- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsMatthew McConaugheyCharlie HunnamMichelle DockeryAn American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.9/10, Was this really a January release? Guy Richie made a terrific film here, makes me want to watch Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels again. Anyone who likes that film and Snatch needs to see this immediately, will not regret it. A funny and gripping crime film, selling a marijuana business shouldn't be this difficult should it?
- DirectorKôtarô TamuraStarsKaya KiyoharaTaishi NakagawaMatsutera ChiemiAfter befriending a marine biology student, a sarcastic artist living with paraplegia begins to experience the world beyond her home.9/10, puts a smile on your face, enough said.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsKotaro DaigoNana MoriTsubasa HondaSet during a period of exceptionally rainy weather, high-school boy Hodaka Morishima runs away from his troubled rural home to Tokyo and befriends an orphan girl who can manipulate the weather.8/10, This doesn't quite reach the greatness of Your Name but it has the emotion and the animation to make this a fantastic watch.
- DirectorSam HargraveStarsChris HemsworthBryon LerumRyder LerumTyler Rake, a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he's enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.8/10, Plot is very simple, rescue a kid from a drug lord and kill a bunch of people trying to stop you. I suppose its more of a video game than a film though much more fun to watch.
- DirectorMichael MatthewsStarsDylan O'BrienJessica HenwickMichael RookerSeven years after he survived the monster apocalypse, lovably hapless Joel leaves his cozy underground bunker behind on a quest to reunite with his high school sweetheart.8/10, Could we expect this guy (especially with his knowledge and personality) to do what he did should monsters really take over the planet? Well no, but the film is fun, sweet and exciting with enough decent effects to keep things engaging. Conclusion has that air of inspiration though I got to say I don't find it very feasible to actually do...
- DirectorCory FinleyStarsHugh JackmanRay RomanoWelker WhiteThe beloved superintendent of New York's Roslyn school district and his staff, friends and relatives become the prime suspects in the unfolding of the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in American history.8/10
- DirectorAdil El ArbiBilall FallahStarsWill SmithMartin LawrenceVanessa HudgensMiami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett must face off against a mother-and-son pair of drug lords who wreak vengeful havoc on their city.7/10, had fun with this one, more than the previous two Bad Boys to be honest, perhaps the lack of Michael Bay helped. Still has its proportion of cheese but was overall quite entertaining.
- DirectorGina Prince-BythewoodStarsCharlize TheronKiKi LayneMatthias SchoenaertsA covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.7/10, Finally watched this 3 yrs after its release, it was alright. The villain was weak CEO cliche, "I will unlock your secret and make money!" Past that the action was worth seeing and the characters engaged me enough to care about them. Sequel coming in 2024 I guess.
- DirectorTomm MooreRoss StewartStarsHonor KneafseyEva WhittakerSean BeanA young apprentice hunter and her father journey to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night.7/10, A decent film with a different animation style. The story is pretty simplistic but an intriguing premise an a likable pair of leads in the young girls carries Wolfwalkers to something worth watching.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsJohn David WashingtonRobert PattinsonElizabeth DebickiArmed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time.7/10, I'll be honest, this movie confused me and I was never able to really catch up with what was going on. I still managed to be entertained well enough but the fact it was so baffling really was preventing me from enjoying this as much as other Christopher Nolan films. Also felt disappointing that with this grand concept that this movie throws out at us, the villain in the end is some just some petty guy throwing a tantrum, "if i can't have it no one can". Sigh. Honestly I wonder if I'm rating this too high, if I'm just giving Nolan a pass cause well, its a Nolan film. 7/10 for now though.
- DirectorAaron SchneiderStarsTom HanksElisabeth ShueStephen GrahamSeveral months after the U.S. entry into World War II, an inexperienced U.S. Navy commander must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by a German submarine wolf pack.7/10, Not exactly a character based film but it has continued action and tension in this naval warfare film that engaged me. Not sure if it will have rewatch value though now that the story has been revealed.
- DirectorDave WilsonStarsVin DieselEiza GonzálezSam HeughanRay Garrison, a slain soldier, is re-animated with superpowers.7/10, Once you get past the absurd premise I think its a decent action flick, Vin Diesel kicking butt was entertaining and film was well shot overall.
- DirectorPete DocterKemp PowersStarsJamie FoxxTina FeyGraham NortonJoe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.7/10, It is decent Pixar, had some cute parts, some humor, some feels. Didn't make me tear up like Inside out did but I got a bit of the fuzzies. I do feel that this film might have more of an impact on adults than younger viewers, those who have been through life and wonder if they have fulfilled their "spark".
