Movies related with Switzerland
It won't be a list of swiss movies.
I didn't do such a list, but I did anyway a list of swiss movies... that I have seen.
If u're interested:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls045031643/
I won't put ANY swiss movie here, cause, of course, they all are related to Switzerland.
No, in this list, I'll put movies for other reasons than the country who produced the movie, and I'll explain how they are related with Switzerland each time in the description under each movie.
Obviously, there have been hundreds of movies where they speak about a city of Switzerland (Geneva or Zurich - the 2 biggest cities, but no one is the capital, contrary to what millions of people think -most of the time), or of a swiss bank, swiss watch or some swiss chocolate or cheese) and also tons of movies that have been at least partially shot in Switzerland.
I won't put any movie where they pronounce the word swiss or Switzerland 1 or several time, it wouldn't be very interesting and it'd be very very incomplete.
And about the movies shot in Switzerland, I'll miss tons as well, cause I don't cheat, I don't search on the web, only in my memory, as always for my lists (I created around 150 of them so far; on Imdb only).

- DirectorTerence YoungStarsSean ConneryUrsula AndressBernard LeeA resourceful British government agent seeks answers in a case involving the disappearance of a colleague and the disruption of the American space program.Ok, let's start with a big piece.
I guess most of the people totally ignore (or forgot) it (I personally learned it many many years ago, then I forgot, before to rediscover it some years ago) cause it's not a lot known, but... JAMES BOND ISN'T AN ENGLISH SECRET AGENT.
HE IS half scottish (by his father), and HALF SWISS (his mother's side, as u deduced).
In the cinema, we discover it in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", when he pretend to be a genealogist to trap Ernst Stavro Blofeld, infamous boss of the S.P.E.C.T.R.E., and that the real genealogists teaching him their job made the family tree of Bond.
In the books anyway, I guess we learn it way before, in the 1st one (Casino Royale)... dunno.
I only read "On Her Majesty's..."
A second reason for Dr. No to be in this list is the fact Ursula Andress, the very 1st Bond girl of history is a 100% (not half like the character Bond) swiss actress.
Of course, I won't put every single Bond movie in the list, no interest, I won't repeat this again and again.
I'll just put the other ones really linked with Switzerland.
So, I just add: - DirectorPeter R. HuntStarsGeorge LazenbyDiana RiggTelly SavalasBritish agent James Bond goes undercover to pursue the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is planning to hold the world to ransom. Not because of what I wrote before, but because this 6th 007 movie is happening mostly in Switzerland, and was shot there, in the right places it is happening.
In between those 2, there was already: - DirectorGuy HamiltonStarsSean ConneryGert FröbeHonor BlackmanWhile investigating a gold magnate's smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve. In this film they shot a bit in Switzerland, scenes are happening there, and I'm not sure, but it might have been said in this film about Bond swiss' origin...
To conclude with 007, there's also: - DirectorMartin CampbellStarsPierce BrosnanSean BeanIzabella ScorupcoYears after a friend and fellow 00 agent is killed on a joint mission, a secret space based weapons program known as "GoldenEye" is stolen. James Bond is assigned to stop a Russian crime syndicate from using the weapon. My favorite James Bond.
If I don't make any mistake, James is at a moment in Switzerland (Geneva...?) with a story implicating a swiss banker, and also, the great, beautiful, magnificent, crazy opening scene of the movie, where Bond is rappelling from an huge dam, has been shot in Switzerland.
In some other movies of the series, they might talk about Switzerland, or a city of Switzerland, or pretend to be there, but they didn't shoot another movie in my country. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader. The planet Alderaan, the planet where princess Leia (excuse the few) grew up, the 1st planet destroyed by a massive destruction weapon in the saga (The 1st Death Star), is in fact Switzerland.
It's where the shot the plans happening there.
And logically...: - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorThree years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy. The scenes between Leia's parents, queen Padmé Amidala and Anakin "Darth Vader in the making" Skywalker at the queen's holiday's palace, near a beautiful lake... all this had been shot in Switzerland as well.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodGeorge KennedyVonetta McGeeClassical art professor and collector Dr. Jonathan Hemlock, who doubles as a professional assassin, is coerced out of retirement to avenge the murder of an old friend. You have one of the most swiss mountains in the title of the movie.
