2023 Anime Ranked
Spring has been the best season for me though Autumn came close. 1-16 anime are anime I can see myself rewatching at some point. Though will depend on how the stories go in the future of course!

- CreatorTsukasa AbeKanehito YamadaStarsAtsumi TanezakiKana IchinoseMallorie RodakAn elf and her friends defeat a demon king in a great war. But the war is over, and the elf must search for a new way of life.10/10, Autumn-Winter. Got a smile on my face. I simply find everything about this anime to be close to perfect, its characters, plot and overall atmosphere simply hold me. First episode sets up the theme of the show and hasn't let me down. Grabbed the anime of the year spot.
- CreatorYuji KakuStarsChiaki KobayashiYumiri HanamoriMarisa DuranA squad of prisoners and their guards are sent to investigate a mysterious island. They get stranded there and must rely on each other to survive the island's mysterious and monstrous residents.9/10, Spring. This is a fascinating story that is unfolding, if this anime sticks the landing when the onion is unraveled it will be quite something
- StarsYûto UemuraMike HaimotoShin'ya TakahashiFollowing a tragedy, Thorfinn embarks on a journey with the man responsible for it to take his life in a duel as a true and honorable warrior to pay homage.9/10, Season 2, Winter-Spring. First 8 eps or so this is an incredibly boring farm simulator and would be lucky to get a 6/10 from me but at some point the story gets in motion and becomes fantastic, makes me forget this. I'd say first third a 6 and after that close to a 10. Will keep this season a 9 overall.
- StarsGen SatôSayaka SenbongiHibiku YamamuraA boy grows up behind the safe walls of an apocalyptic Japan full of monsters. Tokyo flourishes as a paradise, while outside the walls of hell dangers lurk. However, a small group searches for heaven.8/10, Spring. All I can say is this anime better not fall on its face. Bordering 8/9 score.
- StarsJessie James GrelleBryce PapenbrookTrina NishimuraAfter his hometown is destroyed and get traumatized, young Eren Jaeger vows to cleanse the earth of the giant humanoid Titans that have brought humanity to the brink of extinction.8/10, Final final season ha. 10/10 for ep 1, 8/10 for ep 2. Despised end in manga but felt more understanding in anime adaptation. Still a stumble toward the finish though, I feel Eren and Ymirs motives to be muddled along with the whole past/present/future blended together thing. Overall fantastic watch, one of the best anime I have seen, an amazing 10yr journey.
- CreatorNatsu HyûgaStarsAoi YûkiTakeo OtsukaKatsuyuki KonishiA young maiden is kidnapped and sold into servitude at the emperor's palace, where she secretly employs her pharmacist skills with the help of the head eunuch to unravel medical mysteries in the inner court.8/10, Autumn-Winter. I was going to skip this one but decided to give it a try a couple weeks back and ended up marathoning it. Now I have to watch weekly for the remaining few eps... oh well. Maomao is a terrific character and I really want to see her succeed in life. Jinshi clearly is more than he appears and perhaps its just the shipper in me but I want to see them together though the class difference is going to make that doubtful. I guess its a cross between House and CSI? Good stuff.
- StarsTakuya EguchiAtsumi TanezakiAlex OrganA spy on an undercover mission gets married and adopts a child as part of his cover. His wife and daughter have secrets of their own, and all three must strive to keep together.8/10, Season 2, Autumn. Gotta say I really appreciate Yor getting a chance to shine after so many Loid focused episodes. Anya continues to be cute and show overall simply brings a smile to my face.
- CreatorOsamu TezukaNaoki UrasawaStarsShinshû FujiYôko HikasaRachel SlotkyWhen the world's seven most advanced robots and their human allies are murdered one by one, inspector Gesicht soon discovers that he's also in danger.8/10, Autumn. I think the show as an overall story was great but some of the smaller details made this not reach the greatness that it could have been, that mysterious teddy bear being only one thing for me. Even with the issues I had a great time with some great characters with interesting ideas.
