107 titles
- DirectorGeorges MélièsStarsGeorges MélièsVictor AndréBleuette BernonA group of astronomers go on an expedition to the Moon.lnteresting for its historical importance only. lf it was made today, l would give it a definite zero, if even that....Btw, the moon at the end is really creepy.
- DirectorEdwin S. PorterStarsGilbert M. 'Broncho Billy' AndersonA.C. AbadieGeorge BarnesA group of bandits stage a brazen train hold-up, only to find a determined posse hot on their heels.Another super old film. This one (the first western of all time) had a more elaborate plot, in comparison. But still, movies from this era were very primitive and l can't overlook that.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsPeter LorreEllen WidmannInge LandgutWhen the police in a German city are unable to catch a child-murderer, other criminals join in the manhunt. What can you expect from a movie with the shortest title ever? A child murderer (Lorre) is being chased down by cops, criminals and homeless people. Some scenes might have taken a bit too long, but as a whole, you can expect to see a great film!
- DirectorTod BrowningStarsWallace FordLeila HyamsOlga BaclanovaA circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance. The plot is okey, but the execution could've been done better. lt's about a circus containing lots of disfigured people as well as "normal" people.
One of the characters, a vertically challenged dude, falls in love with a normal sized woman, and he gets the impression that the feelings are returned. l think too much focus was made on random scenes, just to show these odd looking people like Schlitze.
The message of the movie is a good one, though, and l admire Tod for doing a daring film like this, in 1932. - DirectorFrank BorzageStarsSpencer TracyLoretta YoungMarjorie RambeauBill takes Trina into his depression camp cabin. Later, just as he finds showgirl LaRue who will support him, Trina becomes pregnant."Oh look, this movie has Spencer Tracy AND Loretta Young, l'm sure it's awesome"......Well, l was wrong. The movie is forgettable, l don't even rememeber the plot. Some dude decides to take this poor girl home and..... stuff happens(?)......l don't know...
- DirectorJean VigoStarsJean DastéRobert le FlonLouis LefebvreIn a repressive boarding school with rigid rules of behavior, four boys decide to rebel against the direction on a celebration day.A French movie that l watched only because of a book that demands me to see it before l die. lt's about a bunch of kids in a boarding school, and the director is clearly trying to do something "artful" but l didn't get it. Je suis désolé, mais ca filme sont très bizarre....
- DirectorRay McCareyStarsMary CarlisleSterling HollowayEdward J. NugentA conceited college track star, used to being "big man on campus", gets a jolt when he loses an election to see who is the most popular man in the school.A boring film about college teens and popularity...l didn't know these types of films existed back then.
- DirectorEdward F. ClineStarsJackie CooperThomas MeighanJackie SearlYoung boy Bill Peck adores his father and tries to be good, but the arrival of Bill's cousin Horace upsets Bill's plans. Horace's brattish ways result in Bill rather than Horace getting in trouble.Jackie Cooper gets into trouble when his cousin comes for visit. An insignificant kid's film.
- DirectorHarlan ThompsonStarsCary GrantGenevieve TobinHelen MackA handsome plastic surgeon has a beauty clinic, where many a beautiful client falls in love with him. His unnoticed secretary is in love with him, too.Cary Grant works as a plastic surgeon. His job is to make average women look beautiful. l should get a job like that! The movie was a bit funny at times, so...yeah...
- DirectorLowell ShermanJack ConwayStarsLoretta YoungCary GrantJackie KelkAn immoral mother blackmails a wealthy businessman after he accidentally hits her delinquent son with his truck.A short and bland movie, about an annyoing little kid, his questionable mother Loretta Young and a gentleman (Cary Grant). Not much to say here.
- DirectorJohn M. StahlStarsClaudette ColbertWarren WilliamRochelle HudsonA struggling widow and her daughter take in a Black housekeeper and her fair-skinned daughter; the two women start a successful business but face familial, identity, and racial issues along the way.An awesome movie about a black housekeeper and her light skinned daughter. The daughter can't accept the fact that she's black and wants to distance herself from her mother. Some scenes evoke strong emotions and reactions. It's one of the best films of the 30's so far. There's also this plot about Colbert starting a business with the housekeeper.
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsClark GableClaudette ColbertWalter ConnollyA rogue reporter trailing a runaway heiress for a big story joins her on a bus heading from Florida to New York and they end up stuck with each other when the bus leaves them behind at one of the stops along the way.Very overrated, in my opinion. lt doesn't really stand out from all the other romantic comedies. It follows the exact formula for how to make a movie of this genre. In fact, Colbert and Gable were surprised themselves. Also, why is it called "It Happened One Night" when it clearly happened over the past few weeks?
