Meanwhile, Cannonball has his own problems as he is pursued by twins Melinda and Matilda and he thinks they are the same girl. Bill, gets the evidence he needs when Kilgrain and Ewell use the marked money to further their plans.

Later, Jake Kilgore pretends to want to buy the Saunders place and, when ordered off, he shoots Saunders and leaves behind a gun that will incriminate Old Mitch. Bill arrives a few minutes later, learns from his dying father what happened and takes after Jake. A running gun fight ends in a canyon where the two men struggle hand to hand, and Jake falls dead from a bullet from his own gun intended for Bill. Meanwhile, Matt and his gang ride to Ole Mitch's place, intending to lynch him for killing Saunders, Bill gets there first and drives them off. Bart, one of the henchmen, drops behind to spy on the newcomer. He hears Bill tell Kate, who had also came to warn Ole Mitch, about Jake's death. Bart hurries to tell his boss, and when Kate returns home Matt beats her, ties her to a chair, and then sends two of his henchmen, posing as deputy sheriffs, to arrest Bill for the death of Jake. Bill, over the protests of Sammy Lou, gives up his guns and the henchmen start him off for what is to be a rendezvous with a lynching party. Kate gets free and rides to get help from Old Mitch, Cannonball and other ranchers. Bill is about to be hanged when Kate, Sammy Lou, Mitch and the others arrive. In the exchange of bullets, Kate is killed by her brother Matt, who escapes. Bill pursues him and kills him in a gun duel. Peace is restored to the community and Bill settles down on the ranch he inherited from his father, with Sammy Lou not far from his side.

The hostile townspeople gather and are bent upon carrying out the law that says a killer horse must be shot. Red demands that "Thunder" be given a trial, and then (in flashback) tells the story of how he first found "Thunder." It was six months ago at the recruiting office for Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, where the horse was pointed out as a potential killer that no one would ever be able to ride. Red accepted the challenge and was given the horse by Teddy Roosevelt after a wild ride. Red wants to join the Rough Riders, but Roosevelt tells him that horse thieves in Red's home state of Wyoming are disrupting the Army's supply service and that Red is the only man capable of stopping them. Red returns home to find the Duchess arguing with fellow-rancher Major Harding over a line-fence dispute, and concludes that someone is using them as dupes to cover some activity. In the town saloon, Blake, the Major's ranch foreman, and two henchmen, Dow and Luce are discussing how they let one of the Duchess' horses, with the Major's brand newly burned on it, wander back onto the Duchess' ranch to throw suspicion on the Major. Red beats Blake in a fight and calls a meeting to settle the dispute. Dow steals the Major's horses and Red finds "Thunder" missing and assumes he was also rustled. In reality, "Thunder" had followed the stolen herd to Box Canyon and was captured. Blake tries to ride "Thunder" but is thrown and then beats the horse unmercifully. "Thunder" gets away, Red finds him, sees the whip marks, and vows to find the owner of the saddle that "Thunder" is wearing. The trail leads to the Arizona town where Red is now telling the townspeople what prompted "Thunder" to attack Blake.

When Melinda and her niece, Penny, discover where the baby is, Jimmy enlists their aid. The sheriff discovers that Melinda has the baby and jails her, Jimmy and Dusty. Using his medicine show troupe as a diversion, "Lasses" breaks them out of jail. They search the doctor's office and find that he had the family killed after he discovered oil on their property, and is waiting to get custody of the baby so he can sign valuable contracts with an oil company.

Jimmy and his pals are charged with the crimes, but escape, and with the help of the sheriff, prove that Kaley and Weldon are behind the rustling gang.

Realizing that he doesn't have much time with Red snooping around, the western Bluebeard persuades the Duchess to return to England with him, meet him at the railroad station to be married and, oh yes, bring her money with her.

She is eager to sell to Colton but doesn't realize that he intends to force all the ranchers out of business once he has control of the line.

The undercover Mounties soon get on the trail of Morgan, Howell and Cheval, the illegal beaver trappers. While searching for evidence in the trading post ran by MacGregor, Mike is surprised by Morgan and Cheval and is killed. Rod closes the trail that reveals Oliver as the leader of the gang. Chinook takes care of Oliver, and Rod arrests Morgan and the others.

On Chief Barton's order, Hamon shoots ex-Rangers Murphy and Payson, so they can be blamed for a raid on Sheila's ranch.

Town banker Roger Claine, is the mastermind behind the gang led by the Mystery Rider and Slade, and is having an affair with waitress Cora, and has promised her he will kill Slade when they have enough money. Beth is shot by Dave in an aborted holdup that reveals her to be the Mystery Rider, working with Claine in a spirit of revenge, thinking that her uncle had stolen the stageline from her father.

In Rim Rock, neither Pop nor Martha believe Jim's story about Jimmy being an impostor. Jimmy is actually the son of Rim Rock storekeeper Pete Ingram who had waited for years to present Jimmy as Fallon's son and get control of Fallon's fortune.

The job backfires and the first Dawson is shot, but before the dies, he talks and enables Nevada and Sandy to make arrests and clear McGee of any charges.

In Carson City, Nevada he meets Mary who has been fired from her job as a blackjack dealer, and she joins him posing as his wife. From the moment Ford and the girl start their journey they are often threatened by three following Arabs, Hassan, Kafan and Ghazili. Ford and Mary manage to outwit and elude them and finally reach a settlement of California Mission Indians during a Christmas Eve religious ceremony. When the three trailing Arabs arrive, they are received by the awe-struck Indians as reincarnations of the three Bibical wise men. The Arabs quickly take advantage of the situation and try to force Ford to hand over his gold to them as a "gift" offering. Ford, instead, makes a gift of a handful of gold to an old Indian conducting the ceremony. In gratitude the old Indian provides Ford and his "squaw" with a bodyguard for the rest of their journey. The next day, the Arabs try to close in on Ford, Mary and their guard, and the Arabs are killed. When Ford and Mary reach California, they plan to make their marriage arrangement legal.

A number of citizens have been killed for no apparent reason, and Doctor Applegate has sent for Nevada and Sandy to solve the mystery killings. Applegate is killed after he returns from a prospecting trip, but not before he has deposited some of the gold he found in the Wells Fargo safe. J.D. Edwards, in reality the gang leader, means to acquire the property containing the gold that Hilton, originally, and Applegate later found. Nevada and Sandy learn of the location in time to keep the ranchers from selling to Edwards. The latter tries to shoot Nevada, but Joel draws first and kills him. The ranchers are told there is gold on their property, and the whole gang is apprehended.