- CreatorAka AkasakaStarsTakeo OtsukaYurie IgomaMegumi HanA doctor and his recently-deceased patient are reborn as twins to a famous Japanese musical idol and navigate the highs and lows of the Japanese entertainment industry as they grow up together through their lives.8/10, Spring. The first episode was fantastic yes, the rest of the show was a step down though if still a solid show with both fun and emotional moments. Though I don't care about Ruby's idol group (as a whole) like I do the actors with Aqua. I can't give this the wild praise many others do.
- StarsJunya EnokiYuma UchidaYûichi NakamuraA boy swallows a cursed talisman - the finger of a demon - and becomes cursed himself. He enters a shaman's school to be able to locate the demon's other body parts and thus exorcise himself.8/10, Summer-Autumn. Season 2. I suppose this is a low 8 for the strong animation, good fight scenes and better than average story/characters for a shounen. What happened to a certain character is wanting to drag this down, still irritated long after it.
- StarsGen SatôKonomi TamuraSeiichiro YamashitaTwo insomniac students meet and start to spend their nights in an observatory together.8/10, Spring. Romance is sweet and the photography/astronomy stuff passable. Here for the feels though, wanting positive ones so this show better not pull a Your Lie in April on me.
- DirectorHaruo SotozakiStarsZach AguilarLaila BerzinsKira BucklandTanjiro needs to bring a definitive end to Upper Rank Six. After the dust settles, he goes with his sister Nezuko to the Swordsmith Village in search of a new sword.8/10, Spring. New season. The animation is fantastic as always and fights remain interesting even if lacking a single badass moment that previous seasons provided. "Comedy" is tamed however which I greatly appreciate.
- StarsRie TakahashiKaito IshikawaRina HidakaTomo is a tomboy who has been in love with her childhood friend Junichiro, and strives to make him see her as a romantic candidate.8.0/10, Winter. I do find the manga handles the jokes better but was still an enjoyable series with fun characters.
- StarsMarisa DuranCeleste PerezMauricio Ortiz-SeguraAs graduation nears for Kyouko Hori, Izumi Miyamura and friends, they reminisce about their high school memories, cherishing the fleeting yet vibrant moments spent together.7/10, Summer. Good to accompany the main series, does not quite have quality as the parent show of course but lots of fun here.
- StarsInori MinaseKôki UchiyamaAbby TrottAfter her boyfriend breaks up with her for another girl, Akane Kinoshita decides she is going to make him regret his decision. Unexpectedly, however, she meets a socially awkward gamer who might just solve all of her problems.7/10, Spring. Ep 8 best of season. The pair is working for now but worried this might get dragged out.
- CreatorMisaki TakamatsuStarsMegumi HanMaaya UchidaTomoyo KurosawaMitsumi moves to Tokyo to attend a prestigious school and achieve her dreams of making positive change in the world. But while she's got book smarts, she soon finds herself inexperienced in big city norms, and struggles to make friends.7/10, Spring. Warm cutesy anime and works for whatever reason unlike an anime like Kubo-san from this season that just feels like fluff.
- CreatorYasuhiro NightowStarsYoshitsugu MatsuokaJohnny Yong BoschSakura AndoFollow gunman Vash the Stampede as he struggles to maintain his pacifist ways while avoiding the immense bounty on his head.7/10, Winter. I don't like this as much as the original Trigun, different story but some elements of a prequel? Not sure. Animation different but I got used to it after awhile and it works I think. Final episode terrific though rest of the show is just "good" imo. A mid-7 show, like it about as much as Undead Unluck, good not great.
- CreatorYoshifumi TozukaStarsYumi UchiyamaKahara MoeMariya IseAn unlucky girl meets an undead guy. The two work together well with their super abilities, but discover a conspiracy involving superhumans.7/10, Autumn-Winter. Andy sure is a presence on screen. Is carrying the show and its strange premise with his interesting technique in fighting and personality. Show isn't anything spectacular overall but the missions are interesting enough for a solid show.