- DirectorMarion GeringStarsSylvia SidneyCary GrantEdward ArnoldA European princess arrives in New York City to secure a much-needed loan for her country. She contracts the mumps, and an actress who looks exactly like her is hired to impersonate her.A princess falls ill, and they find a regular woman who looks exactly like the princess. Generic movie with Cary Grant.
- DirectorNorman Z. McLeodStarsW.C. FieldsKathleen HowardJean RouverolA henpecked New Jersey grocer makes plans to move to California to grow oranges, despite the resistance of his overbearing wife. This is the kind of humour that we see all the time nowadays. The ones with the unlucky man, the annoying wife and those constant physical comedy sequences. l'm sure it was great back then, but now it just seems so...predictable. But still has its fun moments.
- DirectorJoseph SantleyStarsAnn RutherfordFrank AlbertsonJ. Farrell MacDonaldWhen a young man is befriended by a gambling ship operator and made a partner in the business, he becomes involved in a police manhunt after he covers up a murder committed by his new partner. The movie is about a man who escapes from the police and ends up at her and her father's place. lt was okey, not too bad.
- DirectorWesley RugglesStarsClaudette ColbertFred MacMurrayRay MillandA stenographer becomes a famed entertainer and is courted by an English nobleman and an informal American reporter.Watching Fred MacMurray eat popcorn and hearing Claudette Colbert singing horribly is NOT entertaining. l'm sorry, but it really isn't.
- DirectorNorman Z. McLeodStarsBing CrosbyMadge EvansEdith FellowsLarry Poole, in prison on a false charge, promise an inmate that when he gets out he will look up and help out a family. The family turns out to be a young girl, Patsy Smith, and her elderly grandfather who need lots of help.Bing Crosby helps a little girl and her father getting a better house. But there's an orphanage lady who wants to see Edith Fellows there...or something like that, l don't remember all of it :l
- DirectorWilliam Cameron MenziesStarsRaymond MasseyEdward ChapmanRalph RichardsonThe story of a century: a decades-long second World War leaves plague and anarchy, then a rational state rebuilds civilization and attempts space travel.A British science fiction that depicts the coming 100 years in a dystopian manner. lt was pretty cool, until the last third part, then it got a bit too weird. lnterestingly enough, a war did occur 3 years later....
- DirectorGregory La CavaStarsWilliam PowellCarole LombardAlice BradyA scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler - but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye.
- DirectorWilliam A. WellmanStarsCarole LombardFredric MarchCharles WinningerAn eccentric woman learns she is not dying of radium poisoning as earlier assumed, but when she meets a reporter looking for a story, she feigns sickness again for her own profit. There are 2 cool things about the film:
1: A young Billy Barty kicks Freddie March in the legs!
2: lt's one of few color movies from the decade.
But if you wanna know what the plot is about, it's basically about a woman (Lombard) who gets mistaken for being terminally ill, so she gets a lot of media attention. - DirectorElmer CliftonStarsLuana WaltersArthur GardnerDorothy ShortA high-school girl gets involved with a ring of teenage marijuana smokers and starts down the road to ruin. A reporter poses as a soda jerk to infiltrate the gang of teen dope fiends. An okey anti-drugs movie. Maybe a bit preachy, but both Arthur Gardner and Fay McKenzie are still alive. See, kids? Don't do drugs and you will live a looooong time. Yep :p
- DirectorWilliam NighStarsMickey RooneyAnne NagelFrank Shields Sr.A schoolteacher comes to a new town and finds herself caught up in the town's problems and disputes. Please don't ask me what the movie is about...l don't remember, it was so boring.
- DirectorFrank O'ConnorStarsRobert FiskeHelene LeBerthonArthur GardnerA wealthy young woman, racked with guilt because she wasn't there when her mother died, is so desperate to contact her that she gets involved with a phony mystic who promises to put her in touch with her mother's spirit, but who is really after her money. A reporter who loves the young woman sets out to expose the phony "psychic" for the charlatan he is.Oh boy, where to begin? lt's about..umm...someone trying to contact the dead, and some spritiual guy?....or something...sorry, l can't quite remember the plot. That always happens with lousy movies. l'm a terrible reviewer, lol.
- DirectorAllan DwanStarsTyrone PowerLoretta YoungAnnabellaFerdinand de Lesseps, disappointed in love, is sent as a junior diplomat to the Isthmus of Suez, and realizes it's just the place for a canal.A relatively young Tyrone Power has plans to build the Suez Canal. Nothing out of the ordinary, really....
