- DirectorPepe DanquartStarsJoschka FischerHans KoschnickKatharina ThalbachHe was a student activist, an urban guerrilla, a taxi driver; Joseph "Joschka" Fischer emerged from the Extra-parliamentary Opposition (APO) to become Hessen's trainer-clad environment minister and Germany's suited and booted foreign minister. Director Pepe Danquart follows Joschka's colorful life through six decades of postwar Germany from the phony fifties, to the wild APO days, through the "leaden times" of RAF-terror and on to the advent of the anti-nuclear movement and the birth of the Green Party, then all the way up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and Germany's first red-green coalition. Danquart's film is a time machine hurtling through the decades with Joschka at the helm gazing out--often in astonishment--at the epochs that shaped him, as he did them. JOSCHKA AND SIR FISCHER reaches far beyond biographic narrative. Oscar-winning director Pepe Danquart («Black Rider», «Hell on Wheels», «To the Limit») presents an entertaining and insightful exploration of postwar Germany including previously unseen footage. He depicts the country's long search for democracy and her struggle to shake off the horrors of the past. Joschka Fischer's thoughtful and often self-depreciating responses when confronted with provocative scenes from Germany's history as well as his own, invites us to see him in a new light. Joschka made history; there's no doubt about it. But it was Germany's own unique history, which paved the way for a career such as his. By inviting Joschka's contemporaries in front of the camera--e.g. actress Katharina Thalbach, European MP Daniel Cohn-Bendit, as well as Fehlfarben band members--Danquart rounds off his documentary with a controversial and entertaining kaleidoscopic retrospective of "those breathless days" gone by.

- DirectorRainer Werner FassbinderAlf BrustellinHans Peter CloosStarsWolfgang BächlerHeinz BennentWolf BiermannGermany in Autumn has no typical plot; it mixes documentary footage with standard movie scenes to present the mood of Germany during the late 1970s. The film covers 2 months in 1977 when a businessman was kidnapped and murdered by the left-wing terrorists known as the RAF-Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction). The businessman was kidnapped in an effort to secure the release of the original leaders of the RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang. When the kidnapping effort and a plane hijacking effort failed, the three most prominent leaders of the RAF, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, and Jan-Carl Raspe, all committed suicide in prison. It has become an article of faith within the left-wing community that these three were actually murdered by the state. The film has several vignettes, including an extended set of scenes with famous director Rainer Werner Fassbinder discussing his feelings about Germany's political situation at the time. Fassbinder's scenes almost seem to be candid documentary footage, but they aren't. Other scenes include documentary footage of the joint funeral of Baader, Enslin, and Raspe.

- DirectorIlona ZiokStarsFritz BauerManfred AmendHorst BingelDocumentary on Fritz Bauer humanist lawyer, in Germany during the sixties, whose main objective in the few trials achieved against Nazi criminals was whether they were capable of repentance. In this documentary we can sadly see how the entire German judicial system protected with its laws and glosses of these many who committed criminal acts during the period of national socialism where the Holocaust took place, in which 6 million Jews were exterminated. Very probably Bauer's death was a murder that went unpunished by this same corrupted judicial system.

- DirectorJean-Christophe KlotzStarsVictor BarbatYves BeigbederAxel FischerIn the summer of 1945, the American authorities instructed two young soldiers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg, to gather visual evidence attesting to Nazi crimes, with a view to the trial against twenty-four dignitaries of the Third Reich which was preparing for Nuremberg. The sons of an eminent producer, already experienced in the cinema business, they must (under the aegis of filmmaker John Ford, head of the Office of Strategic Services, OSS) support the accusation of chief prosecutor Robert Jackson. In four months of high-risk investigation across devastated Europe, the Schulbergs manage to save hundreds of hours of footage, much of it taken by the Nazis, from destruction. Their editing team then worked tirelessly to complete before the opening of the trial on November 21, 1945, films exposing the atrocities perpetrated after Hitler's seizure of power, from the first pogroms to the concentration camp system, and their premeditated nature. Without the help of his brother, who has resumed his work as a screenwriter in the United States, Stuart Schulberg is then responsible, alongside the Soviet Roman Karmen, for filming the main stages of the procedure, a first in the history of justice. . They are only allowed to shoot thirty-five hours of rushes over more than ten months of hearings, but the sound recordings of the entire proceedings will allow Stuart to produce Nuremberg: its Lesson for Today, a documentary that the American authorities, facing to Cold War emergencies, finally decide to bury in 1948.

- DirectorSebastian PetersonStarsDaniel BorgwardtXenia SnagowskiAdrian HeidenreichHeroes Like Us presents as heroes ordinary teenagers and young East German adults, who in Thomas Brussig's (the novel and screenplay author) story, caused the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Our young hero falls in love, from an early age, with a girl whose family is not in good standing with the ruling Communist party. Our hero's father, however, is a member of the "Stasi", the secret state police. The father not only hinders his son's relationship with the girl, but he arranges for his son, after finishing school, to become a Stasi spy himself. The absurdities of everyday life in the former German "Democratic" Republic are comically (sometimes tragically) are exposed throughout the film.

- DirectorKurt MaetzigStarsPaul BildtFritz TillmannWilly A. KleinauBased on the 1947 book "I.G. Farben", by American author Richard Sasuly, and records from the Nuremberg Trial of the chemical giant I.G. Farben, Council of the Gods is a story about the collaboration between international corporations and German scientists, whose research contributed to the death of millions. Featuring music by Hanns Eisler, electronic sound by Oskar Sala (Hitchcocks's "The Birds") and a script by Friedrich Wolf, the film is powerful in its depiction of the moral dilemmas and lessons of the war, as well as of Cold War propaganda. Chemist Dr. Hans Scholz lives through a tortuous political transformation and maturation process. Finally, he becomes wrapped up in his political neutrality and closes his eyes to the fact that poison is being produced in his factory. Standing before the judges at the Nuremberg trials he has to face the fact that he was partly responsible for the deaths of millions in the gas chambers of the extermination camps.

- DirectorAndreas GoldsteinThe "Film about the Father" is a difficult genre. Andreas Goldstein, son of the GDR cultural functionary Klaus Gysi (1912-1999) has tackled this task with a complete lack of vanity, but with insistence: measured and calm, honest and intellectual, analytical and personal. He uncovers a mosaic that renounces both the teleologies of the self-styled winners of history and the simplifications of (West) German Oscar nominees. This film is not about the lives of others, but about his own life. Not about yesterday, about today, too.

- DirectorKonrad WolfStarsRenate BlumeEberhard EscheHans Hardt-HardtloffIn 1961, Rita returns to her childhood village after a breakdown. As she recovers, she remembers the past two years: her love for chemist Manfred, 10 years her senior; his enthusiasm about his new chemical process, which turned to bitter disappointment in the face of rejection; his escape to West Berlin a few weeks before the Wall was built; and his hope that she would follow him. This East German classic, praised by critics as one of Germany's 100 Most Important Films, is based on Christa Wolf's internationally-known novel, criticized in the GDR for questioning the construction of the Wall. Produced during a brief cultural thaw in the early 1960s, this film was strongly influenced by French Nouvelle Vague cinema.
