Movies/TV I want to see in 2022
After perhaps the most unusual year in film history, it looks like things are slowly returning to normal. The pandemic is far from over, but it looks like the film industry has adjusted to it for the time being. And with the acceleration of streaming platforms, it looks like there's a lot of titles to look forward to next year. There's some highly anticipated TV coming up, so I've decided to add that to my annual lists as well.

- CreatorRyan J. CondalGeorge R.R. MartinStarsMatt SmithEmma D'ArcyOlivia CookeAn internal succession war within House Targaryen at the height of its power, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.I'm not going to get my hopes up, considering what's happened to Game of Thrones already, but I'm interested to see what they do with this.
- CreatorDoug MoenchStarsOscar IsaacEthan HawkeMay CalamawySteven Grant discovers he's been granted the powers of an Egyptian moon god. But he soon finds out that these newfound powers can be both a blessing and a curse to his troubled life.No clue what this is, but I've watched Wandavision, Falcon, and Loki, so might as well.
- DirectorJeff TremaineStarsJohnny KnoxvilleSteve-OChris PontiusAfter 11 years, the Jackass crew is back for another crusade.I feel like this has been pushed back at least twice, but here's hoping it doesn't happen again.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsRobert PattinsonZoë KravitzJeffrey WrightWhen a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, The Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.Like everyone, I was skeptical when I heard Edward from Twilight was taking on the role of Batman. But I actually have high hopes for this one, and the trailer looks suitably dark and badass.
- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.I'm pretty loyal to Pixar, so I'll see this even if the teaser was rather uninspiring to me, CalArts style and all.
- DirectorTom GormicanStarsNicolas CagePedro PascalTiffany HaddishMoviestar Nick Cage is channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan and a CIA agent. If I'm reading the description right, this seems like it will be a love letter to Nicolas Cage and all the zany, odd performances he's delivered over the years. As a casual Cage fan myself, I'm interested.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others.I have my problems with the MCU, but love it or hate it, it's the unbeatable juggernaut of the film industry for the time being. So, I choose to keep up with it. I'm curious about this "multiverse" angle they're clearly aiming toward, hopefully it doesn't become too convoluted.
- CreatorJessica GaoStarsTatiana MaslanyGinger GonzagaMalia ArrayahJennifer Walters navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered Hulk.It does sound a little silly, but I may check it out. I make no promises to watch every single Marvel series they release on Disney+, though.
- DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardLaura DernFour years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, Biosyn operatives attempt to track down Maisie Lockwood, while Dr Ellie Sattler investigates a genetically engineered swarm of giant insects. The last Jurassic World was awful, and clearly just a set-up for this one. If they pull it off, they just might be able to redeem this very uneven new trilogy. I'm skeptical though.
- DirectorAngus MacLaneStarsChris EvansKeke PalmerPeter SohnWhile spending years attempting to return home, marooned Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg who are attempting to steal his fuel source. That trailer went hard, feel free to screenshot
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanChristian BaleThor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct. It's the MCU, it's Thor directed by Taiki Waititi again, I'm into it. Do we *really* have to bring back Natalie Portman's character though?
- StarsEwan McGregorMoses IngramVivien Lyra BlairJedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi must save young Leia after she is kidnapped, all the while being pursued by Imperial Inquisitors and his former Padawan now known as Darth Vader. It seems like Star Wars is following Marvel's lead in not only creating a cinematic universe, but one that extends to television as well. The line between film and television is definitely getting blurred in our streaming era. Well, every side character from the Mandalorian and their grandmother is getting their own spin-off miniseries, so why not Obi-Wan?
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon PereaThe residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.Do I know what Jordan Peele's next movie is about? Nope. Do I think it's a fair guess that it will involve at least one black person being haunted by some kind of psychologically disturbing force of evil that also serves as an allegory for racism? Yup. And will I see it? Absolutely.
- CreatorPatrick McKayJohn D. PayneStarsMorfydd ClarkIsmael Cruz CordovaCharlie VickersEpic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.Boy, this one could really go either way. They're pouring all kinds of money into this project, and I don't know if it can live up to Tolkien's vision or even the Peter Jackson films. But I hope we at least get an entertaining fantasy show to fill the GoT-shaped hole in my heart.
