- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMatt DamonJessica ChastainKristen WiigAn astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.I've never been more inspired by a fictional character. Very close to a perfect movie.
- DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleSteve CarellRyan GoslingIn 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the United States mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is.Clever. Funny. And had a lot of heart. And an awesome cast. Complex financial descriptions have never been so interesting.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan. The best action sequences of the year coupled with comedy that perfectly matched my sense of humour. Not perfect, but a lot of fun!
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.Such a good concept. Execution was very good, but could have been a little more fun/funny.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.Great characters. Great dialogue. Great action. Okay plot. Did very well to meet the extremely high expectations.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.I love a fun and funny movie. And I love good characters. And I love heists. This was a lot of fun.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.Great concept and cast. Small scale and self contained. A captivating thriller, but not necessarily highly re-watchable.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRebecca FergusonJeremy RennerEthan and his team take on their most impossible mission yet when they have to eradicate an international rogue organization as highly skilled as they are and committed to destroying the IMF.Some cool missions (as expected), but the battle of wits was a new and unexpected element that was a lot of fun.
- DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardTy SimpkinsA new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree. So much fun! I can't remember the last time I cheered at a movie as if it was a footy match. Had obvious flaws, but was a lot of fun.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.Amazing action. Amazing. And a really cool and well developed world. Heaps of subtleties. But the plot was definitely lacking.
- DirectorEtan CohenStarsWill FerrellKevin HartAlison BrieWhen millionaire James King is jailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars. It's a dumb comedy, but it was much cleverer than expected. Good cast. And had some great moments.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.Amazing characters, dialogue and tension. And great storytelling. But a touch over the top in some parts, which detracted from the experience. Would love to see a MA15+ version. (Rather than the R18+ theatrical cut.)
- DirectorJames WanStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerDwayne JohnsonDeckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for his comatose brother. It was fun. Way over the top - but at least it's self aware. Best F&F movie since the original.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDaniel CraigChristoph WaltzLéa SeydouxA cryptic message from James Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover the existence of a sinister organisation named SPECTRE. With a new threat dawning, Bond learns the terrible truth about the author of all his pain in his most recent missions. Was a lot of fun when I was watching it. But the plot holes in the last half hour detracted from it a bit.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss and a team of rebels from District 13 prepare for the final battle that will decide the fate of Panem.Had good moments. But had a lot of elements that annoyed me. A good lesson in why not to unnecessarily split movies into two.
- DirectorJeremy GarelickStarsKevin HartJosh GadKaley CuocoTwo weeks shy of his wedding, a socially awkward guy enters into a charade by hiring the owner of a company that provides best men for grooms in need.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsGeorge ClooneyBritt RobertsonHugh LaurieBound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory. There was an awesome 10 minute sequence surrounded by a lot of average.
- DirectorDavid WnendtStarsOliver MasucciThomas M. KöpplMarc-Marvin IsraelAdolf Hitler wakes up in the 21st century. He quickly gains media attention, but while Germany finds him hilarious and charming, Hitler makes some serious observations about society. An interesting concept. Fascinating. It felt like a half book-to-movie adaption, and half like reality TV. I think that the non-scripted moments outshone the scripted scenes.
- DirectorFrank CoraciStarsAdam SandlerTerry CrewsJorge GarciaAn outlaw who was raised by Native Americans discovers that he has five half-brothers. Together the men go on a mission to find their wayward, deadbeat dad.I liked the idea. But would have been a lot better if Sandler wasn't playing the straight man. The fun of a Sandler movie is seeing him go nuts!
- DirectorGlenn FicarraJohn RequaStarsWill SmithMargot RobbieRodrigo SantoroIn the midst of veteran con man Nicky's latest scheme, a woman from his past - now an accomplished femme fatale - shows up and throws his plans for a loop.Pretty disappointing. I really like Will Smith movies and heist movies, but this movie was a stinker
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsLily JamesCate BlanchettRichard MaddenWhen her father unexpectedly dies, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her scheming stepsisters. Never one to give up hope, Ella's fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger. There wasn't necessarily anything bad about this movie. But there wasn't anything good either. Soooo vanilla.
- DirectorRobert SchwentkeStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortTheo JamesBeatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side.Just a really poor movie. Plot. Acting. Special effects. Pacing. I'll acknowledge that I'm not the target audience. But it felt like the studio didn't really try.
- DirectorElizabeth BanksStarsAnna KendrickRebel WilsonHailee SteinfeldAfter a humiliating command performance at The Kennedy Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform. The first was one of my favorite chick flicks. It had a plot, it had characters, it had movie references and a magician. And with the Eurovision type premise, the sequel had a lot of potential. But it was actually just 90 minutes of unfunny Fat-Amy jokes. Disappointing.
