- DirectorBrian LargeStarsAnna NetrebkoElina GarancaElisabeth KulmanIn the summer of 1830 the impresarios of Teatro Carcano contacted Donizetti and asked him to compose a new opera for the season's opening. At the moment of signing the contract Donizetti still ignored the subject of the new opera, but he knew that the librettist would be Felice Romani and the female protagonist Giuditta Pasta. Success was resounding and unanimous, also with the critics. Donizetti had indeed reached artistic maturity. Anna Bolena tells a human drama of solitude and oppression; it is a work of centered psychological introspection. Donizetti's first great scene of madness is one of the most moving and powerful of the whole history of opera. The new theatrical element introduced by Anna Bolena is that the protagonist's death is not a consequence of moral duty or divine justice, but a plain act of cruelty. A tragedy through and through, then: intense, deep and profoundly romantic. Anna Bolena is a significant work in the history of opera, as well as in Donizetti's own personal history. In this Teatro Donizetti di Bergamo production, Dimitra Theodossiou stands out as a fine interpreter both as a singer and as an actress.

- DirectorBrian LargeStarsAnna NetrebkoHelene SchneidermanDiane PilcherLa Traviata stands or falls on its lead singers and in Norah Amsellem and Rolando Villazon this 2005 Salzburg Festival performance has a pair whose electric interactions and brilliant singing are irresistible. If Amsellem can't quite provide the vocal bloom of the great Violettas of the past, hers is a lovely voice used with intelligence and dramatic intensity and she has the coloratura chops to deliver her Act I showpieces with flair. Villazon's tenor has ping on top, terrific color, and an impressive range of rubato, dynamic shadings, and interesting phrasing that makes Alfredo's music sound newly minted. The Germont is Thomas Hampson, no Verdi baritone but an astute singer and actor. Chorus and smaller roles are fine, the orchestra first-rate. Carlo Rizzi has odd notions about the music (usually too fast, sometimes way too slow) but this Traviata triumphs despite his conducting.

- 2006– Not Rated8.4 (50)TV EpisodeDirectorGary HalvorsonStarsPatrick SummersBeverly SillsRenée FlemingEngland, 1640s. Civil war and politics interfere with Elvira's plans to marry Arturo, because he is helping Queen Elizabeth escape from the rebels. Elvira doesn't understand any of this, so she goes stark raving mad and sings a cadenza while lying flat on her back, her head hanging upside-down over the edge of the stage. Fearing that she might die of grief or fall over into the orchestra pit, Uncle Giorgio and Riccardo sing the complete version of "Suoni la tromba," including the repeats, and no cuts. Not to be upstaged by any of this, Arturo finally returns from his mission and explains everything by singing a high F above C, the highest note ever composed for tenor voice. There is much rejoicing. It's non-stop, nail-biting action, and Beverly Sills is on hand to provide commentary on the drama.

A top-flight cast brings a thoroughly modern perspective to the chaotic lives and tragic loves of the young Bohemians, while conductor Daniele Gatti draws out every detail of this endlessly inventive score, with luxurious playing from the Wiener Philharmoniker. "Ms. Netrebko's Mimì emerged as thoroughly genuine and gorgeously sung. Mr. Beczala's Rodolfo was a perfect match" (The New York Times).
- DirectorTiziano ManciniStarsDaniel BarenboimPlácido DomingoDavit GharibyanGiuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore One of the most enduringly popular operas in the repertoire, Il Trovatore was first seen at Rome's Teatro Apollo in 1853. Together with Rigoletto and La Traviata, it forms the "trilogy" of works that premiered in rapid succession over a period of just two years and firmly established Verdi as the leading opera composer of his time. The challenges of Il Trovatore's leading roles famously led Enrico Caruso to remark that all you needed to stage it were the "four best singers in the world."