- DirectorWilliam EubankStarsKristen StewartVincent CasselMamoudou AthieA crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.7/10, Acceptable little film though really seeing films like Alien and The Abyss would be preferable but at matinee prices this is an entertaining enough watch. Even the annoying unneeded touch of "evil corporation" didn't dilute the film that much for me.
- DirectorGavin O'ConnorStarsBen AffleckAl MadrigalJanina GavankarJack Cunningham was a high school basketball phenom who walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Years later, when he reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, he may get one last shot at redemption.7.0/10, Doesn't really distinguish itself from other movie of its type, one among many. Ben Affleck does a good job with the bland material though, keeps a mediocre film to be a decent watch. Can just get this to a 7.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsTom HollandChris PrattJulia Louis-DreyfusIn a magical world full of technological advances, elven brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot set out on an adventure to resurrect their late father for a day.6/10, I think this movie had a great idea behind it but in its execution only was so-so. Everything from setting to plot to characters felt alright for me but nothing really grabbed me. The manticore was probably the best part and even she wasn't exactly comedy genius either. Oh well, I'm sure kids will really like it what really matters.
- DirectorAaron SorkinStarsEddie RedmayneAlex SharpSacha Baron CohenThe story of 7 people on trial stemming from various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.6/10, An important part of an event that certainly can use a modern telling but I think the writers were trying to do an overdramatized speedrun through this trial. The first act was terrific, the setup and start of that farce was compelling. As this went on however I can't help but feel that the events weren't given enough time to breathe and instead were given over to "Law & Order" style courtroom drama. Maybe events played out like this but it felt too much like "acting" then history. Plus the defendants weren't really given for me to feel anything for, everything started feeling like a clip show. Plus a moment during the riot where someone shouts "make me a sandwich" made me laugh when I bet I wasn't supposed to.
Then we have a rushed ending, I got confused for a bit given there was no indication it was coming. Plus some other strange editing choices made the viewing experience less than what it could have been. Overall this was alright I guess. Michael Keaton shows up for some reason too. - DirectorChris SandersStarsHarrison FordOmar SyCara GeeA sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon.6/10, the CGI dog was distracting and the background CGI a bit less so but noticeable all the same. Film overall was a bit dull and the magical dog that lifts the lives of all around him, (humans, dogs and wolves) was a bit heavyhanded. Just a bit. Had enough mindless adventure scenes to be a distracting enough watch.
- DirectorJeff FowlerStarsBen SchwartzJames MarsdenJim CarreyAfter discovering a small, blue, fast hedgehog, a small-town police officer must help him defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on him.6/10, This film is more directed at kids of course, the humor it has certainly shows that. The story is silly as well with a few threads left hanging so its not exactly plotted well. It is fun though, not a great film and not one that needs to be seen again but Sonic entertains.
- DirectorDerrick BorteStarsRussell CroweCaren PistoriusGabriel BatemanAfter a confrontation with an unstable man at an intersection, a woman becomes the target of his rage.6/10, I guess Unhinged was an alright, can barely say I liked it. A thriller starring Russell Crowe playing himself.
- DirectorCraig ZobelStarsBetty GilpinHilary SwankIke BarinholtzTwelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they've been chosen - for a very specific purpose - The Hunt.5/10, It has lots of cheesy moments along with some cringe. I get its satire and all but the stereotypes got to be a bit much. At the same time it made me laugh a few times and could be amusing with some references and over the top violence. Mixed bag that doesn't need to be seen again.
- DirectorThomas BezuchaStarsDiane LaneKevin CostnerKayli CarterA retired sheriff and his wife, grieving over the death of their son, set out to find their only grandson.5/10, I wasn't able to connect with the grief of the grandparents and so found Let Him Go to be rather dull since it is that which is supposed to carry the film. The sudden violence really just seems like something that was forced in to have something a little interesting happen.
- DirectorWalt DohrnDavid P. SmithStarsAnna KendrickJustin TimberlakeRachel BloomWhen the Queen of the Hard Rock Trolls tries to take over all the Troll kingdoms, Queen Poppy and her friends try different ways to save all the Trolls.5/10, cavity inducing sugar nothingness. Bad covers of songs and nothing much else. It isn't terrible but there is nothing here with a generic message about being yourself and tolerance of other peoples music taste (and other things of course, accept differences kids!)
