- DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsHans van TongerenRenée SoutendijkToon AgterbergSeveral Dutch teenagers realize the cruel difference between dreams and reality.Few years before becoming Hollywood's cult director, Paul Verhoeven directed great films in his native Holland. This is the best example of his early work, a symbolic tale about essence of human nature.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsKen'ichi EndôShungiku UchidaKazushi WatanabeA troubled and perverted family find their lives intruded by a mysterious stranger who seems to help find a balance in their disturbing natures.Less known film from famous Takashi Miike, made in the peak period of his creativity. Dark and twisted comedy about family ties with some truly shocking moments.
- DirectorBruce RobinsonStarsRichard E. GrantPaul McGannRichard GriffithsIn 1969, two substance-abusing, unemployed actors retreat to the countryside for a holiday that proves disastrous.Cult comedy that you really need to watch. Filled with brilliant characters and unforgettable dialog, this is a must see for all art school students.
- DirectorAlexandre BustilloJulien MauryStarsAlysson ParadisJean-Baptiste TabourinClaude LuléFour months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.Absolutely brilliant French horror, with tons of blood and gore. But it isn't your usual torture porn. Gore is not the point, it is just means to express important and deep thought. Trust me, gore is the least shocking aspect in this movie.
- DirectorL.Q. JonesStarsDon JohnsonJason RobardsSusanne BentonA young man and his telepathic dog wander a post-apocalyptic wasteland.Post-apocalyptic cult movie, an allegorical tale about what it means to be an individual in selfish society. Dog eats dog, literally.
- DirectorTakeshi KitanoStarsTakeshi KitanoYûrei YanagiYuriko IshidaTwo disquieted junior baseball players seek revenge on the local yakuza for attacking their coach. In my opinion maybe the best of Takeshi Kitano's movies. Sure, we all watched his over hyped Fireworks, but it's the early Kitano with films like Violent Cop and his very unusual Kids Return what makes him truly outstanding. Boiling Point is simply fantastic ultra violent movie, truly capturing Kitano's style.
- DirectorAleksey BalabanovStarsAgniya KuznetsovaAleksey PoluyanLeonid GromovA young woman is taken hostage by a police officer gone mad.Dark and brutal Russian movie with shocking real life horrors, absolute tour de force of banality of evil.
- DirectorJan BucquoyStarsJean-Henri CompèreFanny HanciauxLolo FerrariOn a Belgian beach at Camping Cosmos. The delegate send by the Ministry is confronted with sex and murder. The residents enjoy their holidays in a peculiar way...Cult Belgian movie, philosophical fable about the state of human civilization.
- DirectorWerner HerzogStarsWerner HerzogThis film surveys the disaster of the Kuwaiti oil fields in flames, with little narration and scarcely any interviews. Hell on Earth is presented in such transcendent visions and music that one can only be fascinated by it.The best documentary movie from one of a kind Werner Herzog. Huge oil fields in Iraq on fire. Enough said.
- DirectorRyûhei KitamuraStarsAya UetoKenji KohashiHiroki NarimiyaRaised to deal in cold blooded death, the teenage assassin girl Azumi must defeat three evil warlords while also battling her own heart.Ryûhei Kitamura is not well known Japanese director, although he does have hard core fan base in the west following his Versus. Azumi, in my opinion, is better. Very virtuous movie done right.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsSteven SoderberghScott AllenBetsy BrantleyFletcher Munson, the lethargic employee of a pseudo-religious self help company, and his doppelganger, the friendly but dull dentist Dr. Jeffrey Korchek.Believe it or not, Steven Soderbergh stars in his own movie and even plays two characters. No wonder he didn't even bother to mention his or entire cast name in the credits, like at all. This is probably the most middle class movie ever made, the wonderful mediocrity of the bourgeoisie indeed.
- DirectorRob ZombieStarsJoe AlaskeyKen ForeeSheri Moon ZombieA washed-up luchador and a super-spy investigate Nazi zombies, a nefarious scientist, and a stripper with a Satanic birthmark.Wild and outrageous animated comedy. A werewolf Nazis, I mean, come on.
- DirectorFabián BielinskyStarsRicardo DarínGastón PaulsGraciela TenenbaumTwo con artists try to swindle a stamp collector by selling him a sheet of counterfeit rare stamps (the "nine queens").Great Argentinian movie about con artists on the job. There are very few con movies that manage to pull it off without plot holes and with satisfying ending. This is one of them.