- StarsChikahiro KobayashiHaruka ShiraishiFumihiko TachikiIn the early 20th century in Hokkaido, Japan, a treasure hunt between various parties takes place for a hidden stash of gold.7/10, Technically a show from last year but put on hold after the death of a staff member, it finished in Spring so I'll be considering it to be of that season. Season 4.
I want to like this 4th season more but I simply don't care about these side characters like I do about Sugimoto and Asirpa. Lots of time was spent with them however. When two mains featured the show was great, the many side characters? Not so much. - CreatorHaro AsoStarsShuichiro UmedaZeno RobinsonBill MillsapA worker in a foreign finance company is bullied and worked around the clock, before a zombie outbreak finally makes him feel alive.7/10, Summer. This is a show that can't be taken at all seriously and it goes too far with the silliness at some points. Sometimes wants to have an emotional moment and I feel nothing because of the comedy. Has usual zombie tropes as well. Positive side has a quartet that is fun to watch and the art is interesting and colorful to watch. I am glad the animation studio was able to release the last few episodes before 2023 ended.
- 202312 epsTV-147.2 (1.3K)TV SeriesStarsSayaka SenbongiManaka IwamiAi KakumaWhen noblewoman Euphyllia is unjustly stripped of her title as the kingdom's next monarch, the buffoonish Princess Anisphia takes it upon herself to right this wrong. Despite being taken for a fool 'cause of her silly antics, Anisphia is a magic genius, and she has a plan to help Euphyllia regain her good name. But little do they know-their encounter will alter the kingdom and the entire world.7/10, Winter. The main duo is fun to watch and I enjoy their interaction. However. Show has identity crisis, action, slice of life, political intrigue, not enough time given to any to make this great. Abrupt end as well, hopefully a second season will be made to flesh things out more. 7/10 with season 2 in mind. If stops here will need to lower to a 6.
- CreatorDaisuke AizawaStarsSeiichiro YamashitaHaruka ShiraishiInori MinaseWhen Cid is isekai'd to another world, he creates an underground organization to live out a fight against a made-up cult. Little does he know the cult is real, and they're not happy his power fantasy just impeded their plans.7/10, Season 2. Autumn. Like the first season its alright. Has hype behind it which I don't agree with. The monologues of Shadow make me roll my eyes and useless fanservice is just distracting. Rose has potential if used correctly in future.
- StarsSumire UesakaDaiki YamashitaKimberley Anne CampbellHigh schooler Hayase Nagatoro loves to spend her free time doing one thing, and that is to bully her Senpai. After Nagatoro and her friends stumble upon the aspiring artist's drawings, they find enjoyment in mercilessly bullying the timid Senpai.7/10, Winter, Season 2. I thought S2 was a step up from S1, the relationship progressing helped I'm sure. Still a throwaway show but had fun with it like other teasing shows.
- StarsTaku YashiroTomoyo KurosawaMakoto KoichiIn a world inhabited by vampires, golems, werewolves and other creatures, Aya Rindo, along with Tsugaru Shunichi and Shizuku Hasei, travels as supernatural detective, solving mysteries while she looks for her lost body.7/10, Summer. Was alright in the mysteries, can't say I care one bit about any of the characters, if I feel anything it is usually annoyance. I suppose the main trio did the job if nothing special.
- StarsRie TakahashiAki ToyosakiHitomi NabatameIn this prequel spin-off series, Megumin from the Crimson Demon Clan devotes all of her energy into perfecting Explosion Magic - and nothing else.7.0/10, Spring. Flat 7, there are times when this Megumin centered prequel is fun but often it is boring and not funny at all as well. I think that the whole Konosuba group needs to be together, picking out one just ruins the dynamic.
- StarsZeno RobinsonAlejandro SaabSuzie YeungUsing superpowers to enter their clientele's photos one by one, Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang take their work seriously at "Time Photo Studio," a small photography shop set in the backdrop of a modern metropolis.6/10, Summer, Season 2. Was going along with it as a solid show but last couple episodes took the twists and shocking moments too far for me.
