- DirectorRahi Anil BarveAnand GandhiAdesh PrasadStarsSohum ShahJyoti MalsheAnita Date-KelkarA mythological story about a goddess who created the entire universe. The plot revolves around the consequences when humans build a temple for her first-born.Original screenplay, imaginative storytelling and a really simple idea at its core make Tumbbad my favorite movie of the decade.
- DirectorSriram RaghavanStarsAyushmann KhurranaTabuRadhika ApteA series of mysterious events change the life of a blind pianist, who must now report a crime that he should technically know nothing of.Andhadhun strikes the right chords with a pacy crime thriller. It's a roller-coaster whose twists and turns are hard to guess but always keep you on the edge of your seat. Accompanied by stellar performances, Andhadhun is just what you want from your weekend entertainment.
- DirectorDibakar BanerjeeStarsAbhay DeolEmraan HashmiKalki KoechlinPrime leader of a campaign against a big government project is killed in what appears to be a road accident. An IAS officer is ordered to probe the incident and the veils of falsehood begin to drop.Little known movie, Shanghai is a slick crime thriller that reconstructs a crime scene from through the many lies of its suspects. A neat twist at the end, ties up things perfectly, and is a nuanced commentary on the kind of crony capitalism that should be avoided.
- DirectorVikramaditya MotwaneStarsRanveer SinghSonakshi SinhaBarun ChandaAn aristocrat's daughter falls in love with a visiting archaeologist, but he holds a secret that could drive them apart.Lootera could be your classic romantic drama, but director Vikramaditya Motwane tells a complex tail with neatly etched out characters that breeze past its multi-decade storyline. Just the kind of slow-burner that you'd enjoy
- DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsShahid KapoorTabuShraddha KapoorA young man returns to Kashmir after his father's disappearance to confront his uncle, whom he suspects of playing a role in his father's fate.Adapted from Hamlet, Haider is one of those special movies where your opinion about the supposed Antagonist and Protoganist can vary on your perception of the situation. It intertwines the basic idea behind Hamlet in a real Indian setting that asks harsh questions about the ground realities of today. It's a bold movie that may never be created again.
- DirectorRajat KapoorStarsSanjay MishraSeema PahwaRajat KapoorAfter a distressing incident, a Delhi man vows to believe only what he can see, but his new ideals soon take his life in extreme directions.Aankhon Dekhi asks a question, which on surface seems hilariously facile but ultimately makes the audience look beyond the obvious. A comedy that's also meaningful.
- DirectorHansal MehtaStarsRajkummar RaoPrabhleen SandhuMohd. Zeeshan AyyubThe account of Human Rights lawyer Shahid Azmi, an ordinary citizen with an extraordinary commitment to justice.A gritty tale of an upright lawyer known for defending cases for people wrongfully accused of terrorism. Shahid deftly covers the journey of Shahid Azmi from the Mumbai riots to starting his own practice in early 2000s. Smart casting and a powerful performance by Rajkummar Rao helps in delivering a powerful drama.
- DirectorSriram RaghavanStarsVarun DhawanNawazuddin SiddiquiYami GautamRaghu begins walking a fine line between good and evil as he exacts violent revenge on two criminals who killed his family 15 years ago.Badlapur is an exceptional revenge saga, with a strong message. Very few people have such grasp of crime thrillers like Sriram Raghavan does, Badlapur is all about it's two central characters, played by a very dependable Nawazzudin Siddique and Varun Dhawan who surprisingly delivers a powerful performance in a subdued character that's so different from his other roles. It's peppered with some great dark humor and a strong supporting crew that includes Radhika Apte, and Vinay Pathak.
- DirectorVikramaditya MotwaneStarsRajat BarmechaRonit RoyManjot SinghExpelled from his school, a 16-year old boy returns home to his abusive and oppressive father.Much before the outburst of web series such as Kota Factory and Laakhon Mein Ek, Vikramaditya Motwane's teenage drama explored the idea of how India's brightest most creative talents are probably just stuck in a 'safe job' all their lives. Neatly sketched out characters and an exceptional performance by Rajat Barmecha makes Udaan one of the best movies this decade. It's real, raw and inspirational.