The Eiger, whose north face is known to be the most difficult to climb in the world.
This Clint Eastwood film is happening mostly there, and was shot in the real place. - DirectorRon HowardStarsTom HanksEwan McGregorAyelet ZurerHarvard symbologist Robert Langdon works with a nuclear physicist to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican during one of the significant events within the church. The beginning of the movie is happening in the CERN, the scientific research center the most famous in the world (there r tens of kilometers under a bit part of the Geneva countryside composing it. It's where scientists try to recreate the origin of the Universe, the Big Bang, in the biggest particles accelerator of the planet, experiences that afraid the entire world years ago, cause many scientists all around the world thought it could create a dark hole, that could "eat" the whole Earth by growing), and they really shot there (it is possible to visit it as well; of course not every parts, for security and keep the secret of the experiences, but some parts).
- DirectorStephen GaghanStarsGeorge ClooneyMatt DamonAmanda PeetA politically charged epic about the state of the oil industry in the hands of those personally involved in and affected by it.They shot in Geneva (my city; not the capital contrary to what many people think, and it's neither Zurich - the biggest city of the country -, but Berne is the capital, although it's only the 4th or 5th city of the country, and that in most of the states, the capital if the most populated city), Switzerland, as Matt Damon's character is working there.
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsChris EvansHugo WeavingSamuel L. JacksonSteve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization. The Dr. Arnim Zola, the scientist right-hand man of Red Skull, the super-villain of the movie, the doctor who created the massive destruction weapon is a swiss scientist.
In Captain America 2, in the scene in the deserted bunker of the army base where Captain has been trained during WWII, the scene where Cap and Black Widow go investigate there, the mind of the passed Arnim Zola tells them he's swiss, correcting Steve Rogers who said he was austrian, or german, not sure. - DirectorJames WhaleStarsColin CliveMae ClarkeBoris KarloffDr Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with assembling a living being from parts of several exhumed corpses. The book Frankenstein has been written by Mary Shelly, an english author... but she wrote it during a long stay in Switzerland, near Geneva, where she was with her husband Percy, and their friend Lord Byron.
Byron proposed them to write each their own scary, freaking story.
Mary wrote one of the most famous horror novel ever...
Also, she gave the swiss nationality to her main character, so, yes, the Dr. Victor Frankenstein is swiss, like James Bond; well, more than him, cause James is half scottish half swiss, Frankenstein is 100% swiss. - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsDane DeHaanJason IsaacsMia GothAn ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps, but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem. The movie is entirely happening in Switzerland, although it was shot in the neighboring Germany, in a sanatorium where a brave good nice guy named Adolf Hitler has been cured.
- DirectorDavid CarsonStarsPatrick StewartWilliam ShatnerMalcolm McDowellWith the help of long presumed dead Captain Kirk, Captain Picard must stop a deranged scientist willing to murder on a planetary scale in order to enter a space matrix. The main character of the movie (and of 3 other Star Trek movies, as well as 2 TV series) has been inspired by a swiss scientist.
Indeed, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) was created from Jean Piccard, a swiss chemist, engineer and aeronaut.
He was a pioneer in stratospheric flight and cosmic ray research.
Pioneer in stratospheric flight (they did the very 1st flight in stratosphere of humanity) alongside his twin brother Auguste, who inspired a famous character of: - DirectorJean-Jacques VierneStarsJean-Pierre TalbotGeorges WilsonGeorges LoriotTintin and Captain Haddock try to discover what is so desirable about their old and apparently worthless ship. The professor Tryphon Tournesol (1 of the main characters of the adventures of Tintin, adapted in 2011 by Spielberg himself - but without this character in it -, with a sequel coming made by Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson himself) was inspired to Hergé (the author of the comic book where Tintin is born) by Auguste Piccard, the twin brother of Jean Piccard, named above cause he inspired the Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek.
Auguste was a swiss physicist, aeronaut and oceanographer, pioneer in stratospheric flight with his twin bother Jean, and pioneer in the exploration of the ocean depths (he created the very 1st submarine of history).
His son, Jacques was asked by the United States Navy to explore the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on Earth; which he did.
His grand-son, Bertrand, is a pioneer too.
