- DirectorRobert EggersStarsRobert PattinsonWillem DafoeValeriia KaramanTwo lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.A Masterpiece in every sense of the word, this film establishes Robert Eggers as one of the best new directors working, as well as showcasing some of the greatest performances ever put to film from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. The cinematography is astonishingly good, immersing you into this world along with its breathtakingly haunting production design. There are so many memorable moments and quotes that you'll be saying forever. This is a showcase of the highest quality of film that can be released.
- DirectorJoe TalbotStarsJimmie FailsJonathan MajorsRob MorganA young man searches for home in the changing city that seems to have left him behind.Whats not to love with this film, the direction provided by Joe Talbot is of the highest quality, giving us fantastic writing, cinematography as well as providing one of my most favourite scores of all time. The performances from Jimmie Fails and Jonathon Majors match Joe Talbot's direction giving us unique characters that are instantly relatable. The subject matter is powerful and will make you feel some sort of emotion by the time the film reaches its end credits.
- DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsAdam SandlerJulia FoxIdina MenzelWith his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive.A career defining performance from Adam Sandler mixed with the Safdie Brothers unique style of film making, makes Uncut Gems one of the best films to come from A24, that completely shows that the fast paced stressful environments that the Safdies give us can be highly enjoyable.
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.James Franco tells one of the best biopics out there, one about Tommy Wiseau and the making of the room, I loved this film it is so poignant talking about friendship and chasing your dreams in the light of adversity. James Franco gives a fantastic performance pulling off all the whacky things that make Tommy Wiseau unique I loved this and is necessary for anyone that has watched the room and is fascinated as to how a film so bad could get made in the first place.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.Ari Aster first movie Hereditary is just a horror masterclass in every way, the story, themes and performances make this so terrifying to watch. Toni Collette gives one of the best performances of the decade that sends chills down your spine, definitely a must if you are a fan of horror.
- DirectorJonah HillStarsSunny SuljicKatherine WaterstonLucas HedgesFollows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop. This film captures the aesthetic it is going for so well. Jonah Hill gives an excellent directorial debut giving us a film that fills you with so much nostalgia right from the beginning. I love the dynamic between the main character and the group telling a story about friendship in this time period that feels so authentic and real. The way it uses skating feels just as authentic as the characters.
- DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. There is so much that I love about this film, firstly Robert Eggers provides an excellent directorial debut managing to capture Old Shakespearean English so well, the time period integrating with the type of horror he makes works so well, it leaves you in constant suspense, and Anya Taylor Joy is fantastic in this.
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.Moonlight is a great film in so many ways from its gorgeous cinematography to the great performances and the deep themes it addresses. Moonlight feels like something that gets better and better every time you think about it. However, it does have some slow moments and the 3rd act can feel a little unfulfilling, and a lot of the time feels like its trying to play catch up as there is massive time jumps between each act.
- DirectorDavid LoweryStarsCasey AffleckRooney MaraMcColm Cephas Jr.In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife. This film is a masterclass in visual storytelling, this film truly is pure art, the cinematography is gorgeous and gives us a feeling that we are watching something very private to the ghost and his life before he died. Has a strong performance from Casey Affleck, the biggest negative I can see is that too much time passes throughout the story and it gets a little ridiculous.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.Ari Aster provides an excellent sophmore feature in Midsommar showing us he can build tension and create horror in broad daylight, where flowers are blooming and the buildings are nice to look at, Florence Pugh gives an excellent performance as well as her supporting cast I just find the run time to be way too long but overall this is one of the most memorable horror films I have ever seen.
- DirectorSean BakerStarsBrooklynn PrinceBria VinaiteWillem DafoeSet over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.Sean Bakers The Florida Project showcases one of the best child performances ever from Brooklyn Prince, her child hood innoence contrasting with quite a dodgy neighbourhood is used excellently here. The story is touching and has a very strong third act.
- DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsRobert PattinsonBenny SafdieJennifer Jason LeighAfter a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Connie Nikas embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City's underworld to get his brother Nick out of jail.the beginning of Robert Pattinsons resurgence as an actor. Good time is an impressive debut from the Safdie brothers, introducing us to their high tempo stressful environments they love to create, just has a strange 2nd act that just isn't as enjoyable as the 1st and 3rd.