- DirectorErnst LubitschStarsClaudette ColbertGary CooperEdward Everett HortonAfter learning her multi-millionaire fiancé has already been married seven times, the daughter of a penniless marquis decides to tame him. This movie was a while ago, so l don't remember exactly what it was about. Something about a guy (Cooper) who's been married many times, and his eight wife wants to make sure she is his last.....But l do remember that l wasn't too impressed with it.
- DirectorJohn FarrowStarsKay FrancisBonita GranvilleJohn LitelThe town of Colbrook, Massachusetts was founded by the family of the same name, and as such they are its leading family. Widowed Mrs. Reginald Colbrook - Mary - has had to manage the family money following her husband's death, something she had never done and at which she knows she is not good. However, in doing what she felt best, she made some bad investments, leaving her and her children - young adult Muriel, teenagers Reginald Jr. ("Reggie") and Gwen, and adolescent Bill - penniless, which she tries to hide from them. When the children do find out, Muriel, Reggie and Gwen, absorbed in their own lives, decide to do what they believe is best for their own individual situation, which involves abandoning their mother and living with their judgmental and controlling but wealthy paternal Aunt Caroline. Bill, on the other hand, was not invited by Aunt Caroline, as she has always believed the rumors that he is not her biological nephew, he who would not have gone with her regardless in his unconditional love for his mother. As Mary and Bill try to deal with their financial situation, their lives are affected by Bill's new friend, who was previously seen only as their curmudgeonly neighbor Mrs. Adelaide Crosby, and John Rudlin, the bank manager who has always had a bad name by all adult blood Colbrooks, such as Reginald Sr. and Aunt Caroline, but who Mary has always considered a friend. These supportive relationships and ultimately the truth may set them all on a path to true happiness. One of the first black-and-white ones l saw. lt's about a family with financial problems. Dickie Moore's the real standout in this one.
- DirectorGeorge B. SeitzStarsMickey RooneyJudy GarlandLewis StoneAndy has problems raising the last payment for a used car and juggling three pretty girls with an upcoming country club dance scheduled.l only watch classics that l can access for free online. Several Andy Hardy pictures were online so l've watched a lot of them. In it, Rooney has to choose between three girls, Lana Turner, Ann Rutherford and Judy Garland.
Cool fact: The little boy with the radio is Gene Reynolds. He's one of the producers/writers for the popular tv-show M.A.S.H. - DirectorHoward HawksStarsKatharine HepburnCary GrantCharles RugglesWhile trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby.A screwball comedy. Even though Kat Hepburn was a bit annoying, it had many entertaining moments. l could see myself watching this again.
- DirectorSam NewfieldStarsBilly CurtisYvonne Moray'Little Billy' RhodesAn evil gunslinging midget comes to terrorize the good little people of Tiny Town. The townspeople organize to defeat him, and zany antics ensue.A 1930's all midget cast cowboy b-movie...yeah, it IS as bad as it sounds....
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartJean ArthurClaude RainsA naive youth leader is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero in Washington, but he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character.Time to introduce Jimmy Stewart, who you'll be seeing alot from in these reviews. James Stewart is a regular guy who tries to make an impact in the White House. lt wasn't a bad movie at all, but l expected a lot more since l like courtroom dramas. Couldn't he have fought for a more worthy cause?
- DirectorVictor FlemingKing VidorStarsJudy GarlandFrank MorganRay BolgerYoung Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz, and embark on a quest with three new friends to see the Wizard, who can return her to her home and fulfill the others' wishes. As a kid, l read all the books in the series. Also, l've seen this so many times that l can't look at it objectively anymore. lt's just a nostalgic experience regardless of the quality. Sorry, but l can't grade this one...
- DirectorVictor FlemingGeorge CukorSam WoodStarsClark GableVivien LeighThomas MitchellA sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsLaurence OlivierJoan FontaineGeorge SandersA self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence.Wow. How this movie can be so acclaimed is a shock to me. Maybe it requires a second viewing? For a Hitchcock movie, I was expecting....no, l was requiring a greater film. lt's about this woman (Fontaine) who marries Olivier and moves in to his mansion. But in the house, there are creepy housekeepers and this makes her uncomfortable. l don't know....it just didn't keep me fascinated and l didn't feel any tension.
- DirectorGeorge B. SeitzStarsLewis StoneMickey RooneyCecilia ParkerJudge Hardy takes his family to New York City, where Andy quickly falls in love with a socialite. However, he finds the high society life too expensive and eventually decides that he liked it better back home.Andy falls in love with a girl from a picture. Am l the only one who thinks that Mickey overacts in the AH movies ? He's like the direct opposite of Gregory Peck! But still. it's not a completely terrible movie...