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryMiles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.Into the Spiderverse was truly a gem, easily the best Spiderman movie so far. What puts it above and beyond is the unique and super-vibrant visual style. I'm eager for more.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsLetitia WrightLupita Nyong'oDanai GuriraThe people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T'Challa. It's an astounding tragedy what happened to Chadwick Boseman. I hope they're able to honor him and continue on this story without him.
- DirectorAaron HorvathMichael JelenicPierre LeducStarsChris PrattAnya Taylor-JoyCharlie DayA plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother Luigi, trying to save a captured princess. It says "
Untitled Illumination Entertainment Project" right now, but I'm guessing that this is the slot for the Mario movie. The cast is...questionable, to say the least. But I'll go if only to shout random quotes from the original Mario movie at the screen. - DirectorDon HallQui NguyenStarsJake GyllenhaalJaboukie Young-WhiteGabrielle UnionThe legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest and most crucial mission. This is untitled for now too, but if I'm correct, this is an upcoming Disney animated film listed in the books as "Searcher Clade". Now, I know that's not going to be the final title because that's a horrible title, but I try to keep up with Disney releases despite their sinister practices.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverJake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their home.Yeah, remember this movie? I kinda do. It was very much a product of its time, and they've been working on this sequel for approximately a thousand years. I remember getting excited for this sequel, and hearing that it would "explore the oceans of Pandora", circa 2011. Well, a decade has passed, and one or two things have changed. The excitement isn't really there, but I'd like to see what they've been working on all this time.
- CreatorJoe CristalliChris HarrisStarsKelsey GrammerJack Cutmore-ScottToks OlagundoyeFrasier is off to a different city with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building.Yet another 20+ year old series they're trying to bring back for some revival or reunion. I don't think they'll capture the witty charm of the original, but I will enjoy seeing all these characters get together again. Minus John Mahoney, sadly.
- CreatorVince GilliganPeter GouldStarsBob OdenkirkRhea SeehornJonathan BanksThe trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the years leading up to his fateful run-in with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.I've lowkey been waiting for this series to finish before starting it, because I don't want to be kept waiting between seasons. Once the finale airs, that will be the starting flag for me.
- CreatorNeil DruckmannCraig MazinStarsPedro PascalBella RamseyAnna TorvAfter a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity's last hope. The game is a heartbreaking classic, and this (plus the Uncharted movie I'm not really interested in) will be a test run in adapting video games in a serious way that grown-ups can get into. But will they? We'll just have to see.
- DirectorGary DaubermanStarsLewis PullmanBill CampSpencer Treat ClarkAuthor Ben Mears returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem's Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.I read this book about a year ago, and had no idea until now that they were planning a new movie adaptation. I'm looking forward to seeing it, while it's still relatively fresh on my mind. In theory. My memory is terrible. The book had a very 70's, pulpy kind of feel, which I hope they preserve. Or they can go for the 80's nostalgia craze which has already been done to death, that's fine too.
- DirectorMaria SchraderStarsZoe KazanCarey MulliganPatricia ClarksonJodi Kantor and Megan Twohey's quest to break the Harvey Weinstein scandal.I would feel pretty terrible if I didn't include at least one film on here that isn't a sequel, a reboot, an adaptation, or just any product of the mega-corporations that now rule over us all. I always prefer original, self-contained films, but I'm bad at actually going to see them. The thing is, I combed through the original movies coming out next year, and none of them really jumped out at me. Just this and Unbearable Weight, and even that one will probably be banking on nostalgia and outside references. And Nope, I guess, but I'm already familiar with Peele's work, and wanted to branch out to someone whose work I'm not familiar with. The premise looks interesting enough, I read the Times, I like journalism, I'm interested in the process of how Weinstein was exposed for the monstrous predator he is. But I'm mostly putting this on here as a reminder to myself to seek out lower-profile films and support them. In our world of superhero multiverses and reboots of remakes, it's important to go out and see original content if we want people to keep making it.
