From non-fiction to screen
Non-fiction material have also made it to the big screen too. From biographies, books telling real-life events from history, memoirs, published reports, and sometimes from podcasts. And those I have watched it before which came from all that.

- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsDaniel Day-LewisSally FieldDavid StrathairnAs the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.I do not tend to read books that has to do with politics, unless it had to do with my studies.
Then again, maybe because the studying of the American political system was subconsciously becoming of what I had to study about when I did American history at university (though it was in the comparative politics module where it went in depth) at one of the mass communication modules I had to do, I did read Doris Kearns Goodwin's 'Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln', where this film was partially based on.
In a way it helped me to make sense of what was to unfold, even if the ending is a well-known one. - DirectorAlan J. PakulaStarsDustin HoffmanRobert RedfordJack Warden"The Washington Post" reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Richard Nixon's resignation.Much like Breakfast at Tiffany's, I did not read the book of the same title before watching this.
Then again, students of mass communications (or the media in general) like myself in my university days would have been aware of what this film is all about. The film that came to celebrate the best of what journalism can be, and naturally it was one of the films raised by our lecturer. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.A film that has come to serve as a cautionary tale to those choosing to look the other way on the horrors of WWII and its treatment of Jews, but it originally started out as a non-fiction book as 'Schindler's Ark' by Australian writer Thomas Keneally.
Not that I had read the book (no, I did not), but it has always been a film I wanted to watch since being a History student back in secondary school and being exposed through the textbook of the horrors of WWII and how Jews were treated meant that there are every reason for me to do so. You tell someone who can never forget being part of a discussion group in class originally studying about Nazi Germany before the part on WWII, and the discussion topic was on listing from the textbook what German Jews had to face and being stunned and amazed at the treatment they got, it became my first real awakening that people can get discriminated for simply how they look or what they believe in.
And I wonder why I always consider this film as amongst my all-time favourites. - DirectorJames MarshStarsEddie RedmayneFelicity JonesTom PriorStephen Hawking gets unprecedented success in the field of physics despite being diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the age of 21. He defeats awful odds as his first wife Jane aids him loyally.Technically this comes in here, given the film is based on the book written by Stephen Hawking's former wife Jane's account of their time together, which in the film culminated in the fame he received after writing 'A Brief History of Time'.
Still, anyone who is aware of the now-late Hawking's life can still appreciate how he managed to beat the odds and becoming the physicist who would become one of the most celebrated of our time. It is still inspirational nonetheless. - DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsTaraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle MonáeThe story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program. The reason why this came here is due to how it came from the book of the same title of how it was loosely based on that, of the women who played their part in the early years of the American space race, with the focus on Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson.
Until the release of this film, it is definitely a story not known about to many. The story of the space race is definitely well-known, but the stories of the people behind it, it is especially unknown of how female African-American mathematicians at NASA had also played a part until this came about.
It is definitely an educational tool, and always a reminder to girls and females everywhere no matter their background and skin colour that it can be done. - DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.