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsGary CooperBarbara StanwyckEdward ArnoldA penniless drifter is recruited by an ambitious columnist to impersonate a non-existent person who said he'd be committing suicide as a protest, and a social movement begins.Or as Homer would put it: "Meet John D'oh"! My second Capra film, which holds up pretty good. l'd even say it's better than Mr Smith Goes.....lt's about a woman (Stanwyck) who invents a story about a man, John Doe, who threatens to commit suicide as a protest against the *beeped* up" society. A man is hired to "become" John Doe, Gary Cooper.
- DirectorNorman TaurogStarsSpencer TracyMickey RooneyBobs WatsonMickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy return in this sequel to the original Boys Town. This time the school faces financial trouble as Father Flanagan tries to help every little boy he meets. Larry Nunn and Dwayne Hickman join in this time around as Flanagan discovers a reform school that has neither reforming nor schooling. It's up to Flanagan, Whitey, and the rest of the school to teach them there's no such thing as a bad boy.I've seen small parts of the first movie, Boys Town, when l was young and had the TCM channel. Maybe l should've watched the whole first movie, because l didn't find this sequel to be interesting.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsCary GrantJoan FontaineCedric HardwickeA shy young heiress marries a charming gentleman, and soon begins to suspect he is planning to murder her.A lot better than Rebecca, but still not up to my taste. Fontaine suspects that Grant is out to kill her. I still don't see why she married him in the first place.
- DirectorGeorge B. SeitzStarsLewis StoneMickey RooneyJudy GarlandHoping his son will attend his alma mater, Judge Hardy agrees to let Andy look for work in New York for the summer before committing to start college. In the big city, Andy is confronted with the harsh realities of life and love.Andy goes to New York to work. Not as light hearted as the previous AH films, which is a refreshing.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsGary CooperWalter BrennanJoan LeslieA Tennessee farmer and marksman is drafted in World War I, and struggles with his pacifist inclinations before becoming one of the most celebrated war heroes.Gary Cooper goes from being a no-good hillbilly with a good shooting ability, to a religious pacifist, and ends up a war hero. A fairly good biopic about Alvin York.
- DirectorOrson WellesStarsOrson WellesJoseph CottenDorothy ComingoreFollowing the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'l CAN'T BELIEVE ROSEBUD WAS HIS......nah, not gonna spoil all the "fun" for all of you that haven't seen it. Watch it, and you'll realize what an overrated movie it really is. Innovative camera shots isn't enough. It's not a bad movie, but the top 10 of all time? You gotta be kidding me.
- DirectorArchie MayoStarsGeorge MontgomeryAnn RutherfordGlenn Miller and His OrchestraConnie Ward is in seventh heaven when Gene Morrison's band rolls into town. She is swept off her feet by trumpeter Bill Abbot. After marrying him, she joins the bands tour and learns about life as an orchestra wife, weathering the catty attacks of the other band wives. Many movies start off okey, but the longer they go on, the worse they get. This is one of them.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsGinger RogersRay MillandRita JohnsonA frustrated city girl disguises herself as a youngster in order to get a cheaper train ticket home. But little "Sue Sue" finds herself in a whole heap of grown-up trouble when she hides out in a compartment with a handsome Major. One of Wilder's first movies, l think. lt had a promising plot but the film lost too much pace and substance during the second half.
Also, slightly disturbing that the man was attracted to someone who he thought was only 12....Lolita, anyone? - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsTeresa WrightJoseph CottenMacdonald CareyA teenage girl, overjoyed when her favorite uncle comes to visit the family in their quiet California town, slowly begins to suspect that he is in fact the "Merry Widow" killer sought by the authorities.I liked this one. The way that Teresa slowly starts realizing that her idolized uncle actually has a dark side, and the subsequent tension that builds up between them is great.
- DirectorGeorge SidneyStarsKathryn GraysonGene KellyMary AstorAcrobat Eddie Marsh is in the army now. His first act is to become friendly with Kathryn Jones, the colonel's pretty daughter. Their romance hits a few snags, including disapproval from her father. Eddie's also plagued by fear of having an accident during his family's trapeze act in the army variety show, which also features a gallery of MGM stars.Wartime musical with various celebrities. The Gene Kelly/Kathryn Grayson storyline was uninteresting.
- DirectorClarence BrownStarsMickey RooneyFrank MorganJames CraigTeenager Homer Macauley stays at home in small-town Ithaca to support his family while his older brother Marcus prepares to go to war.Human Comedy was far from comedy. lt had a serious mood to it, which reflected the ongoing war. Rooney is surprisingly good in a dramatic role . Who knew?
