Peplum Paradise Part 6: Historical and Fantasy films - Pre-1949
This is a list of historical (set pre-1800) or historical-fantasy films produced before 1949 - the start point for all the other Peplum Paradise lists.
The list is alphabetical using the most common English titles (where applicable), so the IMDb titles may appear to be all over the place alphabetically.
This list is certainly far from complete and a work in progress, so I would welcome any suggestions of titles I may have omitted.
I will be updating the list regularly with occasional reviews and any new titles that I may discover.
Latest Updates:-
Review: Sinbad, The Sailor (1947)
Review: Scipio Africanus: The Defeat Of Hannibal (1937)
Review: Captain Blood (1935)

- DirectorDavid SmithAlbert E. SmithStarsJ. He and his friend Jeremy are bought by the vicious Col. Bishop, who purchases them for his niece Arabella. Blood rallies the other slaves to rebel against their slavery; they escape and take over a Spanish galleon. Blood and his crew become pirates and the scourge of the Caribbean. England, at war with France and losing, offers him a commission in the Royal Navy if he will fight for them. Blood, who has no love for the French but even less for the English, has to decide whether it's better for he and his men to fight with the English or against them.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsErrol FlynnOlivia de HavillandLionel AtwillAfter treating a Monmouth rebel against King James II in 1680s England, a young Irish doctor is exiled as a slave to Jamaica where he captures a Spanish galleon and becomes the most feared pirate of the Caribbean. One of the all-time classic pirate movies, and the one that justifiably made bankable stars of both Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland. The story takes Flynn, in the title role, from English doctor wrongly, though not falsely, convicted of harboring a traitor, then shipped off to the West Indies where he is sold into slavery, who then escapes and becomes a notorious pirate captain. Olivia, who tended to specialize in more dowdy roles, has never looked lovelier as Arabella, the woman who buys Blood and falls for his charms. Sterling support comes from Basil Rathbone as rival French pirate Levasseur, Lionel Atwill as Colonel Bishop, Blood’s nemesis and Arabella’s brother, and every gold digger’s chump Guy Kibbee as an unlikely member of Blood’s gang. My biggest shock was that the film was shot in black and white, though not altogether unsurprising given that it featured an untested leading man, but even so it still looks quite glorious. Helped by an intelligent and realistic script, this is a terrific piece of swashbuckling entertainment that stands up well today, and is the perfect demonstration of why Flynn was to hold his position as the genre’s top box office star for the next decade. Errol’s ill-fated son Sean starred in an Italian-produced sequel of sorts, The Son Of Captain Blood, in 1965.
