Horror Movies of 2016
These are all the horror movies from 2016 that I've heard about, whether I've seen or not. I count some thrillers as horror. IMDB lists 2015 for some of these titles because they showed at festivals that year but only became theatrically available or were released to VOD or DVD in 2016.

- DirectorRob ZombieStarsMalcolm McDowellRichard BrakeJeff Daniel PhillipsFive carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, hellish compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.I haven't and probably won't see this film since I loathe Rob Zombie's movies. Still, others have said this was better than some of his other work, so I'm not going to write it off completely yet.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.Superb performances by John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead intensify the psychological tension of this movie, and Goodman's restrained menace makes for a great "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of scenario. Do you stay trapped inside a bunker with an unbalanced man who seems to have brought you to safety, or do you take your chances facing a (possibly) deadly, apocalyptic outside world? Saw this at the theater. 8/10
- DirectorVictor ZarcoffStarsNeville ArchambaultSean CarriganPJ McCabeA newlywed couple, move into a new house across the country, only to find out that their marital issues are the least of their problems. Unbeknownst to them, their grim and lascivious landlord has been spying on them from day one.The premise of a landlord spying on a newlywed couple isn't super interesting to me, so I didn't end up seeing this one. Probably will wait until it's available for free on Amazon Prime or Netflix.
- DirectorDarren Lynn BousmanStarsJessica LowndesJoe AndersonLin ShayeAn investigative reporter teams up with a police officer to solve the mystery of why a seemingly good man murdered her sister's family.Premise sounds intriguing: a house constructed from rooms where tragedies occurred. One reviewer describes it as, "part neo-noir detective film and part haunted house movie," which is promising. But reviews have been fairly negative, and the same reviewer says, "the two never really seem to meld together and it comes across as jarring at times." Will probably see it eventually, but not high on my priority list.
- DirectorDanny PerezStarsNatasha LyonneChloë SevignyMeg TillyIn a desolate community full of drug-addled Marines and rumors of kidnapping, a wild-eyed stoner named Lou wakes up after a wild night of partying with symptoms of a strange illness and recurring visions as she struggles to get a grip on reality while stories of conspiracy spread.Haven't heard much about this Canadian flick. Strange considering the cast (Natasha Lyonne [Orange Is the New Black], Chloë Sevigny [American Horror Story], and Meg Tilly [who I best know for her roles in Carmilla and Psycho II]. The premise, from Wikipedia: "The film follows a drug-addled woman in a remote Michigan town who becomes pregnant after taking a strange drug." Reviews seem lukewarm, but this still looks worth checking out.
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsBrian CoxEmile HirschOphelia LovibondA father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the cause of death of a young woman who was apparently harboring dark secrets.Atmospheric, mysterious, creepy. Kept me guessing. The suggested explanation of what happened to Jane Doe didn't fully work for me, but it's definitely an intriguing idea. 8/10
- DirectorOwen EgertonStarsHaley Lu RichardsonDon MostNoah SeganA man who receives an early Christmas present from his girlfriend blacks out only to wake up in a terrifying nightmare.Noah Segan plays a man who wakes up a few days before Christmas to find his girlfriend dead, with no memory of how she died. As he tries to keep her death a secret and figure out what happened, the film plays out a downward spiral of disturbing, unforeseen complications. More of an indie thriller than horror, though there are some creepy moments. Available for free on Amazon Prime, with a slim running time of 1h 14min. 6/10
- DirectorJordan GallandStarsLouisa KrauseWhitney AbleDeborah RushA young woman recovers from a demonic possession.More of a fun, campy film than really creepy or scary. Ava must attend a sort of "AA for people who did bad things while they were possessed group." Yeah, it's a silly idea but it works surprisingly well if you can suspend disbelief. Streaming on Netflix. 6.5/10
- DirectorCan EvrenolStarsMehmet CerrahogluGörkem KasalErgun KuyucuA squad of unsuspecting cops go through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building.Strange Turkish film about a bunch of crude, macho cops who stumble into a house that has a gateway to Hell in it. The film starts out kind of slow, and the cop characters are somewhat annoying, but once they get to the house, things get pretty intense (and weird). Special kudos to Mehmet Cerrahoglu, the actor who plays "Father," for his creepy menace. Some of the violence was a bit over-the-top, but I was intrigued. Hope director Can Evrenol gets to do more horror. 7/10