- DirectorWilliam A. WellmanStarsHenry FondaDana AndrewsMary Beth HughesWhen a posse captures three men suspected of killing a local farmer, they become strongly divided over whether or not to lynch the men.ls it right to take matters into own hands? Risk the lives of potentially innocent people? This movie deals with this subject in a rather hasty way. It might have gotten a higher score if it had been longer.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsFred MacMurrayBarbara StanwyckEdward G. RobinsonA Los Angeles insurance representative lets an alluring housewife seduce him into a scheme of insurance fraud and murder that arouses the suspicion of his colleague, an insurance investigator.A film noir about a man who decides to help Stanwyck in her evil plan. As usual, something goes wrong. A good movie.
- DirectorAlexander HallStarsCary GrantJanet BlairJames GleasonA cash-strapped theater producer promotes a nine-year-old boy's dancing caterpillar. One of the biggest movie stars of the 40's decided to do a movie about a dancing caterpilar...Who? Cary Grant! This is one of his most unknown films, and I think kids might enjoy it.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsDorothy McGuireJoan BlondellJames DunnEncouraged by her idealistic if luckless father, a bright and imaginative young woman comes of age in a Brooklyn tenement during the early 1900s.I don't quite remember this one, unfortunately.
- DirectorWilliam A. SeiterStarsJoan FontaineGeorge BrentDennis O'KeefeSusan is about to be married, but the wedding may get called off after her fiancé summons three former beaus. Each reveals a different portrait of Susan: one describes her as a naive country girl who reluctantly becomes an actress, another paints a picture of a gay party girl, and the third describes a serious intellectual. Which one is the real Susan?A guy is about to marry Fontaine, and her ex-husbands all give different versions of her. Which one is the true one? More importantly, do we really care? Lol.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsIngrid BergmanGregory PeckMichael ChekhovA psychiatrist protects the identity of an amnesia patient accused of murder while attempting to recover his memory.lngrid Bergman is sweet as always, and Gregory Peck is as wooden as always. The movie doesn't manage to make me interested. The whole psychoanalysis thing seemed contrived or oversimplified.
- DirectorJohn M. StahlStarsGene TierneyCornel WildeJeanne CrainA writer falls in love with a young socialite and they're soon married, but her obsessive love for him threatens to be the undoing of them both as well as everyone around them.Gene Tierney meets a man that reminds her of someone special. Soon, they get married and her irrational behavior starts to show. The lake scene with Darryl Hickman is memorable. Gene is hot, even when she's evil :p
- DirectorWillis GoldbeckStarsMickey RooneyLewis StoneSara HadenAndy Hardy goes to college after returning from World War II. He is in love with Kay Wilson this time.Really? They continued to do another Andy Hardy after the war? It's just not the same thing anymore, he was 26 in this. Let it go and move on, Mickey......
- DirectorLewis MilestoneStarsBarbara StanwyckVan HeflinLizabeth ScottA man is reunited with his childhood friend and her husband who believes he knows the truth about the death of her rich aunt years earlier.Kirk Douglas makes his debut in this film noir. lt was neither really bad nor really good. An average film.
- DirectorRobert SiodmakStarsBurt LancasterAva GardnerEdmond O'BrienHit men kill an unresisting victim, and investigator Reardon uncovers his past involvement with beautiful, deadly Kitty Collins.Maybe it's because l was too busy staring at Ava Gardner? Or maybe it's because I didn't have any subtitles? (Film Noir langauge can be difficult for me to understand sometimes). That's why l'm giving it a low grade...I couldn't grasp the plot.
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.l thought l would hate this movie due to Capra's ability to be over-sentimental and also the fact that it's a christmas movie. But it's actually really good. We get to know George Bailey alot closer, sort of like an biopic/biography...The ending was a bit over the top, though.
- DirectorHenry KingStarsJeanne CrainGlenn LanganLynn BariA woman reminisces about her teenage years in the 1920s, when she fell in love with her teacher.
- DirectorRobert SiodmakStarsOlivia de HavillandLew AyresThomas MitchellA man is found murdered, and witnesses are sure about the woman they saw leaving his apartment. However, it becomes apparent that the woman has a twin, and finding out which one is the killer seems impossible. An interesting psychological thriller type film where the leading roles are played by Olivia DeHavilland and...eh Olivia DeHavilland, lol. lt deals with sibling rivalry in a fascinating way. l wonder what Joan thinks of this movie.....
