Vintage Christian Films
The Christian film industry has come a long way since the 70s, when Mark IV’s “Thief in the Night” burst onto the scene, terrifying secular and evangelical audiences alike. Looking back, the film seems...dated...to say the least. With poor acting and laughable special effects, it’s easy to see why so many wrote this movie - and the three installments that followed - off as a “C” franchise. However, there’s a certain charm in this flawed but earnest attempt at filmmaking. While these films lack award-winning qualities, they have a far clearer (and more powerful) message than many of the Christian films being made today. As production companies realize the potential of faith-based filmmaking, scores of “Christian” films are hitting the market as we speak. And while plenty of companies stand firm in their commitment to sharing the gospel and/or presenting a solid Christian worldview, others have “sold out” in order to reach a larger audience. Many “Christian” films are just big-budget Hollywood efforts to cash in on a trend without truly caring about their target audience’s worldview. Some of these films are even littered with curse words and suggestive dialogue or scenes. It’s a shame that what was once an evangelistic tool has become yet another money-making racket. I’ve been on what I call a “vintage/retro Christian movies” kick, and this recent obsession has led to the discovery of some real gems. Here’s a list of my favorite Christian flicks from the 70s and 80s - back in the day when production values took a backseat to evangelism and a clear presentation of the gospel. I’ll be adding to this list as I discover more films, so stay tuned! May God bless you all, and may these films be a blessing as well.
