Movies/TV I want to see in 2024
A bit ahead of schedule this year, I'm going to make this list and update it when new information comes along.
Note: Some of these movies will almost certainly get pushed back due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but I will keep them on here unless it’s officially confirmed that they won’t be coming out in 2024.

- DirectorJeymes SamuelStarsLaKeith StanfieldOmar SyAnna DiopStruggling to find a better life, Clarence is captivated by the power of the rising Messiah and soon risks everything to carve a path to a divine existence. The concept for this sounds promising! I adore Biblical epics from the Golden Age of Hollywood like The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, and apparently this will be inspired by them. I hope it's genuinely a sendup or satire of their style, like what La La Land did for the old Hollywood musical, rather than trying to turn it into a shitty action movie like Noah or the Ben-Hur remake.
- DirectorSean CharmatzStarsJacob TremblayPaul Walter HauserColin HanksA boy with an active imagination faces his fears on an unforgettable journey through the night with his new friend: a giant, smiling creature named Dark.To be honest, the only reason I put this movie on here is because it's written by Charlie Kaufman, my favorite screenwriter still working. It's a children's movie, so it probably won't go fully into the postmodern madness Kaufman is best known for. But the trailer looks cute, and a film about an anxious, neurotic child, written by a master of writing anxious and neurotic adults, sounds just right.
- DirectorDan PartlandStarsPhil VischerMarjorie Taylor GreeneReza AslanLooks at the implications of Christian Nationalism and how it distorts not only the constitutional republic, but Christianity itself.I'm a documentary junkie, and this documentary will explore the movement known as Christian Nationalism. Which I find interesting, to say the least.
BONUS ENTRY: Speaking of Christian Nationalism, apparently God's Not Dead 5 is coming out next year. It's not listed on IMDb yet, so I'm tacking it on in a random place. I'm not sure if I should put it here or in the other list. These movies are awful, but I have a strange fascination with them. - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsTimothée ChalametZendayaRebecca FergusonPaul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.Damn. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but Dune 2 was delayed due to the strikes. The first part was one of my favorite movies in recent years, so I'll be eagerly waiting for March.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsKirsten DunstWagner MouraCailee SpaenyA journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. As America grows more polarized by the year, we now have our first film dramatizing what a Second American Civil War might look like. I like Alex Garland's stuff, and while we don't have many details yet, I am keeping tabs on it.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsRyan ReynoldsHugh JackmanEmma CorrinWolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth Deadpool. They team up to defeat a common enemy. One of the neat things about making these lists is that I can go back and see what a starry-eyed Marvel fanboy I was back in 2019. Then I can watch as I get less enthusiastic and more disillusioned with each passing year, until I'm the cynical, Marvel-hating grouch that I am today.
Well, I don't hate Marvel, but I feel their quality has sharply declined since the pandemic, so now my default state is to not see Marvel movies unless I'm interested or am told it's good by reliable sources. Thanks to the strikes, this is the only one we're getting next year. I'm interested enough in Deadpool to go see this, and will cross my fingers that Disney doesn't meddle too much in our fun. - DirectorKelsey MannStarsAmy PoehlerPhyllis SmithLewis BlackFollow Riley, in her teenage years, encountering new emotions.Usually I'm lukewarm about Pixar's sequels. But if any of their movies deserves a sequel that can expand and elaborate on the original idea, it's Inside Out. The original was funny, touching, and wonderful, and I will be happy to see these characters again, and some new ones.
Also, the fact that it explores Riley as a teenager means there's a ton of comedic, and dramatic, potential. It's kind of a shame it'll be limited by a PG rating. But Turning Red did get away with some things that, for some silly reason, are considered risqué. If it ends up provoking outrage from our culture's self-appointed moral guardians, I'll be happy. - CreatorTony GilroyStarsDiego LunaKyle SollerStellan SkarsgårdPrequel series to Star Wars' 'Rogue One'. In an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.Andor was the big surprise to come out of the tsunami of new Star Wars content. It follows a character I didn't care about from a movie I thought was okay. But out of all these new shows, this was the one that actually felt like a show for grown-ups. It's complex, it's political, it's morally grey, it actually examines the lives of regular people living under the Empire, not just the Jedi or the extended Skywalker family. It's not without its flaws, but if they really want to turn Star Wars into a big extended universe, they should make more stuff like this. Not...whatever the hell The Mandalorian turned into.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsZazie BeetzJoaquin PhoenixLady GagaSequel to the film "Joker" from 2019.Joker was the most interesting and subversive thing done with the comic book genre in recent years. I don't mind the choice of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. But apparently it's also going to be a musical? A Star is Born 2 is looking pretty wild.