- DirectorElia KazanStarsGregory PeckDorothy McGuireJohn GarfieldA reporter pretends to be Jewish in order to cover a story on anti-Semitism, and personally discovers the true depths of bigotry and hatred.A movie about anti-semitism. Journalist Gregory Peck pretends to be a jew, to see how he is viewed by others. This came out just 2 years after the holocaust ended, so it was interesting to watch.
- DirectorByron HaskinStarsBurt LancasterLizabeth ScottKirk DouglasFrankie Madison leaves prison expecting a share from his ex-partner. But Prohibition bootlegging didn't prepare Frankie for Big Business.I kept thinking that I was watching The Stranger Love of Martha Ivers - Part 2. It was okey, I guess.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartJohn DallFarley GrangerTwo men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death.Probably one of the best Hitchcock l've seen. The suspense, the dialogues, the innovative camera work, the technicolor....It's basically about these two dudes that commit the "perfect murder" and invites the victim's guests and also the man who inspired them to commit murder (Stewart).
- DirectorVittorio De SicaStarsLamberto MaggioraniEnzo StaiolaLianella CarellIn post-war Italy, a working-class man's bicycle is stolen, endangering his efforts to find work. He and his son set out to find it.ltalian Neorealism. A man and his son go around the town, looking for their stolen bike. A basic story, but you really feel for the charachters.
- DirectorCharles MartinStarsLaraine DayKirk DouglasKeenan WynnA romance novelist appoints a would-be writer as his secretary. Although she is initially dismayed by his work ethic and playboy attitude, they begin to fall in love.Wait, Kirk Douglas in a romantic comedy? Yes, and since l don't like romantic comedies that much, l won't give it a higher grade.
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsOlivia de HavillandMontgomery CliftRalph RichardsonA naive young woman falls for a handsome young man her emotionally abusive father suspects is only a fortune hunter.Olivia does a great performance here as a timid girl, who is seduced by a man (Monty Clift). Her father suspects he's only after his money.
- DirectorPhil KarlsonStarsLon McCallisterPeggy Ann GarnerPreston Foster1933. A city boy arrives in his late mother's birthplace to discover the locals have been pestered by drought, old fights and a cougar. He turns out to be pivotal in all of these. The plot may be forgettable, but it's slightly compensated by the fact that some of the scenes have much suspense, so that's a plus.
- DirectorJohn BerryStarsRichard BasehartAudrey TotterCyd CharisseA meek pharmacist creates an alternate identity under which he plans to murder the bullying liquor salesman who has become his wife's lover.A man gets his girls stolen away by another dude, and wants his revenge. Audrey Totter is perfect for this role. A good movie.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsWilliam HoldenGloria SwansonErich von StroheimA screenwriter develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star determined to make a triumphant return.I remember liking this movie a lot when I saw it. But now, it feels as though I need a second viewing to really judge it. It's about a former silent movie star who got her career destroyed when "talkies" arrived. This has now made a huge impact on her mental health...
- DirectorIrving PichelStarsMickey RooneyJeanne CagneyBarbara BatesAfter taking 20 dollars from his employer to go on a date with plans to repay it the next day, an auto mechanic falls into increasingly disastrous circumstances for more and more money which rapidly spirals out of his control. An enjoyable and underrated film noir with Mickey Rooney. Did you know that the girl in it is Jimmy Cagney's sister? See the resemblance?
- DirectorIrving RapperStarsJane WymanKirk DouglasGertrude LawrenceMerchant marine officer Tom Wingfield reminisces about his life in St. Louis where he had lived with his nagging mother Amanda and crippled shy sister Laura.A story about Jane Wyman as a shy girl, Kirk Douglas as a charismatic man. an unbearable mother and a frustrated son.
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsKirk DouglasEleanor ParkerWilliam BendixOn one day in the 21st Precinct squad room, assorted characters form a backdrop for the troubles of hard-nosed Detective Jim McLeod. The police stations in the 50's sure were busy. I can't reveal the plot too much, but it was a nice film. Lee Grant is pretty funny in it.
- DirectorLou BreslowStarsDick PowellPeggy DowJoyce HoldenAn ex-army dog inherits a fortune from his eccentric millionaire owner, and which is poisoned, asks the leader in the heaven for animals to send him back to Earth, as a human private investigator, to solve his own murder.A dog comes back as a man (Dick Powell) to find out who killed him...l'm not joking, this is the plot...All l could think of during this movie was "whatever happened to Peggy Dow"?
- DirectorJean NegulescoStarsJeanne CrainDale RobertsonMitzi GaynorA young woman enters college and learns some hard truths about sorority life, including snobbery and the cruelty of hazing.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsFarley GrangerRobert WalkerRuth RomanA psychopathic man tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder by submitting to his plan to kill the other's most-hated person. The character Bruno is so interesting, that you almost want him to succeed! One of my favourite classic films, so far.