He co-developed and piloted a few years ago the 1st solar plane ever, and went around the Earth flying in it.
What a family!
Also, one of the adventures of Tintin is happening mainly in Switzerland (It's "L'affaire Tournesol"). - DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsDwayne JohnsonRyan ReynoldsGal GadotAn Interpol agent successfully tracks down the world's most wanted art thief with help from a rival thief. But nothing is as it seems as a series of double-crosses ensues. The character played by Ryan Reynolds has a swiss father.
So, the hero of the movie is half swiss citizen. - DirectorJérôme SalleStarsTomer SisleyKristin Scott ThomasPredrag 'Miki' ManojlovicAfter a powerful billionaire is murdered, his secret adoptive son must race to prove his legitimacy, find his father's killers, and stop them from taking over his financial empire.Simon Ovronnaz, the best friend of the main character Largo Winch, is a swiss citizen; like it was in the belgian (not swiss) comic books whose adaptation's here.
- DirectorKen AnnakinStarsJohn MillsDorothy McGuireJames MacArthurA Swiss family must survive being shipwrecked on a deserted island.Well, as indicated even in the title, the main characters are... swiss.
Yeah, you won!
;P
In the movie, they name a lot of swiss cities, mountains, traditions, areas; mainly of the capital city, Bern, where from they are. - DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonDan FoglerGellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.The main villain of the "Fantastic Beasts" saga (the 3rd movie just went out, there will be 5 movies in total) is named Grindelwald... which is the name of a well known mountain village of Switzerland.
It can't be a coincidence! - DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin. The FATHER of the aliens is a swiss great painter, named H.R. (Hans Rüdi) Giger, who received the Oscar from the Academy Award for the special effects of the 1st movie.
Someone of the production saw a book of his paintings where there were already creatures looking a loooot like the final look of the aliens, so, he recommended Giger to Ridley Scott, who immediately also felt in love with his work.
So, they hired this swiss artist, and he worked on his creatures, transformed them a bit to obtain the final result.
Then, he created the facehugger, the chestburster, the eggs, the alien ship and its pilot, the big white dead guy we see in the seat... that then became the main creature of "Prometheus", many years later.
P.S.: There have been several documentaries about Giger, but the one that went out just after he passed away (in 2014), "Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World" is a MUST see! - DirectorJohn G. BlystoneHal RoachStarsStan LaurelOliver HardyGrete NatzlerLaurel and Hardy, rat trap salesmen who are unable to do business in Switzerland, having no money to pay for lunch end up working for the hotel where a composer, who has run away from his wife, has taken refuge. The movie is entirely happening in the swiss mountains, and contain many details remembering it (food, habits, traditions, or the Saint-Bernard, the mostly used dog for moutain rescue, a swiss race; there even are 2 mountain passes in Switzerland named Big Saint-Bernard pass and Small St-B. pass...)
- DirectorZepStarsDonald ReignouxMélanie BernierEmilie Blon-MetzingerTiteuf is a famous character from comics and animation series. Yakari has a magical encounter with the Great Eagle, his totem animal, who gives him a beautiful feather and the gift of being able to speak with animals.Same than above.
- DirectorAllan DwanStarsShirley TempleJean HersholtArthur TreacherA plucky little orphan girl gets dumped abruptly into her gruff, hermit grandfather's care, then later gets retaken and delivered as a companion for an injured girl. There have been many Heidi movies.
So, I'll just put the very 1st one, cause it's an american (and not swiss, otherwise, as explained in the description of the list, it wouldn't be here, where I put only movies RELATED with Switzerland, and not PRODUCED by; I have another list of swiss movies THAT I SAW only, where I put the 2015 version of Heidi, the great movie it is, because it's a swiss production; there's a link for that list in the intro of this one) movie, that is the adaptation of a swiss book.
And it's all happening in the swiss mountains. - DirectorOlivier AssayasStarsJuliette BinocheKristen StewartChloë Grace MoretzA film star comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself while starring in a revival of the play that launched her career. This movie with 2 American actresses (Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz), - 1 of them being one of my favourite actresses (the 2nd I named) - is set and has been shot in Switzerland, in the village that gave its title to the movie.
The original title even is just this name, Sils Maria.
Didn't see it anyways, wasn't interested.
