- DirectorJamie BabbitStarsNatasha LyonneClea DuVallMichelle WilliamsA naive teenager is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.I love a good campy film and this one delivers. It's cute, funny, and aesthetically pleasing. I will never grow tired of it!
- DirectorGlenn FicarraJohn RequaStarsJim CarreyEwan McGregorLeslie MannA cop turns con man once he comes out of the closet. Once imprisoned, he meets the second love of his life, whom he'll stop at nothing to be with. The first time I saw this film, I regretted not seeing it sooner. I had always thought it was a bad parody film for some reason, but then I watched it and realized that it was a real story with real heart. It's also very funny, with jokes that don't get tired over time.
- DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonJamie BellRichard MaddenA musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years. This movie is incredible in every regard. The costumes, the music, the acting. It's a movie I always think of even when I'm not watching it.
- DirectorAlan BallStarsPaul BettanySophia LillisPeter MacdissiIn 1973, when Frank Bledsoe and his 18-year-old niece Beth take a road trip from Manhattan to Creekville, South Carolina, for the family patriarch's funeral, they're unexpectedly joined by Frank's lover, Walid.Wow, this movie will not leave me. It has really rich dialogue, and amazingly complex characters. I thought I was done with 'coming out' storylines but this film proved that it can still be done really satisfyingly.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsJared GilmanKara HaywardBruce WillisTwo 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. While people set out on a search mission, a violent storm approaching them catches their attention. This is a film that reminds me of my younger self. The aesthetics are on point, and it's perfect for a rainy day when you're feeling a little nostalgic.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsJennifer TillyGina GershonJoe PantolianoTough ex-con Corky and her lover Violet concoct a scheme to steal millions of stashed mob money and pin the blame on Violet's crooked boyfriend Caesar.Bound is another film I wish I could've seen sooner, but it's never too late to watch it. It's so nice to see a 90s flick with a butch lead that has such a deep plotline, and I love that both woman got to play large and crucial roles. It's the type of film you don't want to pause.
- DirectorJared HessStarsZach GalifianakisOwen WilsonKristen WiigA guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history. Based on the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery.I'm a ham for true crime films that are about mostly harmless crimes and a lead that you want to root for. I hadn't expected this film to be so cute and genuinely funny, but I'm glad I gave it a chance as it's now one of my favourites.
- DirectorAnne FletcherStarsDanielle MacdonaldJennifer AnistonOdeya RushWillowdean ("Dumplin'"), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, signs up for her mom's Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.Such an underrated film! I actually prefer the film over the novel, although I wish the casting for Hannah had been more true to the text.
- DirectorFrank OzStarsKevin KlineJoan CusackTom SelleckA midwestern teacher questions his sexuality after a former student makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards. This film is full of cliches and camp but in a very harmless way that I can't bare to criticize it for. It's a very fun 'coming out' storyline that is very sweet and funny. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
- DirectorMike NicholsStarsRobin WilliamsNathan LaneGene HackmanA gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents. This one is another classic that you can just throw on and enjoy at any time. It's campy, funny, and has a great cast.
- DirectorBeeban KidronStarsWesley SnipesPatrick SwayzeJohn LeguizamoThree drag queens travel cross-country until their car breaks down, leaving them stranded in a small town.Like most of my favourites, it's camp, it's silly, it's cute. But it still stands out on its own. I could watch it over and over (and I do), and still feel as giddy as the first time.
- DirectorShôgo FuruyaSatoshi KonStarsTôru EmoriYoshiaki UmegakiAya OkamotoOn Christmas Eve, three homeless people living on the streets of Tokyo discover a newborn baby among the trash and set out to find its parents.Wow! Just wow! This movie is perfect to watch in the few days between Christmas and the new year, as that's when it takes place (which is something I enjoy about it, it's not a timeline that many stories tackle, and especially not this well.) Each character is really unique, and the shenanigans are not predictable.
- DirectorMichael CristoferStarsAngelina JolieFaye DunawayElizabeth MitchellThe story of the life of Gia Carangi, a top fashion model from the late 1970s, from her meteoric rise to the forefront of the modeling industry, to her untimely death. The true and tragic story of Gia, a public figure I'm always interested in learning more of. I appreciate that this film also shows her fun, free-spirited side.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsCharlize TheronChristina RicciBruce DernBased on the life of Aileen Wuornos, a Daytona Beach prostitute who became a serial killer.Another true story, and another I'm intrigued by. The costuming in this movie is so incredible that you could swear you're watching the real Aileen Wuornos in action.
- DirectorMichael John WarrenStarsBrian d'Arcy JamesSutton FosterChristopher SieberMake room for ogre-sized family fun as the greatest fairy tale never told comes to life in a whole new way in this breathtaking Broadway musical adaptation of the hit movie Shrek!I can shamelessly recite each line and each song from this movie. Theatre peaked at this moment in history.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSusan SarandonGeena DavisHarvey KeitelTwo best friends set out on an adventure, but it soon turns around to a terrifying escape from being hunted by the police, as these two women escape for the crimes they committed. An incredible movie! The natural development of the characters is amazing, and the acting is MWAH. It's just one of those films everybody needs to see.
- DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsGong YooJung Yu-miMa Dong-seokWhile a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.Train to Busan is the kindest zombie film I've ever watched, and also the most stressful without a doubt. Each character is somebody to fall in love with while watching, and the kindness of people amidst the worst possible circumstances makes it stand out from the usual zombie flick.
- DirectorRobert Vincent O'NeilStarsCliff GormanSusan TyrrellDick ShawnMolly, a high schooler, secretly earns her living as Angel, a street prostitute whose only family and friends are the ones she works with on the streets. She has to survive against a serial killer who is targeting people of her profession.I had initially watched this movie as a joke, but left a changed person. It was insanely good. It has a great cast of characters with fun dynamics, the jokes are funny, and the story took great direction without ever dragging on as 80s horrors sometimes do.
- DirectorEli RothStarsJack BlackCate BlanchettOwen VaccaroA young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt aids his magical uncle in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world. This movie is surprisingly underrated. The entire aesthetic, and the performances, are all incredible enough to carry the entire thing, but luckily the story is really good too. I'm always surprised that more people haven't heard of it.
- DirectorFrancine McDougallStarsMarla SokoloffMarley SheltonMelissa GeorgeA popular high-school cheerleader becomes pregnant by the star quarterback and turns to crime to support her desired lifestyle.Another campy and outrageous favourite, but it's just such a funny little movie. I love to see them having so much fun committing crime #girlboss
- DirectorEiichirô HasumiStarsRyôsuke YamadaMasaki SudaMaika YamamotoThe Earth's moon is suddenly 70% smaller and permanently crescent shaped by a devastating and unknown force. For the students of E Class, Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the being responsible is known, as their teacher. The strange and very supportive entity has given the Japanese government a challenge to save the Earth from destruction. It wants to be the teacher of the class with the lowest expectations for success, in anything. The students, armed with special weapons that only harm their teacher, must find a way to kill him before the end of the school year. If not, summer break will be canceled by the end of the world.I'm always surprised when a live action adaptation is good but this one really hits the mark. The casting was great. The sequel was well done as well but the first one sticks with me a little better.
- DirectorRyan MurphyStarsMeryl StreepJames CordenNicole KidmanA troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high-school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.A bit cliche, and totally predictable. Still, stories like this need to be told and it's done in such a fun way that it's still enjoyable to watch. The adult cast is so incredible that they overpower the lead but that's to be expected in a movie with so many big names.
- DirectorJoe MantelloStarsJim ParsonsZachary QuintoMatt BomerAt a birthday party in 1968 New York, a surprise guest and a drunken game leave seven gay friends reckoning with unspoken feelings and buried truths. This film is an unexpected favourite of mine. It's full of drama and characters that you can't believe are friends if this is how they interact-- yet it somehow gives it that realistic edge that makes it enticing to watch. There are many interesting characters, great dialogue, and the performances are all incredible.
- DirectorNorman TaurogStarsSpencer TracyMickey RooneyHenry HullWhen a death row prisoner tells him he wouldn't have led a life of crime if only he had had one friend as a child, Father Edward Flanagan decides to start a home for young boys. This movie, and it's sequel, were favourites of mine in high school. Albeit, I haven't watched them since so I don't know how well they've aged, but I remember them fondly regardless. The dynamics of the characters, as well as the character development of the main boy, was very well done. The pacing was also really good especially for such an old film.
- DirectorLorene ScafariaStarsConstance WuJennifer LopezJulia StilesInspired by the viral New York Magazine article, Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients.Yes, more girls committing crime, and yes, I'm rooting for them because they're having fun. But honestly, this film was really well done, and it doesn't completely glamorize the lifestyle that these girls partake in either. It's careful to show the nitty-gritty side as well, and the consequences they face.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsBen StillerCarla GuginoRicky GervaisA newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc.Literally every film in this series is great so by adding this one I'm considering the entire trilogy a part of this list. The plot is unique and fun at any age, and I love a good found family, especially one as strange and unexpected as the cast of characters in this series.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsThomasin McKenzieAnya Taylor-JoyMatt SmithAspiring fashion designer Eloise is mysteriously able to return to 1960s London, where she encounters dazzling wannabe singer Sandie. But the glamour is not as it seems, and the dreams of the past crack and splinter into something darker.A lot of people say this movie is predictable, and maybe it is. I had the ending spoiled for me before I'd even seen it but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of it. I found the execution to be really well done, which is really the main point.
- DirectorTetsuya NakashimaStarsKyôko FukadaAnna TsuchiyaHiroyuki MiyasakoMomoko, a strange and seemingly emotionless girl obsessed with 18th century France, befriends a Yanki biker and the two experience the ups and downs of their unusual lives in a rural Japanese town. This movie is soo early 2000s, but it's not dated in its humour and execution. The dynamic between the two leads is the best part, naturally, and despite the clashing aesthetics, it all comes together so satisifyingly.
- DirectorTaisuke KawamuraStarsNonMasaki SudaHiroki HasegawaA cross-dressing rich heir meets a jellyfish geek in an incident that comes to turn the lives of her and her several roommates inside out.Another unexpectedly good live action adaptation! I didn't expect such cartoonish characters to translate well into a live action but they made it work. The aesthetics and fashion of this movie are so lovely.
