- DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseJennifer ConnellyMiles TellerAfter thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.While not objectively the best, this film proves that simplicity is sometimes better than complexity. This film not only honours the original but also fixes its mistakes and exceeds it in terms of characters, acting and action. In an age of excessive CGI, it is glorious to see real stunts and action. Topped off with an excellent score, this is one of the best action movies of recent memory.
- DirectorJoel CrawfordJanuel MercadoStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekHarvey GuillénWhen Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has burned through eight of his nine lives, he launches an epic journey to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish.A fantastic animated feature for kids and adults. Everything aspect of this film is great from the voice-acting to the animation to the writing. It is both hilarious and poignant, one of the best animated films in recent memory.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsMichelle YeohStephanie HsuJamie Lee CurtisA middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led. This is how you do a multiverse movie. Great action, great characters, excellent worldbuilding and strong thematic resonance. This film masterfully balances these aspects to make a near perfect masterpiece and arguably the best movie of the year.
- DirectorTodd FieldStarsCate BlanchettNoémie MerlantNina HossSet in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.A powerhouse of a performance from Cate Blanchett combined with an excellent script makes a film that, while long, is full of detail and ambiguity that leaves lots of room for discussion.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroMark GustafsonStarsEwan McGregorDavid BradleyGregory MannA father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child.Beautifully animated and wonderfully acted. You can feel the passion in every aspect of this film. It is mature, emotional but is balanced out with humour and gorgeous imagery.
- DirectorEdward BergerStarsFelix KammererAlbrecht SchuchAaron HilmerA young German soldier's terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I.A harrowing and somber showcase of the futility of war and the effects of war on a human, physically and mentally. Beautifully shot and well-acted, it is a must-see war movie with a strong anti-war message.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsRobert PattinsonZoë KravitzJeffrey WrightWhen a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement. This film excels in atmosphere. Gotham city feels real thanks to gorgeous cinematography and fantastic music. Pattinson shines as a younger Batman and the detective plot is perfect. While it could be trimmed down, I am excited to see what Reeves has in store for us.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonKerry CondonTwo lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.Beautifully shot, well-written and with standout performances from its two leads. A film that despite having humour, is incredibly bleak and by the end you will either have a lot to talk about or you will feel you have wasted your time.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverJake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their home.A visual masterpiece with gorgeous effects, excellent cinematography and musical score. The characters and plot are stronger than the original, though not amazing with some poor dialogue and cheap manipulation, but the superb action makes up for it.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsAmber MidthunderDakota BeaversDane DiLiegroNaru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth. While far from spectacular, this film recaptures a good amount of what made the original great, combining gritty action with a unique setting.
- DirectorJeff FowlerStarsJames MarsdenJim CarreyBen SchwartzWhen the manic Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Tails is all that stands in their way.Sonic 2 is a lot of fun. The characters are all likeable, especially Idris Elba as Knuckles, the comedy is good and there is a clear love for the source material. The plot is a bit messy and the film could have easily been cut down but its worth it to see Jim Carrey having a blast.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsLetitia WrightLupita Nyong'oDanai GuriraThe people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T'Challa. The MCU’s strongest film this year is mediocre at best. The strong performances and solid action do not make up for the bloated runtime and less than stellar plot.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsLuke KleinSean GunnMichael RookerStar-Lord, Drax, Rocket, Mantis, and Groot engage in some spirited shenanigans in an all-new original special created for Disney+.Harmless fun. James Gunn proves he can still write characters and provide a fun time. The jokes are hit or miss, the characters still well-written. It is a harmless precursor before the curtains close on the Guardians.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigEdward NortonKate HudsonTech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case.A compelling mystery must have a satisfying resolution. Yet this film squanders it at the final hurdle making it hard to rewatch and easier to see where the holes in the plot are.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others.A movie that doesn't live up to its own title. This film is at its best when it is Sam Raimi horror, but there is little of that. The rest is Marvel sludge with some good acting but a nonsensical plot and characters.
- DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsDwayne JohnsonAldis HodgePierce BrosnanNearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods--and imprisoned just as quickly--Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. While it does provide some mindless fun, Black Adam lacks substance. Everything about this movie is forgettable aside from Pierce Brosnan. Some fight scenes are cool but there is no down-time for character development. Another mediocre mess on the DC pile.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanChristian BaleThor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct. This movie basically killed my love for the MCU. Full of half-baked ideas that are undercut by bad jokes. A massive step-down from Ragnarok, a visual mess with terrible CGI and a waste of Christian Bale.
- DirectorDaniel EspinosaStarsJared LetoMatt SmithAdria ArjonaBiochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. The best part of this movie is not even in the movie. Memes aside, Matt Smith is the only shining light in this poorly made film. Clearly rushed with poor editing, laughable CGI and bored acting.