- DirectorJon M. ChuStarsCynthia ErivoAriana GrandeJonathan BaileyAfter two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.Hoo boy. As someone who catalogues movies when they're early in production, this is my personal white whale. This movie was pushed from a 2016 release, to 2019, to 2021, and now 2024. And apparently this is a part one(?!?!). At this point I just feel bad for the people working on it and hope it does well for their sake.
- DirectorNick HermanDennis LenartStarsErin YvetteAdam HarringtonThe Wolf among us 2 is the continution of The Wolf among us series which is a adventure/action game based on the book fabels written by Bill Willingham, but the story takes place 20 years before the incidents of the book. The only video game on my list. I loved Telltale Games and was very saddened when they went under, but apparently they have risen again. And are making the sequel to The Wolf Among Us, which came out in 2013, was amazing, and ended on a total cliffhanger. And now we're FINALLY getting more. Yay!
I just hope Among Us memes have died out by then. I mean, they're kind of dead now, but maybe by then they will have passed into that stage of meta-irony where a vintage meme becomes acceptable to use again. Forget I said all that, I need to go outside more. - CreatorRyan J. CondalGeorge R.R. MartinStarsMatt SmithEmma D'ArcyOlivia CookeAn internal succession war within House Targaryen at the height of its power, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.House of the Dragon season 1 was pretty good. Apparently season 2 is going to have less episodes...because that's never been a harmful decision for this franchise before. I have my gripes, but I'm just invested enough in these characters to want to know what happens.
- CreatorPatrick McKayJohn D. PayneStarsMorfydd ClarkIsmael Cruz CordovaCharlie VickersEpic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.My opinion on the two big fantasy shows of 2022 is that HotD was just slightly overly loved and RoP was just slightly overly hated. Yes, there's a bit of bad writing and strange character choices and it certainly doesn't rival Tolkien's work, but it's an entertaining enough show that looks amazing, and I want to see them explore more of Middle-Earth.
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryAfter leaving off from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the story continues.Boy, was I wrong to worry about Across the Spiderverse last year. I just thought having so many Spidermen would bog it down somehow. But it was about as good as the first one, and in terms of animation it was better. The main flaw is that it ended on a cliffhanger, which I'm eager to see resolved.
Update: Well, I guess we can't have nice things. Due to the strikes and other issues, it's getting delayed, possibly until 2025 (or god forbid, later). But I'll keep it on here unless it's confirmed that that's happening. - StarsTravis FimmelCamilla BeeputSarah LamTV series set in the 'Dune' universe which centers on the lives of the Bene Gesserit.I don't relish the idea of Dune becoming a franchise spanning dozens of movies and TV series in the vein of what Star Wars has become, or what Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings are becoming. However, I'm enough of a Dune fan to check out this show.
- DirectorKenji KamiyamaStarsBrian CoxLorraine AshbourneMiranda OttoThe untold story behind Helm's Deep, hundreds of years before the fateful war, telling the life and bloodsoaked times of its founder, Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan. As a huge Tolkien nerd, I am interested in this animated prequel. My only quibble is that of all the visually striking and imaginative stories you could have brought to life from, say, the Silmarillion, why this one? Yeah, I was dying to know the backstory of the castle of Helm's Deep. Tolkien's mythology is much richer than a series of medieval battles.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAdam DriverGiancarlo EspositoNathalie EmmanuelAn architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. In the 70s, Francis Ford Coppola created four undisputed masterpieces of film: The Godfather Part I and II, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation. Since then, his oeuvre has been very...mixed. But there is reason to hope that this will be a real comeback for the old master. This sci-fi epic has been his passion project since the 80s, and he directed some of his crappier movies solely to get out of debt and be able to fund this. There are plenty of cautionary tales of passion projects going up in smoke. But Coppola's films have changed my life, so I wouldn't dare miss this.
- DirectorAdam ElliotStarsEric BanaJacki WeaverSarah SnookIt centers on Grace Puddle, a lonely hoarder of ornamental snails who lives in Canberra.Adam Elliot is the creator of "Mary and Max", a raw, cynical, hilarious, gut-punching film that happens to be in claymation. This is his second feature film, 15 years later. I really hope it gets a wide release in America, because however it turns out, I guarantee you it will be better than Venom 3.