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsBen StillerNaomi WattsAdam DriverA middle-aged couple's career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives.I find this to be quite an underrated film, Noah Baumbach provides excellent direction and writes another great screenplay here, where ideas that are presented in marriage story are slightly touched upon here. The performances from Ben Stiller and Adam Driver are awesome. This still feels like a earlier version of Baumbach where he inst the director he is now so it doesn't hit the highs marriage story does but its still a great film nonetheless.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.Brie Larson gives a career high performance in this powerful film about being abducted and having to live in captivity for years and having to raise a child in that environment, however the 3rd act just isn't as strong as the first two, I still enjoyed the film immensely.
- DirectorBo BurnhamStarsElsie FisherJosh HamiltonEmily RobinsonAn introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.Bo Burnham manages to write and direct the most genuine story relating to high school and a tween girl in this day and age, diving into issues like self-confidence, attitude towards parents, and use of social media. The film however feels like it could be elevated more than just showing us these things.
- DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsJoel EdgertonChristopher AbbottCarmen EjogoSecure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.A decent film that builds great atmosphere, a post apocalyptic film that has originality and great performances, just had a slightly weak ending.
- DirectorLulu WangStarsShuzhen ZhaoAwkwafinaX MayoA Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies. This is a film where like lady bird I just couldn't connect with the story very much, however Awkwafina gives a great performance and it has quite a strong ending I just didn't like it as much as I would've liked to.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsAndrew GarfieldRiley KeoughTopher GraceSam, a disenchanted young man, finds a mysterious woman swimming in his apartment's pool one night. The next morning, she disappears. Sam sets off across LA to find her, and along the way he uncovers a conspiracy far more bizarre. This is a film with some very great and unique ideas where if the implementation of it all worked it would be a lot higher on this list and Andrew Garfield gives a good performance, however it leaves every plot line way too open where it felt like they shouldn't have been touched on at all.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California. This is a strange one for me, the film has some really great performances from everyone, and Greta Gerwig shows promise in her directorial debut, I just didn't connect with the characters in the story at all, and the conclusion just didn't feel satisfying at all.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.A decent film with great visual effects, and great performances, but once again it is just a film that doesn't quite stick with me.
- DirectorAsif KapadiaStarsAmy WinehouseMitch WinehouseMark RonsonArchival footage and personal testimonials present an intimate portrait of the life and career of British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse.Quite an interesting Documentary about Amy Winehouse, its just not something that stuck with me.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsPaul DanoDaniel RadcliffeMary Elizabeth WinsteadA hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body, and together they go on a surreal journey to get home. This one was hard to place as I did get a lot of entertainment from seeing this, Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe are both quite good in this film. The story was just a little too ridiculous to me, it reminded me of the room in some ways where its just so bad its kinda good.
- DirectorClaire DenisStarsRobert PattinsonJuliette BinocheAndré 3000A father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation. This film was very disappointing to me, I was expecting a really interesting sci fi with Robert pattinson, but what i got was way too many sex scenes that made it uncomfortable to watch, and a story that doesn't really go anywhere. The only redeeming thing about this film is that Robert Pattinson at least delivers a good performance.
- DirectorElijah BynumStarsTimothée ChalametMaika MonroeAlex RoeIn 1991, a sheltered teenage boy comes of age during a wild summer he spends on Cape Cod getting rich from selling pot to gangsters, falling in love for the first time, partying and eventually realizing that he is in over his head. One of the most generic films I have ever seen, Hot Summer Nights is definitely the worst film I have seen Timothee Chalamet in. I couldn't even finish it, this was also very boring to watch.
- DirectorJoanna HoggStarsNeil YoungTosin ColeJack McMullenA young film student in the early '80s becomes romantically involved with a complicated and untrustworthy man. This is not only the worst A24 films I have seen but maybe the worst film I have ever seen. This film was frustratingly boring to watch, I hated the characters the drab cinematography and the writing that was just constantly boring. It made it even worse that I had to travel over an hour just to see it.