- DirectorFelix E. FeistStarsKirk DouglasEve MillerPatrice WymoreA Quaker colony tries to save the giant sequoias from a timber baron. For every brilliant movie, there's an equally horrible one...Even Kirk Douglas himself hated this one. lt looked very amateurish, both the plot, the acting and the camera quality. Horrible....
- DirectorPhil KarlsonStarsJohn PayneColeen GrayPreston FosterAn ex-con trying to go straight is framed for a million dollar armored car robbery and must go to Mexico in order to unmask the real culprits.Very boring Film Noir. Also, l had trouble figuring out what was going on...
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsGregory PeckAudrey HepburnEddie AlbertA bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome.Reminded me of "lt Happened One Night". This one is a little better, though.
- DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartJennifer JonesGina LollobrigidaOn their way to Africa are a group of rogues who hope to get rich there, and a seemingly innocent British couple. They meet and things happen...Confusing, very confusing. What was the movie about? The only Bogart movie l've seen, hopefully there are better ones out there.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.I had tremendously high hopes for Rear Window. POSSIBLE SPOILER: l kept waiting for a twist. l didn't get any...But not just that, the whole plot could've been done alot better. It's too bad, l really wanted to like this one.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRay MillandGrace KellyRobert CummingsA former tennis star arranges the murder of his adulterous wife.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKirk DouglasRalph MeekerAdolphe MenjouAfter a failed attack on a German position, a general orders three soldiers, chosen at random, court-martialed for cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them.A mix between "The Ox-bow lncident" and "12 Angry Men", as it deals with the theme of prosecuting potentially innocent people. The best Kubrick l've seen so far.
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsHenry FondaLee J. CobbMartin BalsamThe jury in a New York City murder trial is frustrated by a single member whose skeptical caution forces them to more carefully consider the evidence before jumping to a hasty verdict.12 middle aged men sitting around a table a whole movie...lt's probably boring, right? Wrong, this movie is incredibly well written and keeps you interested for every second. It has a good message, interesting characters, the overall flow of the scenes is good and the ending leaves you with a bit of ambiguity (in a good way). And also, l like courtroom dramas in general. The only thing missing was a cute female juror, but l guess you can't have everything. :(
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartKim NovakBarbara Bel GeddesA former San Francisco police detective juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.Hitchcock, can't you just make up your mind whether you wanna make good or bad films? Because you're giving me both....
Contrived plot, stupid scenes...this one should NOT be on any top 10 lists. Especially the second half was bad. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsCary GrantEva Marie SaintJames MasonA New York City advertising executive goes on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and falls for a woman whose loyalties he begins to doubt.Oh? You actually listened to me, Hitchcock...thanks! This movie was a real upgrade from a certain movie that starts with a V.....Cary Grant gets mistaken for another man, and a real adventure begins...The airplane scene is a classic, and Eva Marie Saint is beautiful.
- DirectorOtto PremingerStarsJames StewartLee RemickBen GazzaraAn upstate Michigan lawyer defends a soldier who claims he killed an innkeeper due to temporary insanity after the victim raped his wife. What is the truth, and will he win his case?l like courtroom dramas if they are well written. This one is, and it's quite the debate going on between Stewart and the rest. I think this was one of the first movies in the Code era to use certain "controversial" words. Jimmy Stewart should be more known for this one than Mr Smith Goes to Washington, IMO.
- DirectorDouglas SirkStarsLana TurnerJohn GavinSandra DeeAn aspiring white actress takes in an African American widow whose mixed-race daughter is desperate to be seen as white.I dislike the concept of remaking other movies...l think movies should be left alone, and directors should be creative enough to come up with something new. But l have to judge this film on its own, and l gotta say l wasn't as moved as in the 1934 version. l think too much focus was put on Lana Turner's character, and it felt like they tried to balance out 2 different plots.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.l like how Hitchcock started out with a storyline and then does something completely unpredictable with it. Even though l sorta knew what was gonna happen, it's one of the worst kept secrets in cinema history.... Perkins did a convincing job as Norman!
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsJack LemmonShirley MacLaineFred MacMurrayA Manhattan insurance clerk tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts, but complications and a romance of his own ensue."When life gives you lemon, you make lemonade. But when life gives you Lemmon, you borrow his apartment and make out with your girl in there".
