Pixar Films Ranked
Rewatched all Oct-Nov 2022 except Onward and Lightyear (saw recently enough) and reorganized list some. I think the Top Ten are worth rewatching again in the future. Top Six especially. The rest? Meh.

- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world.9/10, such a fantastic film. It is such a treat that a "family film" could have such great story and characters. Only reason I don't have it a 10 is a few lines of banter make me wince but otherwise can't fault it at all.
- DirectorJohn LasseterStarsTom HanksTim AllenDon RicklesA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom.9/10, the original pixar film was certainly one of the best, plenty of fun and heart.
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.9/10, Joy and Sadness are not only the two main characters but also the two primary emotions the film generates and intertwine fantastically.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonHolly HunterSarah VowellThe Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.9/10, A sequel that comes close to matching the original
- DirectorPete DocterDavid SilvermanLee UnkrichStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanMary GibbsIn order to power the city, monsters have to scare children so that they scream. However, the children are toxic to the monsters, and after a child gets through, two monsters realize things may not be what they think.8/10, this pair of monsters certainly brings the laughs and Boo melts the heart.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsBen BurttElissa KnightJeff GarlinIn the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.8/10, sure the first half is stronger than second half but the story is overall cute and inspirational at the same time. A real fun Pixar entry.
- DirectorAndrew StantonLee UnkrichStarsAlbert BrooksEllen DeGeneresAlexander GouldAfter his son is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, a timid clownfish sets out on a journey to bring him home.8/10, As fun as the fish are in the film, after rewatching this what still sticks out are the seagulls, minor of minor characters that they are.
- DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.8/10, I find this film pretty much to be tied with its predecessor in terms of enjoyment
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.8/10, Second watch didn't quite hit as it did the first time around but the gang is fun to watch and is clearly the best Toy Story since the first. Ending does still touch the emotions.
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.8.0/10, the start of this movie is clearly the most emotional 5 minutes or so that Pixar as produced. Easy 10/10 for beginning. The rest of the film is not so strong but still had its moments especially when referencing the old mans memories of his wife. The kid not so much. The dog Alpha voice reminds me of Foamy the Squirrel.
- DirectorPete DocterKemp PowersStarsJamie FoxxTina FeyGraham NortonJoe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.7/10, Even after watching the Pitch Meeting that exposed the plot holes I still find this quite a decent watch. Sure the middle is flabby but the rest is quite fun.
- DirectorEnrico CasarosaStarsJacob TremblayJack Dylan GrazerEmma BermanOn the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human.7/10, was a decent film, young friendship growing, being tested, coming of age etc.
- DirectorJohn LasseterAsh BrannonLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackWhen Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.7/10, the climax of the film is highly entertaining but I have to admit that the film as a whole just didn't grab me like like the terrific original Toy Story did. Woody and his origins and the Prospector character just can't compare.
- DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.7/10, Coco is beautifully animated with heart and great music but the more emotional moments only gave a glancing blow to me. Somehow managed to irritate me as much as move me, I think the plotline of banning music so enthusiastically is the root of it, never bought the conflict no matter what what Miguel's great-great granddad supposedly did.
- DirectorJosh CooleyStarsTom HanksTim AllenAnnie PottsWhen a new toy called "Forky" joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.7/10, I feel like these movies are getting a bit repetitive but there is still fun to be had. Not sure about that Forky character though...
- DirectorBrad BirdJan PinkavaStarsBrad GarrettLou RomanoPatton OswaltA rat who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous Paris restaurant.7/10, cooking scenes were fun and the rats engaging but the human Linguini that Patton Oswalt controlled was as interesting as a wet lasagna noodle. Female chef/girlfriend was feisty at least, more focus on her would have worked than his boring presence.
- DirectorJohn LasseterJoe RanftStarsOwen WilsonBonnie HuntPaul NewmanOn the way to the biggest race of his life, a hotshot rookie race car gets stranded in a rundown town and learns that winning isn't everything in life.7.0/10, didn't enjoy this as much as the first time around, more silly than anything with standard arrogant character learning humility, becoming better... person... car... with an eye rolling line in here about "not driving to save time but driving to have a good time" or some nonsense.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsTom HollandChris PrattJulia Louis-DreyfusIn a magical world full of technological advances, elven brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot set out on an adventure to resurrect their late father for a day.6/10, Onward was alright but the emotion that this tried to lay on me simply passed me by. One time watch.
- DirectorMark AndrewsBrenda ChapmanSteve PurcellStarsKelly MacdonaldBilly ConnollyEmma ThompsonDetermined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.6/10, Dropping 7 to 6 on rewatch, started out decently enough, always appreciate spunky girl characters but the story just didn't impress me at all and left me emotionally flat despite a couple suspenseful scenes. Ending just left me with a shrug.
- DirectorPeter SohnStarsJeffrey WrightFrances McDormandMaleah Nipay-PadillaIn a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend.6/10, Perhaps the most generic throwaway of the Pixar films. Forgettable film really and nothing to annoy me much either. A shrug of the shoulders is what this one earns.
- DirectorAngus MacLaneStarsChris EvansKeke PalmerPeter SohnWhile spending years attempting to return home, marooned Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg who are attempting to steal his fuel source.6/10, Not as bad as I thought it was going to be is best I can say. Not at all what I was expecting for a Buzz "origin" story, a disappointment for sure.
- DirectorBrian FeeStarsOwen WilsonCristela AlonzoChris CooperLightning McQueen sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he's still the best race car in the world.6/10, low 6 pixar film, thought would end up a high 6 on rewatch but the conclusion had too much cheese imo for me to justify it to myself.
- DirectorJohn LasseterAndrew StantonStarsKevin SpaceyDave FoleyJulia Louis-DreyfusA misfit ant, looking for "warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers, recruits a group of bugs that turn out to be an inept circus troupe.6.0/10, dropping from 7 to 6. These bug characters just fell flat for me and the story just felt so generic. Wondering if rating this too high actually.
- DirectorPeter SohnStarsLeah LewisMamoudou AthieRonnie Del CarmenFollows Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, earth- and air-residents live together.5/10, A dull outing from Pixar, or Disney really so I shouldn't be surprised that they have no talent any longer. Just a ripoff of Zootopia and some Inside Out and we get this forgettable film. Pathetic story on discrimination and two characters that shouldn't be together, "fire and water don't mix!" Of course in this case they aren't regular people but are made of of things that can literally kill each other so the metaphor falls flat. Much of the film has them afraid to touch each other, especially from the fire girl end, "we don't know what will happen!". Really? No fire and water people have ever touched each other in history? The four elemental "races" are all jammed together on the train! Absurd.
- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.5/10. Felt more nonsensical than anything and not sure if the muddled message I think Turning Red had is a good one, pass on this.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.4/10, Bumping this up a point on rewatch not quite as terrible as the first time around. OF course that hardly makes it good, found Monsters U to be more ordinary bad instead of hate myself while watching it bad. Simply not fun or funny to be watched. A quite unnecessary prequel.
- DirectorJohn LasseterBradford LewisStarsOwen WilsonLarry the Cable GuyMichael CaineStar race car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race. But the road to the championship becomes rocky as Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.3/10. Well that was terrible. Mader as a main character was just a painful experience. Sequels can have a tendency to go to absurd over the top lengths to try and "top" the predecessor and this is a perfect example of that. The whole spy plotline was simply dumb.
