial value, a fact boasted by few others. This reputation is fully justified, however, with each film in his catalogue consistently brimming with razor-sharp dialogue, iconic characters and more-often than not, gloriously executed action sequences. His fearlessness to tackle controversial subject matter recurs here, setting his new feature around the time of the Manson murders, studded with an astounding cast that only Tarantino could assemble. The penultimate film under Tarantino's belt has the potential to be one of his best.
- DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonJamie BellRichard MaddenA musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.Elton John has long warranted a biopic depicting his life and influential music career, however, it seems Dexter Fletcher and Co. are going above and beyond to make this less a generic rise-and-fall story, and more a lasting fantasy musical that will subvert genre tropes and stand out above all its competitors. It's this approach that provokes such anticipation, with Fletcher proving his directorial skill after 2013's 'Sunshine on Leith' and Egerton tackling the lead role, one which will likely become a standout in his career moving forward. The talent both in front and behind the camera, as well as the original premise, suggest 'Rocketman' could represent the revolution needed to the otherwise tired biography genre.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsLupita Nyong'oWinston DukeElisabeth MossAdelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them.'Get Out' was a low-budget horror that garnered universal praise both commercially and critically. Now, with a bigger budget and equal creative freedom, Jordan Peele lets loose on his new 'social thriller'. Such a newfound directorial talent already arouses enormous excitement. Very little is known about this project, but the idea Blumhouse allowing Peele to further his directorial career is promising to say the least.
- DirectorJames GrayStarsBrad PittTommy Lee JonesRuth NeggaAstronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.Brad Pitt is no longer as regular a cinematic staple as he once was, choosing his projects with a seemingly more mature and specific tendency. As a result, the fact he is starring in an original science-fiction film from an enormously accomplished director should be cause for excitement. No matter the narrative, the talent attached should help 'Ad Astra' become a standout upon its release. Whether it be a high-concept drama, or a more conventional thriller, it should be one of the better science-fiction films of 2019.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsRalph FiennesGemma ArtertonRhys IfansIn the early years of the 20th century, the Kingsman agency is formed to stand against a cabal plotting a war to wipe out millions.Little needs to be said to justify excitement for another instalment in the Kingsman series, with the original likely being one of the best spy films of the 21st century. The tone of these films, as well as the talent attached and Matthew Vaughn's directorial vision always proves and equation for pure cinematic joy, with his action sequences being some of the most unique and impressive additions. Whilst many were less favourable towards 'The Golden Circle', the clear passion all those involved feel for the property likely encourages those talents to go above and beyond to make 'Kingsman 3' an excellent addition to an already stellar franchise.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.Rian Johnson has cemented himself as a special directorial talent, his work on 'Looper' revitalising the time-travel genre, and 'The Last Jedi' arguably being one of the better Star Wars films in recent history. As a result of this, and despite his work with Lucasfilm, the prospect of Johnson tackling an original concept, an action film starring Daniel Craig, no less, proves promising.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure. The DC Universe has, arguably, failed to launch, its darker tone and mediocre films appearing more a desparate attempt to exploit the already-weary superhero craze than a genuine passion project. As a result, this new 'Joker' film, a lower-budget, smaller scale origin story focusing on the personal plight of the iconic character appears a vastly different approach, with its diversion from the main franchise allowing a different tone and creative freedom. Above all else, however, the infallible Joaquin Pheonix taking the titular role is cause for much intrigue.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroAl PacinoJoe PesciAn illustration of Frank Sheeran's life, from W.W.II veteran to hit-man for the Bufalino crime family and his alleged assassination of his close friend Jimmy Hoffa.Martin Scorsese can seemingly do no wrong, with each film in his catalogue gaining almost universal praise. 'The Irishman', however, may represent his continued obsession with the crime genre maturing. His unmatched vision established by 'Mean Streets' and 'Goodfellas' returns again here, whilst his reunion with De Niro can be nothing is not a recipe for gold.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsCate BlanchettBilly CrudupEmma NelsonA loving mom becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Her leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.Richard Linklater is a master at crafting personal stories, and his collaboration with such a talented cast here is hugely exciting. The majority of Linklater's films, especially of late, have proven again and again the popularity of this approach. Whilst this film won't shine brightly in the public eye, it's going to be a must-see for any Linklater fans.