- DirectorGyörgy PálfiStarsCsaba CzeneIstván GyuriczaGina MorenoThree generations of men, including a pervert that constantly seeks for new kinds of satisfaction, an obese speed eater and a passionate embalmer.Absolutely *beep* up Hungarian movie. You won't believe your eyes.
- DirectorYasuzô MasumuraStarsEiji FunakoshiMako MidoriNoriko SengokuA blind sculpter and his mother kidnap a young model.Japanese surreal exploitation movie, as best as sick Japanese movies go. Great director though, he makes this a truly artistic experience.
- DirectorJulian DoyleStarsSimon CallowKal WeberLucy CuddenA shy, stuttering professor brings Aleister Crowley back to life.Satanic entity runs amok through English town, outrageously and hilariously disregarding any social rules. As body count increases the death becomes more and more inventive. This brilliantly written, fun dark comedy mixed with sci-fi elements is truly fantastic and overlooked cult movie.
- DirectorD. Kerry PriorStarsDavid AndersChris WyldeLouise GriffithsIn Los Angeles, a fallen soldier who has joined the ranks of the living dead reunites with his best friend in order to deal with the city's drug dealers and killers - a perfect way to collect the blood that one of them so desperately needs.Great take on Zombie genre with few surprising twists.
- DirectorJo Beom-jinZack KellerEd SkudderStarsNick AinsworthYang Jeong-hwaZack KellerIn a future where energy is made from fecal matter, the government rewards defecation with "juicybars". Small-time hustlers try to get rich while fending off the mutated Diaper Gang. This vulgar and violent Korean animation is one of the best examples for adult animation you can find. Crazy action and nihilistic comedy of this movie don't even try to hide social and political criticism with some pop culture mocking.
- DirectorFrançois SimardAnouk WhissellYoann-Karl WhissellStarsMunro ChambersLaurence LeboeufMichael IronsideIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland in 1997, a comic book fan adopts the persona of his favourite hero to save his enthusiastic friend and fight a tyrannical overlord.Retro style fantasy movie, channeling the feeling of a B-movie from the 80's. Lots of gore and self aware cheesy special effects, but underneath it is actually a sweet, romantic love story with monsters and heroes.
- DirectorYuan ZhangStarsWen JiangWei ZhaoLijun FangWell, apparently Wu Fang (Wei Zhao) is a young lady on a mission. Namely, to go on as many dates as quickly as possible, not to drink as much tea as possible, but to find the man of her dreams. Then there is her latest blind date, one Chen Mingliang (Wen Jiang), who is on a rebound and meeting Miss Wu. Will this one work out? After all, they seem to be opposites in so many ways.Unusual Chinese drama, proving that no matter what culture we are from, we are still human beings. Amazing cinematography by Christopher Doyle in his peak can be only overshadowed by gentle beauty of Wei Zhao. Very hypnotic movie about modern China and its people in the midst of urban revolution.
- DirectorCory McAbeeStarsCory McAbeeRocco SistoGregory Russell CookSamuel Curtis, an interplanetary trader, sets forth through a rustic and remote solar system, unaware that his old friend Professor Hess is trying to kill him.Well, not exactly overlook and not under appreciated, but still worth mentioning in this list. The director Cory McAbee is quite famous in certain counterculture circles, but less known in the mainstream. This is his best film so far, an ultra minimalistic and surreal space adventure.
- DirectorStephen ChowLik-Chi LeeStarsStephen ChowKaren MokVincent KokThe most renowned and feared chef in the world loses his title of God of Cookery because of his pompous attitude. Humbled, he sets out to reclaim his title. One of the best movies from Stephen Chow, although not as popular as his later films. Taking the Kung Fu master genre to a bit different direction and breaking its chewed up formula, this amusing and refreshing comedy is Chow at his best as actor and as director.
- DirectorChris DelaportePascal PinonStarsKirsten DunstAnjelica HustonRichard HarrisOn the distant planet Axis, rebellious, high-spirited teenage girl Kaena defies the High Priest and her people's ancestral beliefs to take a perilous journey and discover what dark secrets lie beyond the clouds.Unusual and very imaginative fantasy, this animated adventure is full of thrills and excellent storytelling.
- DirectorJoseph GuzmanStarsIvet CorveaCheryl LyoneJohn WinscherThings go horribly wrong when Catherine and Rebecca, two Catholic schoolgirls, knock on the wrong door while selling religious paraphernalia. This is how you make true grindhouse B-movie.
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsChase WilliamsonRob MayesPaul GiamattiA new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return no longer human. Can two college drop-outs save humanity from this silent, otherworldly invasion?Very trippy and surreal adventure hits the high levels of WTF somewhere at the beginning, and then it just keeps going up and up.