- DirectorDean ParisotStarsKeanu ReevesAlex WinterKristen SchaalOnce told they'd save the universe during a time-traveling adventure, two would-be rockers from San Dimas, California find themselves as middle-aged dads still trying to crank out a hit song and fulfill their destiny.5/10, The original was cheesy with some cringe but it was overall a fun film, this sequel is even cheesier with even more cringe and the fun is hard to find. Honestly it felt like Keanu was trying to hard to keep the magic of 30 years ago and it just didn't work. Bill and Ted trying to save time and space, their marriages and help their daughters, none of it was given proper time for me to care.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineKristen WiigDiana must contend with a colleague, and with a businessman whose desire for extreme wealth sends the world down a path of destruction, after an ancient artifact that grants wishes goes missing.5/10, Best I can say about WW84 is that I didn't hate it like I thought I would. Its a meh movie for me. Had some decent chemistry with the protagonists in it, Gal Gadot/Chris Pine were fine though not enough scenes of them together I think. Just made a few fish out of water references about it being the 1980s and a couple cry scenes and that about did it for their time together. Kristin Wigg and Pedro Pascal played a couple cartoon villains and all the cheese associated with it. Wigg being the standard clumsy awkward nerd who then gets powah and Pedro being the desperate greedy corporate type who gets powah. Bleh. Opening and closing action sequences were kids level in tone and dialogue. The end especially was so full of syrup I hope people don't get cavities from watching. Didn't buy the resolution at all. The whole structure of the plot with everything falling apart from wishes felt rather wobbly as well.
There were a few decent sequences that kept the film from being all bad though, its too bad the movie as a whole isn't worth getting to those parts ever again. One time watch is all this is imo. - DirectorPeter SegalStarsDave BautistaChloe ColemanParisa Fitz-HenleyA hardened CIA operative finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, having been sent undercover to surveil her family.5/10, Generic tough spy meets precocious young girl, hijinks ensue. Meh.
- DirectorAdam Egypt MortimerStarsJessica AllainMac BrandtSkylan BrooksMax Fist claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to earth, where he has no powers. No one believes his stories except for a local teen named Hamster.4/10, Boring film of a crazy drunken meth addled homeless guy who claims to be a hero from another dimension or something who then goes on a violent rampage on criminals to help a pair of teenagers targeted by drug dealers. Characters were unlikable and did nothing to make me take interest and the violence did not make up for lack of story.
- DirectorReed MoranoStarsBlake LivelyRichard BrakeElly CurtisA woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family.4/10, a high 4 but a bad film all the same. Lifeless film with dull characters in Blake Lively (ironic name) and Jude Law who are more likely to put me to sleep with their utter lack of charisma in this film.
- DirectorCathy YanStarsMargot RobbieRosie PerezMary Elizabeth WinsteadAfter splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.3/10, I didn't have high hopes for this film but I didn't think it would be bad. Bad dialogue, bad characters, bad ridiculous action. The writers clearly were going for humor but I didn't laugh once. A very woke film though, all the women are put upon badasses and all the men are evil and stupid. Harley Quinn herself was the only upside but she was surrounded by crap so she wasn't able to avoid getting splashed with it herself. The police detective lady especially was cringe. I know the film was doing some of her dialogue as intentionally so but cringe is cringe. Didn't buy the forcing of the ladies coming together either, honestly this whole thing was sloppy. The villain... a jerk basically, that's it. Understand this will bomb at box office, not surprising at all.
- DirectorJosh BooneStarsMaisie WilliamsAnya Taylor-JoyCharlie HeatonFive young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.3/10, I believe this film may rank in the top 10 of the most boring films I have ever seen. It was really hard to focus on the screen around the halfway point, these characters were complete non entities with backstories that were supposed to be emotional but left me feeling nothing. The main villain was their own fear, ho hum.
How precisely is this facility being run by one woman doctor? How is anything maintained? This is only one question that comes to mind in this absurd film. Clearly this needed more rewrites and reshoots then it already had. At least this is guaranteed to be forgotten since it was so uninteresting. - DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsIssa RaeKumail NanjianiPaul SparksA couple (Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery.3/10, I don't think this "comedy" knows what humor actually is. Every single joke fell flat for me except for a few in the beginning which got an embarrassed chuckle before the safe dull content just had my eyes glazing over. The plot itself was generic and stolen from better films. Lovebirds has nothing unless you enjoy watching a boring couple have boring squabbles throughout.