- DirectorAbhinay DeoAkshat VermaStarsImran KhanVir DasKunaal Roy KapurThree struggling room-mates unknowingly become potential prey of a ruthless gangster.Delhi Belly's essentially bollywood's pulp fiction. (and I don't mean it in a plagiaristic way), it's smart, witty and ultimately driven by a rather frivolous string of events. But you're guaranteed to have a great time for the crisp 1 hour 43 minutes of its running time. Memorable characters and some equally memorable performances make it a worthy watch any day.
- DirectorKrishna D.K.Raj NidimoruStarsTusshar KapoorSendhil RamamurthyNikhil DwivediVarious residents and career-criminals face challenges in crime-laden Mumbai.Taking a cue from one of their previous movies (Flavors), Shor in the City explores crime through the perspective of 3 different groups. Each with a unique perspective and reason. One does it for the fun of it, one commits it in self defense and one just to get a foot in the door. Crime has many faces in any indian city. Shor in the City, offers a witty and refreshing take on it.
- DirectorMeghna GulzarStarsIrrfan KhanKonkona Sen SharmaNeeraj KabiAn experienced investigator confronts several conflicting theories about the perpetrators of a violent double homicide.Based on a real life incident, Meghna Gulzar's Talvar is a brilliantly written drama that asks some really important questions. The level of research and commitment that went into the making of the movie really shows in the final product. Talvar rests on the shoulders of a powerful writing and acting crew that includes, Gulzar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Irrfan Khan, Sohum Shah and Gajraj Rao.
- DirectorHansal MehtaStarsManoj BajpayeeRajkummar RaoAshish VidyarthiA gay, linguistic professor living in a small orthodox city must deal with the aftermath of a sting operation that puts his sexual orientation in front of the entire nation.Aligarh tells a story that's never been told before. It offers a nuanced drama through the lens of a real life incidence that took place in the Aligarh muslim university. It's a sensitive tale that advocates for an individual's right to privacy. Manoj Bajpayee delivers arguably his best performance of the decade.
- DirectorAnurag KashyapStarsVineet Kumar SinghJimmy ShergillZoya HussainA boxer struggles to make his mark in the boxing world.Mukkabaaz is refreshing in every way. It's a sports drama with a lot of political commentary. But it's also particularly impressive in the way it shows a differently abled person. Mukkabaaz is all brawn over brains but it's also engaging. A story worth listening to and worth watching for Zoya Hussain and Vineet Kumar Singh's stellar acting.
- DirectorAnurag KashyapStarsManoj BajpayeeNawazuddin SiddiquiTigmanshu DhuliaA clash between Sultan and Shahid Khan leads to the expulsion of Khan from Wasseypur, and ignites a deadly blood feud spanning three generations.Anurag Kashyap's magnum opus, Gangs of Wassypur is probably the best gangster movie to come out of India. It's got a powerful story, that's deftly executed. It's Tarantino-esque and Scorsessee-esque in equal parts but it's what defines Anurag Kashyap's filmmaking in this decade. GoW is a movie that should be on every gangster movie lover's watchlist, across the globe.
- DirectorShoojit SircarStarsDeepika PadukoneAmitabh BachchanIrrfan KhanA quirky comedy about the relationship between a daughter and her aging father, whose eccentricities drive everyone crazy.Piku is a film about resistance to change, it's about how we often cling on to a lot of things. And Director Shoojit Sircar, uses constipation to tell this! An old cantankerous man's problem of constipation is perfectly juxtaposed with his tendency of clinging on to material and immaterial things in his life. Piku is funny, insightful and has a dependable cast that delivers.
- DirectorZoya AkhtarStarsHrithik RoshanFarhan AkhtarAbhay DeolThree friends decide to turn their fantasy vacation into reality after one of their friends gets engaged.Zoya Akhtar's breezy road movie, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, is funny, and offers a strong conflict at its core. It's one movie that I've always had downloaded in my library for a greater part of the decade, merely for it's beautiful cinematography and light hearted viewing.