- StarsKana HanazawaKengo KawanishiMamiko NotoHigh school student Junta Shiraishi has a simple goal: To live a fulfilling youth. However, achieving this goal appears to be harder than expected, as everyone in his surroundings often fails to notice him due to his lack of presence. In fact, Shiraishi's lack of presence is so severe that people think his seat in class is always empty, and mistakenly assume that he often skips school. There is even a weird rumor spreading around in class, claiming that those who successfully spot Shiraishi will be blessed with good fortune for the day. So far, the only person who notices his existence is Nagisa Kubo, the girl seated next to him. Unfortunately for him though, Kubo likes to tease him on a daily basis and often puts him into unprecedented and nerve-wracking situations. However, as Kubo's playful antics continue to involve the reluctant Shiraishi, he may soon discover that his youth might not be as boring as he initially thought.6/10, Spring. Too much like other teasing shows without being original. Lots of cute shots of Kubo to save if one wishes but the story itself is so thin and fluffy I find it hard to care. Male MC generic of generic nonentities, reminds me of Komi-san male MC.
- StarsShun HorieHina YomiyaMegumi HanFascinated by the macabre, Kyotaro fantasizes about acting on his twisted thoughts to the detriment of his classmates. His heart was dark until an encounter with Anna lit a spark within it in a classic tale of boy meets girl.6/10, Spring. Overrated. First few episodes terrible. Cringe emo boy, ditzy girl, trio of pervy disgusting boys. Gets better by being more mediocre before the last few eps pick up with good content. Never cared at all for main boy but did like girl more as season concluded. Did like his sister though, helped move things along at the end, really helped bumped this show to being watchable. Too late to save it for me though.
- StarsKishô TaniyamaTomori KusunokiErin YvetteWhen evil forces threaten to resurrect Anthrasax, the God of Destruction, the Kingdom of Meta-llicana calls on a volatile dark wizard for help.6/10, Summer, Season2. The first season was cheesy bad but had enough that I kinda enjoyed it. Dark Shneider doing his thing and the girls, the fights, was fun to be had. This new season was less so, most of the characters from S1 were sidelined for new people I did not care about at all, hurt the enjoyment. Shame. Will still watch any new content though, perhaps should remind myself of sunk cost fallacy...
- StarsMorgan BerryBrandon AcostaBree HanA necromancer in a distant era incarnates himself into a young boy in modern Tokyo. But he gets caught in a mystery about the boy and his own past.6/10, Spring. Feels generic with fanservice and jokey characters, characters also feel like they are drawn and act for "style" instead of focusing on substance. Feels like Durarara but worse. Meh.
- CreatorMilchaStarsAmi KoshimizuLindsay SeidelIan SinclairLiving in a fairy tale may seem like a dream, but for this young heroine it is more like a nightmare.6/10, Spring. Generic romance/villainess show, I also read the source material for some reason and I know it gets really dumb for me. This first season is the best it has to offer, not sure why started. Won't be seeing any sequels if are made certainly.
- CreatorTite KuboStarsMasakazu MoritaJohnny Yong BoschTakayuki SugôThe peace is suddenly broken when warning sirens blare through the Soul Society. Residents are disappearing without a trace and nobody knows who's behind it. Meanwhile, a darkness is approaching Ichigo and his friends in Karakura Town.5/10, Summer, Part 2. I am not impressed with this at all and the insane high rating baffles me. Nameless Quincies fighting Soul Reapers with flat personalities. Killing some off too unless tricking us, in the name of being "darker" I guess. Not that I care that much. Was interesting in the first season of Blood Wars with change in tone and fantastic animation but now I'm bored.
- StarsTakeo OtsukaYume MiyamotoMutsuki IwanakaA doctor who treats robot and humanoid problems takes place in the near future when humanoids with AI account for 10% of the population. Hikaru Sudô, also known as Moggadeet, secretly takes on illegal medical procedures.5/10, Summer. Lots of side stories many of which I don't care about. Ep 8 finally a bit interesting. Ep 9 the opposite, perhaps most boring episode. Final ep halfway decent, if second season maybe will focus up and be an alright watch.