There, the best way to sum up the plot. lt's a solid comedy. - DirectorMichael PowellStarsKarlheinz BöhmAnna MasseyMoira ShearerA young man murders women, using a movie camera to film their dying expressions of terror.A British movie about a man who films women as he kills them. lt sounds like a scary film, but l didn't feel scared. lt's good but could've been better.
- DirectorStanley KramerStarsSpencer TracyBurt LancasterRichard WidmarkIn 1948, an American court in occupied Germany tries four Nazis judged for war crimes.A courtroom drama with lots of stars. Tracy is great, Montgomery Clift is great, Max Schell is great. Widmark is great. Heck, we even got Shatner, Garland and Dietrich in the lineup. l bet the title reveals what the movie is about.
- DirectorDavid MillerStarsKirk DouglasGena RowlandsWalter MatthauA fiercely independent cowboy gets himself locked up in prison to escape with an old friend.A cowboy is on the hideout from the cops. With him, he has his beloved horse. Many scenes were too slow-paced, but the ending is superb. This is Kirk Douglas' own favourite Kirk Douglas movie.
- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.Speaking of slow-paced.......They should've made the movie alot shorter, then it would get higher grade from me. Admittedly, some films require longer time to tell a story, but l noticed some shots that were unnecessary long. Sometimes less is more. Still, it's a pretty good movie, to be fair.
- DirectorRobert MulliganStarsGregory PeckJohn MegnaFrank OvertonAtticus Finch, a widowed lawyer in Depression-era Alabama, defends a Black man against an undeserved rape charge, and tries to educate his young children against prejudice.
- DirectorRobert AldrichStarsBette DavisJoan CrawfordVictor BuonoA former child star torments her paraplegic sister in their decaying Hollywood mansion.Well, whatever DID happen to Baby Jane? Well, she must've seen Sunset Boulevard and decided to become even creepier than Norma Desmond.
And to be honest, l think this one is alot better than SB (but as l said, l wanna watch that movie again for a better judgement). Especially as we know that Davis/Crawford were enemies in real life, l was prepared to see them actually kill each other off, lol. - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJames MasonShelley WintersSue LyonA middle-aged college professor becomes infatuated with a 14-year-old girl.Never read the book so this won't be a comparative review. So what did l think of it?
A great disappointment. Never once did it seem that Lolita was into James Mason. There were too many scenes that could've been edited better, if it wasn't for the censorship back in those days.
And Peter Seller's character was pointless. Not a bad movie, but not great either. - DirectorStanley KramerStarsSpencer TracyMilton BerleEthel MermanA group of motorists witnesses a car crash in the California desert, and after the driver's dying words indicate the location of a hidden stash of loot, they turn against each in a race across the state to get to it.Almost all the comedic geniuses were there!
Several people look for money that's buried somwhere. Who can get there first? A funny movie which inspired the modern version Rat Race (2004). - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRod TaylorTippi HedrenJessica TandyA wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people. After seeing the movie, l could never look at birds the same way as before...But seriously speaking, for an early 60's movie, the special effects are great and the idea's innovative. l also like the fact that the birds act like this without any logical reason.
- DirectorGeorge SidneyStarsDick Van DykeAnn-MargretJanet LeighA rock singer travels to a small Ohio town to make his "farewell" television performance and kiss his biggest fan before he is drafted.A silly musical with Dick van Dyke, Ann Margret and Janet Leigh. Not my type of film. l only watched it because l like the Dick van Dyke Show...
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsTippi HedrenSean ConneryMartin GabelMark marries Marnie although she is a habitual thief and has serious psychological problems, and tries to help her confront and resolve them. This movie was strange, neither of the main characters were likeable and the story didn't hold my interest.
- DirectorRuss MeyerStarsTura SatanaHajiLori WilliamsThree go-go dancers holding a young girl hostage come across a crippled old man living with his two sons in the desert. After learning he's hiding a sum of cash around, the women start scheming on him.Where do l begin with this one? l can appreciate the fact that this is an experimental/exploitation movie, made right after the Code era ended. l can also appreciate some of the hot girls in this movie (except Tura, she was just creepy in this).
But let's face it, the movie doesn't have a very interesting story to tell. - DirectorStanley KramerStarsSpencer TracySidney PoitierKatharine HepburnA couple's attitudes are challenged when their daughter introduces them to her African-American fiancé.A white woman brings her fiance home to meet her parents (Tracy & Hepburn). The man, Poitier, is black. Since this is the 60's, some issues arise. This was Tracy's last movie before he died, so l understand if Katharine wasn't comfortable with watching this movie. What did l think of this film? lt was good, but it would be much more interesting if the character didn't have a perfect "resumé", if you know what l mean.