- DirectorVikramaditya MotwaneStarsRajkummar RaoGeetanjali ThapaShiladitya SenA man struggles to survive after he unintentionally locks himself up in a high rise devoid of food, water and electricity. It's an implausible premise. You're probably never going to be locked in your apartment in the way the central character does. But it's also exceptionally insightful and innovative storytelling from Vikramaditya Motwane. Motwane takes the concept of a survival movie and puts it into a Mumbai apartment, it sounds crazy but it works. You're completely hooked into the survival story but more importantly you see the character grow a lot of mental strength and freedom from this unlikely encounter. Trapped is a short and innovative movie.
- DirectorKonkona Sen SharmaStarsKalki KoechlinVikrant MasseyGulshan DevaiahLife for a shy young Indian student slowly falls to pieces during a family road trip.Seldom does mental health get such spotlight as it does in Konkana Sen's Directorial debut set in the small town of McKluskie gunj. It's a period drama with powerful characters and a a story that keeps you watching until the very end. Vikrant Massey as Shutu delivers a fine performance.
- DirectorAbhishek ChaubeyStarsSushant Singh RajputBhumi PednekarAshutosh RanaSet in the Chambal valley, the film follows the story of a legion of dreaded, warring dacoits who once terrorized the Indian heartlands.Sonchiriya explores a really deep and introspective idea. It's a story about morals, ethics and promises from the infamous dacoits of Chambal. Set in 1975, Sonchiriya is meaningful filmmaking in the era of propaganda films. It only came out this year, but is already one of my favorite movies off the decade.
- DirectorHansal MehtaStarsRajkummar RaoRajesh TailangSatwant KaurA recounting of the story of infamous British-born terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who kidnapped and murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002.Omerta is in many ways the opposite of what Shahid was. These are twin movies directed by Hansal Mehta, both equally good and with unique execution. In Omertà, Mehta delivers what's pretty much looks like a raw capture of the heinous crimes committed by the central character of the movie. There's no context offered because there's none needed. The crimes were terrible, the modus operandi makes you squirm. It's a powerful uniquely shot film, that's alas difficult to find on the internet.
- DirectorPavan KirpalaniStarsRadhika ApteAmrita BagchiNivedita BhattacharyaAn agoraphobic young woman, traumatized by past events, finds herself trapped and terrorized in her own home.Phobia uses the genre of horror to show a twisted tale of a young women in Mumbai, whose dealing with agoraphobia after a horrid encounter. It's twisty, dark and scary but it's also smart and worthy of your time even if you're aren't a big horror fan.
- DirectorSujoy GhoshStarsVidya BalanParambrata ChattopadhyayIndraneil SenguptaA pregnant woman's search for her missing husband takes her from London to Kolkata, but everyone she questions denies having ever met him.Kahaani's a lot like the murder mysteries from Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes. It's full of clever twists and turns and some vivid characters that still remain fresh in the memory even 8 years after its initial release. if there's one hindi murder mystery you must watch, it's gotta be this.
- DirectorPrawaal RamanStarsRajvvir AroraaImaaduddin ShahNishikant KamatA brilliant student starts hallucinating after moving into a room that was occupied by another who committed suicide.404, is Prawal Raman's psychological thriller that tackles issues such as bullying and ragging in a college set up. It's thrilling and keeps you engaged with its many twists. Nishikant Kamat and Imaad Shah shine amongst a rather young and inexperienced ensemble.
- DirectorSubhash KapoorStarsRajat KapoorNeha DhupiaSanjay MishraOm Shastri, a recession victim comes to India to sell his ancestors property to clear is debt. On reaching he comes to know that selling the property will make his family homeless in India. Later he is kidnapped by goons thinking a rich NRI.Phas Gaye Re Obama is a battle wits between an NRI who's been hit by recession and local gangsters. Rajat Kapoor and Manu Rishi deliver the goods in terms of acting and laughs. The movie is as wacky as its title and leaves you in splits on multiple occasions.