- StarsChiaki KobayashiReina UedaChôInto a world of magicians is born Mash, a young boy who lacks magic but is the strongest person around. His existence and destiny will change his world.5/10, Spring. Watched 3 episodes and dropped. Not funny at all and characters were irritating. Looked liked the "comedy" was going to be more important than the "story". Bleh.
- 202312 eps6.5 (259)TV SeriesStarsSayaka ÔharaYûichi NakamuraKana HanazawaOn the outside, otome villainess Liselotte seems foul in every way, a purely evil character. However, as revealed in her diary, she was always hiding both her pain and her true feelings for Prince Siegward. While she keeps this locked away, an evil witch ultimately possesses her, leading to her demise and a tragic end for the tsundere villainess. This is how the story always goes, an end coded into the game MagiKoi. Broadcasting club members Aoto Endou and Shihono Kobayashi decide to play this game. In another universe, Prince Siegward hears their voices, believing it to be a divine revelation from a god and goddess. These voices clue him into something he never noticed before: Liselotte is actually overwhelmingly adorable. There are no resets in this game, and just one chance to change the future for the ill-fated villainess. In years to come, these two entities, who would guide the country to prosperity and greatness, would be known as play-by-play Endou and color commentator Kobayashi.Winter. Meh. Corny romance with no feeling of actual stakes. The final 2 episodes took a silly premise into being an outright absurd one. 5/10, feeling generous.
- StarsReina UedaKaito IshikawaHouko KuwashimaAn unhappy young woman from an abusive family is married off to a fearsome and chilly army commander. But the two learn more about each other, love may have a chance.4/10, Summer. Miyo is too pathetic for me to get behind, don't care how sparkly everything is. Reminds me too much of Sakura from Fate, not a good thing... After finishing she is more pathetic than Sakura. Shows a little something in final episode but I don't buy it given her previous character actions.
- CreatorRifujin Na MagonoteStarsYumi UchiyamaTomokazu SugitaAmber Lee ConnorsA 34-year-old underachiever gets run over by a bus, but his story isn't over. Reincarnated as an infant, he'll embark on an epic adventure.4/10, Summer, Season 2. More sexual assault from Rudi, buying a slave no qualms about it, slutty companion, rotten characters with no morals including Sylpy, no story progression really but plenty of time with Rudis ED... just terrible overall. Somehow boring too with wasting time. That Sara character for instance, Eris ripoff just to make Rudi sad and sympathetic. Pfft. Not happening. Sylphy spending entire season hesitating because of course she does, got to drag things out. Concludes with the princess and bodyguard helping Rudi and Sylphy get laid. Brings a tear to your eye it does. This season took all goodwill I had from Pt2 of S1 and burned it.
- CreatorMakiko NagaokaStarsNatsuki HanaeSaori ÔnishiAoi KogaRyûto Kashima is a gloomy high school student. As part of a punishment game, he is forced to confess to Runa Shirakawa, a girl from the top of the school caste who's admired by everyone.4/10, Autumn. First episode was bait gimmick and after that was just boring relationship drama for main couple and boring relationship drama with supporting characters as well. MLC a whiny nothing.
- CreatorYoruhashiStarsChristina ShermanAzumi WakiKaito IshikawaIn a world of science vs. magic, Adonis has sworn revenge on the human race for taking away his beloved mentor. What lies at the end of his destructive path?3/10, Autumn. I don't think I have ever watched such an edgy show. The edge was simply overpowering. Every character a 1D nothing who are all unlikable, those that live long enough to even get to be worth taking a notice to. Main character is a sociopath and pink hair girl hanging on him a pathetic doormat. Everyone are terrible people both morally and in regards to being interesting at all. A garbage show that was my clear worst of the year.
