- DirectorEric BlackFrauke SandigStarsRichard BoothbyMary CosimanoJustine FritzWhat is consciousness? Is it in all living beings? What happens when we die? Why do we seem to be hardwired for mystical experience? In these times of existential crisis, there has been an explosion of research into consciousness. After four centuries of silence, scientists are confronting the "Big Questions", cutting a window into a realm previously held tight by philosophy and religion: AWARE follows six brilliant researchers, approaching the greatest of all mysteries from radically different perspectives, from within and without: through high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances and by investigating the consciousness of plants. Scientists are arriving at new insights - some have been integral to Indigenous knowledge for millenia. AWARE opens as a science film but emerges well beyond the explicable, ultimately leading one on a voyage upon the ocean of consciousness, a contemplative, sensual, cinematographic meditation. The networks of consciousness are reflected in 'grand' imagery revealing the vast interconnectedness of Nature - from the smallest organisms, to the world of plants and animals and on to the cosmos. It invites one to experience the awe and mystery of life as the researchers do, to dive in with them, returning to see the world anew, to review long-held beliefs and assumptions and initiate one's own oceanic journey. Ultimately, to be aware one is aware. With Richard Boothby, Monica Gagliano, Roland Griffiths, Josefa Kirvin Kulix, Christof Koch, Matthieu Ricard and Mingyur Rinpoche.

The von Siering family home is a character in its own right, a hulking, neoclassical manor that hovers on stilts above the sea. Oda arrives there bearing her mother's coffin and a gift requested by her surgeon father: a jarred, two-headed fetus to add to his laboratory of gruesome curiosities. Ebbo von Siering (Edgar Selge) sees himself in his daughter when she calmly and expertly learns to suture the corpse of a cat. What he fails to recognize - and what Oda luckily understands - is that their interest in science is their only similarity. His dedication to experimentation is linked to an appalling obsession with power and destruction, while Oda is genuinely curious about life. Her quick, quiet intelligence complements her humanity and her lucid understanding of right and wrong. When she strays from a family picnic and discovers a badly wounded Estonian anarchist, she helps him without a second thought, smuggling him into her father's lab and putting her new surgical skills to good use. As their illicit friendship deepens, family turmoil escalates and war closes in. The safe haven of the community collapses, forcing Oda's family to make impossible choices.

- DirectorAndrea RoggonStarsHelge SchneiderAndrea SchumacherErwin KlempkeHelge Schneider is one of the most extraordinary German artists. Jazz musician, entertainer, film director, actor and clown. His exceptional talent is his improvisational skill. This is where he shows his bubbling creativity. 'I make the everyday grey colorful,' is what he says about himself. In his world, the fantastic coexists with the everyday and it is difficult to define the boundaries between reality and fiction. Even in his communication with his audiences, this element of disguise is used, humorously conveying his attitude toward the world. But how does Helge Schneider react to a filmmaker who approaches him to make a portrait about him? It is very clear that he is not going to offer his secrets on a silver platter. He doesn't like for people to know too much about him... so the viewer has to accompany him on this journey - and determine for himself just where fiction begins, and where it ends.

- DirectorSusanna BoehmStarsAlteouise DeVaughn AustinJolie Rocke BrownTerry Lee CookIn the (white) world of opera, George Gershwins alternately celebrated and controversial opera Porgy and Bess is one of the very few works that takes people of color as its subject. Susanna Boehm's stirring documentary follows the cast of the New York Harlem Theatre on their European tour of The Gershwins work. As the troupe travels from city to city, attracting stares from startled Austrians, the parallels between the opera and the real life experiences of individual singers are revealed in a series of deeply personal conversations. Growing up poor, with drugs and violence a common experience, the ambition to become an opera singer seemed an impossible dream for many cast members. A sentiment voiced by many is that black singers have to be twice as good as white singers. Terry Lee Cook has been performing Porgy for ten years. But in the black community, the common perception is that Porgy and Bess is a graveyard for singers of color. Despite the attendant complexities, the music overwhelms. Embedded throughout the film are show-stoppers such as It Ain't Necessarily So, and Summer Time. As timeless as anything penned by Verdi or Puccini, Porgy and Bess is a quintessentially American masterpiece that captures "the passionate battle of African-American artists for recognition, self realization and equality" in glorious song. (Vancouver International Film Festival 2009)

- DirectorEric BlackFrauke SandigStarsJosefa 'Chepita' Hernández PérezFloridalma Pérez GonzalezCarlos Chan ChanukHeart of Sky, Heart of Earth Clouds pass before the sun and away again while a gentle voice speaking in the splendid tones of the Mayan language explains how the Earth came to be. There were no humans or animals; there was only sky... This poetic atmosphere sets the tone for a weighty story demonstrating how globalization is wiping out this benign approach to life in a narrow-minded, crude, and criminal way. According to the ancient Maya, this great cycle of their calendar will end in 2012. But for the source of our demise, there is no need to look to the esoteric. The remote homelands of some nine million present day Maya in Chiapas and Guatemala present a perfect microcosm for witnessing how greed is already ravaging the Earth and indigenous cultures. With sublime imagery, six young Maya present their daily and ceremonial life, revealing their determination to resist the destruction of their environment, their rainforests and their native corn. One salient example is the huge open pit in Guatemala, where the largest gold mine in Central America has recently been dug. The earth has been stripped and laid bare for the grabbing hands of a Canadian Multinational. The Maya suspect the red lumps on their children's skin are caused by cyanide from the mine. They are now in such dire straits that, while some keep silent out of fear for their lives, others are mobilizing. Their cosmovision, in which all life is sacred and interconnected, presents a deeply compelling alternative to the prevailing worldview.
